- Which reciprocating saw blade is best for cutting steel? Let's find out. In this video, I compare Makita, DeWalt, Warrior (Harbor Freight), Milwaukee, Diablo, Bosch, and EZARC. The blades were tested for speed and durability cutting both mild and hard steel. The Diablo, with carbide teeth, dominated the competition, winning in both speed and endurance. The SAWZALL blades to failure on hard steel. Well, obviously carbide teeth are going to do better than tool steel, as carbide is much harder and can handle higher temperatures. However I can't seem to find any other brands that make carbide-toothed reciprocating saw blades for some reason...
@@KevinDay Lenox makes them, Diablo didn't have any carbide blades at the home Depots in my city when I needed one, don't know if they weren't available or if they weren't out yet
Carbide toothed reciprocating saw blades aren't very common for the home user. While carbide is fantastic - heck, I make carbide end mills for a living, it isn't always the most practical for most home users. The blades do not like to be flexed, as it likely will break or chip the carbide teeth rendering it useless. And justifying $13 a blade vs $3 (even though they last many times longer than bi-metal) isn't something most people will do.
You do one of the best jobs of making sure each test is the same!

Diablo has a Carbide blade named the "Diablo Demon". I've only found it at Home Depot. Did some work on my vehicle having to cut out an alignment bolt seized in control arm bushings. Tried heat, air chisel & hammer. The Diablo Demon cut through the hardened bolt in what seemed like 10seconds...Diablo makes the best blades...bar none.

It really is one of the greatest shows ever produced. Years ago I bought the complete box set and have probably watched every episode. It’s a shame that they don’t make action packed situational television shows that are still truly family friendly anymore. The way they wrote and produced those shows back then, it didn’t need to be vulgar or immoral to attract viewers. It was just interesting and entertaining... As always Project Farm, another great experiment.

I've used the Milwaukee for years and have generally preferred it over anything else I've tried. This video pretty much confirmed what I suspected was the case. I do try to catch them on sale though. I've never tried the diablo and it is pretty cost prohibitive..BUT given the condition of that thing after cutting into spring steel, one could make a pretty decent argument for its value. I would love to see an endurance test of how many cuts a single diablo blade could do compared to a single milwaukee in regular mild steel. If it made enough cuts it might actually be the better value it if outlasts enough bi metal blades.

if you treat the blade nice by not overheating spots and bending it while cutting it will last a very long time I get about 2-3 weeks of heavy use out of them cutting bolts
Same here cutting tie rod ends and ball joint bolts. I dont even count exhaust because it barely scratches the blade. Ill never go back to bimetal blades. I just heard about a milwausee blade called "the torch" supposed to be even better!!
I got a 100 blade variety pack of Milwaukee blades at Home Depot that was mismarked as a 12pack. That was a couple years ago and I'm still working through them all. 👌
in a way this could be determined by the way it cut the harder steal and how fare it made it though compared to the Milwaukee blade. the diablo made it 6.8 times fuather than the milwaukee blade did so I think if a milwaukee could cut lets say 30 cuts before it failed. then the Diablo would make 204 cuts before it gave up. so for cost. so the milwaukee would make a cut at .102 cents per cut as the Diablo would be .06 cents per cut making the Diablo cheaper in the long run.

Absolutely great test. I'd love to see another test on wood cutting blades or "all purpose" blades claiming to cut metal and wood.

The two local home depots have them as "free" blades in regular packs of recip bimetal blades. they have a 5 plus 1 for $14 or a 12 plus 1 for $30. So basically, you buy the carbide blade and you get 5 bimetals for free :)

Would love to see this same test done with the wood cutting blades. As a remodeling contractor I am usually doing wood cutting and some teeth designs are really unique making for an interesting comparison. These bi metal blades in this video also varied in teeth design. I’ve used them all except for the cheapest 2. I always found diablo and Milwaukee to be the best. Dewalt is pretty good too. If you really need to cut something serious, you can find diamond blades that'll get through it. They're pretty spendy, but if you need to use them it's worth because you know it'll just eat its way through it.
Yep, I did notice so I went to buy one Diablo sawzall blade to cut the 4"cast iron. I love it.
You should do dremel attachments sometime! Allot of companies make their own dremel attachments that are cheaper, it might be worth knowing how they compare to the name brand.

Great idea. I bought some cheap cutting disks and they wore out much faster than my old Dremel disks.
interesting idea, I will say from first hand experience I've found that dremel bits crushed the other brands I've used, night and day difference.
Just don't buy the cheap Harbor Freight attachments or the rotary tool itself cuz they are junk......
I think the reason that the Diablo failed the test was due to chip clearing - once it got to the thick section, it didn't have enough reciprocating motion to let the chips out.
I agree. The iron was slightly too wide with the sawzall only having a 1 and 1/8 inch stroke.
Completely it would have easily cut through if it was being moved around a bit. Have to get them chips out you can see it welded them in there.

When cutting thick metal w Sawzall I try to spread the load over more of the blade by using a slow in and out motion. That keeps the blade from heating up in one spot. How come the Lenox blades didn’t get tested ?
I’m rolling around on the floor , foaming at the mouth , having a UA-cam induced stroke. As a professional HVAC guy I only use Lenox blades, mostly the Lazer style on metal. Good video need to revisit with blades that the pros use.

another HVAC Plumber here, yes the Lenox blades are , to me , on par with the Milwaukee and Dewalt , offerings, but the price is quite up there for Lenox ( but that could be a wholesale pricing thing), and I usually only get them when someone else is paying. For my own projects and for steel cutting, I do love the diablos.
An electrician here, I build a lot of emt and I prefer Lenox, greenlee or Milwaukee. They all seem on par with one another. The Milwaukee metal blades where I like all say carbide, none are bi-metal. Different from your test
Lenox is sold mainly at plumbing houses. Milwaukee at electrical places. Bosch is more a Lowe's thing.

If those two don't cut it, it's 100% worth it to buy the $20 diamond blade if you're cutting a lot of metal. I live in the rust belt and often have to cut out rusted bolts etc... Been using the same diamond blade for well over a year. Before that I'd sometimes run through 2-3 of those DeWalt blades just to get thru a bolt as wide as my thumb.
Would it be possible to apply some cutting oil or something to keep the blade cool while doing the metal tests. Compare against the no lubricant stats.
This video accomplished in 10 minutes what it would take most of us months, if not years, to accomplish. So much great information. I know it took you a long time to setup these demonstrations. I certainly respect and thank you for all the information presented here. A superb video!

Thanks for making this video. I'm a frequent user of recips to cut metal and when the carbides came out I will never go back to bi-metal. PLEASE do a follow up using the Milwaukee Torch Carbide!! It is about the same cost as the Diablo carbide but I think it lasts a little longer and the blade doesn't have a tendency to bend when it gets bound up. I use so many less blades now.

I have a couple of comments on this one.
1, Adding weight was probably detrimental to the longevity of the blades.
2, when I cut with a sawzall I move the entire saw back and forth. It helps with chip clearing and uses more teeth. I know that would be difficult in a stationary test jig but it will make a difference.

#1 Good point. But at least they were all treated consistantly. And its been said to "let the tool do the work" so adding weight seems counter to this...but may well reflect user behavior. Saw blade speed makes a difference too, slower better.
#2 I think you describe common user behavior altho machine instructions say to keep the tool foot planted on the work which limits cutting effort to an inch or so.
Overall, a well constructed test!!
I had the same thought about there possibly being too much weight - would love to see a re-test with less weight to see if the blades do better in the spring steel.
that said - was glad to see the consistent testing ( as always on this channel).

@@mikelegras996 but weight is also a factor, like drilling metal you'll never get through it without putting a ton of weight behind it, and drilling at lower RPM

Been a carpenter for 35 years. Lenox has always performed best for me...that said, I have not used all of those brands
Yeah, I have to say that of all the channels on you tube I like yours the best. I have bought many items from your recommendations(still blown away by the Audew jump starter) . But you missed the mark on this test. Lenox recip saw blades when they came out were so far ahead of anything else on the market that there was no comparison. I have retired from the HVAC trade since then and don't use a recip saw on a daily basis so don't know where they stand now. Never less no comparison would be complete without a current Lenox blade. Also anybody that knows how to use a recip saw would use cutting oil at a reduced speed on 1/ 4 inch hardened steel. Same rules apply for recip blades as drill bits. I believe this test is couple of years old, time for a redo.
Edit: it's like comparing recip saws without a sawzall.

I have cut through Grade 8 Hardened bolts with the Diablo Blades where the others go dull instantly. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. No way to change the front A-Arms without being able to remove the bolts. The only reason I damaged the Diablo blades were from bending them from end impact which caused other problems. With teeth breaking etc.

Same for me. Cut my trucks rear shackle bolts with a Diablo thick steel carbide blade. I’ve never had the teeth chip but these bolts gave the blade a good test. I tried a standard metal Lenox blade just for fun and it raked the teeth off in a few seconds. The Diablo are worth every penny. When you can’t get a torch or a grinder in the limited space you have to have a blade.
Well, I've got a new brand: I guess it'll be "Diablo" for me from here on out. Dude, you are a _machine_ pumping out all of these videos!

I've had the Diablo $13 blade for over a year now, I just use some grease as lubricant if I'm cutting steel. I probably would've gone through 20-30 of the $3 milwaukee blades by now. (I used to be a diehard milwaukee blade fan until I watched this video and tried the diablo).
The fairly large individual carbide teeth are just unbeatable, and I just wish you could get sawzall blades that didn't have so much rake on them for more precise jigsaw-like cutting.
@Joe Hoe At the time when diablo came out with their steel demon, they were the first. Or at least, Home depot didn't have the fancier milwaukee blades on shelves which meant they weren't an option to me who was standing in the aisle watching this video to see if the fancy new carbide blade was worth it. (I was learning machining at the time after growing up woodworking, so I was aware of just how powerful a tool carbide was for cutting steel. It lives up to its expectations)
Honestly though, it doesn't matter who makes them. A flexible steel blade with carbide teeth of decent geometry is all that matters, regardless of who makes it. Price also doesn't matter as they're not really a consumable anymore: maybe I could've saved $7 on it, but over 2 years of life (so far) I couldn't care less. They (all carbide sawzall blades) just work, and work well.
Edit: Some internet research shows Diablo came out with their carbide sawzall blades in 2014, while it took until 2016 for Milwaukee to copy them. I'd say supporting companies who put money into R&D in ways that save the customer money and make our lives easier is worth it compared to supporting a Chinese company that just copies them... At the same time, All my tools are Milwaukee (cause they're so cheap compared to their durability) so that kinda makes me a hypocrite. But at the price of $13 vs $7 for a "consumable" that literally lasts years, I'll keep buying Diablo.
Also, for your other comment on the circular motion, that's the exact opposite of what I want. I don't have the room for a bandsaw, so the sawzall is my "precision" tool for metal cutting. A straight in and out motion with a non-raked blade so that the "in" motion doesn't make the blade tear into new material, but rather relies on the user's precise application of force would be ideal.
This could actually be done on the tool side by having the attachment point for the blade be 2-position pivotable so you could actually adjust the aggressiveness on the blade, or it could be fixed by just selling us blades without the crazy steep rake. (at the cost to them of having to stock another type of blade, which is a pretty significant expense)
If you live in the south look into axe brand its the best by fsr you can cut through lug bolts with ease
I use a sawzall at least a few times a week and have tried many different brands of blades. Lenox is by far the best brand right now.

It's reassuring to see results that confirmed my suspicions. Really good to know which blades can do a decent job while saving some $s, but what a great confirmation that if you've got more money than time, Diablo blows the others away completely!!!

The Workbench - same here! I went with the Ezarc blade to cut metal and the blade was okay for one cut then burnt and useless after that! Went through the entire pack in no time.... Won't be buying them again....

@@ProjectFarm Make sure ypur testing the Lazer CT blade. Meaning it will be comparable to the Diablo in its design. Its too bad you can't compare large band saw blades in high stressed steels.

After this review I purchased the Diablo carbide as I had about 250 feet of fence to remove doing our preschool playground remodel. Before I would saw through the horizontal bars. This time I sawed through all the nails where horizontals join the posts. This blade easily sliced through all the nails and I had nice clean piles of fence panels. It was quick and easy. Excellent blade.

I agree. I was blown away by it.
It's in a class of its own because its not one piece. It's a steel blade with tungsten carbide brazed onto it. Just like woodworking blades are made except its got the geometry for cutting metal. You can get nail cutting circular blades made like that, too. Usually called remodeling blades.
Now do chainsaw bars and chains! That would be a cool comparison to see!

I second this idea: Perhaps an electric chainsaw or a well-tuned gas saw, equally warmed up before each test (To keep rpm's and tests consistent) with a similar set-up as the recip-saw test. Stihl, Husqvarna, Poulan, McColloch and others.
I'd like to see a chainsaw bar & chain test too. Also homebrew rust preventative test.
there is really only three different types of chains to choose from but unless you have a 60 cc or bigger you really cant run the semi skip or skip tooth chains. they need a lot of power and are quite dangerous for a average joe. full comp(regular chain), semi skip, and skip tooth
I know from my experience hit dirt you done. A sharp blade kick add on chainsaw. Eric I think you backwards the poulan comes with a double skip blade. Have to by a skip

The best circular saw blade I ever tried was a Piranha, they will even cut through floor nails!!! I really like how you do the test to see everything gets a even chance!!!

I have a Husqvarna that slips going up a hill. I'll sell you that one. Ariens is a brand of push mowers that pulls real good on hills. Hondas all-wheel drive is not bad either, but they're only 21" cut.
I'm at the hardware store right now to get a new blade for my hacksaw, and I just searched UA-cam to see if you've done hacksaw blades yet and I'm not finding anything. Hacksaw blades! If you haven't seen or tried them, look for Lenox blades. Specifically 'the torch' for steel, and 'the axe' for wood. I can tell you from the fire service side of things that they are very good blades for cutting a car apart in times and places where hydraulic tools aren't practical. The axe works great for the Milwaukee Hackzall for trimming trees!

The torch is definitely a Milwaukee blade, and they seem pretty good. it's a fairly new marketing but I remember it specifically because it's so darn thick. Can't comment on"the axe" though. Honestly I've never used a sawzall blade I actually liked, but I never knew Diablo blades were so crazy. Def have to check them out.
the torch is definetly a milwuakee blade, theyre exceptionally good for a bimetal blade at cutting thick mild steel, can cut 1/4" plate basically as long as you want until you hit something and bend the blade i got about 20' of cutting out of one before i banged the blade head on into the sawhorse and it bent, still cuts but the bend makes the blade wonder like crazy
carbide is superior obviously but it takes a much wider kerf so for long cuts on mild steel i prefer the torch blade. but for cutting bits off cars or bolts off a truck the carbide really shines

I swear by Milwaukee Axe blades. Better than anything including Diablo for wood with nails work in my experience, and one of the most reasonable prices. Diablo is just too expensive to make sense.
I had a whole pack of Milwaukee torch blades I couldn't even cut through an exhaust pipe with one. Maybe I got a bad batch, diablo blade worked. 🤷♂️

I recently bought a pack of three for $29 of the Diablo carbide blades and I did a ton of cuts building a steel railing around a very large deck using over 1000 linear feet of a combination of inch and a half angle iron eighth of an inch thick and eighth of an inch thick inch and a half by inch and a half square tubing I did all the cuts with one blade with my sawzall and I killed the other two one by cutting into concrete actually did a pretty good job but it killed the blade and the other one by bending it by mistake so I just bought another pack a couple days ago and there are lotta metal cutting and I’m very impressed it practically illuminated my grinder for cutting small pieces

I've learned a few things from this channel, and my own experiences. DeWalt and Milwaukee tend to be similar in tool performance, while DeWalt tends to do it cheaper. DeWalt disposable products are not worth it. Diablo is expensive but worth it. 3M is the only sandpaper worth buying. And Mikita tends to be pricey and not the best performing, but they are the most honest about their claims.

I've used all these blades and I'm not surprised by the results. But the magnet and baggie trick....now THAT'S some excellent wizardry!! I seriously cannot believe I've never thought of that despite cleaning off swarf from magnets in the shop countless times over the years!

The diablo blades I get from amazon are only a bit over 2 bucks per blade. They sell them in a 25 pack for 63 bucks.

Only really good if you use you sawzall all the time, like me. Someone who uses theirs once in a blu moon, they would do better with one of the others.

I would assume those are the Bi-metal.. Ive never seen that kind of price any where.. It cost allot to do the processing on those blades.. they would lose money at 2 bucks a blade.
@Randy Murray I apologize, you are absolutely correct, the ones I use are the bi metal but work fantastically. The cheapest price I could find for the varbide vesion is 8 bucks a piece for a 5 pack.
I think a slower rate of blade speed would work better and allow the teeth a chance to cool some... on the second test (spring steel) you can see sparks flying, those are the teeth coming off!

Not really with out any lubrication as for sparks flying there has to with diff levels of steel carbon content also carbide can take way higher machining temperature
Most of those Sparks were actually the material being removed. If your seeing Sparks with hss or Cobalt then no your tool won't last long. Carbide doesn't care so much and can handle a lot more heat.
I agree I am a steel worker and I use a variable speed reciprocating saw at about 3 and even though the blade moves slower it cut a bigger chip

Likewise Bosch has a RSM9X2 "Heavy Metal" blade as well I've had good success with.
Watched this video in the Home Depot parking lot (not the first time) before I went in to buy blades. My sway bar end links were frozen on my truck and no wrench would even turn them. So, plan B, Sawzall. I had the Harbor Freight blades and went through 2 of them without hardly making a dent and they became toothless. DIABLO blade took maybe 30 seconds. I am buying the best blades from now on. Cheap isn't worth the headache.

@@ProjectFarm If you can get Forte Seal Conditioner, I'd be interested to see how that rates. I found it stopped the gearbox seals in my old corolla from leaking.

I did commercial plumbing for 15 years and i have run the gambit on blades and lenox is the best but cost would make anybody steer towards maybe dewalt

There is a minor error in your testing. While the harbor freight Warrior would be the easiest pick for worst blade; you used a 14tpi version instead of an 18tpi like the other blades you tested.
A 14tpi blade is significantly disadvantaged versus an 18tpi on hard metals.
18tpi would be described by most trades as the bare minimum used, in practice, for general purpose metal cuts. A 14tpi would likely outperform something softer like aluminum or sheet metal.
That might make a good video on its own: "Practical application of assorted tpi blades for various material types".

HAHA how funny i just used my Diablo Carbide blade today to cut out tons of old galvanized pipe in a basement. Diablo it the way to go with ALL blades. they last the longest in every category

Their sandpaper is awesome too. Diablo cost more but way, way, way, outlasts all of the rest but use cutting oil on steel cuts. It will definitely help in cutting and lengthen the life of your blade a lot.

@@abrunosON I was actually still sceptical about how fast it was gonna cut through. Used an old porter cable sawzall and it went through like a hot knife through butter!!! Took me about 40 minutes or so to make the 8 cuts I needed. The bolts were 12.9 hardness.

I think at some point you need to be honest with yourself about the job and maybe use a more appropriate tool, like a grinding wheel.
If there's nothing preventing a reciprocating saw with a good blade from fitting into a workspace, it will always cut metal faster, cleaner, and with less heat. Abrasive discs are slower, more dangerous, and create a ton of heat.

Thank you for the great video. I've tried various brands. Always come back to Diablo. Here in Australia they are expensive (eg. In 2023, one Diablo Steel Demon AMPED 9" blade is $36AUD - about $23USD) but they offer the best value for money if you are doing a lot of cutting. The AMPED blades work best with cutting oil. They cut through steel a lot more quickly and the blades last a lot longer than other brands. We also use Diablo pruning blades to keep the garden in check. Nothing else comes close. Excellent video, thanks. Diablo has been my 10” saw blade for years, haven’t tried diablo on my sawzall because of the horrible conditions in which I put my sawzall blades through. After watching your video I will rethink my blade choices.
The Diablo carbide tip blade is amazing as long as the steel thickness is 3/16 or thicker. Otherwise, the teeth won't stay intact. More sawzall testing videos forthcoming!
So nice to see a real world test for jig saw blades. I have been using the carbide blades for the past few years and just love them. The cost is a factor but the number of cuts just plain out weight this part of the equation. Really enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work and good luck too !!!

I was tearing up decking and i was using Lenox metal hacksaw tooth sawsall blades to cut the screws and i went through about 4 for about 6 boards. I watched this video and went and bought the Diablo and they are $24 now. But i bit the bullet and bought 6 and I’ve only used one for a 24x16 deck. It’s a dream to have in the tool box now. Well worth the investment.

I bought the $13 diablo blade a little over a year ago after watching your video while standing in the isle of my Home Depot, and I still have that first one over a year later.
And I've cut a LOT of steel with it, even 1/4" plate and 1" thick round rods, using just a bit of grease as a lubricant to make it last. The thing is a beast. I also use it for everything else like wood etc. too
