    The Yaris Cross GR SPORT has a sportier look, with dedicated 18'' dark grey alloy wheels, bespoke sporty seats with red stitching, and GR and GR SPORT badges both on the outside and inside of the car. Also, suspensions have been tuned for a more engaging drive.
    The Yaris Cross follows the Yaris hatchback in adopting an additional, more powerful hybrid powertrain - the “Hybrid 130”. This “dual hybrid” strategy widens the model’s customer appeal, particularly to people who want a more compact vehicle, without forgoing power and performance. In the B-segment, around 50% of new customers are “downsizing” their choice of vehicle.
    The hybrid powertrain is the number one deciding factor for people choosing to buy Yaris Cross. They have more choice than ever before from the 100% hybrid line-up: two different powertrains (a unique-in-class offer) and front or intelligent all-wheel drive.
    In the new Hybrid 130, the established 1.5-litre full hybrid system has a new transaxle with a larger and more powerful electric motor-generator (MG1). This, together with adjustments to the power control unit (PCU), delivers a 12% increase in total system output, from 116 DIN hp/85 kW to 130 DIN hp/96 kW. At the same time, the MG2 motor’s torque has been increased across the entire rev band, with the maximum rising by 30% from 141 to 185 Nm.
    The result is faster acceleration, with the 0-100 km/h time reduced by half a second to 10.7 seconds and the 80-120 km/h overtaking benchmark brought down by 0.4 seconds to 8.9 seconds. Where CO2 emissions are concerned, the impact is modest: the new system achieves a best-in-class 101-116 g/km, while fuel economy is 4.5-5.2 l/100 km. This compares to figures for the Hybrid 115 of 101-115 g/km and 4.5-5.1 l/100 km.
    These statistics are only part of the story; equally significant is the impact on the driving experience. Engine, drive motor and hybrid battery performance have all been maximised. Along with a higher level of torque at all engine speeds, this gives the car a more dynamic and responsive feel with acceleration and deceleration performance that adds enjoyment to every drive, with more responsive performance on urban streets and confident overtaking acceleration on the open road.
    The Hybrid 115 system has built Yaris Cross’ reputation for exceptional efficiency (notably the model set a new record in the UK’s ‘What Car?’ magazine fuel economy testing). This quality remained a prime consideration in development of the new Hybrid 130. Its greater electric power allows for EV driving at higher speeds and it also allows the engine to operate in its high efficiency range more frequently, enhancing fuel economy. At the same time, there’s greater acceleration power and sharper response at low speeds.
    Further improvement of the engine’s thermal efficiency and reduced losses throughout the powertrain through precise control of every element mean less energy is used, CO2 emissions are reduced, and the vehicle’s driving range is improved.
    The increased output from the hybrid battery means the engine can operate at lower rpm at start-up and under acceleration. The increase in initial acceleration responsiveness means there is closer co-ordination between the rise in the engine’s revs and sound and the vehicle’s speed, significantly reducing the “rubber band” effect associated with continuously variable transmissions (CVTs).
