  • Although the actors and character names aren't the same, Sweet, Sweet Rachel was the pilot film for the TV series Sixth Sense. Alex Dreier plays a paranormal researcher whose patient (Stefanie Powers), suffers from disturbing ESP flashes. The source of these ghoulish images is a psychic murderer, who uses mind control to kill his female victims. When Sweet, Sweet Rachel became The Sixth Sense, Alex Dreier was replaced by a younger, handsomer Gary Collins. The TV movie aired as part of the ABC Movie of the Week on October 2, 1971.

      +DEAN MARTELL In 74, I was a snot nosed little bastard living in paradise, with good parents. And didn't even know it.
      Oh, how I longed to grow up ... little did I know that the world would turn to pure shit, & the weather would become fucked: little did I know that this was in the future ... waiting on me.
      Now All I long for is to go back. In a way, I think that I may deserve this fucked up world in 2018, for the way I misbehaved when I was a brat ... long ago & far away.

    Thank you so much for the back story! I remember this movie well, and loved The Sixth Sense. This was back when some serious thought was put into TV programming, not the cheap bottom-feeding ‘reality shows’ of today that require very little thought, effort or cost on the part of the networks.

    • @gomezk1493
      @gomezk1493 2 роки тому

      Actually this era had shows that qualified as cheap and tacky too. Every era that had tv does, you must be horrible at picking shows to watch lol nowadays there are literally millions and millions at your disposal a year so if you miss a good one or two it’s on you

    • @gomezk1493
      @gomezk1493 2 роки тому

      But I agree that the shows were better but it’s opinion based not fact based and I’m just not as big a fan of cgi and extreme gore as others. It’s easy to avoid but there are good shows out there that are recent you just have to know what you’re looking for.

    One of many gothic thrillers which were made for TV in the early seventies, perhaps hoping to cash in on the success of "Dark Shadows" and "Night Gallery". Other such television films were " The Eyes of Charles Sands" , "She Waits" and "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark". They were well made and, for TV at the time, quite frightening.

      The series that came from this, The Sixth Sense, was done first as its own series, then later added on to Night Gallery. I am guessing they figured they could sell it to advertisers better if they put in in with a well-known horror series.

    I was 10 when I first saw this movie. I didn't understand what was going on but I've remembered bits of SSR for all these years. I remember my father saying that this movie was to be really scary. For 1971 I suppose it was. Not scary now but an intriguing, well-done story. Interesting use of the doctor and Gary being on screen simultaneously because of a reflection in the window. Interesting too that the Pipers all wore the same kind of glasses. Thank you for letting me take a trip back to a childhood memory!

    I love the casting of this movie! Stephanie Powers was at her most beautiful and charming, and Louise Latham has always been the scariest person ever, even when she was doing comedy. I'm less than halfway into the show and I love everything about it, especially using unusual paranormal means to murder. It is good, despite its age, and as someone else said, superior to box office offerings.

    Terrific TV movie and pilot. Great visuals, such as the "ghost" of Louise Latham, the creepy ESP cards (eye, knife, raven, doll, coffin), and that terrific statue that comes to life at 46:48. Alex Drier was a excellent actor with a very good voice and lots of experience in broadcasting, who would have been great in the series.... maybe if "Cannon" had been a hit a season sooner, the network wouldn't have balked at having an overweight actor star in "The Sixth Sense". As it was, Drier did star again in another TVM pilot called "Murdock's Gang" -- but none of the networks picked up.
    The casting of Gary Collins did open the show up for more romance, of course. BTW, Stephanie Powers and Rod McCary (Paul) re-teamed during the regular series in the "If I Should Die Before I Wake" episode with Jane Wyman (broadcast Dec, 1972). The house used in the filming is the famous mansion "Villa Leon" in Pacific Palisades -- google it for more views!

    • @MKIVWWI
      @MKIVWWI 6 років тому +4

      BTW, that's Rod McCary as Rachel's husband (and statue come-to-life!). He and Stephanie Powers would be reunited again in 1973 for "The Sixth Sense" episode "If I Should Die Before I Wake" which co-starred Jane Wyman.

    Before the deplorable Disney administration took over in the mid 90s,the ABC network was
    still an impressive area of great programing,,and no where can that fact be made any clearer,
    by ABC's popular "Movie of the Week" series,which was launched in Fall 1969. in this pilot
    to the Universal Television series "THE SIXTH SENSE",it is very clear,that these TV movies
    were extremely successful in getting good TV shows on the air. and while "SWEET,SWEET
    RACHEL" didn't look like much,the TV series was!

    A terrific post, and a tough find! Thanks for letting me know.
    Alex Dreier would have made it a very different show, and I think he would have been just fine in his own way. But in the early 70s the chances of an older, ahem, larger man being the star of a weekly drama were pretty low (Cannon being the notable exception).

    Terrific television movie, better than much of the cinema fare these days. Unfortunately, much of the series that followed was not quite as well written. Some episodes were outstanding, but others fell flat.
    In hindsight, perhaps it would have been better if Dr. Rhodes had been presented as more of a skeptical investigator---not closed to the idea of ESP but not being credulous either. Then again, this was 1972 and everyone was buying into that stuff.

      +singersongster I'd recognize her anywhere. I grew up watching TV in the 60's and 70's....Louise Latham was born on September 23, 1922. According to IMDB, she has 109 acting credits, and was a staple on TV shows from 1961 to 2000 (her last acting credit). Almost 94 yrs old now. Name a TV show and she probably appeared on it at least once: Alfred Hitchcock, Perry Mason, Ben Casey, The Invaders, The Fugitive, Family Affair, Judd for the Defense, The FBI, Bonanza, Ironside, Longstreet, Cannon, Hawaii Five-O, The Streets of San Francisco, Heck Ramsey, Kojak, Columbo, Rhoda, Medical Center, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Waltons, Quincy, M.E., Eight is Enough, Family, Highway to Heaven, Hotel, Hunter, Murde,r She Wrote, ER, & The X-Files, to name a few (along with TV movie and theatrical film roles, she was stage actress prior to Hitchcock's "Marnie" role....she had a lot of parts, and one of the most recognizable actors from that TV era.

    Isn't that funny? The odd thing is...watching it now as an adult, it really isn't scary. But those words they kept on repeating....well they're still creepy as hell!

    The acting in this is phenomenal….. makes acting of this era seem rather lame and totally over acted … missing the good ole days 😮

    Who on earth thought it was a good idea to give Alex Dreier the lead role? Then to cast Pat Hingle who looks so much like him in another part. Really flawed casting. Enigmatic, charismatic young actor Chris Robinson (blind Carey) should have had the lead (and starred in the series).

    The guy at the beginning reminds me a little of a young John Cleese from the Python gang.

    Close your eyes, and 'Lucas' sounds strikingly similar to William Conrad!! Minimal acting in this"Precursor", Sixth Sense MUCH better!
