- Refuting foundational claims to Catholic authority. Why you DON'T need to believe what the Vatican says.
If we reject the authority claims of the Roman Catholic Church than we no longer have any reason to embrace their unbiblical teachings on things like purgatory, the papacy, the priesthood, indulgences, the insufficiency of grace, the Apocrypha and the bodily assumption of Mary.
Before I make a comment I want to let everyone who reads this know I am a Christian of no denomination. I was raised catholic but I never felt close to God. Things happened later on in my life that made me run to Him and buy the Bible. When I read it I was astonished to see many things about the catholic church teachings that are unbiblical or came after Jesus and the Apostles. I know the catholic church and many catholics do good things in the name of Jesus and I will always have respect for them. However, after I read scripture myself and allowed it to speak for itself I clearly saw the truth. God's word has authority! The way to salvation is through Jesus Christ and not to attach yourself to a denomination. I have a lot of love for my protestant brothers and sisters too but again it doesn't do them many favours that there are literally thousands of different sects within the reformation. There are some sects that do focus only on the word of God though. The catholic church gives bold claims that they cannot hold to because their actions say differently. God would not allow the bible to only be half-authorative when it was written over a 1,500 year period only for Rome to take over it??? Let scripture speak for itself. If you don't belong to the church Jesus established, then you cannot possibly understand all of Scripture correctly, because the church's role is to teach the TRUTH. Reading the Bible on your own and not going to the TRUE church is not what God intended.

Jesus did not leave us a Bible, he left us Church that then gave us the Bible as we know it today. So it is the authority of the Church that we even have the Bible. What happened to the first Christians who didn't have the authority of the Bible? Also, please google "who compiled the Bible" you will see that it was the Catholic Bishops that compiled, copied and preserved the Bible that you have today. Also, when you look up the history of the Bible you see that the Catholic Church is the only one that contains all the books that were originally deemed inspired in the first century. Martin Luther and the reformers came along 1,500 years later and took out 7 books. This is a fact of history. So if the Bible is the only authority, who gave Martin Luther authority to take out 7 books that the first early Christians deemed inspired?
By Faith Through Grace.....In the Holy Bible we read "If I (St. Paul) am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth. Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is great..." [1 Tim. 15-16]. Did you see the part where it says that the Church is the Pillar and bulwark of Truth... not the Bible. It was the Catholic Church that compiled the writings and epistles and deemed them inspired at the council of Nicea in the year 362AD. Jesus did not leave us a Bible, he left us His Church that then gave us the Bible as we know it today. So it is through the authority of the Church and the working of the Holy Spirit that we even have the Bible. What happened to the first Christians who didn't have the authority of the Bible? 400 years had passed and it wasn't until Pope Damasus appointed St Jerome to translate the Bible into Latin, (to make it more accesible to all languages .. since Latin is the root language to almost all languages) that we got the Latin Vulgate. Also, please google "who compiled the Bible" you will see that it was the Catholic Bishops that compiled, copied and preserved the Bible that you have today. I think if Peter himself descended from Heaven and told the pope that Roman Catholicism is wrong, the pope would say Peter is wrong quoting Paul’s “if they preach another gospel let them be accursed”

I grew up Catholic , went to church every Sunday and classes on Wednesday for years and I understood nothing. After all the years of being involved with the church I didn't have a clue about how to have a relationship with Jesus. I know all the stories in the bible but not how to be saved. Being saved by" your works" is exactly how I was raised, so I didn't understand why Jesus was crucified. The crucifixion and resurrection didn't mean very much to me when I still had to save myself. So much ceremony and ritual goes on with just a simple Sunday mass but no real communication and teaching. Also the saints and the virgin Mary were prayed to almost equally as Jesus, like I said I didn't understand anything. I felt so much judgment through the church it was a place that filled me with guilt, there was no joy. In the last few years I have left the church, read the bible and started listening to pastors who actually speak to educated. I think I finally understand why people say the " good news"! Once I got out of the Catholic church everything seems so simple I can finally love Jesus for what he did for me! all of my life I was trying to save myself by doing everything perfectly but I am a flawed human so i never could .

It's nice that you finally listened to the Christian message. It's a shame that you had to leave so much behind and embrace such novel doctrines as being saved and the avoidance of works. Jesus gave Christians two commandments, Love God and neighbor. Fail to do those WORKS and you will go to Hell. On the way down you can scream "BUT I AM SAVED" all you want.

Me: Nice try. The thief made a public confession that he deserved his punishment. He publicly tried to evangelize the other thief. He pronounced Jesus innocent. He asked Jesus for salvation.

8:56 "Many Catholics do not know Catholicism and this may be their saving grace." As a former Catholic (born, raised and educated in the Church) I agree, this is abosolutely true. As Mike points out, Catholicism is extremely complicated and I would go even farther and say almost no Catholics actually really know Catholisim as the Vatican would express it. I would consider most of the Lay Catholics I know saved because of their faith in the fundmental doctrines Mike mentions at the beginning. Most of the Catholics in my family fully believe they are saved by Grace alone and don't know that the official doctrine of the vatican is different. They are (as I was) largely ignorant of problems in the Vatican's many other "official" teachings.
"Official Teaching" Comes from Jesus. Worship comes from Mass and Holy Communion. Ignorant problems come from human beings.

God is merciful to Christian Catholics that sincerely believed Catholicism....not those presented the truth and refused to listen.
Society used to be taught to "go to the source". Rome perpetuated their standing as the only true wisdom in the Word, and it's interpretation. Unfortunately we drank the cool-aid. As a young boy (who was an Altar Boy) who wanted to read Revelation, the Parish Priest told me not to because I would "go insane" trying to understand it.
When I was a teenager, my mother became born-again. Over the next couple of years, myself, and my three siblings became Christians. My father, who was raised Catholic was not interested. Eventually, he started to read the bible for himself. One night, at the dinner table, my gentle natured father slammed his hand on the table during dinner in an uncharacteristic angry act. When mum asked what was wrong, dad said, "They (the Catholic church) have lied to .e my whole life, Daph! Those "xxxxxxxx" have knowingly lied to me. I will never set foot in a Catholic churcj again!". Dad kept his word, and he learned THE WORD. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
That was low key me, also. I became lutheran.

Andrew McAllan, I will be happy to know what lies your father is referring to which the Catholic Church is guilty of. It is more likely that your father has misunderstood what the Catholic Church truly teaches.
@@veritasmuy2407 Thanks to private interpretation, we have more than 50000 protestant denominations and free for all churches. You should know why the Catholic Church insists on its prerogative to interpret scripture. First of all, Jesus gave the Catholic Church the authority to interpret scripture infallibly. Secondly, in order to maintain the integrity of scripture and to maintain unity among Christians, there is need for a teaching authority for this purpose.
I lived for 5 years in a Roman Catholici convent as a child. I was well versed in Catholicism. I left the R.C. church and was baptized in an evangelical church and the truth really did set me free. I am now 72 years old and my eyes tear up still when I realize the sacrifice Christ paid for me. I look forward to the day when “the government will be upon His shoulders”. Thanks to mike winger for truly clear biblical teaching. Thanks to the holt spirit for the insights laid upon my heart some 50 years ago

BARBARA K----Have you ever read the writings of those that were taught by the apostles ? Ignatius, who was consecrated bishop of Antioque by St.Peter, called it the Catholic church !
St. Augustine, in the fourth century, called it the Catholic church ! All historians, The Encyclopedia Brittanica, Wikipedia and All books of Lists, after serious research into early church history, the bible, ancient texts and regular history ALL state that Peter WAS the first Pope ! The Catholic church was founded on Peter and is our Saviour's church.

I just got out of an interfaith group and I got told that I needed to repent of a bound conscience because I essentially said that between the apostles of the first century and the third century, it's relatively silent about the early church and then we get church fathers who taught things. We have a century and a half in which things can get twisted and changed. Heck even Peter was caught modifying the Gospel and got chastised. So I said we needed to be careful and use the Scriptures as our only Infallible source for doctrine.
Part of the problem with discussions about "the early church" is that, Biblically speaking such a body never existed. There never was a monolithic body called "the church". There were churches because the word church in Greek refers to "an assembly, a (religious) congregation" according to Strong's definition. Strong's states that in usage, the term is used for the whole body of Christian believers, but that is a misuse of the term because it contradicts the definition. The NT is replete with references which make no sense if the church is the whole body of believers. This is a crucial issue which I have not seen discussed much in videos.
Grew up as a catholic, family left when I was about 16. I was saved by Jesus at 23, now 55. The Lord helped me to see that Catholicism was not right with Him, is the best way I can put it. These videos though have been helpful in understanding more in depth why.
Religion is like politics. You can give facts, stats, exact quotes, etc and people will still disregard it. Nothing is more true than, “You can only reason a man out of something that he was reasoned into.”
When the Holy Spirit truly leads someone into a faith (as the Holy Spirit did with me and the Catholic Church)...no, you aren't about to change it. You can't. What the Spirit does is everlasting truth. Jesus said "Heaven and Earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away".
@@thomasb282 With all due respect, Thomas, I understand it perfectly...just as Jesus did as the founder of the Catholic Church. As far as what is "Biblical" and un-Biblical, please keep in mind that the Church itself, through the work of St. Jerome and St. Augustine, gave us the Bible as we know it.....St. Jerome translated the first Latin Vulgate. The Church (and the authority that Jesus Himself gave it, though Peter and his successors) preceded the Bible by several centuries....and the Church was given that authority, in the Holy Spirit and the Magisterium, to interpret the Scriptures....something that Fundamentalists often fail to understand, because they don't understand history. And, THAT (the Church) itself is the tradition of God, not of men. The reason we have some 25,000 Christian so-called (denominations) today is that thousands upon thousands of self-proclaimed leaders (including fundamentalists) thought they knew more than Jesus, 2000 years of Catholic tradition and Magisterium, and left to start their own churches...just like the person who did this false and misleading video. Christ's own Roman Catholic Church, however, continues to flourish, and will do so, just as He promised Peter it would, until the end of time, and no evil will overcome it.

I was born and raised in a Catholic family. My mom is a devout Catholic, serving the church, doing rosary with those images made of wood or stones. She's also doing procession of the images of Mary, bowing down and touching the image with handkerchief. I grew with all these things that my mom is doing which doesn't really bothers me because I am not a religious person. I would say my faith with the God that we believed in is somewhat 10%. I didn't even know the concept of "God" came from, didn't even know the Bible. But after 43 years of my life, God made me realised that He's doing miracles in my life. He always provided an exit to my adulterous situation. (cried too much 😭😭😭) So I started going to the church which is the Catholic church. With a few weeks going to church every Sunday, I've felt something wrong seeing people kneeling down in front of the image of Mary (a grotto outside of the church). Then I started reading and studying the Bible, of course with the guide of the Holy Spirit. God is gracious with wisdom when you asked of it and everything it make sense to me. God is truly faithful with His promises, He gave me a new heart and a new spirit (Ezekiel 36:26) I am born again in spirit ( John 3:3, 1 Peter 1:23, 2 Corinthians 5:17, John 3:6) He made me realised that from Heaven, He came down on earth to save us, and that is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (John 14:6, Luke 2:11, 1 Timothy 1:15, Titus 2:13) From 10% to a million percent faith.😊😊

False accusation. The point is the the Holy Spirit does NOT lead people away from his church.
Another section of Scriptutre that comes to mind is Galatians 2:11-20, where Paul describes how he opposed Peter because Peter was not in line with the Gospel. Paul didn't just submit to Peter as though he were the infallible "chief of the apostles". Paul opposed him when Peter was in the wrong. I think that highlights a principle here that is relevant to the convo about Papal authority/infallibility and the Catholic claim to the succession of Peter. We have precedent in Scripture to be able to judge and discern the teaching and actions of others, no matter how much of a "reputation" they may have for themselves; and for that we have Scripture as our means for judging.
My #1 easy objection...
Paul said he was the apostle to the gentiles and Peter to the Jewish Christian. Peter stated in 2Peter that all of Paul writings and teachings should be considered scripture.
@@alanshoebridge9987 And each of the four gospels were written for different audiences (Matthew for jews, luke for romans, etc) doesnt mean we should all have different bibles for what group we belong to.
Think of it more as a specialty, Peter specializes in Messianic Jews (Jewish Christians) and Paul specializes in Gentiles, does not mean they're different types of Christian, they are both followers of Christ and children of God.
You have always been able to tell a Pope that he was wrong. The idea of Papal infallibility only came about at the end of the 19th century and only pertains to the rarest of papal pronouncements.
@@trismegistus2881 the issue I think is captured well in the Catholic Catechism, Second Edition, section 891 (I'm not sure the proper way to site the Catholic Catechism). It reads,
"The infallibility promised to the Church is also present in the body of bishops when, together with Peter's successor, they exercise the supreme Magisterium, above all in an Ecumenical Council. When the Church through its supreme Magisterium proposes a doctrine "for belief as being divinely revealed," and as the teaching of Christ, the definitions "must be adhered to with the obedience of faith." This infallibility extends as far as the deposit of divine Revelation itself (p. 235-236).
Your video bad theology is one of the best I've ever seen refuting the man made false doctrine of the catholic church. I took pages of notes. I was born and raised into a catholic family and reading the Bible and other revelations led me to realize a lot of things. I can't go back now.
Psalms 62:11 Go has spoken once, twice have I heard this that power belongs to God. It did not say power belongs to man. The pope changes their doctrine every some years but God's word never change.

I actually started RCIA after completing The Bible in a Year with Fr Mike Schmitz. I will be confirmed in Easter. I have taught Bible Study for several years. Neither church is perfect, but both serve a perfect God. Either way it is a personal heart matter, but I have personally found that the Catholic Mass feels more like Worship to me. The last several years the many Protestant Churches are like a Rock Concert. The pulpit a stage for entertainment complete with an extraordinary light show.

I am an XCatholic and after asking the Holy Spirit to reveal truth to me and reading the Bible my spiritual eyes were opened! Praise God! I was set free from the burden and bondage of Catholicism. Having to obey mans rules( the church authorities) over Gods word is not saving grace! Ask the Holy Spirit in Jesus name to show you the truth in the Holy Bible and you will be set free from mans false doctrines. ✨🙏🏻

Jesus works through his church to save you. And Jesus established his church on Peter around 30 ad. Pentecost is considered the official beginning of the church with the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and disciples. Jesus, knowing that he would ascend to Heaven made provision so that the good news could be spread to all corners of the earth in his physical absence. I have looked and looked and never seen a false teaching in Catholicism. There are some I don't like just as there are a few commandments I would like to edit, but the problem is within me and not in either the church or God's Word.
Bridgefin All I need is Gods truth is the Holy Written Word, ( The BIBLE) and the precious Holy Spirit to teach and guide me into His truth. Forgiveness is in Jesus alone not in any institution. As I said, my prayers are for those lost in man made rules and regulations that only weigh them down into the burden of the Lord and not the freedom and joy of the Lord Jesus. I've furthermore heard this guy make many errors about the Catholic church in another video. I don't think he is ready to debate a professional Catholic apologist. Additionally, he just made another error in saying that the Catholic church uses a unique vocabulary. The word "magisterium" is not unique to the Catholic church. This is a HUGE charge he gave Peter. Not only did he just change his name from Simon to Peter (which means Rock). Peter proclaimed Christ as Lord and believed in him. It is on Peter's faith that He builds his Church and gives Peter the authority to bind and loose. I tell you this because it was this authority (through the working of the Holy Sprit) that the Catholic Bishops and Pope ratified the Bible. It was several hundred years after the apostles died that the CHURCH compiled the writings in to a NT.

The authority issue ends up being a bootstrap paradox.
The defense for their absolute and exhaustive authority is about 3 verses out of context, if you point out that the verses are out of context they reply with "you're not allowed to interpret scripture, only they can do that". The actual history of the church is a history of disagreement and debate but unified in spirit. Many doctors and fathers of the church have different takes, but agree on the essentials. It's easy to read scripture and see where the arguments come from and read their writings to see if a concern they have was universal or an overreaction to a heresy that went away.
It's easy to see where the RC positions come from or how they've changed. It's a matter of history accessible to literate people. The problem is that every since the first and second great schisms they've just doubled down on authority instead of TEACHING the word, instead of encouraging the spreading of the word, of literacy, of the enrichment of the people of God.
Yes, tradition is important, but there's so much tradition and some is clearly contradictory, some is CLEARLY not as well reasoned or in harmony with the rest if revelation, yet you're not allowed to point this out. All they do is double down on authority, while choosing to sample only from the traditions that support their political authority while ignoring the traditions and scriptures that don't.
But this is what all cults do. They all make an appeal to authority to squash any debate over biblical truth.

But what is he consistently trying to be heard on?.just doctrines? No, he builds logical, scriptural and rhetorical cases that are quote long and detailed to make his case at every turn.
And when speaking about supernatural facts, he largely defers to larger traditions he doesn't invent (like OT or contemporary ideas) or the testimony of the eye witnesses when speaking of Christ saying that he gives to us wgat he also received (from others), meaning his testimony isn't hist an appeal to authority as a cult leader but his doctrine is rooted in the experiences and testimony of others and they all stand in concert as one proclaiming a truth upheld by scripture, prophecy, multiple attestation of miracles, and his own bonafides, testimony and miracles align with those, and his skills and schooling make him especially qualified to understand and explain it.
Paul's authority wasn't a bootstrap appeal to authority. He made his case for his authority in things outside himself. His appeal to it only makes sense in light of the fact he's already made this case as a logical evidence based case for his authority, and even then he doesn't use it to make claims without argumentation, scripture, evidence and logic.

Matt. to Rev. - Peter is mentioned 155 times and the rest of apostles combined are only mentioned 130 times. Peter is also always listed first except in 1 Cor. 3:22 and Gal. 2:9 (which are obvious exceptions to the rule). Early Church Fathers all recognized Peter as the first pope. And any pope is open to personal criticism by another. We all can grow closer to God and that includes popes.

MORE SUPPORT PROOF: YES! In the New Testament, no “bishop” had jurisdiction over the bishops or presbyters of other churches ever! Not one of the 12 apostles, let alone all 12, passed on their authority to any successors. The apostles Christ chose was for laying down of the firsthand foundation of Christ and for them to show Christ was the fulfillment of what the Prophets, who were also eyewitness, had spoken and written of what they saw, and heard firsthand.
That foundation was already laid. It was competed before the apostles died, and they were bringing in members/disciples into the BODY OF CHRIST/ the spiritual building.
They did as Christ told them and that’s why the New Testament clearly establishes the major doctrines of the Church right in Scripture, like the vital doctrines of the atonement, resurrection and justification by faith alone.

The idea that Peter was the first pope, or chief leader is LOOSELY based on Matthew 16:18, and that is a grandiose deception that he was chief church leader. The biblical practice of the 'laying on of hands" wasn't for making more apostles nor for succession.
That along with the fact that the office of 'bishop' has no New Testament authority or precedent, which denies any false claims of succession. Trying to appeal to the Old Testament to force ‘apostolic succession when none is there, is lame indeed.
Joshua didn't succeed Moses. Moses had a unique and special calling and role. Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land because Moses screwed up and God told him he couldn’t enter.
Besides that, the leadership structure of the former congregation in the wilderness is utterly defunct under the New Covenant, as the Book of Hebrews makes very clear in Hebrews 7:12.
Matthias being chosen to replace Judas as the 12th apostle is also not succession because Judas betrayed the Lord. So, Matthias being chosen to replace Judas is only proof to replace ungodly leaders, such as Judas, when necessary.
Plus, the one chosen had to an eyewitness while Christ was still with them and witnessed the crucifixion and Christ being taken up.
Nowhere in the New Testament are any of the twelve apostles ever recorded as passing on their apostolic authority to successors.
Nowhere do any of the apostles predict that they will pass on their apostolic authority at any point. Jesus ordained the apostles to build the foundations of the church upon the chief cornerstone of HIMSELF.
Mark 9:38-40 and Luke 9:49-50 contain a comment of Jesus too often carelessly overlooked by Catholics and here is what JESUS HIMSELF SAID IN Mark 9:38-40 "And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. Secondly, nowhere in the New Testament is it stated that the office of 'Elder' should be passed on in such a manner either. It’s appropriate to lay hands on a new elder, but this is about requesting God to confer the gifts of ministry upon such a man, it is absolutely nothing to do with “apostolic succession.”
Christ nipped it at the get go so that any future institutional of men who ever claimed exclusive ownership of the gospel message, they would be shown to be without divine authority, which is what Catholicism is.
Also, history of the Catholic Church during the Roman Empire clearly demonstrates that "so-called "apostolic succession" didn't protect this manmade institution from heresy at all.
Most of the heresies in the early Church were either initiated or propagated by the clergy themselves.

My Catholic friends have always said that they believe in salvation through Christ alone, not by works. One of them even said that there was no reason for me to convert (not that I was asking, but theoretically) because we're all part of the body of Christ. The way you're talking about it, it does sound like they don't really understand or believe every single bit of Catholic theology. That's probably a good thing because I truly believe they are saved. Their view of salvation has always been the same as mine.

In the book "Roman but not Catholic" they talk about a survey that determined a huge portion of Catholics are "functionally protestant." They don't believe many of the teachings of the catholic faith but are still "catholic." It's not surprising, therefore, that your friends think this way. Individual catholics are deeply divided on what they actually believe. Admittedly, that's no different than protestants. But this idea that all catholics believe the same things, the "universal" teachings of the church, is simply a myth.

That you also need the church and indulgences and even if you perfectly follow church doctrine you must endure purgatory. Even the pope, God's man on earth has to go to purgatory. Can you not see how this cheapens the sacrifice of Jesus? His sacrifice was enough! The Bible tells us so over and over. While hanging on the cross he said i"t is finished". He took our sins to the grave with him. All of them past, present, and future. When you are born again you go to heaven, there is no purgatory nor is there a need. You are judged, either born again, or guilty. Jesus didn't tell the thief on the cross he was going with him to purgatory, he said paradise. God says when you are born again he casts you sins as far as the east is from the west. He says he will remember them no more. Acts 4:12 says salvation exists in no other. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life:no man cometh unto the Father but by me. (John 14:6). Jesus said except a man be born again he cannot see the Kingdom of God.

So: "You(m) are stone and on this(f) stone I will build my church."

Also in the Peshitta, in 2 Thessalonians 2:15, it says "commandments" instead of "traditions".

How do you answer the following comeback from Catholics per authority of the church to interpret scripture: that is Protestants have final authority as well at the local church or denomination , ex Westminster confession. Practically, if a congregant member opposes church doctrine, they are “dealt with” and church leaders assume the reason Thy to interpret and apply by the authority of leadership and Holy Spirit leading. Are we Protestants doing the same thing but on a smaller scale? The church seemed to be called to live and act in community with Jesus our head pastor, but decisions and judgements must be made.
The reason it’s different is because when a single Church claims to have the unique, infallible truth of interpretation, that Church is exposed for being unbiblical, and they eventually get relegated into being a cult. One church saying that they believe in predestination and another saying they believe in free will isn’t the same as claiming the mantle of ultimate authority on doctrinal matters because making a decision based off evidence isn’t the same as demanding you alone have the infallible truth. Someone who believes in free will is fully welcomed into a predestination church, and the opposite is true. The individual church doesn’t claim to be the authority, they base their ideas off the ultimate and infallible authority of God’s words and God’s doctrine.
Protestants listen to leaders but don’t and should never just listen to what the leader says and believe it. Protestants put bibles in pews and at the ends of isles and in community hubs so that anyone can double check what the pastor said against the Bible itself. Jesus was taught in The Temple, but the rabbis weren’t His authority. He spent his ministry rebuking rabbis because they weren’t following the true authority of the scriptures-the true authority of God.
No human leader, Protestant or Catholic, has equal authority to the Bible. The reason the Bible is the authority is because it’s the infallible Word of God. The reason the Bible is the authority is because when God came down in the flesh as Jesus, he told the people to search the scriptures, and that the scriptures would prove His identity. The reason the Bible is our authority is because God told us in (I think) Deuteronomy to test all prophets and spirits with their submission and accuracy to the scriptures and with short-term prophecy.
God Himself, when He came as Jesus didn’t demand blind faith in spite of the scriptures, but affirmed their authority in proving His own divinity. God is our authority, and God uses the scriptures as an authoritative source to prove that He was God. So if we believe that God is sending us a message, if it doesn’t 1,000% line up with the entire catalog of scripture, it’s not true. God used the Bible as authority, God is the authority, so Protestants follow God’s leadership and trust the authority or scriptures over the authority of pastors, rabbis, priests, or popes. God first.
I’m not sure if that answers the idea. If it doesn’t I’m sorry and would like to hear the idea reworded maybe?
But the best option for them, if they have the grace and patience, would be to find a good, local Protestant Church and talk to the pastor about this question. It’s a good question. But the best use of the question is to remind people to not take what the pastor says wholesale and to not get complacent in their challenging for truth and to always ask questions.

You can't argue that the Bible is is a sufficient authority. Baptists and Lutherans both hold to Sola Scriptura, yet both believe in vastly different doctrines. Which one is right? They can both make their arguments with Scripture.
The Bible without an authoritative Church is just a person reading their own theology into the Scriptures.
I think the issue with that is that regardless of whether that's true or not, Catholicism has made huge mistakes in their own interpretation. There are things that we CAN know about
God and things that we definitely cannot fully understand.
Things we can know?
1. God is a triune God - he is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
2. The Bible is inspired of God, it is his very word and revelation.
3. Human beings are separated from God by their sin, and need to be reconciled to him by
repenting from sin and believing in Jesus.
3. Jesus was God and Man, the God-man, who came to show us the way the God - himself.
4. Jesus atoned for our sins on the cross, to save sinners.
5. When we believe in Jesus, we are justified by our faith and made right with God.
6. We live our lives out of love for God and for people, as love is the fulfillment of the law
and is the way of Jesus. Our mandate is to preach the gospel and to make disciples of
Jesus.
7. God has given us the holy spirit to fill us, sanctify us, and to empower us to share the
gospel.
8. there is a real heaven and hell, the eternal destination of the righteous (through faith in
Christ/being a part of God's people) and the damned, those who reject God and remain
seperated from him.
9. Jesus will come back, in the end, to bring in the full manifestation of the new creation.
You are wrong. The problem is not the bible....its people twisting the bible to suit their own beliefs instead of letting the bible speak for itself. And...there it is. I am not Catholic on similar grounds. Christ did not say, 'Here you go Peter, take the crown & rule until I return.'. The fact is, the early church was united in message, not structure. Everyone had there field to work, but the only united part was the belief in Christ & following the books of the now Old Testament. The New Testament was most likely oral at this point, & the letters would be copied later to help people know, & later still the Gospels. This idea of a constant structure with a head is false teaching. There were stewards for Christ in each local church, not one head steward.
You need leadership,that is true. That is still something that developed. The ability of the Pope to change the Bible is unfortunate. The church organization needs to give interpretations & set rules, but they are not able to change, add, or omit what Christ taught. Odds are the Pope will again.
I like the feel of being Catholic, like I like the feel of being Mormon. The trappings are very sweet smelling to the senses, but that sweetness is the smell of rot. No offense to Catholics, parts of my extended family are Catholic, & Mormon. That does not fix what they teach.

The early church was run more by James. The Pope runs into issues if he wants to say Peter was the first Pope. It also gets to what that verse meant.
Is that saying true? You have Jesus saying this, & it is true, but there are many rocks in a foundation (assuming Peter is the rock). Peter's testimony was critical, & heavy on the Gospels. What of Paul? What of James? What of the 10 others that were left & the 1 elected to fill the 12? There were many rocks, Peter was just the lead in that case.
Christ is the cornerstone, not just a rock. He is what the Church is founded on, not Peter. I would say that the phrase, 'on this rock', is referring to the teaching, not Peter. The teaching is the bedrock to build your faith on, Christ the cornerstone to set your lines by.
Keep going to church, no doubt.

I never said the Pope altered the text of the Bible. What he did do is add books, claim Peter is the first Pope (although James probably lead the church first, even though not being called a disciple), & the Early church had no defined head really, but rather multiple persons who lead different parts of the church, but only united in Christ. The first Pope made up a position & filled it. Maybe for good or ill, that is God's domain.
The Pope has also required you believe much, even if the Bible is unclear on that point, or silent on it. Purgatory would be a good point there. So there is much the Pope has done of his own accord.
I want to still leave you this. I don't think the Pope means harm, nor do I think he is being unjust in execution of his duties. I just think his duties aren't his to execute.
Stay faithful to Christ, even if you doubt a church. Reform & unification is needed. I bear no ill will to Catholics. I would have to hate much of my own family to do that, & I don't.

The real irony of “Bible alone” is those who claim it heard it from someone else, it is not in the Bible. The Bible doesn’t even have a table of content to tell followers what books should be contained in the Bible.

Not only do Catholics hear that Matt 16:18 in CCD their whole lives...I asked a priest about why Peter isn't mentioned in Acts past Chap 15, and the priest became menacing, threatening. Even asking the question will cause some Catholics to become hostile, without any real thought or reason, other than the threat to the authority of the RCC.
So if Scripture isn't written the way you want it, then Jesus either lied in Matt 16 or he was misquoted. Yes, every man is his own pope.

The Catholic Church was not established on Matthew's Gospel. It was founded on Jesus' words spoken to the apostles in Aramaic and in which cephas meant only "rock". No serious Protestant scholar accepts the silly petra argument.

Jesus may have said it in Aramaic, but the Holy Spirit, God, inspired the author, Matthew, to write his original in Greek.
Nonetheless, the context reveals the word play Jesus used to emphasize that His church will be built on Himself, the Word of God referred to in John 1. Peter, while an amazing apostle and wonderful man of God, was simply not referred to as anything sort of 'bishop of Rome.'

The church was established on the words of Jesus long before Matthew wrote anything. It was established on Peter as its leader. I think that carries the day. Your interpretation of Matthew contradicts what was actually done. No scholar accepts the petra/petros argument as carrying any weight.
Jesus clearly said that he was building his church on the Cephas he had just named. Jesus is the king of his kingdom and Peter is his master of the palace.
Peter having authority in Rome would be a miracle since Romans were Hostile to Christians during Peter's life-time. No church had that kind of public influence in Rome let alone the catholic church. I believe they have to bypass the reality of History to make this claim. Rome wouldn't come to accept Christianity until around 312 years later when Constantine was reported to have converted to Christianity and thus outlawed persecution of Christians.
And then the obvious fact that in order to make Christianity more palatable to a pagan and polytheistic culture, they had to infuse rituals and practices, borrowed from the occult and paganism. That’s exactly what Roman Catholicism is! It’s the amalgam of the occult and Christianity. Just look at their unhealthy and obsessive preoccupation with exorcism, demons, praying to the dead, i.e., saints and Mary. These behaviors are anti-Christian and come straight from the occult and paganism.
Catholic apologists will quote Galatians 1:8. That verse doesn’t slow them down. They take it to mean Scripture and any teaching declared magisterium of the Church.

One of the most scandalous discourses Jesus ever gave was his “bread of life” discourse in the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel. Because Catholics are so thoroughly familiar with the idea of Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist, we sometimes fail to appreciate just how scandalous his words about eating flesh to drinking blood must have been for his hearers.
First of all, Jesus’ words must have sounded like an invitation to cannibalism. The very repugnance of the idea of eating human flesh and drinking blood surely underscored their objection, “How can this man give us (his) flesh to eat?” (John 6:52). Even today, many non-Catholics have difficulties with the Real Presence for the same reason. How Jesus answers this objection is very important. He doesn’t back down on the claim that he is going to give us his flesh and blood to eat, but rather explains how he is going to give it by saying, “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink” (John 6:55).
If Jesus gave us his flesh and blood to eat and drink as flesh and blood, that would be cannibalism. But Jesus doesn’t do this. He gives us his body and blood as true food and true drink. In other words, he gives us his flesh and blood under the modality or the species of food and drink (bread and wine), as true food and drink. And there’s nothing repugnant about partaking of food and drink.
There is also another problem. Jesus’ original audience was Jewish, and they knew that the Law of Moses prohibited drinking blood. So even if Christ could give them his flesh and blood as true food and true drink, they would still be violating God’s law by ingesting blood (cf. Genesis 9:3-4, etc.). How does Jesus address this problem?
First, let’s look at the prohibition itself. Why were the Israelites forbidden to eat flesh with blood in it? Leviticus 17:10-12 states:
“And if anyone, whether of the house of Israel or of the aliens residing among them, partakes of any blood, I will set myself against that one who partakes of blood and will cut him off from among his people. Since the life of a living body is in its blood, I have made you put it on the altar, so that atonement may thereby be made for your own lives, because it is the blood, as the seat of life, that makes atonement. That is why I have told the Israelites: No one among you, not even a resident alien, may partake of blood.”
Leviticus gives two reasons for its prohibition: First, blood was seen as the seat of life (i.e., “life of the living body is in its blood”). Second, blood, being the seat of life, was what was to be offered in sacrifice for atonement for the lives of the people.
Jesus answers both of these points, but in reverse order. In John 6:51, Jesus says “… and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” Like the blood that was poured out on the altars to make atonement for their own lives in the Old Covenant, Jesus is going to give his flesh “for the life of the world.” The separation of blood from the body that Leviticus speaks of occurred with Christ, both on the cross when his side was pierced and sacramentally at the Last Supper when Jesus consecrated the bread and wine separately, showing a separation of blood from the body.
But the blood is the “seat of life.” Isn’t that why Leviticus prohibited blood in the first place? Jesus answers this objection in John 6:53 and 57 when he says, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. … Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.” By partaking of Christ’s flesh and blood, we partake of Christ’s divine life.

You were a bad Catholic. You never read the Vatican II document "Dei Verbum" or the Apostolic Exhortation "Verbum Domini" both of which encouraged Catholics to read and meditate on the Bible. You also didn't know that you qualified for an indulgence under the usual conditions if you read and meditated on the Gospel for at least 30 minutes every Sunday. I go for Mass every day. I read the Mass readings BEFORE Mass. I do Lectio Divina on the readings AFTER Mass. I also recite the Liturgy of the Hours (Divine Office) which has 12 psalms per day and a long passage from the Bible in the the hour called "Office of Readings". And I have only been a Catholic for 2 years! To God be the glory!

Forgive me. The thing that keeps popping into my head is a kind of snarky redirection of your question, "Why do I need you? Isn't the Bible enough?" If there is no need for interpretation of the Bible and the historical facts, then why are we listening to this video? And if we can't just come to this stuff on our own, then don't we need a church with some authority to help guide us? I grew up Evangelical, but became Catholic. I was torn for some time, but ultimately the Bible favored the Catholic position, especially on the establishment of a Church that had authority to settle disputes. See Acts.

The Bible will only favor the Catholic position when it is taken out of its context and distorted to fit the Catholic narratives. I am not saying that the "church' is not set up as an authority to help settle disputes, but WHO the church is remains the real issue..... The book of Acts does not establish Rome as the Church Christ established. Peter was not the first pope either... Sacred Tradition serves as a rule of faith by showing what the Church has believed consistently through the centuries and how it has always understood any given portion of the Bible. I am a practicing Catholic and read the Bible and I’m in love with our lord Jesus Christ. The Pope protects the truth given by Jesus passed on thru the succession of St. Peter first Pope, Jesus said “ and the gates of hell will not prevail against my Church” which is his Universal Church- in Greek universal is Catholic and we follow it. You are your own Pope. The Pope does not interpret the Bible his own way . Sacred Tradition serves as the Church’s living memory, reminding her of what the faithful have constantly and consistently believed and how to properly understand and interpret the meaning of Biblical passages. Vatican 1 and 2 and other council do not interpret or change doctrine. You were reading it and telling them what it meant and that’s not what it said. You have a good heart but have half the truth. Yes, there has been horrible things that has happened and definitely not ok. Jesus warned us it would happen and not to follow them but what you don’t understand is that we follow our Lord Jesus Christ not the Pope. You should read again 2 Thessalonians 2:14(15) “ Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by WORD, or by our epistle.” (Letter). You are not accepting the oral Tradition and it is says it CLEARLY there, why? Apostolic oral tradition has clearly been maintained, just as Our Lord promised it would be, through the safeguarding of the Holy Spirit John 16:13.We are One, Holy, Catholic Apostolic Church. @@MG-zx2sp As one who grew up a Roman Catholic I can confirm that your challenge to Mike Winger here is completely wrong. Mike Winger's teaching here, that you challenge in your comments, is spot on. Various Catholic Councils over the millennia have done exactly that ... changed doctrine. The biggest errors are
(1) what it means to be born again: see John 3 (in context also of John 1:12-13) and Jesus' meeting at night with Nicodemus. This was a turning point for me in my own journey to true faith. Roman Catholic teaching that this occurs without any active choice of the baby as it is baptised. This is the biggest sticking point because, like the doctrines of the Pharisees, it actively prevents people asking the question of Nicodemus in John 3:4 which leads to the opening of the heart to God for salvation. Nothing is more important than this. A similar concept is found in Luke 10:25 & Luke 18:18. The Pharisees taught, effectively, a 'salvation by works' as a substitute for surrendering of the heart to God himself. In these Luke references Jesus urges the hearers to "follow me". When one puts the two "Born Again" and "Follow me" concepts together correctly in context one has the essence of the Gospel of salvation. This was not taught in the RC church at all, as I was growing up, and it wasn't taught in the Roman Catholic Grammar School that I attended for seven years (including 6th form).
(2) traditions that become more important than the Word of God: Mike made the link between the Pharisee-ism of Jesus' day and the Catholicism as it is now in the 21st Century is absolutely spot on. It was something that held me bound in its lies for several years.
(3) "The Catholic Church teaches that sacred Tradition contains nothing whatsoever that is contrary to the Bible.": That is the trick that I used to fall for. The church teaches... and so Catholics stop looking at this critically. Actually the Roman Catholicism has invented a lot of teaching that is massively contrary to the Bible. Let's name just a few: purgatory; what it means to be Born Again; salvation by Faith alone, apart from works; Peter was the first head of the church in Rome; the Assumption of Mary into heaven; Transubstantiation. None of these teachings of Catholicism are biblical concepts, they have been "invented" by the Roman Catholic Church over the centuries. You have used phrases like " constantly and consistently believed" which, as Mike has pointed out clearly, both here and elsewhere, with evidence, just is not true.

Towards the end of your discourse, you mention some French catholic theologian but fail to mention his name. You also say he performed a census on the church fathers to see who claimed Peter was the rock. None of those number add up, because there were only 8 church fathers, and all of them unanimously agreed upon the meaning of Matthew 16.

Protestantism is not a Religion but a Religious Philosophy. It is a belief in Christ, to be sure, but then it remains a hearer and not doer of The Word. There is no substance or forms of worship and thanksgiving to Jesus God and Saviour for His work of Creation and Redemption.
Catholics, on the other hand, believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in Holy Communion -Eucharist which is the Greek word for Thanksgiving. The Mass is truly both a form of Worship and Thanksgiving. Other forms include Eucharistic Adorations, Benedictions, Eucharistic Processions, etc.
Protestantism does not take account that the same Jesus issued Commandments - not suggestions - for which there are penalties for non-compliance. It ignores that God tests each and every person and consequences in not fulfilling these tests or running away like Jonah It bypasses that humans are still under the influence of our Fallen Natures whereby we sin - even mortally - 1John 5:16-17 - and do works of the flesh that would disqualify us from Heaven - Galatians 5:19-21. On the way to Calvary, Jesus cautioned the women of Jerusalem - Luke 23:28-31 - to weep for themselves and their children for forthcoming days of great sorrow. As God, Jesus foreknew the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD, which was not only the result of the Jews not acknowledging the time of the Visitation of their Messiah, Jesus, but also because of their sins, especially of their hypocritical leaders - the Scribes, Chief Priests and Pharisees Thus for Protestants to believe that - all - sins are eternally forgiven and covered by the precious Blood of Jesus is false. The RCC never made an official pronouncement on the canon in an ecumenical council (supposedly infallible) until Trent in 1563
Before Trent the apocrypha was not universally accepted. Augistine accepted it, others did not.

U r correct. I started questioning it more the more I learned! Original altars had bones or relics of "saints" inside. This is against Jewish and Christian doctrines on necromancy and idol worship. Also I never knew they actually call Mary a co-redemptrix. THAT really got to me as I was not taught that in CCD!

I’m Catholic! I read the Bible daily. I love reading the gospels. Jesus is absolutely beautiful. God doesn’t favor us more or better than those we judge, so it is a waste of time acting like we are more righteous than someone else. We are all Gods children. Following Jesus is a beautiful way to live.
Imagine if we only had an hour to live. Should we waste our time judging others, or embracing the word of God.
Let’s say you had a used truck, and you went to sell it. Someone is always going to value it more than someone else, and that is what it is to fight about who thinks they follow Christ better. God’s love for us is greater than every ounce of gold on this earth. He loves us all. We could go back and forth on who’s wrong or who’s right. The beatitudes ( sermon on the mount) tells us not to do that.
My mother’s side is Protestant and my fathers side of the family is Catholic. Why condemn each other. It’s not what Jesus would do.

Tradition is what passed down the Catholic faith to all Christians for the first 300ish years before it was accepted by the Roman Empire.

There were 30 Catholic Popes Before there was even a Bible by 397AD. Saint Linus the second Pope is in the Bible too.
After 1517 Martin Luther took 7 books out of the Old Testament translating the Bible into German. This is one reason why Protestants don’t understand the sacraments and traditions passed down for 2,000 years. Not the only reason though.
1534 King Henry the 8th started the Protestant church for corrupt reasons.
During these times if you didn’t follow the king or queens religion you would be persecuted. A new king or queen would take over and change the religion. Then persecuted people who didn’t make the change.
Religions would change multiple times in less than a few years in some recorded cases.
400 years ago Amsterdam was the safest place to live because people didn’t have to worry about kings and queens changing religions and persecuting people.
For fifteen hundred years 100% of Christians believed in the Eucharist (means thanksgiving)
The Catholic Church uses a book called a Missal that reads 4 parts of the Bible every daily Mass, and it takes 3 years to cycle through the whole Bible. Anyone can get one. It has prayers stations of the cross etc.
The Bible is being honored and read every single day. Every Christian is welcome to go to mass every day 7 days a week and participate in this.
We Catholics live so much by the New Testament that we take it’s traditions very seriously. The sacraments like baptism and the Eucharist etc.
Bible alone is not enough. Tradition must be honored.
The Act of the Apostles ends with Saint Paul continuing his mission . Saint Paul and Saint Peters death are not in the Bible but we honor what they did and their martyrdom, non the less.
There have been thousands of Saints continuing Gods word, from that point but not written in the Bible. They matter. What they have done in the name of Jesus matters.
There have also been thousands of apparitions of Mary too. We adore her, and so should you!
Saint Ignatius of Antioch is among many who prove Catholic tradition. He was a bishop of Antioch ( modern day Turkey) alive when Peter and Paul were alive.
He died in 105AD. He has very impressive letters that prove Catholic tradition.

Tradition is absolutely important. Solo scriptura is A Protestant heresy that began in the 1600’s.
William Tindal didn’t translate it until 1610 and there were already Bibles translated in English before that. Many of his interpretation were way off, but, Hey it’s a tough task for anyone.

The Idea of the Roman Catholic church (from what I’ve learned) is fear. When I learned of catholicism, I was truly afraid for/of my relationship with christ. Because the non-denominational side of me said “They’re wrong, I don’t have to he unified with the pope to get to heaven” And another side that said “But your eternal life depends on it. But Jesus who is God said, “The only way to the Father, is through me” John 14:6
And this verse has so many meanings… It has to do with prayer, connection, and the eternal life with the Father in heaven.
