You are THE MOST down to earth person in the UA-cam Birb Community, AND in addition to that I really appreciate the fact that I can watch your channel with children and not have to pause your channel to avoid them hearing profanity!!!! It’s like a breath of fresh air and that’s why I have subscribed to your channel PLUS your channel has allowed me to improve my Pacific Parrotlets behavior! I love your videos as they are all three (3) informative, hilarious and appropriate for children!!!! You are the REAL star of the show!!!!

She USE to be cage aggressive and I worked WITH her to show that it's safe outside as well as inside, but I am learning about her behavior. so This helps alot. She will NOT let me touch her food or toys without blood spilled LOL. She is not fond of nutriberries or millet, but she loves her cuddles. you are so helpful. Now I know what to work on.

    My NINETEEN year old Quaker, who's been with me since he was a chick, just bit my top lip & DREW BLOOD. Of course it hurt PHYSICALLY, but it hurt my FEELINGS even more. He HAS bitten me before, but RARELY, and NEVER on my FACE! Ugh..SOOOO disheartening, bc he's been my BFF for such a long time. 😢
    ANYway...It made me feel a LOT better to see the clip with YOUR Quaker lunging at you when you were "touching everything" in his cage. At least I know I'm not alone! 😊

    I rescued a 15 month old male Eclectus yesterday. I brought him home, left his cage door opened in case, he wanted to venture out. I asked him to step up & he did. Then he started eating a carrot from my hand. I picked up the smaller pieces for him to take b/c I wanted to see how he would react & he took that little piece of carrot just as gently as can be. He's a very sweet, gentle & loving boy. He spent the evening on my shoulder & snuggled my neck all night till he fell asleep. I put him to bed & he immediately went to sleep. This am we ate breakfast together. I figured out that he is potty trained & he alerts me when he needs to go. He's such a great parrot. Now that I'm retired I have time for birds again. I've missed birds b/c of my prior occupation. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

    HELP! I have a 9 year old Cockatiel male. He has been in the family for around 7 years. Was not hand raised. We found him sat on a stand in a garden centre. He now lives with just me and has done for 4 years. I have always talked to him and he lives in the same room as me. However, he was never really tamed. From the day we got him, he was aggressive and goes mad with biting. I now have all the time in the world and am desperate to make his life as happy as I can. He has a mixed diet and is let out of his cage every day now. He will come out immediately but on his own and sit on top of the cage. I can feed him treats from my fingers most the time but even then he will occasionally go passed the treat to attack my fingers. He acts extremely aggressive when hands or even a hand held perch gets too close (hissing, lunging and frantic biting).
    It is all very confusing and a bit emotionally draining. I have been doing the usual taming techniques of sitting by his cage, talking to him, rewarding him for being calm ect. But he still has a very aggressive attitude. The minimum I want is to be able to have him step to my hands (or a perch) to move him from cage to stands if needed. Tried bribing him with treats but he still will not go near to stepping up onto anything. Been trying to calm and tame him for a month now with little to no success. I feel soooo guilty for the lack of free cage time over the years and want to fix it. He clearly has some form of a bond to me due because he will get as close as he can and calls out every time I leave the room. I can even hide my hands behind my back and he will hop on top of the cage door to 'kiss' my lips very gentle. But as soon as the hands return, boom...kill kill. Like I say, confusing and draining :) Been watching your vids and others to get some tips but just feel like I am making no progress.
    I still adore the little fella so he is with me for life, I would just rather not have another decade of bites :)
    What should I do? Do some birds just never get over the aggressive stage and are happy to simply do their own thing out the cage and be talked to?
    (Long post, sorry)

    Holding my quakers beak and mimicking a ‘bird bite’ when she is trying to bite instantly worked.
    I didn’t back down and lightly held her beak from the side and she gave up almost immediately. It can be hard not to pull away because they can nip you pretty badly when they want to. My hands are currently covered in bites but I’m feeling a lot more positive and reassured now.
    This really helped ✨💗

I didn’t know much about quakers before I got one and couldnt believe how naughty they could be after reading/researching. I think my pop-pop is one of the good ones from what I’ve heard, although she is still very young that might change. She loves to snuggle but sometimes she goes full bezerk-o skittish and will bite me for fun and think it’s a game and get excited when i get angry or I scream ouch… 😂

    Apple will occasionally do little nips at my fingers and say "naughty bird." It took me a while to figure out that he only does this when I'm messing with something else (like my phone or computer). He is telling me that I'M the naughty bird because he's bored and I'm not paying attention to him. To stop this, I either put down what I'm doing, or I put him back in his room until I'm available to play.

    So I started making Ollie our Green cheek let me or my son take him out of his cage. He now will wait on his perch, even when I open the cage and grab his food and such. He will wait until I put my arm or finger out to come out. This took a little bit for him to adjust but now he is getting the hang of it and I have noticed he is much better behaved. As far as biting goes, he only tries to bite when I try to get him to go back to his cage. Takes one kinda calm but stern “no biting” and he jumps right up with out a problem. Always love your videos, I learn so much from them. 😁

    Having this exact problem with our Quaker right now. He loves my husband but flies around trying to attack me. If I'm anywhere near he comes after me, beak wide open. It's getting where I'm attacked in every room. He will fly to find me. In the beginning I could be near him and he was fine but now not at all. He loves my husband and cuddles with him and everything. He was a rescue and latched on to my husband immediately. I would never think of rehoming him because my husband absolutely adores him so I just live with a crazy, manic bird chasing me with his beak wide open like a mouse to an eagle. Any suggestions from viewers would be appreciated. I just want to be able to coexist with Comet because I love him too!

    • @VictoriaRyann
      @VictoriaRyann  5 років тому +7

      Hey girl! Yeah definitely sounds like he's jealous and territorial over your man. What I recommend, is your husband brings Comet into a calmer room like the bedroom or something. You and Comet be in the room together and your husband leaves the room. Wear a jacket or something where the sleeves are thick enough and the bites won't hurt. You two spend as much time needed together until he calms down. You can even have your husband play and exercise with Comet right before all of this to get some of that energy out. While in the room, when Comet starts to bite, don't say anything and remain calm. Don't back down stand your ground. He will eventually get tired. Once he's calm, give him treats and praise him. Now, you may not be bffs after only one session of this. The goal for now is short around 10- 15 minute sessions of this everyday. You should start to see progress by the 3rd session. When you are finally able to pet him without issues, start slowly incorporating your husband. Maybe the first time, he only walks by and leaves. Then progressing with him eventually in the room with both of you. This may take some time depending on the severity of his jealousy and how well he takes this change. But the ultimate goal is teaching him that you are also an authority figure and he will not walk all over you, you two create a bond without your husband, and lastly all three of you are coexisting together as a flock. I hope this helps and hope others give their input as well! Good luck girly you can do it!

I live in Australia and have recently befriended a couple of lorikeets who sometimes bite (understandable as they are wild animals). Hi Victoria. About 2 months ago a girl down the street had a Monk/Quaker land on her shoulder in her back yard. She posted it on the neighborhood site. I sent her an Email & said I would take it if not claimed. Here in Austin Tx we have a big colony along the river that flows thru town. So I got it. It would talk & say breaker, breaker, breaker. All it knew. So I assume that maybe it belonged to a trucker & got out. He's turning into a hoot. He has learned all kinds of words & phrases in a very short time. He likes sitting on my shoulders. But is starting to get more friendly towards my hands & fingers. I showed him one of your videos earlier & he went crazy. Trying to cuddle up. I've had lotza birds over the years & I think he will be the best of all. Only problem so far is him plucking ay my hair & whiskers. He tries to eat & drink everything that I have out. I think he will chill more as he gets older. As I think he's a very young bird. He just molted which I think may have been his first. Who knows. BTW, I''m 70yo.

    When we first got our quaker turd he was extremely aggressive. He was teased all the time and hated hands and bare shoulders. He would fly to my shoulder when his flight feathers grew back. He would bite when he wanted to have some of my food so i would make him go back to his cage giving him nothing. He learned pretty quick that aggression gets him nowhere and he stopped biting me. He now puts his beak on me or gives me kisses which i reward. Ive since started doing the same thing when he gets impatient waiting for me to be done preparing my food. If he screaches in my ear or motorboats he doesn't get to sit on my shoulder and he gets no breakfast with me. He now will go back to his cage on his own when he is getting impatient so he can scream it out or will make kissing sounds on my shoulder. His cage aggression has gotten less over the years and i can adjust his toys but he still does act territorial. Ive started just simply touching his beak and making a kiss noise to try to get him to associate my hand in his cage as a non threatening thing. So far it hasn't worked to the point i want it to but at least he doesn't try to draw blood and will give a double chirp afterwards. He's an ass at times but i know he loves me.

  • @1whitemoon

    this explains a lot. I guess I was letting my female quacker act like the boss. she is not "hand raised" and was very timid at first. I assumed she's biting out of fear, and never punished her. now she bites randomly, and it's usually when she's on my head, above me. meanwhile, my nephew's quacker stopped biting, and all he had to do is not back down, and keep his hand in the cage.
    still, I don't feel comfortable to touch their cage, it feels like "their space", and their instincs tell them to defend it, they're not doing anything wrong. if I need to clean the cage or add something into it, I just move them to a different room for a bit.

    I had just gotten a baby Quaker that is certainly 3 1/2 weeks old, it’s name is Nova and the gender is unknown at this time. I didn’t blindly get a Quaker not knowing what I’m getting myself into but I’ve seen pros and cons on all species after doing my research and honestly think that it depends on the person. I’m hoping I can prevent these behaviors before they happen or at least be prepared for when they do and know how to handle the situations and correct them. Your videos are very helpful!

    I love it, birbzilla mode! This is a great video for many birds, not just quakers. One of the best advice I have heard is to redirect, or ask the bird a question, or que him that takes the attention from biting behavior. For my cockatiel, I will say peekaboo, or what's that? anyway, sharing this video with my favorite bird trainers. I enjoy your videos and different point of view. Maren and Captian Nemo cockatiel

    I have an almost year old Quaker named Theo. When I first got him, he was still pretty young but was the sweetest & most curious lil fluff ball that I would always have him with me. I was able to cuddle him & give him close lil scratches.
    But recently he’s been such a brat out of nowhere?? I’d hold on my finger and just pet him a bit and out of nowhere he bites. The first actual bad bite I got from him left me kinda fearful of him, cuz it hurt a lot?? And I’ve been trying to make him stop but he’s only gotten more aggressive, whenever someone besides me or my mom pass by his cage, he starts screaming like crazy. I try to offer him a snack, he wants to bite me instead, I try to help him get back to his cage cuz he fell, bites instead.
    I really do love the lil guy but how he throws himself to try n bite me has made me kinda scared :/

Especially when I go near our female quacker who's completely friendly. The male quacker is friendly with my sisters however the irony is, before he hit puberty, he was obsessed with me and my dad. He wasn't as attached to my sisters. Like he'd fly all across the house to come to me. Now he's displaying all this aggression and territory behavior, primarily towards me, a little but towards my dad. I don't if mby he's holding a grudge for going near the female quacker and giving her attention and food? But if that's the case, why is he fine with my sisters?

It was very frustrating but he’s never been territorial with his cage or his food. But I also clean it with him on my shoulder so he sees what I’m doing. He will often chirp to me while I wash his cage and toys off. He does get little fits of aggression but we are still working on it :)

    I was so excited yesterday when I watched this video and saw you mentioned my comment! I really respect the work you do with your two little guys, so it meant so much to me that you thought I was on the right track with my training ideas.
    I also have seen a lot of people recommend that you ignore bites and the bird will see it to be ineffective and stop doing it. When I tried this out, the result was lots of pea-sized bruises all over my hands and arms and my green cheek Pablo showing no inclination to get bored with the biting. It seemed counterintuitive that an animal whose survival in the wild depends entirely on being a member of a flock would go around being a total jerk to his human 'flockmate'. I realized that by my ignoring his biting, Pablo could have no idea that his behaviour was not ok. Physical punishment is always out of the question so I thought this was the best method to let him know I was not ok with being his human pincushion.

Then we are looked upon as not nice bird owners cause we stand up to them. But Judith you totally get it and so in tune with what your bird needs and the right approaches that works with your bird in stopping unwanted behavior. So thank you thank you for helping everyone!!!! Also thank you for the compliments I really appreciate it :) hope you and your little ornery Pablo have a great rest of the week!

He bite me, rips the phone out of my hand and goes psycho. If I don’t answer, then no problem. He’s now learned that Zoom is the same thing and behaves the same way. He will fly over and rip my headset off and bite me … but only if I answer. I can’t figure out what this is. He is a rescue and has other bizarre behavior. Hates hats and sunglasses … freaks out if he sees a box, etc.

    • @reneemills-mistretta790
      @reneemills-mistretta790 5 років тому +1

      Cockatoos are extremely territorial. Cockatoos are *HIGH MAINTENANCE*
      All birds are different so you never know, it's worth a try, slowly, very slowly, baby steps on the introduction. Your Green Cheeks wont have a chance if the Cockatoo decides he/she isn't going to compete *W/the annoying little green cheeks*, just my personal experience & opinion though. 😉

    • @VictoriaRyann
      @VictoriaRyann  5 років тому +3

      Hi Topher! I agree what Renee says. Definitely take it slow since cockatoo has the size advantage. But it can definitely be done. I'd take them both in a calm room with plenty of toys and treats. Let the cockatoo in first and wonder around. Slowly bring the gcc in and watch both behavior and get a feel for how things are going. I'd let the cockatoo keep doing his thing while you simply walk around with the gcc in the room keeping some distance. If everything is going good, the next session or two you can take the next step. Repeat the same process but this time, sit there with the gcc while the cockatoo plays. If all that is going good take the next step. Let the gcc play at the opposite end of a table. Watch your cockatoo and see what his behavior is telling you. Maybe let the gcc play for a couple minutes and take him out. Eventually getting to the point that they both can wonder around near each other without any issues. If at any time you don't feel comfortable or if your cockatoo is acting different in a negative way, take the gcc out of the room and either try again later or move back a step. Hope this helps ☺️

He has started just instantly biting me when I take him out if his cage, he hasn't broken skin but definitely left marks. His feathers get really fluffed up when he does this though. The first two days were the worst, he has calmed down a little bit but is still trying to bite alot. I have been trying the time out thing, were I put him on the cage or in the cage and ignore him for a few minutes, this was working with his little nips but isnt working with this more aggressive behavior. Any suggestions?

    • @VictoriaRyann
      @VictoriaRyann  5 років тому

      Hey girl. Is it possible for you to put the cage in a separate room and have a play area away from the cage? Does he ever act scared you think? Also, when you take him out of the cage and you notice he's getting into position to bite, try offering different perches or a covered arm. If you do offer your hand and he goes to bite, let him know what he did was wrong. You can say "no" very stern yet calm. If it's not out of fear, sounds like he needs some discipline. The whole ignoring thing takes care of the minor issues but yours sounds like he needs to be taught that he crossed the line. After you tell him no, keep working on getting him out don't back down. If he's really worked up, you can sit beside the cage while both of you take a break for 5 minutes or so. Then try again. Don't leave the room and don't give him treats yet. Once he wears himself out or if he's starting to back down you can praise him and offer treats. Reward his calm behavior while standing up to his bully like behavior. He needs to know you're not giving up, you're not backing down, and be a nice bird to get the treats. The same approach applies with your roommate. Tell your roommate not to be submissive and go into this with the mindset of behaviors you want from this bird. If there is hesitation and you are waiting for the bird to have the first reaction, he's going to bite and take control of the situation. I hope this makes sense and my apologies for the book I just wrote you lol you can do this and get it under control!!! ☺️

    Help Victoria, my conure named Monkey is 2 years old. He bites very hard everyone in my family but me. I am his main care giver. Monkey will bob up and down to get them to pet him and then after a few touchs, which he appears to like, he bites them hard, usually drawing blood. He never does this to me. It happens any time and in different areas of the house, so it's not territorial. It also happens throughout the year, so it's not hormonal. It happens when I am not nearby, so I don't think it's jealousy. What's going on and how do I get him to not bite everyone? I really need help as this is my first parrot and my family are saying he needs to go to a new home if he doesn't stop biting them.

    • @VictoriaRyann
      @VictoriaRyann  5 років тому +1

      Hey girl! That does not sound good!! I totally get where you are coming from and something has got to change. Sounds to me when I read this, your bird has a discipline issue. Do you do any form of discipline with Monkey? When he doesn't get his way or if he's had enough he goes to the extreme and lashes out on the people he knows won't do anything about it. Sounds like he's bonded to you and respects you enough not to do this. So what you've got to do, is have your family members and you, stand up to him. Teach him that he is not the boss and he is to respect members of the family. Have let's say fam member 1 wear a long sleeve shirt approach the bird in a smaller calm room. Have fam member 1 offer her arm to the bird for him to step on. If Monkey starts to bite, keep the arm there. Let him wear himself out on the covered arm while fam member 1 remains calm and doesn't back down. Once Monkey calms down and is in a calm submissive state, reward the behavior with his fav treats. Only when he is calm though. Any other time when he goes to bite, make a certain sound or phrase that will only be used to let him know you don't want that behavior. For example, if he bites you make a "shstt" sound or simply say "no" very stern but of course don't yell. Sounds like he's not a scared bird so he need to be confronted and told what he's doing is wrong. Take this way of thinking and fit it to work for you but the goal should ultimately be stand up to the bully, show him you're not affected by his outbursts, let him know you're not happy with him, reward the calm state. Keep me updated on how things go!

And I would raise my hand higher cause birds tend to climb up but he just chilled on my wrist (end of the sleeve) licking my hand 😛 I don’t know what to do to encourage him to step up to my hand and not lick and bite it

    • @VictoriaRyann
      @VictoriaRyann  5 років тому +1

      Lol with the hand licking! Very odd question I'm about to ask you but do you sweat, oily, or have almost a 'salty' taste to your skin? 😅 Which could be the case as to why your bird does this. My husband is this way and Yoshi will lick him nonstop 😂 as for the stepping up, do you offer your hand and wait for him to respond? Because you may need to instead of waiting or letting him decide, go in with the mindset that this bird is going to step up. Take your finger and without hesitation, move it right towards his feet. In a quick motion bring your finger towards the feet and actually touching them not giving him much time to think about it and decide. Do it quick enough where his brain doesn't have time to make the decision you make the decision first and quickly (obviously not knocking him over or scaring him lol) I hope that makes sense...

    Mine is 3 years old and recently started biting real hard for absolutely no reason at all. He used to bite occasionally when encountering something he doesn't like or is scared of. It was more like a snapping turtle kind of biting. Now he bites as if he actually wants to hurt me. The aggression that you talked about. He would bite real hard and hold on to my skin. Ends up bleeding most of the time. And I feel bad but I'm also a human and after numbers of biting and bleeding I started taking it personally. I tried water spraying, holding his beak, scaring him off only works temporarily. Hardest part is that I cant guess when he is going to bite. He would kiss me and be friendly and all in a sudden decides to bite.

    My quaker is about 10 years old now. He was so sweet as a baby, but as he's getting old he's getting more aggressive. Unfortunately I was unable to keep up with his training due to family issues as much as I wanted to. I play with him while he is inside the cage with some of his toys. I feed him treats with my hand. He's not a treat eater, give him veggies nope he's not a veggie eater either. So Im gonna try the holding the beak. Am I supposed to hold the upper and lower beaks. I want to bring him out of the cage without getting my hand all bitten up and you say Not to just let him to come out on his own. Any help appreciated Victoria!!

    My bird is a 2 year old quacker parrot. I am the only one he loves and lets me put is hand near is cage and get him from there. But my daughter or is very young ever since my parrot got nasty she tried to tame him but it didn’t work. I have found this channel and now tell my daughter to know this. She is still trying to tame him but he is getting better and better. He used to bite my son on the cheek whenever he was on his shoulder. How do I fix this? Because the bird has gone back to being mean and nasty and now I’m the only one who can get him out of the cage. Any tips?

    Hi. 🤗
    My quaker is young and likes to knit pick on my skin or anyone elses. That hurts because he does it with the tip of his beak. How can I break him from that? He is not an angry bird though, maybe he just has a chewing need? lol

    I have a Quaker and he's very young he's 2 months old and he likes to chew on EVERYTHING from my phone to pulling ear buds out of my ears and yes he bites me fingers and ears ALL THE TIME. It's not aggression, nor is it territorial or fear. He's just playing but it HURTS. How do I address this???

    I miss you Victoria Ryan! I hope you are well. No recent posts from you. Let us know how you are doing.
    I have a updat, I bought 10 acres of land w/a nice home on it and a 4 year old single wide mobile home that I am now renting out to offset costs. My Eclectus boy that I renamed Saint is doing so great. We have such a strong bond. Being bonded to a bird or any animal is the most beautiful and loving relationship that there is. Animals are honest, if you pay close attention and learn their behavior of actions and reactions, you will be able to read them and know what they are trying to communicate to you. I have 20 chickens, a large raised bed garden so I grow every vegetable and every fruit that Saint eats and it's totally organic. I use vinegar and grow fennel and allow the blooms along w/the vinegar to keep the pests away. I compost everything and use rain barrels to automatically water everything and everyone. I also have 4 wells of pristine underground spring water. I'm currently looking for a wife for Saint, he would make a great daddy and husband. I only rehome and rescue. I'm very blessed to have my dreams happen and we are flourishing. I know we are in tough and unknown time's, don't give up people, don't give up. Much love to you Victoria and to everyone. 💘

    Yes, when we mimic lot of naturality to the extent possible, putting up their level of fight is also an important part!
    Having said that, we should choose the battles and at the end of the day love factor should triumph everything 😅

    Hi! Thanks for the help👍I have a blue quaker named Ava and she is a sweety but she does nip quite a bit. She is 4 months old for context. She sits on my shoulder or my arm/hand and she'll be "preening me" when she finds a scar or scab or pimple, something like that, and she grabs a hold and tries to pull it off. She will also bite my fingers sometimes but thats because she gets mad at me for not letting her bite my face, arm, or neck. What kind of bite would you consider that? What method should I use in that situation?

    I have 2 Quaker birds (one green and one blue) and they both bite me hard. They are very territorial but the blue one doesn’t mind me as much. It still hurts a lot and today, after my birds gave me a bandage bite, I was looking for something to help me out. When I saw this, of course I was skeptical, but I started immediately and I still got bites but they don’t mind

    Hi Victoria,I have a question about Quakers parrot,I will like to know if they're Free Dander dust and also how much Feathers do they normally drop please if you can help me with this information I'll will Appreciate.

      Hey Omar hopefully I can help ya out... My Quaker is a little dusty but not nearly as bad as cockatoos by any means. He is definitely dustier than my green cheek but again it's not bad. I used to have pretty bad allergies and he has never bothered them. As far as feathers go... Again it's more than my green cheek but not bad. The majority of the feathers I find are little baby looking feathers that kind of get mixed in with dust and pellets that they drop. Overall not bad at all at least for me. Hope this helps.
