    Captain K and Finkel are gay lovers. Their costume at the end was a way of coming out "loud and proud". To finally show what they had been hiding, lest they be killed themselves. That's why they had pink triangles on their self-designed uniform. The Nazis forced gay people to wear these pink triangles on their KZ uniforms, just like they did with the Star of David for Jews.
    The movie implies that Rosie knew that Captain K was gay, and that Captain K knew that Elsa was hiding in the attic. Captain K and Finkel went to Rosie's house to bail Jojo out. That's why he was so out of breath and even carried Rosie's bike. He saw her being killed and rushed to save her child and her stowaway.

    My favorite part of the movie is how, over time, as Jojo becomes more and more disillusioned with his Nazi idealism, imaginary Hitler gradually becomes less and less fun and goofy, and more and more angry and irrational. Jojo gradually begins to see Hitler for who he really is; Not his best/imaginary friend, but a delusional, angry, hateful little man.

      Hitler was most certainly angry and hateful. But to dismiss him as a "delusional . . . little man" is dangerous. He was very intelligent and charismatic, and a skilled enough orator to take the desperation of a nation and turn it into murderous rage. Sure, I enjoy laughing at him in movies like this, but if he was truly a delusional little man, we never would have ended up with tens of millions dead in WWII. This sort of thing could absolutely happen again.

    • @tehdipstick
      @tehdipstick Місяць тому +2

      @@brianthom6798 I'm not dismissing him as anything. He was intelligent, yes, and he was charismatic, but he was also delusional, increasingly so towards the end of the war, which is when the movie takes place. He spent his last few days in the Führerbunker as a neurotic, drug-addled wreck, issuing futile, nonsensical Hail Mary counter-attack orders to army commanders who had either already been reported to have surrendered, or were completely surrounded.
      Hitler had been mentally unraveling for quite some time by the end of the war, the first big sign being his erratic behavior and inability to come to terms with Germany losing the fight at Stalingrad.

One day he looked me square in the eyes without a blink and said to me :"Those bastards stole my childhood..you understand..they stole my childhood!"..and that really stuck with me to this day because he knew what those monsters did to the people back then (especially children)..and they depict that very well in this movie where it all is done very well in a comedic way, but if you look behind the mask you realize what monsters they were

      @ravensdark9 My grandfather fought in Europe during WWII & one evening towards the end of the war he was on guard duty for his platoon & saw 2 German soldiers crawling towards their position. He shot both of them. One was kiIIed instantly but the other initially survived. Both were dragged into the camp where the platoon discovered they were both just boys - 13 or 14 years old. My grandfather sat with the boy he wounded as the boy died. He told me the boy cried for his mother.
      Those boys haunted him for the rest of his life. He knew he did what he had to in order to protect his men but that knowledge didn’t prevent him from the soul crushing regret. That & the rage he felt towards the German army for putting children in battle drove him to alcohol. He didn’t know about how the “knot-sea” regime brainwashed the German youth so he couldn’t comprehend why those boys were fighting at such a young age.
      The last thing he said to my father a few days before he died was he knew his life was nearly over & he dreaded meeting those boys on the other side & he could only pray that they & God would forgive him. He survived the war only for its effects to destroy his life.

  • @manon_0411
    @manon_0411 Місяць тому +132

    You might have guessed it, but the Gestapo was at their house because they had just hanged his mom and were looking for more information on the resistance. Also, shoutout to Captain K who was good from the beginning! He was sent to the training because he "messed up" in battle if I remember well, and he purposely did a shit job at teaching the kids, taking lots of time, wasting resources, etc. He's so disinterested in the training compared to the lady instructor, and during the book burning you see that he's sad/disappointed/upset.
    Then he just barges in right after the Gestapo shows up. He actually knew all along that Rosie was in the resistance (he probably was, too), maybe also knew that she was hiding a Jew, and when he saw her hanged in the city center, he knew the Gestapo would go to her house so he rushed there to help Jojo (which is why he's so out of breath when he arrives). He also knew Inge had died, it's hinted at several times. First, the interaction between him and the mom earlier in the movie hinted that they were relatively close friends, she wouldn't hit an officer she's not close with like that. So he'd likely know if his friend's daughter died, but that's the slightest clue. As soon as Elsa shows up as Inge, you can see Captain K is shocked/surprised, again because he knows Inge is dead, so he's probably like "that girl got BALLS". Whether he knew beforehand that Rosie was hiding a Jew is unclear, but at that point he knows. Which is why he kind of rushes towards her to "check" her papers, pretending to press her for them.
    He knows she's not Inge and that if anyone else checks the photo, they'll know. Obviously he helps her by saying the birth date is correct, and you see his "I"m f*cked, I'm going to die" face when the Gestapo guy says "wait" and approaches. You see Captain K lowering his head as he goes to hand him the papers, but luckily that's not what the guy was saying "wait" for. Again, this is treted like a passing detail but it's very important for his character. Another proof that he knew Inge was dead and that Elsa is a Jew is that he tells her "you should take a new photo, you look like a GHOST in this one".
    Then obviously he helps Jojo again at the end by taking off his jacket and saving him from the firing squad. Also, he is gay, along with his assistant, they're a couple! There are hints throughout the movie, like his assistant spoon feeding him when Rosie barges in and the way they talk to each other, but the real confirmation comes with their uniforms at the end. Both Captain K and his assistant are wearing pink inverted triangles on their uniforms, which were similar to the star of David being used to point out Jews, except the pink triangle was used for homosexuals. Makes even more sense why Captain K was purposely messing up the training, since homosexuals were on the same level as Jews in the eyes of the Nazis and would be killed if found out. I love this movie so much and Captain K deserves so much more love!

    • @trequor

      I don't think he was in the resistance. He seemed much more resigned to his fate than Rosie. I also love that Taika had the restraint to keep Captain K's sexuality in the background. I'm not sure 2024 Taika would have kept to this, but it is necessary since the film is told from Jojo's perspective. Captain K is the cool uncle character and it would be weird for Jojo to know about his sex life.

      Captain k and his lover also weren’t firing at the allies st the end. They just accepted the end of the war and their fate. All the couples who lost one another. Even so slightly for Edmund and his boyfriend, Edmund was apart of Ernst Rohm army. H even said.” I want Edmund and his partner k-lled.” During the night of the long knives. The two were found and taken outside and yeah.
      Gay men ‘liberated’ from the camps by the Americans also had no hope. Because they immediately were once again imprison due to homosexuality still be illegal. (American military did the same to their own gay soldiers)

    There was some brilliant foreshadowing about Rosie's fate when she tells Jojo that the people who were displayed in town square were doing what they could. Then later when Rosie was pretending to be Jojo's dad, "he" says, "Take care of my Rosie. She's doing what she can."
    I didn't catch that on my first watch through, and now that line gives me chills. No disrespect to Laura Dern, but ScarJo should've won best supporting actress for this role.

      I wondered if they caught that because they commented over "What they could" just a bit. I think it's the first sign we see in the movie that Rosie is resistance. What an amazing character - to be principled and part of the resistance, but having to allow your son to be indoctrinated into the cult for his own safety, and hers. Just the occasional subversive comment, trying to shift his views without coming right out and telling him the truth.

    A bit overlooked (I think) is Sam Rockwell's Character: Captain K is not a Nazi, he is gay and trapped in the circumstances. There are so many small details pointing it out, such as his reaction to the book burning, Jojo's questions about Jews at the Simming Pool, and how he rushed to Jojo's home when the Gestapo paid a visit.... And his shock/defeated look when he thought the Gestapo also wanted to see Inge's ID...
    This Movie is brilliant, and the Director purposely went against the usual brown/gray theme (clothing, houses) WW2 movies tend to display, as in reality things and fashion back then in Germany were quite colorful.
    Btw, Steve Merchant (Gestapo guy) took his inspiration for the role from the Gestapo Character in Indiana Jones Raiders of the lost Ark. 😊

The blue butterfly could represent the ending of "Nothing new on the western front" (1930) where the main protagonist follows a butterfly with his fingers and dies (here Jojo finding his mother dead). That wasn't actually in the novel All's Quiet on the Western Front, which simply ends saying the protagonist died on a day with so little fighting that the official report read "All's quiet on the Western Front". It was added to the movie because they couldn't come up with a death scene. The director and the screenwriter were driving a car in the rain and the wipers were making a squeaky sound, and the writer started saying, "der schmetterling, der schmetterling." Then they remembered the protagonist studied butterflies in school.

Even in the midst of all the darkness around her: war, the absence of her husband, the death of her daughter, the indoctrination of her son, the stress of hiding the enemy in her home, the worry of being caught, and even starving herself in order to feed the girl-- she used her dress to tell the world that she refused to give up on romance, joy, play, compassion, and hope.

There was no say a woman could have, they couldn’t refuse for their son to be taken, or tell their kid to not be like them, nothing. So many sleepless nights. So many tears. And their husband who is grown enough to know better, maybe he was a good man who didn’t want to join the military or maybe he did and agreed with ideology. What could a woman do back then? My great opa escaped being captured by russians cuz he heard their plan and they didn't think he spoke russian. He was a track athlete and jumped off the back of the truck and ran. He found womens clothes, dressed up and fled. These movies always hit me in my heart and i wonder how different things would have been if my great opa didnt escape, if my oma and opa didn't survive the war. I appreciate the humour in this movie because it makes the awful things easier to digest. My oma had a chocolate addiction, she and my opa would buy us chocolate a lot. I found out its cuz during the war she was a kid and was hiding, the US soldiers were doing rounds. A soldier offered her some chocolate. It was very rare to get chocolate and treats like that. Its almost like she honoured that soldiers kindness/service by eating chocolate for the rest of her life. Like now she could easily access chocolate now because of the people who fought in the war. Of course those soldiers fought for so much more, the chocolate is just a little symbol of that.

    A detail a lot of people don't notice is Captain K went to Jojo's house at the exact time the police were there. He knew Rosie got caught and he was trying to get to her house to get Jojo and Elsa out of there before the police arrived. Captain K was also gay. He had the marking the Germans used to mark people as gay on his fancy uniform. He was scared to stand up and when he saw Rosie there he knew he needed to stand up and help. He felt like it was his duty to help. He saw people give their lives for others and it made him realize he needed to do something. And in the end he gave his life to save Jojo and Elsa. He was a hero in the end. He was able to make a difference.

    It may be a satire of Nazi Germany but it is made with a lot of love and they know how to have respect for those relatives who had to suffer during those times. Even in dark times there is room for friendship, love and dancing with your special someone. The camera work, photography, the performances and soundtrack are amazing. 🐰

    When imaginary Hitler makes the comment about Jesse Owens it's very accurate. In 1936 when Hitler presided over the Berlin Olympics he and Goebbels of course put out propaganda about the "master race" was going to dominate the games. A young black man named Jesse Owens from the USA dominated the Olympics and humiliated Hitler and Goebbels. It's been documented that neither man ever got over that humiliation. If you have seen "Inglorious Basterds" there's a scene in which Goebbels is justifying their humiliation by an American black athlete. I love these little touches!

    • @voiceofraisin3778
      @voiceofraisin3778 Місяць тому +1

      Not even close. You have to remember that the NSDAP were putting on a show to entertain the world, Owens was part of the show.
      The Germans were the host nation, they won the most medals, they put themselves on the international map. Hitler was very satisfied with the whole event, they did dominate the games.
      The Jesse Owens story gets put around because Owens was the most famous black athlete present, Hitler did have a problem with with refusing to meet Cornelius Johnson because he wanted to meet othe German gold medalists not the American medallist, got told by the IOC it was meet everyone or no-one and got in a huff and said 'fair enough, nobody!' on the first day.
      That story got mixed up with Owens later when the civil rights movement tried to conflate anyone who promoted segregation with the Nazis, segregationists hated Owens, Hitler was a racist therefore southern racists were just like Hitler.
      Hitler quite like the entertainment Owens put on and met him privately later, shook his hand and then got on with his day. the meeting was independently witnessed by Eric Brown, hitlers photographer hoffman and Owens himself.
      You have to remember that American athletes were a passing fad, here for a month then gone, they werent on the parties priority list. Importing jazz and corrupting German youth, that was a problem, turning up to run a race then going home, not a problem.
      The Party was more concerned about jews and slavs, they had got all the jewish athletes banned from the American team,they didnt protest about black athletes replacing them.
      TL:DR The Jesse Owens story was invented by the American press for domestic politics.

    • @voiceofraisin3778
      @voiceofraisin3778 Місяць тому

      @@hellbunniez3 Yeah, he was annoyed because the rest of the athletes got invited to the white house, the black athletes didnt.
      You can't entirely trust what Owens said, he changed his story over the years as politics changed, he never got the financial rewards of being a top athlete so he tended to follow whatever popular story would put bread on the table. The 'snubbed by Hitler' story got him publicity and appearence fees so he gave in and used it but tended to be consistent in the story about meeting Hitler when he wasnt in the spotlight.
      On the other hand Eric Brown was rock solid on facts, if he said he saw something happen, it happened.

    Captain Klenzendorf is gay, this is why he protects JoJo in multiple circumstances. He is a gay man who ultimately gives up his own survival to protect a child, he sees the fall of Germany as his one only chance to express himself, which is why he dresses so "outrageously". Hiding one's ethnicity/nationality/sexuality was commonplace in Nazi Germany.

    Great reaction like always! Love this movie, the film is based on Leunens' 2004 novel Caging Skies, it's fair to say that Waititi took creative liberties when developing Jojo Rabbit. For instance, an imaginary Hitler does not make an appearance in the book. Waititi who ultimately went on to play Hitler, came up with the idea himself. Waititi said that he had no interest in accurately portraying Hitler, saying "Screw This Guy"
    One of my favourite scenes is when the Gestapo officers (led by Stephen Merchant) searching Jojo's home. However, the scene is also hilarious with the Gestapo doing little more than greeting one another with the "Heil Hitler" salute which is made 31 times in the scene. And in a interview Waititi told that he thought this would not only be a funny moment but also work to highlight how childish and silly the Nazi Party was. Seeing these grown men who claim to be members of a master race do their dumb greeting over and over just makes them look like a bunch of idiots.
    Along with being a movie about this period in time, Waititi also had a more intimate and personal influence on the film. He explained that the film is a love letter to single parents, like his own mother, who do all they can to protect their children. Keep up the good work.
