    SUVs can be a mixed bag. Some earn their reputation because satisfied owners genuinely love them and scored great deals, while others gain popularity solely through slick advertising. And then, there are the ones that are popular because they're genuinely excellent.
    What's considered 'popular' varies from person to person, and sometimes, it's a marketing ploy to get you to buy. But we've done the research and identified some SUVs you should steer clear of.
    We've got alternative options for each of these overhyped SUVs. These alternatives aren't just popular because of flashy ads and low prices - they're reliable and come with low maintenance costs. So, make a wise choice and avoid the SUV pitfalls!"

It's always a challenge to include every worthy mention, but the CX-5 is undeniably a strong contender in the SUV segment. Thanks for bringing it to the forefront; it's a great recommendation! I have a 2016 Nissan Rogue SV, and it’s been really reliable so far. I bought it in 2018 and thankfully I only commute to work 3 times a week, so I don’t have a ton of miles on it. It’s around 83,000 right now and I bought it with 30,000 miles. I pretty much only drive it on Eco mode to save on gas and it still has pretty good rev to get up and go. Really great car. I’ve been debating upgrading my car and looked at the new rogues, but I haven’t really been impressed with the new body style and the interior pretty much hasn’t changed at all. I think I’ll keep my old rogue for a little while longer.

      That's great to hear that your 2016 Rogue has been serving you well! It's always a bonus when a car is not only reliable but also efficient in terms of fuel economy. Nissan Rogues have had their fair share of both admirers and critics, so it's enlightening to hear positive long-term experiences like yours. While it's understandable that the new design might not appeal to everyone, sticking with a tried-and-true vehicle, especially when it's still running well, is often a wise choice. Whenever you do decide to upgrade, make sure it aligns with what you truly want in a vehicle. Happy driving and here's to many more miles with your trusty Rogue!

      I’m glad you’re having a positive experience with your Nissan. For me personally based on my experiences with my own Nissans, I’m never going back to Nissan again. 2013 Pathfinder and 2018 Versa Note. I’m curious though. Was yours made in Japan? Look at your VIN. If it starts with a J, it’s made in Japan. My pathfinder vin starts with a 5; made in USA. My Versa Note starts with a 3; made in Mexico. No problems with both engines. But poor workmanship all around for both cars. From AC leaks to engine mounts failing early to electronics failing. Plastic parts inside falling off. Gas struts giving out early. It’s like one after another.

    At the first recommendation for a car with a CVT transmission I lost the faith. I've had 3 cars with CVT and what I can say is that they actually get better gas mileage but the reliability is far from acceptable, and the acceleration is way worse than a sequential transmission, they're also more delicate and don't like you to tow. I have a hard time trying to understand why reputable brands like Subaru and Honda keep forcing CVTs into their cars. There's nothing like a good sequential transmission, if possible I'd also avoid DCT, they're quick but its increased complexity make them more expensive to maintain. Nowadays the factors I look when planning to get a new car are NOT having a CVT, it must have Apple Carplay and Adaptive Cruise Control, no less than 7 airbags, and a good evaluation in Euroncap and/or IIHS. Even the gas consumption can be greatly improved if you drive consciously.
    The other trend that I really don't like is putting the climate settings in the screen without physical buttons, I understand it's for lowering costs but it's so annoying, and using capacitive buttons as well. So, dear car manufacturers, please consider that forcing the driver to take her/his eyes off the road to be able to point to the right button drawing on a screen is way more dangerous than not having emergency autobrakes.

      ChatGPT
      Your perspective raises several valid points, and it's evident you've put thought into your vehicle preferences based on past experiences. CVTs do have their merits in terms of fuel efficiency, but as you've pointed out, there can be concerns about reliability, driving experience, and suitability for tasks like towing.
      The points about safety and user-friendly design are spot on. The integration of touchscreens in modern vehicles, while it can look sleek and modern, does sometimes come at the expense of ease-of-use and safety. Physical buttons provide tactile feedback and can be operated without taking one's eyes off the road, which touchscreens generally cannot match.
      Safety tests like those from Euro NCAP and IIHS indeed provide an essential measure of a vehicle's protective capabilities. Your preference for features like Apple Carplay and Adaptive Cruise Control shows a blend of wanting both technology and safety.
      Manufacturers are constantly evolving and hopefully, with feedback like yours, they can strike a balance between innovation, convenience, and safety. It's essential for consumers to voice their opinions so that companies can adjust and provide the best products possible.

      Our household has owned FOUR Subarus, 1 Prius, 1 Ford Fiesta (all with CVT) and not one problem with transmission. Yes, they are clunky, slow, difficult to get used to...but once you have the car for a couple of months and put through its paces, it's no big deal. Nothing like getting 29 CITY/32 HYW on an Outback packed with 4 people and bags on vacation. I agree they suck on passing (dangerous anyway), and definitively not made for towing.
      Below are the vehicles, including hybrids, that offer CVTs or eCVTs for the 2024 model year. If you're telling me that the world's best and most reliable car brands (with their BEST SELLING MODELS) believe that sequential transmissions are superior to CVT, then you may want to call them and let them know.

      Hi @@desanjuanaestambul,
      just to clarify a couple of points:
      1. I don't think what the brands are offering is necessarily the best there is from the mechanical point of view. Cost comes first, and if they invested in developing a CVT and it worked well at tests, they'll throw it in. Innovation is part of the game, and it's valid to give it a try. That doesn't mean it will last for 10 years or that it will be the best choice for a long term ownership. As a matter of fact keep in mind that car industry gets more income from maintenance and repairs that from selling new cars. For Rolls-Royce the cost is not a point, but durability, power and comfort are, and none of their models offers a CVT. No car with a very powerful engine does, as a matter of fact.
      2. If sequential gearboxes are better than CVTs from their resilience and durability is out of question, there are already real life results you can verify. Sequential are stronger, able to handle more power and last longer than CVTs. CVTs help you spend less fuel at the cost of power loss. If you prefer spending less in fuel and don't plan to keep your car for a long time, and you don't mind pushing your throttle hard and needing to plan further ahead taking over other vehicles, CVT is good.
      I'm not saying CVTs are a bad thing, just that they don't last as long as sequential, you can't tow as much and you won't be able to use all the power your engine can provide, but there are benefits; they will sip less fuel and if you mainly drive in the city at slow speeds you'll be happy with a CVT, which also provides an EV like regime, although some CVTs will emulate gear changing, not sure why they do this.
      In my personal opinion, and anyone of course can disagree, after owning 3 cars with CVT gearboxes, 5 with sequential, plus other 8 with manual transmission, I prefer a sequential automatic for the reasons mentioned above. The manual transmission, although being probably the most enduring, take part of your concentration, a leg and an arm to be constantly working, convenient only for having fun, not for everyday driving or long trips. Sequential automatic to me looks like the sweet spot for internal combustion engines transmissions.

    Glad to see the HRV so highly rated. Not sure when I would be in the market since the Element is still going strong, but it won’t last forever (see below). But they don’t make them anymore and the HRV is a possibility: a good compromise between economy and cargo capacity. ( My wife’s car is a Prius C, a fantastic road trip car but essentially a two-passenger vehicle if you have luggage.)
    20 MPG overall being “pretty good” for a small SUV is a bit surprising. My 2007 AWD Honda Element (215,000 miles) does that with the aerodynamics of a slightly rounded brick. It is geared too low: my best was about 28 mpg at an average of 70 mph. The engine is just not onto the torque curve at more legal highway speeds. A consequence of sharing the drive train with the CRV, which is probably lighter and definitely more aerodynamic.
    I think of it as more of a really short cargo van rather than an SUV, so I don’t know that the comparison is valid.

      @AutoEnginee  6 місяців тому

      I'm sorry to hear about the troubles you've experienced with your 2020 Nissan Rogue. Electrical issues can be particularly frustrating as they're often more difficult to diagnose and can lead to unpredictable reliability. It's disappointing, especially when it comes with high repair costs and the inconvenience of being left stranded.
      While any car can potentially have problems, it's always a good idea to look into extended warranties or service plans if you're facing repeated issues, as these can sometimes help mitigate the cost of repairs. Additionally, checking if there are any recalls or technical service bulletins for your specific problems could provide a no-cost fix or at least shed light on the issue.
      It's also worth noting that while some models are known for their reliability, individual vehicles can vary greatly due to numerous factors like manufacturing variances, maintenance history, and usage patterns. I hope your Rogue's issues get resolved soon and it proves more reliable in the future. If you're in the market for a new car, it's always wise to research and even consider looking into reliability ratings and owner reviews for any model you're interested in.

    Any reasons why Nissan won't sell the e-power Rogue in the US? Having a 2016 CVT Rogue (X Trail around here) without any issues I don't fancy the CVT's lack of engine brake and overall feeling but that car does what it's supposed to flawlessly. We recently got the e-power version (no CVT this time as it runs on electric engines) and it's been a blast so far.

    • @AutoEnginee
      @AutoEnginee  6 місяців тому +1

      Certainly! Nissan hasn't released official information regarding why the e-Power Rogue isn't sold in the US. Initially, they introduced e-Power in smaller vehicles to analyze consumer behavior and work towards their carbon neutrality goals. The e-Power technology offers a blend of electric and gasoline power, eliminating some downsides of CVT transmissions like the one in your 2016 Rogue. It's fantastic to hear you've enjoyed the e-Power version!
      There's hope, though. Rumors hint that the 2024 Rogue may introduce the e-Power hybrid system to the US, aligning with Nissan's wider electrification ambitions. So, there might be a chance for US residents to experience this hybrid system in the near future. Your positive experience with the e-Power version surely adds to the anticipation!

    I've found all CVT transmissions not lasting much over 100,000 miles by just googling individual cars of this type. The RAV4 and Mazda series are the only ones left that don't use CVT. The Rav4 is marked up and you'll probably have to wait for a new one. The CX30 has space issues especially in the rear leg room area. The CX5 and CX50 seem like they would be a better alternative for an SUV starting under 30k.

    • @AutoEnginee
      @AutoEnginee  6 місяців тому +4

      You bring up a valid concern regarding CVT transmissions. Their longevity has been a topic of discussion among car enthusiasts. It's true, the RAV4 and Mazda series have opted for traditional transmissions, which many people appreciate. As for the space concerns in the CX30, you're spot on; the CX5 and CX50 do offer more room and can be a better fit for those needing the extra space. Thanks for your insightful comment, it adds depth to the discussion and helps those considering their next purchase!

      I believe that all Toyota Hybrids have an e-cvt which works completely differently than a cvt (NO belts etc), an I think that the Cross also uses this same e-cvt. I drive a Toyota Hybrid (Prius C)myself hence my research before buying. Does the Cross not use the same e-cvt?

    • @AutoEnginee
      @AutoEnginee  6 місяців тому +1

      @@MrErichuizer You're absolutely right! Toyota's hybrid system uses an e-CVT (electronic continuously variable transmission), which is fundamentally different from traditional belt-driven CVTs found in many other vehicles. The e-CVT in Toyota hybrids relies on planetary gearsets and electric motors, so there are no belts or pulleys involved. As for the Toyota Cross, if it's based on Toyota's hybrid system, it would indeed use the e-CVT. Your research is spot on, and it's great to see informed viewers like you engaging with the content.

    I bought a 2023 Blazer RS last month and love it! I did get the V6 and it is plenty powerful enough for me. The only complaint I have is no auto wipers. For the price, and all the other tech it has, I expected auto wipers.

      It's great to hear that you're enjoying your 2023 Blazer RS! The V6 engine in the Blazer is indeed known for providing a good balance of power and performance, which can make for an engaging driving experience.
      The absence of automatic wipers is certainly an interesting omission, especially considering how common this feature has become in new vehicles, often even in lower trims or models. It's surprising given the level of technology equipped in modern cars, like the Blazer, which offers a suite of other advanced features.
      Nevertheless, it's encouraging to know that this is the only major drawback you've found and that it doesn't detract too much from your overall enjoyment of the vehicle. If you feel that this is a feature you really miss, it might be worth inquiring with a dealer to see if there's any possibility of retrofitting or if there's an aftermarket solution that could be integrated into your vehicle. Enjoy your new Blazer!

    Traded my old Lexus rx330 on a Honda hrv, dumped it in under a year, horrible transmission. Traded that on a crosstrek, the ‘safety’ features took time to disable and now it is just an expensive average car. The safety braking would lock them up too far from another car and I nearly got rear ended. The lane keep sees the asphalt patches in the sun as a line and hurls me into another car’s lane. Add to that the crummy gas mileage of 24 hwy and I can’t say this is a car worth buying.

Hubby’s has almost 300 K on it no transmission issues but now Nissan CVT in them. Any advice ?

      Thanks for sharing your experiences and concerns. I completely understand your hesitation towards CVTs given your history. If you're avoiding CVT and are looking for reliable options in the 2023 models, consider:
      Toyota RAV4: It's equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission and has a long-standing reputation for reliability. Plus, Toyota's build quality and resale values have traditionally been high.
      Hyundai Tucson: Hyundai has been impressing with their reliability in recent years. The Tucson comes with a regular automatic or a dual-clutch depending on the powertrain, no CVT.
      Kia Sportage: Sister company to Hyundai, Kia has a similar reputation for building reliable cars recently. The Sportage uses a traditional automatic or dual-clutch, depending on the model.
      Remember, every brand can have occasional issues, but generally, the ones listed above have been well-received in the market. Always a good idea to test drive and check out local reviews specific to your region too! Hope this helps, and best of luck with your car search!

      The MG EHS is MG's plug-in hybrid model, positioned as a premium midsize SUV. It features a 258PS 1.5-liter powertrain with an EV-only range of 52km.
      While it appears to offer a balance of fuel efficiency and electric range due to its hybrid nature, the exact suitability might depend on individual preferences and needs. What about the Hyundai Tucson and the Kia sportage? Are they reliable or unreliable?

    • @AutoEnginee
      @AutoEnginee  6 місяців тому +1

      Both the Hyundai Tucson and the Kia Sportage have built a reputation for being reasonably reliable, especially in their newer iterations. Hyundai and Kia, which operate under the same umbrella, have seen considerable improvements in quality, reliability, and overall value in recent years. Specifically:
      The Hyundai Tucson has garnered positive reliability ratings in recent years. Hyundai's strong warranty offering indicates their confidence in the vehicle's durability. While older models might have had certain issues, the latest versions are generally well-reviewed.
      Similarly, the Kia Sportage has received favorable reliability assessments. Kia's warranty, akin to Hyundai's, is among the industry's best, signaling a vote of confidence in their vehicles. As with the Tucson, while older Sportage models might have faced issues, the more recent ones tend to be reliable.
      However, it's crucial to remember that experiences can vary. One owner might have a perfect experience, while another might encounter problems. Regular maintenance plays a vital role in any vehicle's longevity and reliability. If you're considering used models, it's wise to inspect their maintenance history and check for any recurring issues specific to certain model years.

    I went with the 2023 Compass. I really really wanted to like the CX-30. Took the turbo with premium for a test drive and absolutely hated it. Cargo space was practically non existent. The Compass had everything I wanted in a car and is fun to drive with the new turbo.
    For anyone who’s think it’s so unreliable, I’ll share my own story. I still own a 2012 Jeep Compass I bought new 11 years ago. I now have 134k miles on it…it does not burn oil, engine and transmission work great. I’ve had to spend maybe $1500 over the past decade in repairs (fuel pump, a sensor and blend door actuator). Otherwise just routine maintenance (I.e. oil change, brake pads, etc). It has been a very reliable vehicle for me, so much so that I kept it after buying a new car. Don’t get me wrong there are things I hate about it (CVT is LOUD and overall powertrain leaves much to be desired, fuel economy is not great and the cabin is loaded with cheap plastics). Everything I dislike about the car has been fixed in 2023.
    The only downside to the Compass imho is the price. There are better values out there depending on what you are looking for in a vehicle. I got the Trailhawk model, fully loaded with every available option package for 37k (10k off sticker). Still very pricey but I am very happy with my choice. I spent a significant amount of time researching and test driving other vehicles and just didn’t like any of the others as much.

    • @AutoEnginee
      @AutoEnginee  6 місяців тому

      Your experience with the 2023 Compass highlights that personal preferences and firsthand experiences play a significant role in vehicle selection. The Jeep Compass, especially the newer models, has seen many improvements, and it's great to hear that you're satisfied with your choice. The longevity and minimal issues you've had with your 2012 Compass attest to the potential reliability of some vehicles, despite popular opinions or generalizations. Everyone's priorities when car shopping are different - while some prioritize tech features, others might emphasize space, reliability, or driving dynamics. The key is finding the right balance for your needs and budget.
      As you pointed out, price can indeed be a sticking point for many potential Compass buyers, especially when comparing the value propositions of competing vehicles. But discounts, like the one you got, can make it a bit more palatable.
      Remember, vehicles are a personal choice, and while reviews and statistics can provide guidance, they can't account for individual preferences. Enjoy your new Compass, and here's to many more happy miles on the road!

      I bought a 2019 Compass used with 20K Iles on it back in September of 2019, to use for traveling around USA for leisure. I put a lot of miles on it, but by 100K and one year later I had nothing but problems. Eventually someone ran a red light and totaled it in June of 2022 two weeks after I paid for radiator to be installed. I could go on and on about having two alternators in 8 months apart and the PCM and later the BCM replaced and all of the long hotel stays waiting on parts and repairs, but I won't. I was lucky that most of the vehicle was paid off, therefore I had a good insurance settlement even with 150K miles on the totaled compass...that left me with enough for another vehicle. I was shocked by vehicle prices, so I waited and researched. I wanted a 20203 RAV4 XSE premium, but they were impossible to find and I was not interested in a bidding war. I spotted a new Subaru Forester Wilderness, while I was being driven to Physical therapy back in September. I fell in love with its appearance, which led me to researching it like crazy. I bought one new because 2022 were sold out. I luv my new 2023 Forester Wilderness, Autumn Green Metallic...it was meant to be ❤.

    • @AutoEnginee
      @AutoEnginee  5 місяців тому +1

      It's definitely concerning to hear about such a major issue in a brand-new vehicle like the 2023 Nissan Rogue. Having to replace the motor with less than 200 miles on the odometer is quite unusual and understandably disappointing. It's important for car buyers to be aware of such incidents, as they can influence purchasing decisions.
      In situations like these, it's also vital to understand the warranty and service support offered by the manufacturer. Some buyers might choose to keep the car if the issue is resolved satisfactorily under warranty, while others might prefer to explore different options, as you've suggested.
      Thank you for sharing this experience. Real-world stories like these are incredibly valuable for potential buyers and highlight the importance of thorough research and consideration when purchasing a new vehicle.

    Are 2024 Subaru Crosstreck as good as Honda Or Toyota?

      Great question! The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is indeed a strong competitor in the automotive market, known for its reliability, off-road capability, and unique all-wheel-drive system. Each brand, including Honda and Toyota, has its strengths. For instance, Hondas are renowned for their refined engines and reliability, while Toyotas are celebrated for their durability and resale value. The Subaru Crosstrek stands out with its adventure-ready design and safety features. It's really about what specific features and driving experience you're looking for. If you're interested in off-road adventures and require AWD, the Crosstrek might be a great choice. However, for urban driving and fuel efficiency, Honda and Toyota offer some excellent options.
