Frank Lloyd Wright Inspired Sofa Table - Woodworking Projects - How To Woodworking
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 тра 2024
- This Frank Lloyd Wright inspired sofa table was made entirely from scrap wood I had laying around. However, one of those scraps was over eight feet long. So understandably, not everyone will have scraps like that. Either way, this was a fairly easy project that would only cost around $2-300 to make yourself. I hope you like it, let me know what you think!

Riggs looks like he'd be a great troll-hunting dog! I like the way the base came out on this table, perfect stability is over-rated. Furniture falling on kids builds character. When I was 5 we had a four drawer chest stacked on another four drawer chest. The pulls were perfect little climbing holds, so I thought. I ended up on the ground with one chest on top of me. The 80's were great, man.
That made me chuckle 😂
The fifties and early sixties were better, nobody gave a toss. Regards Jim
Damned millennials and their 'safe furniture' pbbbbt.
I, too, lived this adventure in 1985. Great year, man! Great decade.
In the 1700s we just went to war with France you kids :)
We kept finding we needed a folding table. This is so easy to store. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxStL0QRChBju4aQlnTrRgBZvafFog0KU3 Opening and closing is easy as well. It has a great handle for carrying around the house. Its pretty lightweight and slides around easy. We bought it for our daughter’s first sleepover. Breakfast was a blur - but 12 7-8 year olds fit at the table with room to spare. We used it at thanksgiving and 6 adults fit comfortably on each side plus 2 on either end for a total of 8. Super easy to clean up afterwards as well.
After watching the video advert i was still skeptical. But when i finally downloaded the plans ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxZF0EMnrujZvqHhGkxiz559uIABJWR9TG i was very impressed. The whole plan was just as you said in the video. Thank you very much. I now have a large and valuable collection for my woodworks. This is great!
Riggs, you make whatever you wanna make I just enjoy and learn from watching your videos. My father was a cabinet maker and a furniture maker and I enjoy a lot of the new stuff that you bring as he was old-school Carpenter. He died in 2002 so I just enjoy watching your show thank you, Ken.
Riggs is the perfect mascot for Blacktail Studio. Love seeing him anytime / anywhere. Loved the table and loved the base. Kudos to your wife's design input!
I think it would be interesting to see you do a project with only the simplest tools a weekender/beginner might have.
I like that idea
I'm actually in the middle of setting up my first "shop" (if I can even call it that) and I know very little but I love watching these videos for information and tips. A starter build video would be amazing
That would be great. Skill saw and a 1x4 with clamps for a track, pocket hole jig, minimal router bits. It takes a long time for the average guy to build a fully functional woodworking shop. Love the videos! Great content.
@@BlacktailStudio Id would really like this. I just bought my first home and got a shop starting in the garage. I don't have much, a miter saw and table saw!
Yes. I agree with that and like a small beginners projects to expand to intermediate to expert to master or what ever super power you are at now Love this show
Riggs. wife : "can you move that table an inch to the right?" , "best i can do is move the couch an inch to the left"
I read this early in the video, but I definitely didn’t get it until the end. Great joke! 😂
Wouldnt you just rip the tape off the floor if you bumped the table?
🧢🧢😹😹🤫🤫💸💸
OMG! Taping and Hot glueing the table to the floor. Love it!! I’m glad I started going back to watch your older videos.
Riggs - I'm watching this 3+ years later, but I love the color paired with the leather couch!
Riggs, after reading the troll comment, I wanted to say that I simply don’t understand his gripe; as someone who (very amateurishly) dabbles in woodworking, part of my enjoyment of your videos is hearing you narrate your process of building as well as your talking through your thought process when making these pieces. Love the content, man
Riggs, some low end projects once in a while would be great.
I’d like that
spkg, how "low end" can you get when you use leftovers?
@@dalepage5511 im thinking pinewood wonder xD
@@timothykarpov1432 Pine gets no love but I'd like to see something built from clear spruce. It's a beautiful wood, it's just tricky to work into anything other than a stud. It splinters and holds sap. It doesn't stain well, but why would you wanna stain a beautiful piece of clear anyway.
😂. For a minute there I thought that was Riggs talking: LOW-end…like dog height. 😂
Riggs is a beautiful dog. Your table is so beautiful especially the walnut legs. Who wants blah legs with a lovely tabletop? You did exactly the right thing for your new home.
I’m a senior lady…no woodworking skills at all. But your videos are captivating, and you make even ME dream of doing projects…not like yours, but something simple! Excellent workmanship.
Riggs, I myself would like to see projects that I call “Realistic “ meaning affordable and functional for the hobbyist woodworker who does projects for friends and family and not as a living source of income. I understand your livelihood is making and selling so I do not want or expect you to switch gears but maybe toss in projects every once in a while geared towards us. Thank you for what you do and create. I hope your shop helpers leg heals up real soon.
Thanks,
Mike
Ya, that’s fair!
@@BlacktailStudio You are above the You Tube DIy'ers. Don't change your skill level and cheapen your level of woodworking. 44 years ago I got hooked. You have my respect and admiration!
this isnt the right channel for that, check out "boyscout level woodworking" and it will help you do that "old pallet/cottage bookshelf" you have always dreamed of
Riggs called, he wants a walnut trimmed bed. Gobi-great!
Then you must mean my bed. It’s his favorite
Riggs. Love the table. Love the legs. I hope Riggs recovers soon.
Riggs,.........Kudos to your wife for a great design for the legs. Beautiful work, & love the grain on the legs as well as the top. No suggestions for future projects, at this time, so I will keep enjoying whatever is in the future! Again, as always great work!
thanks for the glue squeeze out tip with the tape, perfect timing for me!
Oh good!
Riggs looks like such a sweet boy. I hope his leg is better. The table is awesome!
Riggs, Frank Lloyd Wright is probably the most inspirational and also copied architect in the last 100 yrs, I'd be proud to have that table in my home. I'm sure Frank would be proud also
Riggs, please, please wear safety glasses when doing any cutting, routing, etc. Take it from one who could not see due to an eye disease, when vision comes back (cornea transplant) it is so good. If you would like I will send you a bunch as long as you always use them in your workshop. Great table, as with all your work it looks so good. Cheers
Agreed
Murtaugh - maybe it was design elements of the base, but this is one of my favorite projects I’ve seen you do. Not the most beautiful or elaborate, but aesthetically pleasing. Nice job.
Shout out to Murtaugh, love it.
Murtaugh must be the cat... lol. Great Work Cam!
Riggs is a beautiful dog, beautiful table too. 🇬🇧
Riggs seems to approve. Just love the look of that walnut!
I appreciate "out of the box" thinking in design. Riggs has good taste. If he is comfortable with the table, so am I.
Riggs, I'm not a woodworker type although I did take a woodshop class back in '59. I enjoy the time you take to explain what and why you're doing to keep others from these mistakes. You have a subscriber for life. Keep doing what you do, I truly enjoy this app!
Thanks, Rob.
Riggs is adorable. I love the edge that way. It makes it more interesting for me.
Riggs is adorable. Table is adorable too.
Riggs... love your work. Rough carpenter here in Sweden.
Riggs. I absolutely love the simple legs you made for this table. Just straight pieces with a small, lovely roundover on the edges. The simple shapes really allowed for one to focus on the stunning grain. Fantastic work, Cam.
Riggs,
We all screw up, hopefully, we learn from our errors. I prefer learning from others' errors, so please show them!!!! Unique base. Stylish.
Honoring the greatest architect in America with my favorite choice of wood. Kudos, good sir.
I really love the grain patterns of the wood and how well the finish really brought it out! The one idea I had about stability would be to route out a channel on the bottom for a metal counterweight so that it’s not so top heavy.
That’s the best looking free table I’ve ever seen.😳 I love the grain on it so much.🥰
Riggs struck a great pose by a great use of free left overs, nice job as always.
Riggs had the right idea 💡. He approved give the wife credit for the directions of the build. Thanks for your posting.
Do some things that NORMAL people can do, throw in a few insane projects every now and then, but everything i've seen you do are just great. Love your work
Rigg’s is such a great addition to the picture of this great table!!
You mentioned the genius of our lifetime ... Wright. You have my attention. I'm impressed
Your dogs name is Riggs! My dogs name is Freeda!!
I love your work and how you narrate videos. They are very inspiring and what I like about you is that even though you make high-end work, you’re still humble enough to ask for peoples advice and your willingness to hear suggestions, don’t worry, I don’t have any. Just here to admire your work.
Dude. Love the videos. You have commented that you have gotten criticism for your narration pace. Screw that. It’s perfect. Love the work you do and happy you are able to do it full time!!!
I'd like more projects that I could do at home. Squaring up a new house myself, and learning how to make things that could go into it would be awesome (furniture, tables, etc.). Great content and thanks! :D
Riggs: I know I'm a couple of years late with this, but I'm working my way through your back-catalogue! No questions, just a comment - love the table and I hope Riggs recovered well from his sore leg! He should feature in more of your videos!
My favorite woodworker doing a project inspired by my favorite architect?? Oh boy I'm in heaven
Riggs :) Honestly Cam, if you’re making it I will gladly watch. It’s all interesting and informative to me. Looking forward to seeing you organize and start working in the new shop as well. 🦆
Those are coming!
Riggs. If you haven’t done it already then I would love to see a video where you give some insight into the tools you use the most and what would be the must haves for starting as a complete novice
actually I thin he already mad that video
I REALLY like the videos, I am a new subscriber and will be sharing them with my brother. The walnut grain, texture and finish that you apply to it brings out the real beauty of the wood, you are so lucky to live in that part of the country ( sorry for political reasons) be safe, continue your great work. It will last for years!!🇺🇸
Riggs.. That grain and finish is just amazing!! Love it! And Riggs is cute too.. 😊
Riggs. My thinking on things to make is a mixture from everyday furniture but add a big table or desk once and awhile. I love the commentary you do. I'm 71 and learn something every video. Great job!!
I'd really like to see some projects that mediocre people(such as myself) can make in a small shop or garage setting.
I’m into that
kind of not what he does, lots of mediocre woodworking channels out there however...i watch this for excellence,perfection,awesomeness...not for blehhhh, mehhhh or whatever
Like all your work: Timeless and Classic.
Thanks!
Riggs, I really like that "RUBIO" product especially when you add more layers just certain finishes on cars, the more we perfect our skillsets, the better our products will always be Cam.
Riggs thinks that single leg looks cool but maybe a hazard in the making. Love your work!
As a guy who builds tables and custom furniture, I really enjoy your videos. Have you ever thought about doing a coffee table made of pallets and using epoxy? I'd be curious to see what you would come up with. I think it would be neat.
Riggs, great table! I would love to see a video comparing the finishes of rubio mono coat, osmo, and odies oil on wood from the same tree.
Good call!
Riggs is cute. Kudos to the wife on the design. I really like the lines, simple and it let's the wood speak for itself; I guess I would call it wood art. I can just imagine how your house is going to look furnished. Cheers,
Riggs…no question…I just enjoy your work!😊
Riggs, suggest a project for use outdoors. And how to protect it.
I’d like some outdoor projects
Riggs and I like this idea. I was going to suggest the same thing.
Would love that, I do a lot of outdoor projects, despite all my research, I am still uncertain of the best way to weatherproof them, keep in mind, that I live in South Africa and we don't have access to half the finishes that you have in the US.
RIGGS is adorable and makes a great addition to the photo shoot! Hope his leg is better soon. The table is gorgeous; I love the grain in the walnut and the deep rich color. And as far as suggestions for future projects...I will enjoy watching anything you make. Congratulations on the new house! Stay safe, stay well, and keep creating!
I’ll try not to let ya down!
@@BlacktailStudio I don't think that is even possible!
Riggs's speech bubble - The brain's eye is always drawn to the unusual and uneven as it tries to make sense of what it has captured. Together with aesthetics and pockets of interest, as my hooman parents are well aware, you have a winner! That's right!, I Riggs, am perfect! :)
Riggs is a smart dog! He knows a beautiful table when he sees one!
Riggs, smaller project is an appealing idea. Perhaps something with “butcher block”?
I’m into that
Agreed on the butcher block!
Another one for the butchers block!!
Riggs would say, “ when drilling in metal on your drill press try moving your clamp to the other side”. It should be better with the torque of the bit. It will push rather than pull. And or butt the piece against a stop or back rail and it should help from lifting or catching. Liked the table a lot and the base. 🤘👍🏻
Smart!
Always use leverage to keep your work from spinning on the drill press. It’s the first thing a machinist apprenticeship learns. And don’t grab the chips with your fingers use a pair of pliers.✌️
Riggs. I skipped to the end and watched the last minute of the video. Nice table!
Riggs is a handsome boy! I do like the idea of more "simplistic" projects, for the ol' garage-weekend-warrior! Thank you Cam!
Hey Cam - I picked up a cordless trim router about 6 months ago (Milwaukie M18 fuel) and I love it. It is not as powerful and the big plunge router, but it is very easy to use ... and the lack of a cord is (for me) a huge plus. Love your videos.
I don’t really do large projects just yet and my shop is small. So while i agree that a trim router is a handy tool for me, i actually like my rigid more than my m18. Some tools that get more continuous use really aren’t as good as their corded counterparts.
Riggs needs a Murtaugh!
Gorgeous grain on that table.
Question is how do you deal with smaller pieces that develop a twist, only after they have been custom cut and fit. I resorted gluing and screwing with the T10 finish screws and working it into submission. Working on a budget so dropping more money on extra walnut and hickory really isnt my best option.
He does need one! And not sure about that one
Riggs. Cam, that table looks incredible and fits well in your living room.
Riggs. I actually find your voice soothing and appreciate that you talk fairly fast. I don't watch videos where the person is a very slow-talker. I'm 67. No time to waste. ;-)
Well said marti!
murtaugh, I’d luv to see super high end furniture.
Riggs is an awesome addition to the table. I love the way you put it all together. The wood you chose is absolutely gorgeous. I am new to your channel so I haven’t looked into it just yet. Do you make outdoor furniture? Do you use joinery as much as fasteners? I love what I have seen so far.
Riggs…love the look of this piece, especially the base. Love watching the real “high end” furniture you create 👌
Riggs has great photo presence. I love this table. Lucky dog
Riggs - I think it would be cool to see your take on the everyday projects that most of us crank out this time of year. Cutting boards, coasters, beer totes, that sort of stuff. 🤷
I’d like that too!
Riggs says he’d like to see more of the charred wood projects and some “realistic” builds. Haha love the troll responses!
I’m in!
Riggs! I learn so much about tools, technique and wood from your videos. Thank you
Riggs …… so cute 🥰. Love this table I’d like to see both ends of the spectrum, large client pieces and ones made from bits of wood from your stash. You’ve given me a new level of appreciation for wood’s beauty when treated right. 🙏🏽
It’s beautiful. Also tell me why this won’t last forever? I would bet it does.
It might 😊
A giant, U shaped executive/computer desk with hidden cable management
Oh, very cool idea
That'd be awesome
Riggs *Chanting* "DO IT DO I DO IT DO IT"
Riggs and I wanna see that, too!
@@BlacktailStudio I attempted one a couple years ago less the cable management. I didn't give myself enough time to complete it, and then tax season started (am an accountant) and here we are two years later and it's still unfinished!
You might make mistakes but what matters is The amazing things you craft. I admire Your skills
Life long metal worker /toolmaker and cnc machinist here , really enjoying your videos
I want too see a table with a screen in it.
I’d be into that
Riggs is there to help, like any kid who gets in the way. I stepped on the cat so much, he likes it. Thanks for your video. I too am a fan of FLW and have duplicated his work for myself. The table looks very nice and I envy your skills. I am still a nubie when it comes to woodworking, so I learn a lot with the your videos. Please continue with new projects. I look forward to your next astonishments. Peter
Riggs, i love your dedication and how you finish your projects!
I'm saving up for my own machines.
Can't wait to start crafting!
Riggs. Love this simple but effective table. I’d like to see more of these simple projects, as much as I like your high-end commissions.
This wood working artist really Riggs up a beautiful table for his home. Love it!
I never expected that grain to pop like that.
I love the grain on the base. Just a beautiful table
Riggs: Love the table, great look, great walnut. Love your work.
Riggs is very cute, hope his leg healed up ok. I know it's been a while since you made this, but I just love watching you create beautiful things. I make small things like boxes and jewellery, but hoping one day to make something for our house. Thanks for doing what you do, and doing it so well. Keep safe and well.
Riggs fits right in with that beautiful table. I love your work.
Riggs, I just love seeing your deep finishes on your work.
Cracked me up too!
Living in a world where we all need protection from everything, including ourselves and when bad happens to you it's always somebody else's fault.
Great video as always.
Riggs, thank you so much for including your flubbs and faux paus and then your solutions! Such a help for me to know that, first of all, I am not the only one and secondly, there are ways out of my messes. 😉
Riggs is such a good doggie. That table was beautiful. I'd love to see a project like a desk with deep drawers and hidden compartments. Hidden compartments in furniture are just cool.
Riggs, just chillin' in the room when he discovers he's in the way. Enjoyed the video. Like the table. Thanks for sharing.
Riggs!
Hey Cam, love the 3 legs look. That Walnut grain pops so beautifully. I just finished a 3 legged surf board table with Port Orford Cedar leggs
Love the table, you do such good work. I know this is a year old but this is the first of your videos, I'm going to be watching more of them.
Riggs adds to the look of the table and sofa. The table behind the sofa looks great - the grain and live edges are excellent. The legs work really well in colour and the cantilever end is very stylish. I am retired and do very little woodwork but your channel is addictive. just the right balance between images/commentary and humour.
Riggs- Looks beautiful to me. Love the grain and finish, superb. I’m more of a wood butcher but love working with wood and creating cool things. Thanks. Andy UK
Dogs always boost likes!
Love the table. Love the base!
Riggs your owner really knows what he's doing ! Very nice
