How To Tame and Bond With Your Quaker Parrot | Parrot Tips and Tricks

  • Hi Birbsquad! When it comes to Quaker Parrots, I take a different approach to taming, bonding, and earning their trust. Quaker Parrots in general are a territorial species so we must take a different route in taming compared to how I tame a green cheek parakeet.
Please keep in mind that all Quakers are different. So it is important to pay attention to your parrot's body language and get a feel for what he is wanting. Remember, with a Quaker Parrot we want to focus on creating the bond and not worrying about the disciplining for now. That video will come next. Lets just have fun and find ways to distract and redirect your parrot's behavior into something positive. This takes a lot of work and patience but trust me... YOU CAN DO THIS!! :)
    Step 1
Strategy. We are going to focus on redirecting your parrot's behavior and distracting him from getting into Quaker Mode
Parrot Town's Streaming Channel for DIY Parrot Toys. Great bird community of super nice people. Check Sherri out!!! / @parrottown
    Flock Talk's Weaving Tutorial
    • Training Tutorial | We...
    Step 2
Different Cages and Toys. Having a cage specifically for sleeping, as well as one for foraging and playing is a great option to keep your bird from becoming territorial. Constantly switching toys and scenery up for your parrot will do wonders.
    Step 3
No Hands No Hesitation. During the bonding phase, we want to keep handling to a minimum. You want him to be able to trust you so lets take things slow. When you approach your bird whether its to get him off a perch or whatever, know what to do. Don't hesitate in front of him and give him a chance to react and decide whats going to happen.
    Step 4
Step Up. Its important that you teach your parrot to step up but don't train him on the cage or any area that he deems as 'his'. You can do this by having a training perch and plenty of treats in hand. This is a great bonding experience with you two.
    Step 5
Attacking The Family. Have your family member train your parrot without you being there. You want all distractions and all things/people he is possessive over out of the way for now. If you want a more thorough video on this, please let me know!
    Step 6
Screaming. Reward chattering not the screaming. Chattering is normal for your Quaker so we should reward those behaviors.
Let me know if you have questions! The #birbsquad is here to help!

Ty for this video. Our brand new quaker just lost his mate. I'm trying to form a bond with him to show him he's not alone, so far he seems to like only me. When I come up to the cage he will come to where I am and get really close to me. Day by day I talk to him, give him space but never leave him alone to long. I can tell he's sad. I hope to bond with him and give him some kind of happiness.

My daughter named our little rascal quaker parrot Rainbow and he quickly defaulted to being my bird for some reason. We have bonded well but he gets territorial with me about my shoulder from which perch he's cleary trying to train me to move around and entertain him with little nips to my neck. He is smart as heck and will sneak out of the cage if he gets a chance but he always flys onto my shoulder as soon as I come around including the time he escaped to the wild outdoors! That was a scary experience we tried hard to avoid but he flew right to me as soon as I showed up! I was telling my daughter how hard it would be to get to Madagascar when suddenly he appeared out of the lawn where he had blended in perfectly especially since we had been looking in the shrubbery. I love hearing him muttering to himself while he stalks around his perch and have already caught him imitating the way I say his name ---with a long trilled R Rrrrr-ainbow! It was pretty amazing to hear but he's definitely not a compliant little guy so I'm waiting to hear it again although my wife did hear it, too, so I have a witness. Once he is up on my shoulder he will happily nuzzle my cheek and loves to look at himself in the mirror and chatter happily in my ear. He hasn't nipped my ear-yet- but I have no illusions that my skin would be able to withstand the slicing power of that cute little scimitar of a beak. I have learned to remove his food holder from the cage and lure him onto it with some tasty seeds . It slides into an aperture in the side of the cage. He'll hop onto the little tray from my shoulder and start pecking away while I sneak him back into the cage. He does clearly think fingers are food and has already ascertained that biting the web of tender skin between the thumb and index finger will inflict maximum pain upon the human he is training. If he's not ready to go into the cage he's going to signal that to me by gently slicing up my hand with his sharp little beak. I just thank my lucky stars the little hoodlum is a vegetarian! Thank you for the training videos! I never had a pet bird before, this one was a gift and he gives us all more joy than grief with his cuteness and his antics sliding down the bars of his cage, hanging from its roof by one foot, and complaining bitterly when we come home after shopping if he's been left alone too long. We've had him 2 months and he's still a tiny little thing but he has so much personality it's amazing!

Hey, Victoria! I really enjoyed this video. I am happy to report that I have had none of these issues with my blue quaker, Norman. I got him on 30 June 2020, just before he turned two months old, and he is the sweetest and most snuggliest baby. He is tolerant of anything I do to him, including putting on his flight harness for brief periods to train and get him used to wearing it without fiddling with it. I didn’t wean him, but he has been doing that ridiculously adorable quaking after only knowing me for a few hours. He makes the cutest little peeps when he does it, too, and he quakes more often when he’s sleepy. He LOVES when I mimic his quake peeps when he’s settling in his cage to sleep. He learned to step up in under a week, never bites, tries his best to tell me when he has to poop, and is really great with my roommate and my boyfriend. He squawks when I leave the room, but he quickly switches to chattering and practicing all the sounds he knows instead. He only goes in his cage at night or when I leave the house, and he is always SO excited to see me in the morning or when I come home.
So! Will he always be this sweet?? I really hope so! 😭 He is my first snuggly bird!

@@TheCoinBird Aw! Thank you so much for asking. He’s been great!! He’ll be three years old on 11 May! He’s going through the most noticeable molt since I first brought him home, and, honestly, he still has way more good days than grumpy days! If he has a day where he seems a little punky, I just give him a little more cage time, and he’s actually started playing with his toys! He never cared a whole lot about his toys until very recently.
He is still incredibly affectionate and even has manners. (He asks permission with a kiss when he wants something. 🥹💙) Honestly, ever since some toxic people left my life recently, he hasn’t really BITTEN me in a long time; just those occasional “I feel like being a jerk” bites that birds do sometimes. I love him so much, and I feel so fortunate to have him in my life. 💙💙💙

I've had my new Quaker parrot, a female named Calypso, since August 7th. She had bonded with me really fast. Within the first week she snuggled up to my chin and would hang out for awhile. now in the morning she will squawk for me and not stop until I go get her. It is so adorable. She is 5 months old and was hand fed. She is such a joy to me. She was never really shy of the hands, maybe because she was hand fed. She has the step up command almost down pat. She is so smart.

I just adopted a Quaker parrot a week ago yesterday and he/she was a re-home who came from an amazing family and is incredibly smart and he’s been doing great. I’ve been watching your videos as I’ve wanted a Quaker for about a year now (I have other parrots but Quakers are much different). Before I met my Loki I had tracked down a Quaker breeder about 6 hours away and am actually still considering getting the baby Quaker in a couple weeks because Loki has been so great. I too have a green cheek conure and a quaker parrot housed together. I got them a few weeks ago and they are the most precious things. Thomas (my blue quaker) is quiet execpt when he is calling out to Patrick. They are both suprisinly quiet. Thomas often gets mood swings as expected and he is super observant and reserved. He loves to sit of my shoulder and grunt very quietly. Patrick is go go go. He doesn't like to fly as much as Thomas. Patrick likes to find the hardest way to get up and he loves chewing on his coffee wood perch and his little plastic chain. I find that these two species are almost polar opposites which is super cute. They were raised together since very young and they preen eachother all the time. They are inseperable.

I love the idea of separate cages for sleeping and daytime, I was planning to do this when I adopt a budgie later this year with the same reasoning you gave for the quaker :) This is a very helpful video, thank you for taking the time to put this together.
Also I love how you try to make the channel a safe space for people to talk about parrot care without lettibg our differences get in the way of peaceful communication. This is a third "parrot community" of that sort that I came across and I wonder now if people in the bird community normally tend to be mean and that is why you (the communities' creators) make a point to say explicitly that we should be civil to each other lol. Or maybe it's our woman thing, because the other communities' creators are also women :D Just a loose thought, it's very late in my time zone now :D Love you!

I currently have a 10 month old Quaker Parrot and I’ve had him since March. I am very blessed that he is not aggressive when it comes to his cage and toys. But he does prefer to be with me instead of on a stand. He will usually fly to me when I let him out of his cage or if I go to leave the room. He kisses me back and we will sing together (mostly him whistling) and he even will sleep under my chin or where my shoulder meets my neck. Quaker Parrots are amazing birds

Spazzy little creeps. They just lose their minds.. but they have two brains; EVIL DEMON and I LOVE YOU SO MUCH I'M GOING TO EXPLODE.. SERIOSLY.

I had good success with my quaker at the begin by playing on the floor. When I got her from the store she had clipped wings so couldn't fly around. Since they prefer higher spots instead of the floor , she always wanted to climb on me and getting used of the contact in the process. Now she is bonded and we take walks outside around the house where she get to free fly.

My future quaker just hatched and I am waiting for the owners to finish hand feeding them until they are fully weaned so I can go pick him up! Super excited!! You probably mentioned somewhere in another video when you got your first quaker Yoshi… Was he hand fed by you when he was a little baby? Or when did you get him? I’m wondering if the bonding process would be much easier since I am getting him basically at nine weeks old?

I have a rescue Quaker parrot that was caged for 3 years without being let out. He is now allowed out and has bonded with my husband. For the most part he is a very nice bird, very entertaining and a joy to have. He has some trust issues that we are working on, but my question is; Why won't he play with his toys? I buy him different kinds, foraging, chewing, with bells etc (no mirrors) but he doesn't play with any of them. Why?

    • @VictoriaRyann
      @VictoriaRyann  5 років тому +2

Hey Charlene I love your name!! Well if he was caged for 3 years and never let out my guess is the owner more than likely didn't have toys for him either. So he honestly probably doesn't even know what to do with them. May sound silly but you might have to try teaching him how to play and teaching him how to be a quaker. You can try playing with the toy in front of him and being all excited also baby talking to him. Also having some paper and shredding it with him should help. Try placing some of his favorite treats in with the toys and see if he starts picking at them. We can definitely get him there but may take a little time :)

I try not to react but the top of your foot the skin is thin and the bite is very painful 😖. I put toys on the bed and I sit on the bed, if I let my guard down one second, she has me. Why, what is she telling me?

    • @VictoriaRyann
      @VictoriaRyann  5 років тому

Oh my goodness yes it does hurt!! When Yoshi started doing this to me, I talked to everyone under the sun trying to figure this out. Vets told me this is completely normal behavior and basically told me to deal with it. But I've worked with Yoshi to desensitize him to feet. When he's near it and once I notice his mind set on my toes, I tell him no. Then redirect his behavior towards me or a toy and rewarded him for it with a treat. Sounds strange but with desensitizing, I would hold him and actually rub his back up against my feet talking to him the whole time and keeping him focused on me and not my feet. Constantly gave him treats during this as well. A few times with this he stopped. He will every now and then pick at them like he's doing now but never bites or gets aggressive anymore. Still haven't figured out as to WHY he does it in the first place 😂 my guess is he thinks it's another animal and not part of my body. Cause the way he used to act towards my feet reminds me of the way he acted around our dog for the longest time. But desensitizing helped us.

Hi there! I'm hoping to put into practice much of what you spoke about in this video soon :) Particularly the separate cage idea, since the fellow in question is very territorial over his cage. I starting dating my partner about 5 months ago and have previously had no experience with birds. But she has 2 green-cheeks, 1 quaker, 1 galah cockatoo and 4 budgies. I have managed to form bonds with the green-cheeks and galah (though she can be a bit unpredictable with her biting). But the Quaker has been a big issue. He's extremely bonded to her and is not used to being around other people at all, let alone handled by anyone other than her, and he will instantly try to attack me the moment I'm around.
I have been spending some time with him, about 30 minutes at a time, and he has definitely grown less territorial with me around his cage. He doesn't immediately start screaming and biting at the bars. But as soon as I get closer to the cage, or god-forbid raise my hand towards him, it all starts again. So I will speak with my partner about getting another cage set-up for me to train with him and hopefully at least get him to trust me some more so she can at least socialise with him more while I'm around.

I rescued a Quaker that has severely deformed feet, I also have a cockatiel that had a similar story. My cockatiel took 9 months to tame and to get her to trust me but she hates being touched or will only sit next to me if she has a perch and I stay in my sort of “area”.
Tofu my Quaker, will happily take treats from my hand, she won’t run away when I approach, she genuinely seems quite confident, but I think she is so stubborn! I’m hoping the tips from this vid will help me tame her as I want her to be happy and know that she’s loved!

This is so informative! I was wondering why when my Quakers are out of there cage they will step up from the floor to my finger no problem! But when they are in the cage they are so territorial they try to bite me immediately! I am going to start using the perch with a treat to get him to leave his cage. That is such a good idea! Wish me luck ! Lol I’m still trying to bond with them at this point. 🥺 but they will eat treat and pellets from my hand without running away. And they don’t hide when I come to the cage to talk to them.

I love your videos! I wanted to ask you something about my new quaker parrot - I got him (Tico) about 3 weeks ago and recently, in the mornings, after I uncover his cage and put him on top of his cage he has started squawking a lot. It almost sounds like he's angry and screaming at me but maybe he's just excited? What do you think about this behavior? How should I handle it? I usually leave him on top of his cage while I get ready and then he is with me literally all day. When I get him off his cage and bring him around with me he is usually pretty quiet throughout the day. Curious to hear what you think. Thanks Victoria - you're amazing!

Hi!! A lot of this made sense in this video. Thank you!! I have some questions. So this i bought a 2 year old Quaker parrot from my friend that can no longer care for him. I have a green cheek conure too. When the owner dropped the bird off at my house, he was very playful and sweet/ cuddly. I let his hang around outside of his cage cuz he has lots of toys and stuff above it. I decided to put him back in the cage to let him relax. I kept him in there for an hour and decided to try to play with him again. He went crazy and in Quaker mode. I have 2 loud dogs thought very well could’ve spooked him, so that’s probably why. So i decided to leave him in there for the night. So i covered him up and while he was in Quaker mode he was in his bed. He hasn’t moved or anything or fallen asleep as i know of. Is he missing his owners/ shocked?

My Quaker doesn’t really try to bite unless I’m actively trying to pick her up (she doesn’t step up).
My main problem is that she’s scared of me moving stuff, primarily her dishes, large things, and I’ve noticed that she doesn’t like yellow things.
The bad thing is that I have anger issues and a major pet peeve I’ve always had is when someone or something fears me

Hey @Victoria Ryann . Thanks for all the tips. Yesterday, to my surprise, a quaker came to my balcony; I found it looking curiously, I opened the door and it eventually got into the house. I was able to feed and get closer to it but nothing more than that. The parrot is now in the living room, he rests on the edges of the chandelier and the living room's showcase, it comes down to the table from time to time and flies back to its place. I'll get a cage today but I have no idea how to get him to go inside it, as he tends to move away whenever I try to make him stand on an aluminium rod. Thanks again :)

    • @VictoriaRyann
      @VictoriaRyann  5 років тому +2

Hey Massin! WOW what are the chances of that happening!?! LOL. Wonder if he was once someones pet? Well a good start would be to make the cage as desirable to him as possible. Of course plenty of foods such as pellets and fresh fruits and veggies, toys, and placing the cage in a corner where he can feel safe will really help! Since you dont know this birds past as far as likes and dislikes, this may take a little bit of testing the waters with certain products to see what he prefers. My guess is he was someones pet so finding things that would look familiar to him as well as some things from outside such as natural wood perches, seed mixes, crops, etc. As well as pet toys and the pellets from his assuming past life as a pet. Depending on his fear level, he may be freaked out by brightly colored toys so just be aware and pay attention to his body language when he sees them if you choose toys like that. I'd also leave the cage door open for a while so he can see hes not confined and can go in and out as he pleases. I know a lot of this I usually don't advocate with a typical pet bird but yours isnt a typical situation. Don't worry about doing every little thing right as of now with his diet, rules of the house, and discipline. Focus on making your home comfortable to him and letting him know you're providing safety, food, and loving atmosphere. That bond is key and if you can get him to go in on his own that would be awesome. The fact that hes so curious to begin with is definitely a good sign. Sorry this is so super long!!!!!! Good luck youre gonna do great :)

"George" I can have Ari and George out together and they actually get along. lol! But my Quaker was hand fed by me for a month and is having issues getting over the territorial mindset with the other birds. Do you have a video of how to integrate new birds and different breeds together?

We got our Quaker hunny 2 months ago when he landed on my shoulder in the backyard I instantly fell in love since I had been wanting a bird especially a parrot and thought it was either a Quaker or monk parrot but got confirmed at the vet but it had seemed to be tamed based on how it acted so I was a little hurt but knew I had to put flyers out but no one responded to them so I adopted him and named him hunny he’s the sweetest thing ever and constantly kisses me and plays peekaboo he dose tend to peck at fingers and ears though and want to see if there’s any way I can fix that cause he always bounces and makes a laughing noise after doing it we don’t know how to fix this behaviour as I’ve never owned a bird before but I love this parrot

I love your videos!! My question to you is about my Green Cheek. I got him at the pet store, he was there for 6 months, (poor baby), he is a little over a year. He wants nothing to do with hands or perches for learning to step up . He wants out of his cage badly so I've have tried several times to use that to my advantage. Till I give up and he wins. He comes out on his own and wants to sit on the parakeet's cage like king kong lol. Anyway, sorry for this long text. My question is did I already lose my bond with him? He won't come to my hand and when I approach him he kinda backs up still. I'm thinking thats because I have to catch him to put him back in his cage for bed. I've had to use the towel to grab him. So did I ruin everything? Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi! This May sound weird 😂 but i see your quaker nails are very short and my quaker has very long nails, how can I and should I try to cut them or can he do that by himself?
Another question: my quaker just went out of his cage for the first time, he didn’t know how to enter again so I had to put a glove and grab him (that was before I saw your video😪) to help him because he looked scared of sleeping out of it.
Obviously he was scared when I grabbed him.. do you think he will lose his little trust in Me for doing that?

I can do anything in his cage and he's comfortable. When I try and get my finger by his belly to step up he just wants to nibble and play with my finger. He's in a large cage with smallish doors. That makes it hard. How do I get him out?

He rarely speaks. We leave the cage open for him to come out on is own terms. Only happens sometimes and when he does it’s usually hiding away in a corner away from us.
