I think it’s important to remember that this film is all through Jojo’s perspective. Of course he would look at his world and try to make sense of it through his imagination. All the silly quirks of the characters is because we are seeing through Jojo’s eyes. The first time he sees Elsa, she comes out of the trap door like a monster. The captain acts like a gunslinging cowboy. The gestapo have sickly sweet smiles. Even Jojo himself acts like the rabbit he thinks he is in many subtle ways. Critics can say what they want, but this film is beautiful. 🐇❤️
and add to this, his mother is nearly always pictured perfectly. Even if Jojo is arguing with her, or angry at her, she still looks perfect and beautiful.
I realized it when the explosion happaned at the beginning of the movie, for us it was a massive explosion the would definitely killed him, but he was left with only a few scars.

i love this. i saw it that its a child imagination (to make sense of the world) like you said. i love this. 😭😭
I think the reason this movie works wonders is that if Hitler had to see all of these holocaust movies, this one would probably hurt the most, because it shows people aren't scared of him anymore, he became the butt of the joke
Yeah, it's the method Mel Brooks used as well. Show them that they're a joke so they have no power.
I'm very glad Taika Waititi is continuing the practice.

I hope he does some more spooky things! The whole thing where he looks down on the dude is scary and funny!
@@gigi-riley COMPLETELY forgot that he played that role in Portal 2. Amazing actor!
Upon reaching the end, Taika does have a point though about comedy.. "People think that comedy is NOT an effective tool or is not to be taken SERIOUSLY in an ART form. It's one of the most POWERFUL tools that we have to fight against OPPRESSION, BIGOTRY, and INTOLERANCE. "To poke holes on" these people who promote HATE."
That is probably the BIGGEST takeaway of this "Break Down a Scene" and probably the BEST. Thanks Taika, Stephen, and Vanity Fair. ❤️
And then you make the jump to the truth. There are those who don't want comedy to be considered effective or taken seriously as an art form, because it has the power to poke holes in the those ideologies, and that is threatening to the powerful.
@@RaptorShadow YEAP! The TRUTH is the TRUTH... UNDERRATED as it is. Through all these perspectives though... one way or another, atleast there's some kind of HOPE that gives US all the insight of HOPE for the right/better thing to happen for is all. THAT I think is something that we can NEVER deny.

Germans actually greet every single person in a group separately, regardless how many. In eastern Germany one will actually go around to 10 people and shake all of their hands.
“Heil Hitler” was simply the accepted new greeting at the time, so this scene is actually culturally accurate.
*GERMAN*
In Denmark as well.
When you’re at a party, event, celebration, whatever, you go around to EVERYONE and shake everyone’s hand saying hello (hug to family members or close friends) and if you don’t know the person, instead of saying hello when shaking their hand, you just say your name.
Eastern Germany? How old is this comment, seems like 20 years not 2 weeks :'D Well, we don't greet unfamiliar people separately except someone else introduces them
