  • A young woman is assigned to teach school in a secluded valley whose inhabitants appear stern, secretive and anti-pleasure. Following two children who disappear to play in the woods, she finds that this is actually a community of extraterrestrials with mild paranormal powers who are attempting to repress and deny their heritage for fear of arousing prejudice and hatred in their human neighbors. Based on a series of novels by the late Zenna Henderson.

I grew up in Norway and was kind of the odd ball kid in lower secondary school, as I had interests and abilities that my classmates didn't. They played games and liked pop music, I talked about time travel and life on other worlds. I of course got picked on, ridiculed, for being different, and was for a time a loner, trying to make sense of it. Then I read "Pilgrimage" by Zenna Henderson (yes, it's been translated into many languages) and the book really resonated with me. I could relate to The People and even half convinced myself for a time that I must have been separated from such a group and that I would find them again some day. Over time, as life went on, I did reconnect with kindred spirits, a "people" - just not in Cougar Canyon. :) "Pilgrimage: the Book of the people" is in some ways a metaphor for life.

Oh how I miss those tv movies of the week in the 1970's. Thank you so much for sharing!! The 'old ones' now would call a good teacher like Kim Darby's character "woke" and corrupting the minds of their children. But for the folks who do dare to share... they bring light to the darkness and that's the only thing, for me, that makes life fun and fascinating!!

I would love to see Zenna Henderson's work revisited; I first encountered her work through this movie. The People stories were some of the best things I read as a young, SF-obsessed and voracious reader. How great it would be to get a reboot of this incredible series, although I will gladly rewatch this, it's held a special place in my mind all these years, I remember my mother was especially fond if it.

This story was in the September 1955 edition of "The Magazine of Fantasy And Science Fiction". I have a substantial collection of these pulp magazines and love to read them. I had no idea they had ever made a movie of this episode. I was in Air Force boot camp when it was released so I missed its airing. 44 years later, here I am. Good attempt on their part, but a little wooden for my viewing. They should make more Zenna Henderson stories into movies.

Now that I've watched it, I don't remember any of it, but I'm glad I had a chance to watch it. I've read _"Pilgrimage"_ and _"No Different Flesh"_ a number of times. I couldn't resist having a peak at a movie take on _The People_ . Instead of just "a peak" I sat and watched (and enjoyed) the whole film.
What an interesting way of interpreting the books. Many different story lines were put together to make up one cohesive movie. I usually complain about movie versions of books but this one really is just *based* on the book(s).

I saw this as a kid when it first came out and all i really remembered after all these years was (1) the thrill i got from seeing people fly like i did in dreams, (2) Diane Varsi - she had great presence. On 2nd viewing, it gets going painfully slowly but picks up just enough pace. Kim Darby's charming, plays coltish wary eagerness so well. Dan O'Herlihy sounds so richly Irish.

Tonight i laid in bed and searched "the People" and this movie came up so i watched it. I often dream i point my hands towards the ground and then lift off the ground. In my dreams I swim through the air like it's water, I do the breast stroke! It makes my stomach feel the same way it feels when I'm in a plane taking off or in the elevator. I think maybe it is not that people don't care about or want the power, I think that we all forgot or have been conditioned for generations that it is impossible. So the idea that we are so much more is too scary or silly to think about for some.

I was never a teacher but I was a youth group leader for many years. One of the most rewarding feelings is touching young lives in a positive way. No amount of money could ever be as great as this feeling,
Conversely, It is that much more painful when others suffer from your mistakes,
This TV movie brings that out so well. It could never be made today. Not enough explosions, action and sex. And no sugar coated romance.

Other books about the People came out as well, but as far as I know, they are no longer in print. I was surprised when the movie came out. It combined several of the stories to make this version. I really enjoyed this unusual film. I'm wondering who did the children's drawings. They were interesting. Thanks for uploading this sensitive movie. :-)

This was a great book series.... Sad the movie was badly done. This would make a great story to re-make.

A rather cultish cult movie--the bit with the 2 children 'lifting' in the woods was beautifully done

Great movie. Kim Darby was such a sweetheart & wonderful actress. I miss the 70's; people were so much kinder then; people today are mostly pathetic, greedy, vain cell phone addicts. Cell phones are ruining the social structure.

This was WAY before much later shows, such as "Area 51" and "The X Files".
I was a geeky 17 year old guy in high school back in 1972. I remember reading a story similar to this in English class. Back then, kids who were interested in sci-fi were considered "odd" at best, and bullied at worst. I remember another story we had to read "Report on the Barnhouse Effect" by Kurt Vonnegut. I remember the jocks laughing at it, calling it "weird". However, looking back on these Neanderthals, I realize now that---reading provocative sci-fi stories like this, actually SCARED them.

This was not based on the whole Zenna Henderson novel, "Pilgrimage: The Book of The People", but mainly on one chapter of the book entitled "Pottage". Bendo was a small town containing one of the lost groups of humanoid aliens who had crashed on Earth many decades ago. Melodye was human but already knew about the other more open established colony of the People known as "Cougar Canyon", but this adaptation does not mention the connection between the two groups which was forged by the accident. This made for TV movie isn't nearly as good as the novel, but it did get me interested enough to finally look up the "People" books and read them.

1sorryham Thank you for giving the whole title. Was going to ask somebody above when I came across your post. Books are usually better due to time and (I hate it) money constraints.

+Nick PRAKASH No, not really, as the two books are quite a bit different (and written at different times, as "Pilgrimage" was published in 1961, while "The Water is Wide" was published in 1972).

David Knisely Cool. I want to read them soon. I love this movie I watched it several times and feel a real connection with Kim's character. I guess I thought it did because both are about teachers who go to remote villages to teach isolated children.

I saw this when I was 7. I went to the library and found two short stories about the same characters. In one a couple finds a flying baby!
That same month, there was a movie with a guy hitch hiking and a farmer picks him up. Usual chitchat. They get out and guy looks up at the sky and sees two moons in the sky, instead of one. Farmer says, "So where you from, anyway?" Guy says"A little place called 'Earth'. Ever hear of it?" "Nope. Strange name for a place, though!" Anyone remember that one?

Yes, it is Kim Darby. I remember seeing this movie many years ago. And I have not seen it since til now. Thanks for posting it. Will have to see if you have another scary movie with her in it, about trolls in the fireplace in the basement I think.

It doesn't have quite a strong enough narrative, but it's still an enjoyable watch. Except for that last kid obviously strung up and hauled across a ravine by a cable, the wire work is pretty good too.

Strange but clever and probably very original back in the day.Has a sort of "innocent" Walt Disney vibe about it.Kim Darby Looks so beautiful, the best I've ever seen her.Makes me want to see again in other things such as the Episode of Riptide she starred in in the 80s.

I have to say - this movie in particular of other "sci-fi" movies is really quite special - I would like to see a remake of this to bring it up to date - It really speaks to the conflict we have between people and cultures who are different from "us" and how it is possible that we can enjoy those differences and appreciate other opinions - a lesson that we all need to learn now in these days of separatism...

I agree with so much of what you say, but am not convinced a remake could equal this 1972 production. It has to do with the Humanity this film (and others from that bygone era) conveys, in the best sense of the "H-word." There are oodles of remakes, remakes have become a staple of Hollywood. But remakes of great quality have been, in my opinion, a rarity, especially during the last 25 to 30 years.

A little gem of a movie. Too bad the studio doesn't digitally remaster the film; would make it so much nicer to watch. Wonder if movies like this were shot on film or video tape?

My guess is film. It apparently was played on a telecine film projector; I can see what looks like gate weave. It seems to be a fairly clean print, but every once in a while there's a frame with a flaw. A "film" looking flaw, not a tape dropout. My guess is this would make a great looking Bluray, if transferred with a film scanner.
