    Quaker parrots are too adorable for my sanity. My husband and I have our hands almost full at the moment, but once we have the time and space, a quaker is being added to our flock.

    WOW. Chatty Kathy there at the end. (a doll from 60s or so that you'd pull her string to make Kathy talk) That was hilarious! Almost like: you're talking about me and I'm RIGHT HERE!! 😆😆
    Such great information as always from Bird Tricks. 👍

    Not really on topic but we just rescued a lesser sulfur crested cockatoo female and she does this thing where she tucks her wing between her legs and I was wondering if it is a hormonal thing??? I have a grey and a conure and neither have ever done anything like that before!!

    I need to do a lot of this with my female, Mayday. She’s EXTREMELY cage aggressive and territorial. She’s a big miss grumpy pants. I have to be more consistent when she does good things in general. Anything that’s NOT bite or screechatating gets praise and treats.
    Also, she’s not grooming her neck and head pin feathers at all really. I think I need some different toys and perches for her to rub on than the current ones. I HAD to towel her today to help her out. Once I did and she calmed down, she cooed and peeped lightly while o was massaging her pins out. So I know she really appreciated it and knew I was helping. It’s just I wish she’d groom better on her own.

  • @richardjohnstone1374
    @richardjohnstone1374 3 роки тому +3

    So the clicker is just an audible noise for bird to know when something has been done correctly or 'praise'?

  • @SierraGal
    @SierraGal 4 роки тому +27

    I’m a retired dog trainer and love watching you work with birds using classic conditioning concepts.
    I’ve got one tip for you to think about. When this person displayed awkward hand dexterity with clicker & treats asking for a step up, it reminded me what I teach and is an easy work around. Sometimes clients struggle with leaches, clickers and treats so I teach a “reward marker” and in essence it becomes the clicker when I don’t have one handy. I say YES - while I also CLICK (when in hand) - followed by treat reward. Sometimes I’ll get something when not “training” and then I’ll mark the behavior then have to scramble to get a reward quickly cuz I don’t always have treats on me! So it’s a verbal marker when we don’t have a clicker, as we always have our mouths with us but not always a clicker.
    I so wish I could live with a bird. I’d love to fly them. I own bird dogs so it would be torture for them. That’s my favorite thing to watch you guys do is free flying.

    • @foreverisover496
      @foreverisover496 4 роки тому

      I don't know your dogs but it doesn't have to be bad for either dog or bird :) I got both and they're happily coexisting. I taught my dog to leave whenever the birds come near him or near the floor and of course they're always supervised when in the same room :)

      シUwU ever bird has their own story and their own inherited differences. Wild, tame, hand fed, momma bird reared, neglected, spoiled, trained, adopted, rehomed. Some are just jerks! Mine can go from floofy cuddly angel to a$$hole in 10 seconds sometimes!

    • @sunnycharacter

      The Official Primal Kyogre you can’t visually. I think a trained aviary vet can by feel. Get a dna test is your best bet. Ivy’s breeder sent off for a dna year for her, a lab in Florida for $25.

  • @marybethfuesting2894
    @marybethfuesting2894 4 роки тому +3

    My Quaker, Paco, doesnt like the perches at the vet's office so I trained him to lie on the scale at about 6 months old. I first started with being able to hold him, then progressing to laying on his back, then on the table, then on a scale. From what I remember (this was nearly 13 years ago), took about 2 weeks. All the vets & their techs have a good laugh on our first visit with them.

    The first parrot I ever had was a Quaker. I had no experience or knowledge of how to train any bird. I was only 14 or 15 maybe, and my parrot would lay in my hands. I think may just be part of their natural behavior. I love these birds I definitely want to get another one eventually.

I understand every bird has their own quirks and personalities. I'm just curious because I've been thinking about adopting one, luckily my mom has own 2 birds but I would appreciate any input I can receive.

I’ve tried feeding them on separate perches in a neutral area and it seems to work for a bit but one of the birds is not food motivated, and starts to try to attack the other bird what can I do? PLEASE HELP!:
    I have a quaker myself, she is just 6 months old but she cannot go upside down and seems to have very bad gripping and balance ( especially compared to my 8-year-old rescue conure who can easily go upside down on my finger) her feathers only seems relaxed like this monk here occasionally ( we call that the big fluff when she gets so relaxed and fluffy she shakes) she's comfortable with me but not like the monk here. I've known her since she was just weeks old, should I be concerned if this is normal behavior? I do not know of anyone else with a quaker!
