Taika Waititi did a fantastic job directing this and Scarlett Johansson was absolutely phenomenal! Also great job by Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson. Just a fantastic cast here. We were not ready for the emotional impact this movie has. It was really a nice surprise.
Jojo Rabbit follows a 10-year-old boy named Johannes Betzler, an idealistic yet misguided young boy during WWII. He lives with his mother, Rosie, and is often visited by an imaginary friend, you know who. While attending Youth Training Camp, Jojo is injured while mishandling a grenade. While recovering from his injuries, Jojo discovers that his mother has been secretly hiding a young girl named Elsa in their attic. Jojo is now stuck - revealing this hideaway to the authorities would get both he and his mother meeting Mr. mayhem. Instead, his plan is to learn as much as he can about her so he can provide this intel to his superiors. This plan backfires when his conversations reveal Elsa to be anything but the evil monster he assumed she was

Watching this movie was a rollercoaster of emotion. This movie won an Oscar, by the way. For the Best Director Taika Waititi. Maybe it's time to start reacting/watching awards movies now. Especially if you haven't seen many of them (you saw LOTR franchise). Your reaction just brilliant. Mason & Answer laughing, and Oak just being emotional made me verklempt.
You should react more to Awards films such as: The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather Trilogy, Rear Window, Parasite, Elvis, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Social Network, Pan's Labyrinth, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, etc
There was a drive done by a German lady, her grand dad and grandmother was in the Hitler youth.

Oak hit the nail on the head here! Im not sure if anyone has mentioned it but Taika Watiti himself justified casting himself as Hitler because he believed having himself as an ashkenazi jew play Hitler would be something Hitler would have despised. He mentioned he did little to no research on Hitler personally before hand because he didn’t want to give him the respect. Incredible film, thanks for the watch guys!
I feel like someone definitely did their research in the writing room though because hitler smoking cigarettes and eating meat always struck me as Jojo not knowing very much about the man he looked up to, since hitler was a vegetarian and detested smoking. Definitely can't argue with his logic though, if hitler were somehow able to watch this, he'd burst half the blood vessels in his head
Yeah, they definitely did that intentionally. Still, I think they mean more about looking at his actual mannerisms or anything.
He must have done a bit of research on Hitler because at least twice in the movie he absolutely nails the hand motions and gestures Hitler used during his speeches.
May U.S presidents be regarded with the same disdain in media depictions.
Have you seen SNL? They are. However, I do think it’s a bit hyperbolic to compare any of the US presidents to Adolf Hitler, with the possible exception of Andrew Jackson. Even then, he doesn’t quite compare to Hitler in terms of kill count.
Taika Waititi had a very, VERY fine line to walk in making this movie. And he did an amazing job. A masterpiece, in my opinion.

Scarlett Johansson deserved every bit of awards praise that she got for this movie. She was just fantastic.

btw, it's heavily implied that Theon Greyjoy and Sam Rockwell are in a homosexual relationship, making it very straightforward to understand why they weren't crazy about Nazi ideology either. Also, the two of them arrive out of breath carrying a bike while the Gestapo search the house, making me think they probably heard of Rosie's death and then sprinted right over to the house to protect or care for Jojo, probably hoping to get there before the Gestapo so they could destroy any evidence
My thoughts as well. There are so many little details to pick up. These characters had so much depth and died heroically.
It's actually blatantly stated at the end. Both are wearing pink triangles as part of their final uniform, which was the German symbol for a homosexual in pre-war Germany, just as Jews were required to wear a yellow triangle. Both were groups (as well as others) targeted as part of the "Final Solution."
It wasn't just implied. They literally almost kissed in one scene

I think that they were carrying Rosie's bike. So they may have either witnessed or saw her bike near where she hung,
So shocking right? It was so uncomfortable at first and then you see what they are actually trying to do and it’s so clever. I cried so hard. Amazing movie.
It's a weird one for sure. Like it takes about 15-20min to get into the movie, but i also wouldnt cut the first 15min. The movie is very well constructed, but it does take time for people to get into it.
My grandfather was in the hitler youth as a child and told me how they were brainwashed and how he, after the war was lost, slowly realised how everything he got taught was bullshit. He was always travelling making friends all over the world and celebrating that people who once would have been enemies could sit together and drink tea. This movie holds a specials place in my heart. To me it is one of the few perfect movies out there.
Same with my grandfather. He said meeting all the other kids in the "summer camps" and playing games has been alot of fun- only later he learned about the purpose of those "games". Later, as a teenager/young adult, he volunteered to join the army as a technician - to escape a possible forced recruitment (which did actually come shortly after). When the Allied Forces got closer to Germany he was still forced to fight. He described how they clashed with the Allied Forces during night in the Teuteburger Forest. He didn´t want to kill anyone but he was afraid to get shot by the officer behind them if he refused to fight - so he started shooting randomly into the darkness, without any targets, just to survive. Coincidentally his last brother, the others were all dead, was deployed to the exact same forest, without any of them being aware of being so close to each other. His brother got shot into the leg and was brought into a barn. It didn´t look good, so high command informed my grandpa so that he can say his goodbyes. When he arrived he checked his brother himself- it turned out that it was a throughshoot, but the medics messed up and only patched up one side. The mistake was fixed and his brother actually survived the war. After the war my grandpa became a doctor, with several years working overseas in a poor country.
About the holocaust - I believe - he said that he has never personally witnessed people being taken, but there has been rumours. Many didn´t believe the people taken were killed. The Nazis pushed, at least at the beginning, the propaganda that people in camps were treated "well" (if you can call forced labour that). Death-camps seemed way too unrealistic and many believed it to be propaganda from the enemies. You weren´t exactly able to go around and ask questions since that was dangerous. So it was a to-each-their-own- and don´t-ask-mentality. Only after the war he got the full picture of the holocaust.
The mentioned mentality kinda reminds me of what is going on in Russia and North Korea today. Even with the internet and all the information available it is still possible to brainwash people, create an image of enemies in their head and prevent them from doing anything against the regime (our votes won´t change anything, so why vote ? Speaking up or protesting is dangerous, so why do it ? etc)
It is sad. History can teach alot, but only if you are willing to learn from it.
The movie itself is amazing. It narrows down the situation and mentality perfectly- with some humour underlining how abstruse the ideas and ideology was.

Everyone today _knows_ that if something gives you no individual protection you have to socially attack, ostracize & pressure everyone to get it for group protection & that this makes Perfect Sense & we're not doing all this for the sake of Blind Following.
I think the Oak nailed it. The satire serves a purpose here - it highlights the ludicrosity of such beliefs and the idea of the Hitler Youth. It’s such a hard story to tell because the focus is (quite rightly) usually on Jewish victims, but the indoctrination of hitler youth was abominable and I think this was a good way to tell that story. It’s summed up for me in the war scene at the end - girls, boys with little to no training or understanding, elderly, ordinary citizens, the hints that the captain is gay and yet has to hide it and fight for a side against homosexuality - it’s very profound to me and that scene had me tears too. So glad you covered this!
The captain having to fight against his own interests is a great illustration how when those in decision-making power limit the options of the citizenry, the citizenry react accordingly. Like how people for individual freedom sit back & allow individual freedoms to be rescinded then call doing _that_ allowing people freedom of choice.
Now: go get your 'voluntary' jabs as ordered because even though making everyone get something that gives no individual protection makes zero sense, you don't want to be the Only One not blindly following do you?
& make sure to also give anyone who chooses to not blindly follow any protection & allow those who enforce such regulations to force them to. & of course don't forget to retain the belief that it's for the good of everyone, not just the illegal payoffs of those who get paid to enforce this.

Currently, everyone believes in what you're claiming I'm wrong about strictly due to politicians. Anyone who has studied virology knows better & in fact have banded together to try & stop the madness. So the two things are connected in the following ways:
1) It is all 100% because of the interests of small groups of people in decision-making power
2) Attempting to resist their indoctrination can lead to privileges being revoked
3) The General Populace supports those who spew the lies.

I have a good friend who literally has a PhD in virology. He regularly mocks people like you. You're an idiot and you're spreading dangerous misinformation. So the reason why Jojo says "Yorkie, you're still alive" every time he sees him is because Yorkie actually dies early on in the book. Also, in the book, Jojo's grenade injuries are much worse. He loses a hand. I think there is something so powerful in the fact that we never see the mom's face when Jojo finds her hanged.

It lulls you in with the humor, then the heartwarming growing relationship between the two, and his mom just being awesome, and then it hits you like a fucking brick to the head. The shoe scene wrecked me so hard man.
As a single boy raised by a single mom, ScarJo's performance kills me every time.

Oak looked shattered after JoJo's mom died.

One of my all time favorite movies- showing the war from a young boy's eyes, starting out very idealistic and naive and later awaking to the brutality and lies of his idols. Hence the shift from comedy to tragedy.
The moment when JoJo discovers his mother remains one of the most shocking cinematic reveals in any movie I've ever watched.

Fun fact: Hitler hated smoking and meat, so him offering cigarettes and eating the unicorn head was also a nice way of showing how wrong Jojo's impression of Hitler was.
I also liked how as Jojo's perception of Hitler changed so did Taika's performance. At the start he was extremely cartoonish and goofy, like a child's imaginary friend would be like, but by the end he's giving crazed speeches about racial purity, and even shows up at the end with a bullet wound on his head, pathetically begging Jojo to "heil" him one last time. It's an amazing metaphor for how Hitler is remembered today, and how misguided people can so easily latch on to his disgusting ideology.
I'm not sure how much of that is true and how much was Nazi propaganda. Hitler promoted an image of himself as a very clean-living, healthy person, but behind the scenes, he was much more of a mess. He apparently regularly injected himself with substances his personal doctor extracted from animal organs, specifically to test whether they would have any kind of "performance enhancing" effect that would make German soldiers more formidable. He also used a lot of what we now know are very harmful drugs, but what were then over-the-counter medicines. Obviously, he didn't know that the weird heroin and methamphetamine precursors he was taking were as serious as they were, but if you met someone today who was popping aspirin like they were smarties, you'd hardly describe them as living a healthy lifestyle.
The butterfly scene was such a sucker punch. I genuinely thought it was going to end in such a cliche way like the butterfly being ran other by a car. I first saw it in theaters and when you see the shoes, the theater when dead quiet and you even heard a few audible gasps. It was such a great film!
Oak, you hit the nail on the head. German propaganda was so absurd and outlandish that it worked as comedic effect in this film. I continue to be impressed by your observations and can feel your heart when a movie/tv touches you Ina deep way.
And yet, look at the ridiculous lies that get peddled in the media on the daily NOW, and you think "how can anyone believe this absurdist shit?!"... but, somehow...
I agree, I actually think most propaganda is like that from an outsider’s perspective. Doesn’t matter if it’s looking at the past or looking at propaganda from another culture. Because most of the time, it’s exaggerated and you only take it seriously/are in on it if you’re part of that community
The use of comedy to make the viewer drop their guard just to slap them with the horrible truth was absolutely brilliant! I’ve watched Jojo more than once and loved it each time!
This film is genius. Taiki is a genius. The balance between comedy & heartbreaking - that is so difficult. The shoe scene will stay with me forever.
*Taika. For the guys watching in the video it is pronounced Thai-kuh. You're right that both the film and Waititi are genius. The reveal in the "shoe" scene left me in silent tears as it broke my heart. The whole movie left an indelible mark.

What really hit me was when Captain K was dragged off after saving JoJo and that brutal machine gun fire was heard. JoJo turning in utter horror knowing what had just happened to his friend or surrogate dad. 😢
What’s amazing is the kid who played JoJo had never acted before. Remarkable
Both Jojo and Yorkie were played by first time actors, they have such a bright future ahead, we gotta look out for them!
Wow, Oak! You may not think you were being articulate, but that was an excellent and moving summation of this film. The big guy's got a big heart. 🙂 Way back in the 1980s I was helping out unloading shipments at a friends flower shop in L.A. It was a wholesale shop and all these buyers were showing up. I stepped out to puff a smoke and started talking with an old guy that was already out there. I noticed some crudely written numbers tattooed on his arm and had a bad feeling what they were. So I asked about it and he he verified my suspicions. All my problems were put into perspective. We talked briefly but I didn't ask anything personal, just told him I could not imagine going through what he survivied. Then I had to get back to work. I saw him again years later, but on film this time. He was one of the men that appeared at the end of Schindler's List, placing flowers on the grave of Oskar Schindler. It was a humbling experience.
You must have felt physically sick when you saw that. 😢 That’s how I felt the first time I saw old slave quarters still standing next to a big house and a cotton field. They still stand all over the South, but not being from there my head and stomach immediately began to hurt when I realized what I was looking at. I’m so happy this story has been told and that these guys have reviewed it.
i think what hurts the most to me about the shoe scene is earlier jojo’s mom was telling him how he needed to just be a kid and not be focused war and politics and there he was chasing a butterfly like kids do and it led him to his mom.
I was really surprised by this movie. To be honest, I haven't enjoyed a lot of movies in recent years, and I wasn't expecting anything different with this. But it ended up being one of my favourite movie in the last 10 years. The production, acting, cinematography, and the mix of drama and comedy, was exceptional.
I'm 37, I'm watching a LOT of movies, this is in my top 3. A masterpiece from Taika. I've seen this movie like 8 times, and I keep crying when he finds his mum. Powerful stuff.
That's Taika at his best, a great balance between comedy and drama.
The part about his mother broke me I cried and the shoe part if that didn't make you sad or cry you're not human!!
What a lot of people miss about this film is that the absolute silliness and joy and bright colors, and the adoration of Hitler at the beginning is because you’re seeing everything through the mind of a little boy raised inside propaganda. So the whole film reflects his understanding of the world. That’s why some people find it really offputting and really insensitive because it is in essence reflecting, someone who is childish, unaware and joyfully proud and ignorant of what’s going on. But as he starts to learn, and as he grows emotionally, the film becomes more real because he is understanding the way the world is. The color darkens and all of the joy is sucked out as he looses his innocence but also comes to understand what was happening and his role in it. It’s that moment that we all hit in childhood when we find out the world is a dark place, and have to keep going.

and then you thinkyou've had a bit of absurd "fun" for five minutes and then there's that very serious rabbit scene.
Take it from a german, the Hitler youth was (at least early on) a bit like a summer camp but without the fun and all the training and discipline so this scene? yup, very much accurate - and that's what I love about his films, you can go so quickly from "the fuck?" to laughing to silence to crying and laughing and then aaaall the way back to crying again. It's honestly an art

I'm sure other commenters have pointed it out but the pink triangle marked you as a homosexual, so when those two come out in their "War outfits" it's also them coming out as who they are. Always thought that was a nice touch. Man does that shoe scene just hit you like a truck. Taika Waititi does a great job of capturing the innocence of children without demeaning their intelligence or treating them like they are stupid. Jojo is not dumb, he displays signs of intelligence in the way that he observes the people around him and the way he tries to analyze, pick apart, and understand things that confuse him. However, his youth and innocence often prevents him from understanding the gravity of his situation. He is just trying to make sense of a world consumed by violence in the only way that a young child can.
But Waititi also captures the incredible strength and endurance of children that grow up in war; they are stronger than adults give them credit for. Jojo has learned to endure, and although he is hurting inside, he is not broken. Neither the war nor the Reich could take his spirit, which is what his mother had hoped for.
Taika decided that, as a Jew, playing Hitler would be the biggest insult to Hitler. Having the thing he hated the most, mock him.
This movie made me laugh and cry. It was beautifully done. So happy you guys watched this 💜

I find this to be an incredibly important movie, especially for young people, to watch in a world that is nowadays seeing an increase in antisemitic and fascistic propaganda being peddled more in the mainstream. Stories like this are important lessons that not only remind us why we can’t have something like this happen again, but also how we can help stop these things by extending empathy and giving humanity to others no matter the color of their skin, their sexuality, their gender identity, their religion, and so forth. Marginalization and discrimination are things that society unfortunately still teaches us in various explicit and implicit ways, they aren’t inherent things that naturally exist in us, but we are all susceptible to propaganda no matter the age, but just like Jojo, we too can unlearn harmful ideologies and do the right thing by recognizing common humanity in others. More connects us than divides us, we all just want to live a happy and safe life with the people we love.
Just to note something y’all might not have noticed, but the film also implies that Sam Rockwell’s character is gay and in love with his second in command (played by the actor who’s Theon from Game of Thrones). And thus his disillusionment with Hitler and the Nazis is also from the persecution of gay people during this time as well who were also sent to concentration camps.
Also I highly recommend checking out this video essay discussing Jojo Rabbit by Ladyknightthebrave, a wonderful Jewish UA-cam content creator, who really goes into analyzing the details of the film and the importance of Jewish character representation. I think you guys might learn a lot more of the context and perspective of the film.

I’m not entirely sure, but the flamboyant uniform Rockwell was designing for himself made me very sad because I assume he was trying to make himself a bigger target on the battlefield so he would more certainly get killed. I bet he had a lot of shame and survivor’s guilt for living and serving (and “passing”) under the regime.

@@abcdefgigklmnop5526 That's good, many schools don't really touch on ww2 too much anymore, I know many people who don't even know it happened or that it was the serious. I was like 10 when I saw the war footage in school, and it was in language class not even history. It was during the Anne Frank and historical books etc. It's important to know and remember , this all is happening again because people forgot/don't think it was real. No one wins in war.
@@lakotagrywlf He is my favourite character: a man in a no-win scenario. He is forced to command a defense with peasants and CHILDREN against the might of 3 superpowers. He knows that he will not get a happy ending.
But despite all this he is always friendly and caring towards Jojo.
Top of my list - one of the absolute best. My grandmother was in the resistance in Italy; she was put in a camp in Poland as a result. She survived but so many didn't. Laughter is a great healer, but we must never forget. Great reaction again, guys x
I remember when I watched it I felt like that was one of the best WW2 movies out there… it may not be a historical film reflecting a certain moment during the war, but it perfectly depicts what the conflict was really about. And to do it thought a kid’s gaze just adds to the emotion (like with the kid in the striped pijama). And I think making it a comedy is just what was needed to make it more unique and powerful.

New to the channel. I was watching Oak for the majority of the reaction, thinking he hated everything about this movie while everyone else laughed along. The end review was a such a twist and I agree completely. Great job, guys.
I didn't watch the reaction till the end but the dude on the left looked bored and didn't seem to find it funny. Thought maybe that's a side effect of roids.
I discovered them 2 days ago and have been on a binge since then, I would say the oak is often more restrained/muted in his reaction (facial expressions, laughing etc.) but always has some great insight and analysis! I think it's more a personality thing.

I was thinking exactly the same. He appeared so stiff throughout everyone else’s review but as soon as he started to talk you could tell he was holding his cards close to his chest because he totally GOT the film and did a phenomenal breakdown and analysis of why the film is phenomenally important.
@@cesarnarro6013 Having watched a few other emotional movie reactions of theirs, I immediately recognized how emotional he was and knew it was hitting him in a way that made it hard to laugh. I can understand though if you're unfamiliar why someone would assume these burly, broody-looking stoic-seeming men feel nothing. It's crazy how judging a book by it's cover can bias our perspective and it's great that guys like the oak exist to force us to challenge our own biased assumptions.
One thing that truly got me which I can't see people pointing out is the inspection scene when the Gestapo officials heils first Jojo then cpt. K and his "friend" (implied lover). I was laughing due to the absurdity of the scene and then Elsa comes in has to heil them as well and the comedy just went out of the window as a jewish girl had to salute Hitler

K an his - friend - was always kinda close 2 each other - like at the camp his - friend - take his cape an cheers capt. K in a high voice - an K is almost leaning on him at the pool scene - an when capt. K show his design 4 his flamboyant uniform - i think he was sympathetic 2 what jo-jo mom was doing cause he had - a boyfriend- that y he didnt say nothing when the girl got the birthday wrong cause his kind was persecuted 2 - an at the end of the movie when he was caught an telling jo-jo he was srry 4 what happen 2 Rosie cause she was a good person did u see capt. K had a pink triangle on the front of his uniform -

The emotions are supposed to hit you out of nowhere. Most of Taika's movies give you some sort of absurd comedy and then surprise you with a ton of heart
Humour is often a nice mechanism for examining difficult topics. It disarms the immediate defensive reaction in the viewer {"It's only a joke ... right?"). Plus there is the point that if you can laugh at something it's not as scary. And it brings stuff out into the daylight where it can be looked at. Not to mention making the bad guys look ridiculous without removing their very real threat. Such as the time spent saluting each other, which heightened the very real tension. [I thought Stephen was excellent as the Gestapo officer btw.]

@@BaddMedicine Yes, I love recommending this film. Trigger warning for some of the topics discussed. I have never been madder while watching a film. I am the type of person who HATES pausing films with a passion unless it's paused for an emergency or a bathroom break, of course, I don't get mad. But I had to pause this film so much it was making me ridiculously mad.
Also, I'm giving the trigger warning because one of the reactors I watched said no one gave her a trigger warning when recommending it and she wasn't in the right place mentally to watch the film. I felt bad watching her reaction because of how much it affected her since she wasn't able to mentally prepare herself beforehand. It had me bawling my eyes out, one of the saddest films and most anger-inducing films I've witnessed in quite some time.
Oak gave a very poignant and emotional reaction at the end there, I feel you. It’s a great movie about awful times through the eyes of a 10 year old
Not only was Captain K fed up but, throughout the movie, it strongly suggests that he was gay. He knew that he could have the same fate of so many others at the time. So he did what he could to help Jojo and Elsa out seeing them try to hide in plain sight like so to speak...
JoJo Rabbit was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar the year it came out and I also give it a 5. I’ve probably watched it 3 or 4 times and I still laugh and cry. Taika Waititi is a comedic genius, he’s the voice of IG11 in the Mandalorian and Korg in Thor, he directs Thor movies and helped create What We Do In The Shadows. His mother gave him the book he based this movie on when he was a kid and he figured out a way to put it on film. The satire of it is a thing of beauty.
This is the kid who played jojo’s first acting job. His name is Roman Griffin Davies. Great reaction! I went into this having not even seen the poster. I was taken to see it by my fairly conservative extended family and honestly thought WTAF?! Did they know what they were coming to see haha. Amazing movie.

My brother wanted to watch this movie and I sat down to watch it with him having no idea what it was even about. At first I was very skeptical about turning this theme into comedy, but by the end I could see the real purpose of it. Later on I learned that this is the kind of portrayal that nazis hate the most, when movies make them look silly and stupid, so that made me love the movie even more
what a braindead smoothbrained way too dumb down such an intricate and clever film. "Muuuuh nazis bad me happy" really?? is that all you took away from this movie?

I saw this movie with a Jewish friend. It was her idea and she loved it!
One thing that rarely gets mentioned is the opening credits with the song choice. The footage we see of real Germans fangirling over the Nazis, with a Beatles song playing, shows just how much of what happened relied on so many young people getting wrapped up in the hype created by the fascists. Young Germans were screaming and wailing for hurlers the same exact way Americans and Brit’s were fawning over boy bands.
The lesson isn’t, “be afraid of what the youth is excited about.” It is a warning about being excited about anything that exists to put you as an oppressor over anyone else.
Really great comments from Oak. My mother was born and raised in Nazi Germany. Her father was conscripted into the Wehrmacht and never came home. (In fact I had never even seen a picture of him until last year). My mother was from a Catholic family with a Jewish Name mother. Therefore, my mother had a Jewish name. (Catholics weren't highly regarded either). She was frequently bombed from her home, and spent a night in Feb 1944 as an eight-year-old crawling slowly from the rubble that was her apt bldg. There was a major Messerschmidt factory close by so her home was constantly targeted. And she had no choice but participate in the female version of the Hitler Youth.
She has always said the day the American tanks rolled into town was the happiest day of her life. So that scene at the end hits hard. The entire movie hits hard because she and JoJo were basically of the same age suffering similar experiences.
It's been said that the first country the Nazis invaded was really Germany. And I make no excuses for what they did. It's awful. The fact that T. Waititi could tell this story with satire, humor and pain is remarkable.
P.S. My father met my mother when he was stationed in Germany in the 50s as an Army officer. I also met my wife when I was stationed in Germany as an Army officer in the 90s. My wife is American but of Jewish heritage. By Jewish convention the children of a Jewish mother are also Jewish. Our 3 kids are raised to understand and appreciate all people and religions. As Rosie said, "We're doing what we can."
I teared up when I saw Oak tearing up.
In regards of locations, scenery and accurately looking set, the movie did an excellent job of that. The movie was shot in the Czech Republic (Central Europe, next to Germany) and it looks 100% the same as Germany looked like at the end of the war. That applies also to the interior locations, no visible errors or stuff that aren´t from this time era are there.
This is one movie that is teachable and opens up for discussions. Very impactful. Sometimes seeing something really drives you to understand what you've read.
I can’t get over the moment when he stabs her because of the grief of losing his mom. It was half-hearted but the pain and anger were real. And what does she do? Instead of retaliating she understands why he feels the way he does and she comforts him. Comforting someone who used to stand against everything she is. And that is what broke the spell, that so easily could have led to a fatal vendetta.
I really thinks this is the most important story of our current age. It is crucial that we understand how people fall into the grips of evil and how to pull them out.
I'm not easy to impress when come's to movies that are usually a parody or drama..but the mix of both with such hard topic as ww2 was. made this one very emotional for me & I love this movie & I love how Scarlett performed her role as the mother, she was more impactful in this role than any other performances of her with how she expressed love, compassion & all the teaching that she wanted her son to learn...fun fact this movie was Roman Griffin Davis's first movie acting ever, before that he was acting in his school's theater group
I know what I say about it... Best, most original, well acted movie I've watched in the last 10 years. Watched a Germen lady react to this and the way the Hilter youth was presented in the movie was very close to spot on according to the stories she had heard from her grandparents.

Hey guys, this is the first time I've seen one of your reactions. I am totally impressed. For most of the reaction, I was disappointed in The Oak, because he came across as someone who didn't like the movie. (This is one of my favorite movies of all time) When I listened to the Oak and saw his 5.0 score I was blown away. I'll have to start checking yous out more often. I don't know if you've ever seen Only The Brave with Josh Brolin. It's a great movie that most reactors overlook. Check it out.

The whole cast is incredibly good! The two kid where like 11 and 13 I think and acted so incredibly well. It was the first movie for both of them, insane. Scarlett was brilliant, but so were Sam Rockwell and Stephen Merchant and everyone else.
This is a sad movie with some funny moments, it's seems like a funny movie with sad moments in it, but it's not people only see it like that because they're adults, what you're seeing is through the scope of a child, so when you see it through the scope of a child of course it looks like a funny movie, but when you look at it like an adult and you know exactly what's going on it becomes a sad movie with some happy moments
I cried so much during this movie. Taika is such a genius.

This is definitely a 5 for me, it’s one of if not my favourite film. The ability to make you laugh and cry in the space of seconds multiple times is incredible.
You NEED to try 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople" also a Taika Waititi film. It has all the comedy and heartfelt fun this one has but less heavy on the heartstrings as far as subject matter goes.
5 out of 5 without hesitation! "JoJo Rabbit" is one of my all time favorite movies, but like you I went into it knowing nothing. Taika Waititi walked a narrow path on this movie where you could have that kind of humor, that amount of drama (those shoes!), and still keep the depth of the material and approach the message of how terrible the Nazi philosophy was from a whole new direction...that of a Nazi Youth learning the evil of the Nazi party. Such an amazing movie and presentation. As far as comedy combined with the darkest of materials...THAT is often the best way to deal with the most evil of people and times...you make fun of them. Mel Brooks has a great quote to that effect that I can't think of in full at the moment.
It starts funny because it genuinely makes you laugh, while also making you laugh from the discomfort. In the middle it lulls you into a sense of comfort, only to rip it from you, reminding you of the horrors and tragedies of that time. By the end, it finds a way to mix the humor, the discomfort, the seriousness and the reflection that comes with all that.
I do love coming out of a movie not sure how to feel, but appreciative of getting to experience it. It makes you laugh, it makes you think and feel; it's a unique balance. 4.5 / 5
Taika playing Hitler exoressively to take the piss out of him - *chef's kiss*
he did say they initially sent the script around to several A-list actors' agencies but then decided againtst it because it was about the story of the kids and having, quote "Will Smith play Hitler" (another gorgeous quip) would take away from it.
he also said he went on amazon to buy some books on hitler and then went "naaah, can't be arsed because I don't want to know about his motives or any of this shit, I don't want to give him any more validation, I just want to mock him" and I think he did that beautifully!
Hitler being a slightly camp, overgrown kid who has temper-tantrums, he'd roll in is grave, fucking here for it!

This movie is Satire at its best. Its crude about its subject matter just the right amount, while still having a great story about choices, family, and the affects of propaganda. The casting for everyone was perfect!

I’d also recommend Billy Elliot as another movie with a parent just trying to do right by with kid and having trouble understanding what that should be.

This movie blew me away. Funny, heartbreaking, with a commentary that's so timely.
I think that very best dramatic, tragic, sad, storytelling, can be found in comedy. Because comedy can lull you, disarm you, and when the real shit happens, it hits you harder.
i was actually at school with roman, and he was in the year under me. I left my primary school in 2019 but i remember he was a good actor then and normally got the leads so not surprised by his performance when i saw this in cinemas. His younger brothers were slightly irritating lol but i can tell they grew up when watching this. His mum was also the videographer for many of out leavers videos and seemed like a nice lady aswell

Gentleman...I truly appreciated this reaction...I've seen this movie several times and many, many reactions to it and The Oak's analysis is spot on. This movie is ridiculously good on so many levels. From the writing, the directing, produced and acted, it was excellence on all levels. And I still find more stuff in it to think about...
The oak! being as iconic as the tree he took his "nom de plume" from
another thing for accuracy: yes, the Nazis did indeed send literal kids JoJo's and Yoki's age to the front in the final days, as well as the old, the crippled, literally everyone. And no, it was definitely not a choice at that point.
my deceased grandad got "lucky", he "only" had to shovel trenches at the western front when he was 14 but he still never really talked about it.
In the bigger cities however, especially Berlin, they were all ordered, under threat of death, to basically die or die trying. With weapons, if there still were any, mostly there weren't any anymore, so the Nazis just used them as human shields
we, as a nation, done so incredibly fucked up. and we still study that part of our history for a long, long time in schools, which is good
actually, looking at the way the world iscurrently heading at, more needed than ever.

I watched this during the loneliest part of the pandemic when we were all expected to isolate, and that quote at the end brought me to tears.
Watching this I wasn't sure if The Oak enjoyed it at all, but then his response to it was so much like my own I was taken aback. I love Jojo Rabbit so much. It is a truly brilliant film. Finding humor in such horror and beauty in such ugliness. Taika Waititi has quickly become one of my favorite directors. I highly recommend What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt For The Wilderpeople.

I really am surprised to hear every time that people never've heard of this movie - and I didn't, too, until I stumbled upon the Oscar winners (it got Oscar for the best adapted screenplay and various other prices). Just like that you see how the marketing is working nowadays, hiding gems like these... Since Thor:Ragnarok and What we do in the shadows, I've been a big fan of Taika Waititi and this movie really is another one of his masterpieces. All the subtle hints, like the Captain and Finkel being in love, all the references and jokes, you get only by second time watching... great work!

Taika Watiti is also Jewish. His actual last name is cohen. His dad was Māori and his mom Jewish. I loved this movie. It used humor to draw you in bit also ridicule nazis. It made the actual film very powerful. There is a film called “life is beautiful” from the 1990s I think, that was similar in the blend of humor and drama (also made by a Jewish filmmaker)…I strongly recommend the original “life is beautiful “ with subtitles. I’d give jojo rabbit 4.5/5

So excited for this reaction! This is one of my favorite movies and Taika Waititi is one of my writing heroes. He did Thor Ragnorok as well. The kid who played JoJo was amazing and I think this was his first movie role. For the girl, she is in the movie Last Night in Soho which is another good movie. This movie did a phenomenal job straddling the fence between telling an emotional respectful story. I believe the view on the comedy side of this movie is by laughing at nazis, you take the power away from them. They never made fun of victims on this movie... they only made fun of nazis and their ideology. Great reaction, Gentlemen!
