I have watched alot of repair videos over the years. I just wanted to stop in a say this John Talley with Partszilla is the best I have seen. Alot of detail and explanation. Hats of to Partszilla for videos like this.
This video is excellent. Watching your diagnostic process and evaluation of each part is extremely helpful. I learned a lot, thanks for the great video.
Hey John, great video. Quick question, you mentioned one size up for the new piston, I take it that is from boring/honing cylinder? If it is what size piston did you use or do you go to bigger rings?
Officially, you are supposed to use a dial gauge, mount it to the head and measure the side to side movement of the valve. The service manual will have the exact tolerance to measure, usually it's about .003 or 3/1000ths. A garage hack, if you don't want to do all that, is to put your finger on the bottom of the valve guide and pull the valve out. If it makes a popping sound, It's good. If not, either the guide or the valve needs replacing. It's not super technical, but it works.
So I cleaned the carb as you said, and I'm still having the same issue , I poured gas into the cylinder to see if it would start and it started a smile fire , I got it out within seconds didn't cause anymore issues but what could cause that, a friend had told me the guy I bought it from that the cam could be upside down he said his friend turned it 180 degrees but wasn't sure if it was supposed to be turned around could that cause the fire , I poured the gas in where the carb goes in
I have a 2003 400ex, on the top of the rocker case is about 7 bolts around it, the person before me stripped them, is there anywhere I can buy a rethreading kit with the bolts?
what is your opinion on high compresion namura pistons , specially the 86mm bore. im having some problems getting proper seal after hard riding. (nx400 falcon) basically same engine.
i have a 2008 trx 400 ex and I'm not getting fuel in the cylinder , the spark plug is bone dry , can you make a diagnostic on how to figure out why thats happening
I followed these steps, when I opened the cylinder head there was no decompression pin or spring.. should I be worried that the previous owner dropped it into the bottom end?
Used the old valves found out they where bad so gonna switch those out and hope it helps just wondering if I should pull it all back apart and check the rings or not
Not a relation to the top end but I am having a problem removing the flywheel. I have a 3 hook puller. I'm using the bolt that holds the flywheel on the crank. Just loosened it up and put the hook tool around the back of the flywheel and using the OEM bolt that holds the flywheel on so the crank isn't damaged by the Center of the tool. Some reason this will not come off. I'm taking you off because the one way bearing is a mess. Needs to be replaced but I can't get the flywheel off and I am using a half inch impact. I have so much pressure on it. I'm thinking it's a little bind it up in the back with the one way bearing but it shouldn't be this tight or this hard to come off. Any help or thoughts on this? Thank you in advance
do not just replace the ring without at least honing the cylinder. Boring is not always necessary, but if you do not at least hone it, and the cylinder is glazed, you wont get a good ring seal.
Hi Landon, Funny you'd ask... we're actually working on a Sportsman 550 top-end rebuild series right now. All four parts should be live next week. The procedure is a little different from Honda to Polaris. (Polaris marches to the beat of their own drum sometimes.
+Partzilla.com alright thanks. I took it apart and now Im trying to figure out the timing. I made the mistake of rushing marked it with a red marker and it rubbed off
After a rebuild, it's tough to just take a guess. Timing correct? Valves properly adjusted? You really have to just go back through it and make sure it was all done correctly.
Muchas gracias por la información! Tengo un motor de Honda NX400 Falcon en Argentina y es el mismo del TRX400 . Le voy a adaptar un turbo compresor con intercooler. Saludos desde el Atlántico Sur
+Partzilla.com oh okay makes sense ... phenomenal video by the way very useful .. also how much did the piston cost and how much to bore out the cylinder?
isaac littlejohn The cylinder bore cost me $45.00 Here are the piston and rings. www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/honda/HP-13102-KCY-670.html www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/honda/HP-13021-KCY-670.html Thanks for watching!

I watch all your videos that's how I'm learning my bike lol
Another great video. From this guy and partszilla
Great mechanic. Thanks for the videos!
Thanks for the videos!
I wonder if you can do a leak down test on these engines.
you sir are the man so when can i send you my engine lol
If we took in customer engines, we would need a new warehouse. :D Thanks for watching!
Hope you will replay
How to install crank for Honda trx 400ex
Same to this bike you're working in

if i got a 440 top end kit in my 400ex when it blows could i just put the same 440 top end kit in?
excellent videos! very professional. thank you!...one question. any official way of checking valve guides?

+Partzilla awesome thank you. !
Would this O ring cause the motor to blow oil out of the left header side on the gasket and bolt area ?
I'm a little late but what causes the Tick that 400exs are notorious for?
So I cleaned the carb as you said, and I'm still having the same issue , I poured gas into the cylinder to see if it would start and it started a smile fire , I got it out within seconds didn't cause anymore issues but what could cause that, a friend had told me the guy I bought it from that the cam could be upside down he said his friend turned it 180 degrees but wasn't sure if it was supposed to be turned around could that cause the fire , I poured the gas in where the carb goes in
I had the same problem, the cylinder was not getting fuel then I solved it by replacing the carb, adjusted it and it started right up

When cleaning the combustion chamber and the valves what type of wire brush should be used brass or steel? I would think brass or softer.
Brass is softer, just be careful not to score the components.
Partzilla thanks. I appreciate your videos
Where is the decompression spring? Never seen you remove it after the pin
what is your opinion on high compresion namura pistons , specially the 86mm bore. im having some problems getting proper seal after hard riding. (nx400 falcon) basically same engine.
I have a 01 400ex an when turning over gas comes out out the carb even tho it's in time not sure what it could be
i have a 2008 trx 400 ex and I'm not getting fuel in the cylinder , the spark plug is bone dry , can you make a diagnostic on how to figure out why thats happening
Sounds like the carb is stopped up. May need to be cleaned out. This will show show to do it. ua-cam.com/video/LrUYaWx_Kq4/v-deo.html
Can I use any type of feeler gauge to adjust my valves or do I need a specific one?
You want the sizes that fit spec of your vehicle.
Mine started smoking one day , realized my oil hose that goes on the head popped off ... one day to another it just stopped working
Love the vid's
Do these specs apply to my 2001 400ex
Compression pin spring? Not in video
I followed these steps, when I opened the cylinder head there was no decompression pin or spring.. should I be worried that the previous owner dropped it into the bottom end?
Have you run the motor already? If that was the case, I'm sure you'd know.
I did a rebuilt on my 400ex and it fired right up but it’s blowing out a lot of smoke out the exhaust?
Burning oil. Could be ring alignment or a bad ring seat.
Used the old valves found out they where bad so gonna switch those out and hope it helps just wondering if I should pull it all back apart and check the rings or not

It really shouldn't be that difficult. You can try heating it up or use a breaker bar instead of the impact.
Can't I just replace the piston rings? I don't know anything about boring the cylinder and or what a +1 piston is?
JAMESON.K.PRICE yes u can
Go4it

my 04 ex400 keeps clicking wen I hold the starter & won't start I need help
Where did you get the valve spring tool I want the same one
Mine's an older one. You can find them here. www.partzilla.com/search?q=valve+spring+compressor&x=0&y=0
U bored it because of the blemish on the cyclinder?
Would the same take down work on a Polaris sportsman 500 ho?

He forgot to grind the valves and re-torque the cylinder studs among many other things
couldn't you just replace the rings alone??
+isaac littlejohn Probably but I wanted to be sure.
