- Honda CRF450R Engine Rebuild: rmatvmc.link/c...
This is part one in our series where we go through a complete engine teardown and rebuild on a 2005 Honda CRF450R. The first part of this process starts with the disassembly of the top end, which is detailed here in this video. The steps shown here will be very similar for 2002-2008 Honda CRF450's. Stay tuned for this series to see the complete engine disassembly and rebuild process.

Good trick putting the piston in on the bench , never thought of that before . Just made my life easier lol.
I’ve alway done my cr250 like that…saves cuss words
Great job with the video. Time to dust off my 2006
I'm the owner of CRF450L but the video helped me a lot. Thank you
Howdy,this is a 3 year old Video,I just Bought a 2023 CRF 450R 50th anniversary,please upload any & all New vidoes of How To’s on My New Bike when you can,Thanks & I Love this Channel🦾🏁🔥
Thanks! Keeping the solo mechanic alive!
2 stroke for life! the time to take the head of the 4 stroke i have already changed my 2 stroke piston and installed the cylinder and i don't even want to talk about the 4 stroke costs!
Drink every time he says “Contact Cleaner”.
yess!!!
So glad I’m switching to two stroke
Fantastic job! Very well explained
Thank you for checking out our video!
After watching this i'm sticking with 2 strokes!!!
Wrapping a small piece of wet/dry paper or similar product around the dowels will prevent damage by the pliers and allow them to be removed quite successfully.
welditmick or get some rubber jaw pliers
Surprised he didnt do that, cuase no matter what if you dont it leaves scratches.
Let's get a TRX450R complete rebuild.
pretty clever with installing the piston in the cylinder before sliding the wrist pin into the piston. gonna start doing that
I did this a few months ago and it really helped.
Great job Charles. Very detailed. Thank you for sharing.
This is Friday entertainment for me. Love it. THX
Very well done video, but this is exactly why I like two strokes, and why 4 strokes have killed racing for family teams and local riders. Nice job.
I think I’m just gonna buy a 2 stroke and sell my crf after watching this video
Did you? Just coming across this shit myself
You'll be happier for it.
Thanks
Precise work, new parts. Greetings :).
Thank you😀
great guide. i just don't think i could do such delicate work. my heart rate was already rising as i was watching you do it what more if i do it myself. 😅
That is great detail
Next the crf 250r please👍🏻
Basically same thing
Probably the most popular 4 stroke engine.
P. T. Good motors but the titanium valves are brutal
Muito bom, depois quero fazer na minha!!! Crf450r 2008🇧🇷
I definitely would have left the rag in there and fully assembled the engine before I realized what I did.
nolan warner don’t worry. I left a rag down the intake hahah
@@DragonFury-gq5zo when I was younger I was helping my sisters boyfriend rebuild a Suzuki DRZ because it was burning oil and running horrible. When we were taking the bike apart there was something hanging out of the intake.. as we disassembled the engine there was a pair of woman’s tights/pantyhose or whatever they are called going through the air box into the intake tract and through one of the intake valves. It was being torn up in the cylinder and damaged a lot of parts. I was amazed that it ran with it like that but it was hilarious.
I think someone had used it for an air filter as there was no air filter.. or they were cleaning it and put it in the intake to block it off and forgot about it lol
@@Shoorit haha lucky that didn’t happen to my bike. The worst think that happened was that the throttle slide got jammed
I was just getting ready to buy a crf450… I think I’m just gonna stick with two strokes. This video crinkled my brain.
EVRY USED 4 STROKE ON CRAIGSLIST OR FB MARKET THAT NEEDS "CARB CLEANED " OR "RAN LAST FALL WHEN I PUT IT AWAY" LOL
Yes very good video quality, He should know what a telescoping guage is and to also measure ring end gap at half cylinder effective point & by all means a 45° crosshatch hone pattern? He and I aren't from the same school and I'm happy about that or he's either got to much Gasoline fumes in his environment ! Honda must sponsor these videos in order to sell newer model versions.
The expensive part is fixing the hard valve seats and valve guides money$$$
No offroad can beat the power of a four stroke
🙄☝️🤣
That’s weird looking valve guide you pulled out..
LOL
Amazing video
Glad you think so!
Also is a good ass video for the trx too
Where did the camchain go? =)
Watch dont let your cam chain wad up in bottom any movement and it will break lower cam chain slide holder casting off case dont ask me how i know
This is why you get a 2 stroke.
Trevor A true that just got done rebuilding mine nothing to it
4 strokes are easy, not sure why people complain.
Trevor A four strokes are more fun and have a lot more power and last longer for rebuilds
@@motobros-edits8954 haha what?? 4 strokes have alot more power then 2 strokes? 😂 what drugs are you on 😂😂
@@motobros-edits8954 maybe you should compare a cr250 bhp to a crf250.... the cr250 would smoke any 250F. Also the cr500 has more bhp then any 450f
What happens if the engine side timing mark lines up at the same time as the cam chain sprocket, but the transmission side doesn’t?
PUNT
I attempted to do the time to my wr450 and failed miserably, duel cams are so much harder, getting a Crf450r toomorow and this looks so much easier
How about a 2016 CRF450 next?
You had galling on the piston pin where the rod runs, but when disassembled you didnt check its condition or clearance ?????? May have needed a new rod ?
Oh and looking at your site the hone is silicone carbide LOL - Good bye Nikasil coating...
I beat this up with rmatvmc so many times, but they don't care. They want to sell parts.
QUICK PASS LIGHT STONES FINE GRADE WONT HURT IF ANYTHING IT WOULD HELP EXPOSE BAD NIK AREAS OR FLAKING WE HAVE DONE IT WITH NO ISSUES JUST DONT GO MENTAL ON IT
Can you guys make a how to rebiuld on a ltr450 quadracer 07 ....PLEASE!!!! 😫☺
“Re-use the new piston” haha
Now I know why it’s called a rebuild instead of buildover
My engine boils a lot and drains the water from the radiator very quickly. How can I solve my problem?
Crf450r 2010 ?
For pretty regular road riding how many hours/miles are you guys rebuilding your engines?
There are so many variables that come in to play when it comes to when your engine will need a rebuild. How often you change the oil, clean the air filter, where you ride and how you ride will have a major impact. It is not very common for people to ride these bikes on the road but you will likely be able to go quite a while if you aren't racing the bike or riding it hard. Many people can go 80-100+ hours before a rebuild. With that said, many manufacturers recommend a rebuild at 15 hours of hard racing use.
Where’d you put the drive chain after taking the cam out to before
What's the difference in crf and trx 450 motors
Great video but please spend the $5/10 and get yourself some good engine assembly lube ...
Cylinder head is no joke either
360 deg out ?
YEP TDC EX IS 360 OUT
Can one get in trouble when twisting the piston after you put it in the cylinder? What I mean is if the rings can get misaligned? Great video!
If you're really twisting the piston around in the cylinder a lot that could potentially happen but once you place the piston inside the only time the piston should be twisted is the small amount it takes to line up with connecting rod. So you shouldn't have to worry about that happening! Thank you for watching!
How much would dealer charge to do this job ?
Hola en parte mas alta de la tapa de balancines veo un tubito que creo que es el tubo de expansion.Bien mi moto expulsa aceite por ese tubo.Puedes decirme porque ocurre esto?
more crf450r 2017 onwards vids plz
Lol safety glasses😂😂😂
I have very little side to side movement in my connecting rod (crank shaft) but zero up and down. Is that normal or is it time to replace it?
Side movement is normal, up and down is a no no
@@oesamajeb3148 Alright, thanks man.
There is a spec for side to side movement
Very little is seemingly normal.
.06mm On each side allows for plenty of 10w/30 circulation, that by the way is in need of changing every four hours riding time. Oil viscosity gets beat down quickly and trashed up by clutch fibers and aluminum specs from clutch basket's. Oil setting up in an engine at 33° for 120 days gets thicker & sticks to inner engine casings. Needs warming up a few starts without riding, then changes while warm. That's on unused oil in colder climates and actually in some warm. I take it that all Commenting in this group have done a 30/40 & 50 year test on quart sized oil types & seen how much stats in the can or plastic type bottle's?
I would never use a pair of pliers to remove downpins
Hello , what is the size of the ball home did you used please 😁? Because in the internet there is many differents size ...Ho by the way ,very nice video !!!🤩🤩🤩 thank you so much !👍
Dont uss a ball hone on the nikasil cyl.scotch brite or diamond hone!
@@gregpaszt4671 WE HAVE USED A LIGHT BALL HONE ONE QUICK PASS DONT GO MENTAL
What did he call the telescoping guage? Snap Gauge? ☝️🤣⚠️☄💥
good infomation but watching this video is like going for your CDL
what "OIL" are you putting on everything?
What ring light would you leave on a Honda CRF 450R 2009?
Hello thank you movie but in Iran you can't find a cheap motor with no cheap import
man, i think I'll just get a cr250 two stroke
If I'm not confident enough to rebuild my own bike, where should I take it to be rebuilt?
Well, we can’t answer that for you. Take it to your local shop or something, do it on your own while watching videos, it will save you money unless you break something expensive but it will cost you more time.
Wherever you want to spend $4K
Great video! One question, how do you know what size piston to put in, before you take the top end apart? Did you know what you put previously or? I have a CRF 450R 2008 that will need a fresh piston and rings, but I do not know what size she has now and do not want to take it apart and then wait two weeks for parts? Thanks
Get an digital caliper so you can measure the right size :)
You need to take the top end off so you can see what size piston you have... never risk ordering the wrong piston. I nearly did this the other week on my cr250 and realised it had been bored out by 1.1mm... thank god I didn't order the standard size piston and I just took the time to measure the old piston
SOME PISTONS ARE MARKED .10 .20 .30 OVER ON THE TOP OF THE PISTON ITSELF.OR STD....SERVICE MANUAL TELLS YOU THE BORE SIZE AND THEN ADD FOR CLEARANCE PISTON TO CYL WALL......ALWAYS RUN A BALL HONE IN AND OUT OF BORE TO DE GLAZE THE CYL AND PUT FRESH CROSSHATCHING OR THE NEW RINGS WONT SEAT .....BREAK IN FAIL.....
Chain guide. Not valve guide.
LOL
So basically hes working towards a top end rebuild.
Ain't that the way it always goes?
@@bikenband I believe you missed the joke.
Sorry, I thought this was the video where he does a valve adjustment 😆
What kind of pison do u guys use
We used a Vertex piston on this rebuild.
How much different would this be to a 2010
A few things might look a little different, like the cam cap, but It's all close enough that you should be able to get the job done. Just make sure you use the torque specs and measurements listed for your year.
-Charles
Price pls????
No wrist pin bearings??
Nope. Most 4 strokes don’t have wrist pin bearings
I bought used 01 kx85 and it has bad low end before powerband . what can i look at to fix. Doesn't get good start off line .... Need help!
im not sure but this but happened to my cr 125 the top end might be about to blow
It needs a top and on it or the exhaust valve isnt working right
@@motomash6143 yeah exhaust valve stuck or something. Or if low compression rebuild time.
REEDS OR CARB DIRTY POOR ADJ OF CARB JETTING IS OFF ....COMPRESION TEST IS FIRST SHOULD BE 150PSI THEN DO A LEAKDOWN TEST ANYTHING OVER 4% IS GETTING TIRED WORN OUT.
hi, what size is the key to remove the spark plug?
I have no idea. I tried to pull the spark plug out of my 2020 crf250rx and I could not get any socket to fit it
@@aidanvelthuis1267 2009 to current uses a 14mm. 2008 and older is 16mm.
"what we'll do is"
Basically...but a great vid..
Is there a parts list with links??
Yes. In the description, just expand it and you'll see the links below.
@@rmatvmc
I did, all i see is the link for the shop, then links for watch next.
After this just links for social media.
@@davidmeade6356 First link... starts with "Shop Now"
Didn’t know you could be 360* off🤣
Crf 450 engine are the same than the trx 450 ??
I have oil in the cam shaft area. Will that keep it from starting?
pretty sure thats meant to be there
En español pues
Chase's bike?
Nope, this is the bike from our Roached 2 Racing series.
16:23 that's how my ex does it
too many parts in that dead frog!
I am getting tired just by watching.
Four stroke engines...meh! For mowing lawns; not racing motocross!
ok boomer
tyler jones 😂😂😂😂😂
2 strokes for weed wackers and mopeds 😝
HINT....... BADDEST HP KING MOTOR ON PLANET IS NOT A 2-STROKE........
This is why 4 strokes suck!
Honda doesn't recommend it....because Honda wanna sell more cylinders
Not enough detail at all.
What did we miss?
I’m kinda new to all of this is the top end rebuild parts called “high compression piston kits?? On the wrench rabbit website?
captain kirk the high compression piston gives you more power more torque and takes a little more effort to kick over, but not much more
