  • Why I gave up what I thought was my dream job as a helicopter pilot to pursue my real dream of becoming a full-time woodworker and educator. This was not a decision I took lightly. I spent over $70,000 becoming a pilot. Then spent 10 years moving around the country to gain enough experience to finally become qualified to fly for an emergency air ambulance company in the Pacific Northwest. After all of this time and money, I decided to give it all up to be the owner of a one-man woodworking company.

I am also a pilot, flying Boeing 737s and doing some woodwork when a get a chance. Being a pilot is my dream job, I’ve been doing It for 20 years now, and recently I began thinking about starting something else for the day when I decide that I’ve flown enough. Congratulations on your move though at this point, it's been over ago. I quit my full-time job as a graphic designer at Dell Computer in 1998 to follow my passion as an artist. It was quite a leap of faith. It was a little bit of a struggle at first and fortunately I had a small amount of savings that helped during the first couple of years. But, eventually I got myself going and every year after (until COVID) was better than the last. In 2016 I bought some land in the Austin hill country overlooking the river and built my dream home and studio. Another leap but then it's all just a series of leaps of faith. And of course COVID immediately hit two months after I moved in. My business all but collapsed for the next 6 months. But I never lost faith. The PPP loans literally saved my life and kept me solvent until business begin trickling in, first slowly, the more and more until today, I'm booked for the rest of the year, credit cards paid off and savings rebuilding itself. You learn to live like this. The only difference between me 23 years ago when I quit my job and me today is that I live in my dream home and work in my dream studio. All this came from my art. It has been my source of joy and freedom, (and at times anxiety as well). BTW a body of work that I do involves woodworking and that's how I came across your channel. Love your vids and again, CONGRATULATIONS on your move brother. You go man!

Fellow Oregonian and helicopter pilot here. I, too, have transitioned from flying to becoming a maker. My focus is in welding (I'm currently using my GI Bill for welding school) but the plan is to start a furniture company with my soon-to-be wife. I really enjoyed this introduction video and many of your other videos. I wish you all the best in your endeavors and may God richly bless you, brother! You are an inspiration to me, and I'm sure, many others.

Bush Pilot. I'm 62 years old and closer to the end than the beginning of my life. I am recently on disability and found woodworking a place that calms me and I actually have an aptitude and passion for. Watching your video touched me greatly. You lived the life that I wish I had only in the Alaskan bush. The courage and fortitude you displayed in choosing to embark on a fulltime woodworking career is in a word incredible. This is the first time I have found your channel and you can count on me being a subscriber and if I can afford it, a Patreon subscriber as well. I wish you the best in all that you do. TJ Koker

Dream job: My shop teacher and friend quit his job to make slab furniture. That was 1976. As I recall he doubled his income the first year. We were exclusively using Myrtlewood. Mostly epoxy coated bit some filled with black and finished natural. He even did the kitchy tide pool scenes, but they sold too, and you go where the money is. Back then we were cutting slabs and coffee table bases along rivers and roadsides. He had the use of big driers at a local mill. All leveling was done with a router sled. Boy do I have some stories. Its why I became a shop teacher too.

You're an inspiration to me. My last day at a large tech company is next Friday. After 23+ years in corporate, I'm quitting to begin a 1-man woodworking business. Things are off to a good start but not gonna lie, the decision comes with stress about making ends meet. When I announced the decision, so many colleagues wanted to talk about the dreams they are not pursuing because the "safety" of corporate employment. I must make this a success. For me, my family, and others who need inspiring to follow their true path too. Thanks for being a torchbearer for so many.

I've got mad respect for how honest you are and not trying to fill people's heads with false hope of becoming a "UA-cam woodworking superstar" but still encouraging anyone to follow a dream responsibly. I myself am a chef. Have been for 20 some odd years. I started to dabble with woodworking to kill some spare time and after watching a good buddy of mine build some really neat stuff. I had decided to try my hand at making cutting boards (naturally) I had zero experience, tools, material, etc. Now I have a plethora of hand tools, power tools, jigs, possibly more than I'll ever need. I went from making a wobbly cutting board table for my mother, to now having a 7' live edge cedar slab sitting on top of a work bench that I put together. All in less than 3 years. I don't make any money off anything I build. I mainly give it to friends. But the satisfaction of completing a project is there. I couldn't quit my job to woodwork and survive. But thanks to videos like yours, when I do put stuff together, I have a lot of questions answered, and that I'm heading in the right direction when I start anything. For that I thank you

I've had several dream jobs including being a sailing instructor. I changed the industry because I only taught couples. Everyone (I.e. Male instructors) thought you can't teach husbands and wives together. I broke that barrier because I understood what women needed to learn. And wrote the. Now there are couples who teach couples sailing. I'm not much of a wood worker but I have a laser and just discovered my local shop that sells slabs, now my creative juices are flowing. I enjoyed watching your video.

I'm retired now, but my dream job was being a mental health crisis worker. During those years, I had a small woodworking shop in my double garage. I couldn't afford a lot of tools, but my wife's grandfather was a master cabinet maker from Scotland. I got all of his tools. Nothing electric in his collection. When I sold my last house and moved into an apartment, the wood shop couldn't come with me. Very interesting story. We were both very lucky, career wise, to be ably to make a decent living doing our dream jobs. As a kid I could not decide what I liked better, being a pilot or a locomotive engineer.
I grew up near an Air Force base in central Louisiana and was able to spend a good bit of time at the base. We had a mobil home park and most of our tenants were Air Force. One was a Tech Sergeant with a son my age. We became close friends and built U control model airplanes together. Going to the base was one of our favorite places to go fly our model airplanes. His father worked on the flight line and took us out to get a tour of my first real airplane. I was hooked on the planes and the Air Force.
My father was a third generation locomotive engineer. When I was around 10 years old I went with him to pick up his check at the yard office. One of the switch engine crews was at lunch in the yard office. With permission we got on their engine and dad showed me how to run it. I made several trips from one end of the yard to the other. Then when the crew went back to work we stayed on the engine while they switched out a couple cuts. Again I was hooked.
Fast forward about 10 years and I joined the Air Force. After 14 years of going to school I was tired of it. We wanted to get married and did a month before I left for the Air Force. I was very lucky and got the best job I could get for an enlisted guy. An aircraft mechanic / crew chief on C-130s. I used my GI Bill to get my commercial pilots license and the rest of my ratings. Later on I also got my mechanics license.
After I got out of the Air Force getting a flying job was not easy and was not enough for us to live on. I applied for a job as a fireman on the same railroad my father worked on and got hired. Being a vet was a great help. Eight months later I was an engineer. My off days was spent at the airports where I started doing freelance flying and mechanic work. I retired from the railroad and flying but still do consulting work in both fields.
And I give thanks to GOD for it.

I had built a solid body electric guitar when I was young and just getting started in woodworking. I built lots of furniture over the years while I did two old home restorations. I am a designer and programmer, always wanted to be a professional pilot. My friends who are professional pilots tell me they envy my job security and income. I just realize no one is actually happy where they are. after some time, you just need to do what pays the bills. If you can live with your job, so much the better. I do fly sailplanes as a hobby, to make my desk job bearable. Cheers

Love this video! I’m living my dream job I’ve worked for my whole life, my wife and I own a Skydiving business near SF. I’m a pilot and skydiver for over 20 years now but woodworking is my hobby. I just finished an outdoor redwood dining table and still wondering what finish to use, and suggestions? Thank you, keep living the dream

Your story is incredible, I don’t even know you and I’m proud of you. I use to climb and fix radio towers, was always on the road, away from the kids and wife. Ended up quitting to be home more, without a plan at all really, I just knew my heart wasn’t in my work anymore, it was at home. I started a contracting company and have been really successful, I just started making tables and dabbling in wood working, I’ve learned so much from your videos and experiences, thank you for sharing your story, and thank you for the lessons. Looking forward to the next one.

In spite of your lack of knowledge on many things, you went for it, and it is working out wonderfully. This is a real object lesson in going for your dreams (I never use that phrase), for anyone who really wants to pusue their love in life.

Hey! Thank you for this amazing video and your openness to the community. You're patience and effort in readings and trying to my comments are amazing. If you might remember, I had told you earlier that you might get to 1Million subscribers by the end of the year. I meant what I said and I wish it would come true. I subscribe to you channnel from my other Google accounts as well as from my parents, family and friends phone when I get a chance 🙈. I know I sound silly but I really want to see you take off and I am a student and I really don't know how else I can contribute and support your contents. Maybe one day, I can be a Patreon for your channel. Until then, all my friends are subscribing 🤣. Don't worry, they all love your videos especially the charred wood ones. All the best for your career.

Totally understand your comments about daydreaming the next woodworking project. Congrats on following your dreams. Appreciate you sharing your experiences and feelings on these important matters. Also, love the burned table. The creative spark is what drives me. It’s insatiable. I find satisfaction in giving stuff to family and friends. They seem to like that. Thanks again. I stumbled into your videos just today and I’m so amazed by your work! Very inspirational indeed! I’ve had this dream of having a little carpentry and black smith shop for many years now. But spending 18hours per day, 7 days per week on fighting to keep up with “every day life” (full time job, commuting, kids, bills and so on) doesn’t leave much room to even get started. But for sure, I need a change in my life! To cope with a dead end job doesn’t cut it for me any more! I have a need to create…or restore…To make…

UA-cam Maker/ Content Creator. Thank you for this wonderful video! I've been making videos for a little while now and they haven't performed nearly as well as I would have liked. They do ok, but it's hard to justify the time and money it takes to make each project and video for just ok. I've thought about maybe calling it quits, but your story really inspired me to keep going. Seeing your success gives me hope so thank you for that.

Thanks, Cam, for your courage and skills, both as a helicopter pilot and as a woodworker. I'm kinda on the other side of the coin; always loved woodworking (but not to the commercial level), but always wanted to be in the air. So I became a private pilot, retired from my programming job, and now do both! Please don't stop doing what you're doing, as you've obviously touched a nerve with many who love your skills and the ability to communicate them to others who love creating things out of wood.

    Packer, woodworking, retired!
I packed for ages, did a ton of stuff- firefighting, historical restoration, plowed snow, drove cat, turned wrench with my Dad, raised my girls- heck, it doesn't dent the surface. Did a lot of ops with PHI and LifeFlight in Lassen Park and on State SRA and USFS. Still chase fires. Woodwork is becoming more than something to do- part passion, part drive. Thank you for your video's, honesty and service! As a final aside, this is the first youtube I think I have ever subscribed to.

Cam, awesome story. Everyone needs to follow their dream and if the dream changes then follow the new dream. I had the US Army (and taxpayers) pay for my helicopter training, build time and enjoyed a 26 year career all the way to retirement. I am trying to rediscover myself and the woodworking you are presenting is very inspiring!! Thanks man!

It's amazing that you get so many negative responses, there will always have some. Once again why I enjoy watching you build is that not only are you a master woodworker but you do make mistakes and then you explain how you fixed them and why. You continue to encourage your followers how to overcome these issues and add tips that you have experienced. Thank you again for sharing your passion in the things that we all like to do.

Love your videos, Cam. I'm a cabinet/ furniture maker in Houston. Few things in life are as satisfying as creating beautiful furniture pieces from wood. It takes countless hours of tedious work that's anything but fun at times, but worth every second when you've finished and it turns out looking as beautiful as you had expected/hoped it would. Your tables are outstanding and it's fun to watch you create them. Talk as much as you want. it don't bother me!
