I don’t think they have tbh. The suits at these publishers and dev studios are clowns. Pushing micro transactions and other bs on top of pushing their employees until exhaustion; they are responsible. Games used to be made with some heart but that’s barely the case now with most shooters.
Online MP peaked two generations ago during the PS360 era. Just imagine, we had Cod, Battlefield, Halo, Uncharted, Killzone, TLOU, Gears, Resistance all in one generation in their primes. Look at the state of those franchises today.... Either dead or on it's last legs. Online MP today is just F2P riddled with bait and switch tactics from Devs and Publishers to finance their GAAS models.
Halo 3 and CoD4 was the golden era to be honest. “Map pack” releases were such a huge event and it always added new life. God I miss those Xbox Live 360 days.
It's so depressing man, I haven't had fun with an FPS in a long ass time, they all feel so soulless and just meh. Now im stuck playing games just to pass the time and whenever I stop to ask myself if im having fun, the answer is always no.
Yeah i think shooters have peaked. They lost the creativity they once had in the 360 era. Arena shooters are dead, BR is still the wave. Its like fighters in the 90's going to the 2000's its time for another genre to take over now
Xbox didn’t do shit to bring creativity to gaming at ALL during the “360” I haven’t heard of a 360 era. Like WTF is that ??? 🤣 Shooters have been washed up for a long time. I honestly don’t know who is still playing then besides the posers who are still looking for instant gratification. Put it this way, there are people who play Shooters (COD, Fortnite, APEX and HALO) and try to call themselves gamers… and then there are actual gamers
The reason BR took over basic team vs team multiplayer is because winning has stakes in BR. They need to come up with a game mode where people actually care about winning. If not just go back to allowing players to pubstomp. If they do that get rid of SBMM and game mechanics that help bad players but hurt really good players
The variety has gone down. Back in the day I remember typing "new multiplayer shooters" on UA-cam and finding Killzone 3, Bioshock 2, Uncharted 2, Deadspace 2, Borderlands 1, and having fun for days on end. All those games I named had multiplayer and all in different time periods and their own styles.
Online shooters were way better back in the 360/PS3 era. Idk if I have my rose tinted glasses on too tight but back then I think it was because online games still felt somewhat new and I was a kid back then and my main games were Gears of War, Halo, CoD, and Battlefield. I'd play all these games for hours on end. I never jumped on the BR bandwagon either, I only played PUBG a few times with my brother and friend and those games are only fun with people, I couldn't play them solo. I'm still waiting on that one game to remind me of the glory days of online.
IDK what it is but its definitely missing something. Either the community has changed or the shooters have peaked but its something. Tried playing COD4 remastered when it first dropped and it didnt have that same feel it did back in the day
Pretty much, all online shooters have the same framework. Live service, season/battle passes, mid seasonal updates/events. The only difference is the name of the game you're playing.
Me and my boi were legit talking about this yesterday. We actually find co-op looter shooters more intriguing than most competitive shooters these days. Tiny Tina's or even a game like Outriders that was trash at release but has had time to cook and since become a much better game just hit different than the options we have. It's depressing to say, but I think we are in a state where most multiplayer shooters need around a year after release before they are actually the game that was advertised to us (if they can even reach that bar at all). The obvious problem is by the time games are what they should be, people have forgotten about them and moved on to the next promising release that will disappoint us at launch lol
Just feels like i'm wasting time that can be used for Single player games because nothing is keeping my interest in coming back to play more. PS3/Xbox 360 era was a treasure trove of fun and addicting Multiplayer games that kept me coming back; I never felt like I was wasting my time. And god forbid we get ANOTHER Battle Royal game or Valorant/Overwatch/Paladins-esque game.
It really has, the devs and big corporations saw the dollars signs and just rode that BR train until the wheels fell off and because the younger gen pretty much dictates the market now were basically at their mercy.
I started my online game journey with shooter. COD specifically. I don’t think they peeked. I just feel every developer has shyed away from what made all there games great. Idk due to people leaving the developer team, they just want money, or they just out of ideas. But I feel it’s all on the developers
Back in the day they were better. Not that excited anymore for shooters like I use to. The only mp shooters that I’m looking forward to are factions 2 and deviation games upcoming shooter
Doom Eternal was the last fps game I had a great time playing It’s an arena shooter rather than an online multiplayer shooter but i haven’t had fun playing an online multiplayer fps since destiny 1 Destiny 2 was too much of a grind and felt more like a chore to keep up with new content That’s a major problem I find with live service games also Having to grind and get burnt out playing a game to stay caught up with new updates and content
I will admit, I have been enjoying Fortnite again now that they have the "No Build" mode in the game. Nobody's building my entire community college campus every time I shoot at them.
I feel that multiplayer games peak with that one game that came at the right time for you. For me, Black Ops 2 was the multiplaher game i put the most time in, and have the best memories with. Theres a lot of shooters i think are better thsn bo2, but they just dont hit the same for me.
Competitive gaming has ruined the FPS Genre. Game developers and companies cater to streamers and professional gamers for free advertising and marketing. Then the sheep see that and expect to be the next Ninja or Scump and for clout they start to cheat instead of becoming better at the game. Next think you know it's over run with cheaters and it's all down hill from there.
I’ve been feeling the same. Been multiplayer starved. I’ve even reinstalled halo infinite multiplayer so I can play season 2, but that’s only 2 maps so I’m likely to get bored after a week
I haven't played an online shooter since the original modern warfare days. Most people are tired of the same repeated formula these games follow. Maybe these failing games might make the publishers make real changes. We'll have to wait and see.
I think the classic shooter blueprint that we all know and love peaked during the 360/PS3 era, with TDM, DLC maps, etc. That being said I disagree that it's all about skins now. We are getting new content all the time for most of the F2P games. Since Apex launched, we've added 8 new characters, 3 new BR maps, a bunch of weapons, 1 new permanent game mode (with plans to add more LTMs in the future), and not to mention all of the meta changes, ALL FOR FREE. Apex at launch and Apex now are 2 completely different games. Sure we have to monetize players with skins, etc, but the pros outweigh the cons in my opinion. Everyone gets to play and in my opinion it's a good thing. We have players spending more now than they were with the standard $60 game and have constant free content every few weeks to keep them coming back. Maybe I'm biased, but most people don't really care for the standard TDM shooter like they did when we had nothing else to play
I don’t think they’ve necessarily peaked but the fact of the matter is people don’t want to accept ANY change in the genre. Boots on the ground warfare can only go so far
This is why i still stay playing factions from time to time. Factions 2 needs to come out but im slightly worried about it at the same time coz the times changed
The last COD I bought was COD Ghosts, the first COD on the "then new PS4". The online sucked so hard that me and my friend (at the time) rather played against bots than real people. I tried BlackOps 3 beta and after after that it was clear that the era of me playing FPS-games was over. Haven't played an online shooter since. To be honest, I don't miss that adrenaline rush that would mess up my sleep after playing 5 hours of COD in the evening. Getting too old for that sheit.
@@jshore9610 yeah they went too heavy with the jet packs and "vertical gameplay". All the games started to look like candyland instead of a warzone. A couple of years later they realized their mistake and went full marketing mode on the "boots on the ground" stuff.
@@juopotski i didn’t mind them tbh, thought it brought something new to the table and breathed fresh life into the series, i’m not big into cod like that anymore, ive checked out in recent years but the series will always have a soft spot in my heart

Shooters today just are not as fun. Every advantage is exploited to where games are only played one type of way. There wasn't a million people uploading videos about what is the gun with the fastest TTK, perks, loadouts, or whatever to use. Games used to have simple controls and have multiple viable options to play with. Everything feels like a money grab these days instead of just releasing a full, finshed game that got healthy updates, not updates as direct result of things being broken. Also I think the rise of competive gaming has ruined the fun factor as well. Grinding no longer feels fun and you either get in easy lobbies or you get throttled. I feel like there is no inbetween even in non-ranked modes. I don't know what will fix this problem, but I miss just hopping in a game with your squad and having a fun time.
That makes sense but I disagree. I hop into old CODs from time to time and dominate. Those games where designed so players could do that. Power positions, simple 3 lane maps, no SBMM, Real kill streaks, etc... Game developers don't want that anymore which ruins shooters for good players
I was playing bf4 yesterday, and I found a full server with nothing but dlc maps. Bf4, cod 2019, and Siege are the only mp games in the last 5or so years that I really enjoy, but they're all older. If nothing has come out since that meets those, or is better then that's a problem. The free to play, battle royale, loot box, and battle pass implementations really hurt mp games.
Apex and Valorant are the only shooters that feel like they have heart and genuine quality to me. Although I did recently get into Destiny 2 and it's pretty cool actually. And I love Siege but there's just so many issues with the game.
Been saying this shit for years! This free to play market is so bloated and boring. Just the same generic shooting with endless grinding to acquire the next bit of content on the battle pass. Battle passes have never excited me. What happened to just playing a game for fun and not “needing” to get that next skin. I miss old COD and games like uncharted 3 multiplayer.
A good shooter would be like a game like battlefield but eith powers like infamous so you could use like telacanisous and lift the ground up to make cover or break through walls with your mind or like shoot smoke from your hands to make a smoke bomb type thing I've been craving that superhero/fps game since 2010
The amount of unfinished games is a problem that seems to have no end insight. Gaming companies have extremely poor management from top to bottom and we the consumers are to blame partly. More money for them, should equal better content but we are here lol.
Title should have been have games peaked period, not just shooters. It's become like Hollywood movies, just by the numbers, we are not getting a GameCube,PS2, or Xbox era again.
Devs got lazy and stop taking risk in multiplayer, remember when TLOU launched & no one even knew that shit had a MP really until got some exposure lol (2013 era..lawwdd🔥) another examples are Uncharted 2/3 , Ghost Recon advanced war fighter 1&2, future soldier, Max Payne 3 (not necessarily good but decent) , GOW ascension , etc.
I no longer play any online multiplayer game. Anything that has a battle pass, "live service", microtransactions, fomo-tactic progression systems, etc is just done for me. There are so many older, amazing, well written, finely tuned games that I have yet to play and with mods it is really infinite amount of fun to be had.
Until we see a fully next generation MP FPS we cant say that. I think we will have some great MP games over the next couple of years. Arc raiders this year is gonna be great to name one
There is one big reason people don't put a thought into why multiplayer shooters are not that popular anymore when compared to the MW1, bad company 2, halo 3 days. The answer is you as a player have grown up, think about it we don't play with the toys we grew up with. Gamers from that era have simply grown out of their love for such shooters, plus as they grow older the reflexes required for twitch based shooters like COD are nowhere near their younger days.
I got a ps5 a few weeks ago and I'm taking advantage of the plus collection. Finished Resident Evil 7, also a good ways into Days Gone. Online aside from gta (which I only play when new dlcs come out with friends,) is dead for me.
Try Escape From Tarkov! I got into it about a year and a half ago & it’s been one the best FPS games i’ve ever played & I was giving up on FPSs before EFT. Destiny & Tark also have so much content/grind to keep you busy. Lmk if you want to try it out Jeremy 👍🏼
I feel like the 2000's were something different, everything felt more thought out, today well you have seasons, packs, special stuff, etc. When Destiny 2's Witch Queen came out I loved it months later i feel soo BURNED out can barely play for like an hour.
That was the sweet spot. When games were still affordable to be made and experimented with. Where as now it takes the budget of an Avengers movie to give us a decent game so DLC and half baked games have taken over.
I agree they've peaked BUT i don't think there wont be a renaissance, even though i don't care for shooters i love single player story driven games and horror games so i ain't phased about shooters the same way i ain't phased about the sports franchises being run down by EA and 2k. But i agree with some of the comments that noted that if the mainstream studios stop going for the easy cash grab releases and put in the work that some of the indie studios are putting in then there can be that renaissance but sadly that wont come until people stop throwing their money at these lazy battle royale's...and we know its gonna be a loooooooooong time before suckas stop sucking on the teat of battle royale's smh Keep up the great coverage!
The last online shooter I played was battlefield v. I lost interest in modern FPS games after that.I just stick to badcompany 1 and 2, plus battlefield 2016.
Idk but i just dont have the time anymore to play all the time so when i do hop on i get fucked up 😂 so now i just stick to single player where im safe
I've been playing Insurgency Sandstorm a lot and want to get Hell Let Loose soon. I'm done with arcade shooters like COD and Battlefield. I like more realistic shooters.
I literally only play single player games now. Last multiplayer I played was Apex and season 0 and 1 was when it was at it its peak. You play it now or the last few seasons and the third partying plus the ridiculous amount of abilities it's just boring and the skill gap is shit. Ps3 days was when multiplayer was at the top with the cod games, uncharted 2 and 3, TLOU even bioshock 2 multiplayer delivered some fun and an unique experience. Just so glad Sony makes banging single player games otherwise gaming would be completely dead to me
I forgot all about bf2042 I think the series is either dead is going on a break cause my god they drop the ball hard. I haven't enjoyed a mp shooter since bf1
The truth is there's not much more to be done with multi player shooters. It's a simple format, and I don't think anyone really wants to change it. I think all gamers really want is new interesting maps that don't suck. So yes, they have peaked, but they will remain popular.
I think Battle Royale games have ultimately done good for the world of gaming, but it has come at a cost. Companies have taken the Fortnite approach of ‘games as a service’ and have taken the wrong aspects on it. Delayed content, barebone releases, non optimized gameplay, glitchy launches because they can just patch it later, battle pass progression. Hell, the only multiplayer shooter I have played consistently since release is R6S, and that’s because I love the tactical elements of it even if I really wish it had more content. Games are in a weird place right now, and I think it’d be great how the success of single player games in the last 5 years (Jedi Fallen Order, Elden Ring, DMC V) will sorta tell other developers to step the fuck up or their audience will get bored and go play something else. BDobbinsFTW summed up the state of Multiplayer Shooters best in his Apex Legends video, where it comes down to it, modern shooters boil down to being “games we gotta play cuz we gotta play something, and it’s better this than nothing.”
I’m legit trash at online multi-player. Like if you put it down for a month it’s over. I suck at all shooters online. I enjoy co-op more now a days. I used to be online heavy in the 360 days. But now idk man
I'm just burnt outta shooters, looter shooters look the most appealing to me now, cause I'm not tryna play the same 3 BRs for 5 years and multi-player shit the bed
They peaked in the 360/PS3 era. It’s all downhill from there. Every multiplayer shooter franchise is a shadow of their earlier entries. GaaS/MT’s ruined the entire genre. Games release with no innovation, little to no content, and take 3+ years post launch to get what earlier games launched with.
Online hasn't been the same since PS3. I haven't played an online match in over 6 months. They need to just give me Battlefield 3 and COD MW2/BO2 remastered. I'm not a battle royale guy, I can't stand that crap. There all GARBAGE to me. No fun at all.
Shooters got a bad stigma early in the PS3 life when alot of random games had to have a online function to it that's gone now, remember Arkham origins multiplayer?? Lol.
Hope you guys are having a good weekend 🙂 Hope yall enjoy the video. Have online multiplayer shooters peaked?

A good shooter would be like a game like battlefield but eith powers like infamous so you could use like telacanisous and lift the ground up to make cover or break through walls with your mind or like shoot smoke from your hands to make a smoke bomb type thing I've been craving that superhero/fps game since 2010
mp shooters peaked with Titanfall and nobody can convince me otherwise
Don't worry. I got the cure in my head. I'ma start work on it very soon.
The amount of unfinished games is a problem that seems to have no end insight. Gaming companies have extremely poor management from top to bottom and we the consumers are to blame partly. More money for them, should equal better content but we are here lol.
Shooters will never again reach that level COD4 Modern Warfare hype. The PEAK ☝🏼of multiplayer FPS
The thing is, I completly agree with what you said in this Video Jeremy.
The question is, what do you expect?
I hope Deviation games and firewalks studio bring something good to the table 🤭
Deviation games for sure. They have veterans from every shooter franchise
Love the vids bro
I just want companies to compete again, not copy to ride a cash train.
I’m looking forward to Factions 2, Respawn’s Star Wars FPS, and deviation games mp. That’s pretty much it tho
That Star Wars FPS from respawn has potential
Until we see a fully next generation MP FPS we cant say that. I think we will have some great MP games over the next couple of years. Arc raiders this year is gonna be great to name one
I just want Factions 2 😭😭😭
There is one big reason people don't put a thought into why multiplayer shooters are not that popular anymore when compared to the MW1, bad company 2, halo 3 days. The answer is you as a player have grown up, think about it we don't play with the toys we grew up with. Gamers from that era have simply grown out of their love for such shooters, plus as they grow older the reflexes required for twitch based shooters like COD are nowhere near their younger days.
Great points and I agree with everything except you can still be good at shooters when you get older
I ain't never forgiving them for BF2042 dawg... BF4 is still the best BF ever
I just finished unlocking the bell toll visor I feel attacked. (jk first time playing in like a month)
Great vid I totally feel the points u makin
But i agree with some of the comments that noted that if the mainstream studios stop going for the easy cash grab releases and put in the work that some of the indie studios are putting in then there can be that renaissance but sadly that wont come until people stop throwing their money at these lazy battle royale's...and we know its gonna be a loooooooooong time before suckas stop sucking on the teat of battle royale's smh
Keep up the great coverage!
Read the title and thought out loud, "I think so fam"...
I imagine who you play with is also a factor in all this
Patiently waiting to see what MW 2022 brings. If it doesn't meet my expectations, I'm probably gonna put gaming on the backburner until GTA 6.
The last online shooter I played was battlefield v. I lost interest in modern FPS games after that.I just stick to badcompany 1 and 2, plus battlefield 2016.
Just waiting on Factions 2 at this point
Idk but i just dont have the time anymore to play all the time so when i do hop on i get fucked up 😂 so now i just stick to single player where im safe
Bro I'm playing battlefield 4 and holy fuck it's still so good
I've been playing Insurgency Sandstorm a lot and want to get Hell Let Loose soon. I'm done with arcade shooters like COD and Battlefield. I like more realistic shooters.
Been playing hella warzone lately it’s scary
Shooters are just the same "Always trying to get the best kills"
I literally only play single player games now. Last multiplayer I played was Apex and season 0 and 1 was when it was at it its peak. You play it now or the last few seasons and the third partying plus the ridiculous amount of abilities it's just boring and the skill gap is shit. Ps3 days was when multiplayer was at the top with the cod games, uncharted 2 and 3, TLOU even bioshock 2 multiplayer delivered some fun and an unique experience. Just so glad Sony makes banging single player games otherwise gaming would be completely dead to me
Great video, but we peaked 09-12 with online shooting games lol
I forgot all about bf2042 I think the series is either dead is going on a break cause my god they drop the ball hard. I haven't enjoyed a mp shooter since bf1
The truth is there's not much more to be done with multi player shooters. It's a simple format, and I don't think anyone really wants to change it. I think all gamers really want is new interesting maps that don't suck. So yes, they have peaked, but they will remain popular.
Does Factions 2 count as a "multiplayer shooter"? if it does then we still have something to look forward to. if not then.... shit
I say it does
I think Battle Royale games have ultimately done good for the world of gaming, but it has come at a cost.
But now idk man
Peak was at MW2 & COD WW2 (2008). Any other arguments will sound like reaching / shameless nonsense fanboying.
Battlefield 2042 is very good now. You should try it. I regularly go 40-5 since it has no SBMM like in cod
FPS shooter peaked A LONG TIME ago after MAG and Killzone 2 I haven’t been impressed by any shooters since then
I'm just burnt outta shooters, looter shooters look the most appealing to me now, cause I'm not tryna play the same 3 BRs for 5 years and multi-player shit the bed
They peaked in the 360/PS3 era. It’s all downhill from there. Every multiplayer shooter franchise is a shadow of their earlier entries. GaaS/MT’s ruined the entire genre. Games release with no innovation, little to no content, and take 3+ years post launch to get what earlier games launched with.
been peaked yrs ago i dont see any innovations happening...ever 😂😂
Yea we down bad with shooters!
I ain’t gone lie I just copped bf2042 and they did a good job fixing it up finally I think it’s a cop if you can get it for a lower price
You need an arena shooter that creates the new standard for shooters in general. I don't see it for the coming years
Factions 2???👀👀👀👀
Try insurgency tho best shooter rn
They peaked with Halo 2 lol
Online hasn't been the same since PS3. I haven't played an online match in over 6 months. They need to just give me Battlefield 3 and COD MW2/BO2 remastered. I'm not a battle royale guy, I can't stand that crap. There all GARBAGE to me. No fun at all.
Shooters got a bad stigma early in the PS3 life when alot of random games had to have a online function to it that's gone now, remember Arkham origins multiplayer?? Lol.
