This video is such a reality check for many of us. China is doing amazing things Beyond Your Dreams really. Thank you for this eye opening info-video on where we really are in electric transportation.
Totally agree with you Jim. I went to China in 2010 and stepping off the plane and onto the train was amazing, the quality was excellent and very well organised. Tech they were using was several years in front of western countries. The cars were pretty naff and BYD were directly copying Toyota at the time, Chinese consumers looked at locals cars as undesirable and poorly made. The last five years they've transformed and done 3 or 4 generation step in that time.
Forget the cars. Remember when people were not wearing masks? Well they don't really wear masks in China as we can see here in the video. Barely anyone is vaccinated yet in China, but their pandemic response is at such a degree where all these people are walking around and riding in public transport safely without masks on.
@@tren133 He didn't go on any public transport and you'll notice that all the scenes were carefully controlled. Don't go thinking that is what China is like, you saw a tiny bit of the BYD campus.
I think Elliot is now one of my favourite Fully Charged presenters - his videos are great demonstrations and explanations of the amazing tech starting to come out of China. More please!
Brilliant production. If anyone from BYD is reading this, *PLEASE* get a non-taxi version of the D1 to Europe\UK. It's exactly what sooo many people are asking for, a practical, functional, affordable EV. It will sell by the tens of thousands. Then stick 450bhp of power in one for a hot-hatch!
@M HADI Let's hope that you can find where Xinjiang is on the map without the help of Google, before pretending to care about the Uyghur Chinese. Oh, not before you can spell Uyghur/Uighur correctly, of course.
Uyghurs makes more money and more free than you. They go anywhere they want without mask. Always being eye-opening to see how much prejudice Westerners get from anti-China propaganda.
@M H You might want to look at economic growth and influence. The USA is well on the path to irrelevance with only technology previously developed propping it up. Your last president gave China the incentive to become self-sufficient in semiconductors etc and they are now sinking vast resources into fab lab development. They will probably catch up in about 5 years then eclipse everyone else, probably including TSMC. I'm in the UK so don't bother calling me a "Communist China troll". I've worked and travelled in various parts of the world over the last 20 years. The USA was one of the least interesting places that I visited with large numbers of science denying people in parts of the country.
I think they will be the Tangs that Elliott was driving. I rode (carshare) in one of the hybrid Tangs for a few years and found it very comfortable. I bet the newer version fully electric cars will be even better.
Yes yes! ELLIOT!!!! LOVE THIS GUY! lots of things going on here. First and foremost, most things are Chinese anyway so buying BYD would be an option if it was available in the UK. The D1 has stolen the wheels from the VW I.D3. I like Elliotts journalism style and is always informative and normal. He covers technology that booming in an area of the world thats important. I'd love to hear Elliott speak a little bit of Chinese with someone from the EV world in China just to fully cement in my mind that he can actually converse in Chinese 👍
This whole video is mind-blowing. Every UK member of parliament (MP) should be made to watch it. I hope every western ICE vehicle CEO is already aware of the upcoming competition- if not they are in for a rude awakening. That basic taxi- I want one! I'd buy it tomorrow (I'm assuming it would be cheap)- I hope BYD release it in uk- a similar version for members of the public would be a best seller.
China haters most of them have never set foot in China to be awaken yet. China is no longer the little plastic toy dollar store country they love to mock any more.
Great video. I've long thought of BYD as being the great unknown Chinese transport manufacturer. They've kept a very low profile really, and only news of a bus here, or a truck there, has seen the way to our EV media. I always suspected that tthere might be more to BYD than meets the surface and this video reveals some of the rest. Nice one Elliot and China based FC team.
Great work from Elliot once again. I’m one of those people who’s really had to work at getting rid of their preconceptions of Chinese vehicles. I now own an MG5. And it’s build quality is super. BYD and others are doing great work. Thanks for this. It gives us all hope that the drive is towards electrifying commercial transport, which will be much more effective in clearing the air in cities than private cars.
Excellent episode!! Very well presented. Have been watching various EV podcasts and shows and I remember Sandy Munro saying not long ago that the Chinese auto industry will make a very big impact in the world. I think that is what he was talking about. Keep up the good work guys. Thank you for the wonderful content.
I’m pretty sure BYD, and other Chinese car manufacturers, are concentrating on left hand drive vehicles for the moment. But the Chinese MGs are selling well in the UK.
@@pass3d , yes, Nio are a brand to look out for. A source of mine in Shenzhen, close to BYD city, told me yesterday that while the BYDs look fantastic, they are having serious quality control issues, a lot of their customers are unhappy with their purchases, I was gutted to hear this, I thought they had these issues sorted.
Another great episode from Elliot. I love his enthusiasm and his confidence in front of the camera has grown immensely since his first couples of episodes.
I’m gonna get my BYD Han this Saturday and I’m really REALLY looking forward to it!!! Thanks for the video now I even love BYD more. Their factory looks like a future park in a movie
Theses aren't cheap cars. The BYD Tang starts at a 285000 yuan net price for the front motor version. If you want to buy this car in Germany that's 36500€. Now we have to add a 10% EU import tax and 19% Vat, making it 48000€. After the 6000€ BEV rebate, it's 42000€. If you want the all wheel drive version with good features you can easily pay 50000€ for the car.
There’s a UA-camr who just post videos of him trying to destroy batteries. It’s incredible how much punishment they take. The way fires are reported in the press, most will believe they set on fire the moment you have a 5mph prang
Did anyone else see the T5 and think - stealth camper? Would be an amazing blank canvas for a van-life type build. And Elliot, you're doing a great job. From watching your first video compared to this one its great to see you relaxing into and enjoying the job. :)
Another great review episode Elliot. You were like a kid in a candy store! I don't expect to see many BYD vehicles here in Canada (except maybe a few buses) anytime soon but it is nice to know that such vehicles do exist and I'm with you Elliot ... the D1 is all the car I need and want so yeah .. I'm gutted to that we can't get one.
BYD has been working continuously to take what is already in the market, improve and now innovate. They deserve the respect and a place in the automotive world. I only wish they would drop the leather and focus on sustainable fabrics. Future is animal friendly
Yep, 12 BYD B10 buses in my hometown in Sweden! The competition increases for the European car manufacturers (and others)! They can sort of skip a development step.
China generates over 60% of its electricity from burning coal, so while the local environment may be cleaner, there is still a considerable amount of pollution from these forms of transport.
Logan Zhou the clean tech does not extend to the removal of the co2 that is generated by burning coal. Whilst the production and use of electric vehicles provides the opportunity to utilise renewable energy, the facts are that any increased usage in many areas of China will currently be met by coal. This is having a major impact on the global environment even if the use of these EV’s has minimal impact locally.
@@Magnitio1 The key idea is to replace coal powerplant with nuclear power. I feel that China will get their commercial fusion gears soon, while here in Germany nuclear power will phase-out in this decade, instead Germany purchases nuclear power from other countries.
That has to be one of the most fascinating videos I have seen on this channel. It is also a brilliant production in all respects. This is why I pay my Patreon subscription. Thank you.
Thank you very much die this great Video!! I find IT really interesting, what the BYD Factory looks like - and I have never seen one of their Trucks or Busses before!
Elliot is doing great content, shame they did not let him loose driving one of the buses. The dedicated EV for a taxi is interesting. The EV black cabs are excellent for high volume city work but I have seen comments that they are far too expensive for rural, country work. The one shown here would be perfect for that. A purpose build but "normal" car specifically for minicabs
@@soowo5942 the letters are not directly correlated. They start with the heaviest and work back down, in the UK they start with the lightest and work up. Odd that they decided to give convention a thumbs down.
I am very impressed... it's amazing what can be accomplished, in a relatively short amount of time, when a country and company can work in harmony. Who benefits here? The people!
Great video and hugely informative. Fully Charged has a winner here as China content is not very easy to see and it's great for the rest of the world to marvel how far they have come. I hope BYD come to Australia. Warren Buffet is invested in BYD and he doesn't make poor choices so this company is going to go far. If I was a European manufacturer I'd be seriously worried brand loyalty only go so far.

But, Toyota already has a deal to use BYD blade batteries in coming models.... So its ironic how fanbois did not want to believe BYD had superior battery tech when this post came out... smh....
I live in Indianapolis, IN (US) and we have articulated BYD buses running in our BRT system. They don’t have the range which was promised by BYD but that only really impacts the system in the winter. Last time I checked, they were working on a fix.
I read the news. It seems to me that it was due to miscommunication or negligence. I mean people expect lower ranges in winter for EVs. The authority should get the bus test run before rushing for the purchases. I'm sure the diesel buses running city routes, ideling all the time won't manage to make EPA rated range either.
Excellent episode to see that various products BYD has. All seems modern and well planned. The battery technology is great for being safe and low cost.
Excellent presentation. A lot to learn from - especially the functionality of the various compartments of the car! Very well thought of for drivers and passengers 👍👍
Awesome Tour! Holy cow, they got their own rail system ! That's sweet 😃 I thought the Han was the coolest vehicle @ the expo you showcased a few months back! & the T5 looks like it'd make a great Food-Truck, like the kind with a kitchen in the back & ability to serve through a side window or something. Very spacious. Would be really amazing to see two changes made: 🥇) A change from leather to a nice vegan leather for their interiors 🥈) A partnership with Tesla for their FSD Hardware/software Thanks again, Elliot & the Fully Charged team for another amazing episode ☮️🙏🏽
I am extremely impressed by them! I remembered little less than a decade ago when I was commuting very often to China, BYD was selling rebadged models of Toyota's older offerings. There were also many BYD EV taxis plying in most metropiltan city areas (e.g., Shenzhen, etc) and this was in the era of them old rickety made (brand new) in China VW late 90sto early 2000s model Jetta.
Chinese companies are going to turn the EV world on its head with affordable EVs globally. I'm going to wait until 2022 when hopefully I will be able to buy a BYD Tang SUV in Australia if the price is right. Great video, I enjoyed the BYD factory tour and the test drive of their vehicles immensely.
Wow! Imagine if that factory rooftop had solar panels on it. That would generate a lot of power. Such a shame that the D1 is limited to taxi service in 🇨🇳. I love it & I think it would sell well in domestic markets outside of 🇨🇳. Great range, great looks & a perfect size for crowded urban environments minus all the extra bells and whistles that almost nobody would ever use; just a good basic car that so happens to be electric.
a very welcome tour of BYD, demonstrating to the rest of the world just why the EV market is going to be flooded with Chinese EVs - a formidable company - looking forward to slightly smaller, luxury performance models with tru 300 mile range and c 4 secs to 60mph @ c £20k UK - still not a fan of 'Toss in a Tablet' for control - rear space in EVs looks so good...I think I want to hire Jessica Alba as my chaufeur-esse :) More in depth reports on Chnese manufs please so we can all try and build a picture of the top 10 to watch out for and the models they have in the potential RHD pipeline Now we dont have to worry about manifolds etc, manufs need to simplify the LHD / RHD flexibility of construction - particularly if they just 'toss in a central tablet!' - I dont want to miss out on what EVs are going to emerge from China :)
Excellent tour of BYD. Quite impressive. Did any of you notice the wheel design of the DD ride-sharing? Looked a LOT like those on the VW ID.3 Actually I think I vaguely remember something about VW and BYD partnership? Or was it another of the German car manufacturers. All seem to have a Chinese partner these day. "If you can't beat them - join them" 😉
Great, was waiting for some insights of this amazing company. I just bought BYD stock and I am very bullish on that company. Very overlooked yet and so innovative... Thanks
Elliot's excitement is so palpable - so much so that I half expected him to let out a little boy shriek everytime he would get into a car! And, oh, his presentation skills have tremendously improved. Congratulations, Elliot.
Other EV makers need to watch this video to learn what affordable cars are. Elliot does another great job and you can see that he loves doing these videos!
Thanks for doing this clip. I have always wanted to go Shenzhen. I have just finished watching a private video on the BYD ATTO 3. Amazing amount of features. I will have to visit via Hong Kong.
Hate on China all you want but they've seen the future and are building it today, while here in the west we've still got a lot to learn. Thanks for a great video tour!
Great show - thanks, Elliot! The Chinese are THE hope to bring affordable EVs to the market soonest. I have seen BYD busses in quite a few cities around the world - hopefully the cars will follow soon.
Lidar of cars will be cheaper in near future, Huawei has already worked own solution since 3 or years ago. Same like solar panel, large scale production of china will be good for worldwide technology.
Warren Buffett invested 10% of BYD total shares. Warren Buffet 's company "Berkshire Hathaway" first tried to buy 25% of BYD, but Wang turned down the offer. He wanted to be in business with Buffett - to enhance his brand and open doors in the U.S., he says - but he would not let go of more than 10% of BYD's stock. "This was a man who didn't want to sell his company," Buffett says. "That was a good sign."

Only one word to describe BYD......BLINDING!
Byd delfine will be soon
All the cars look so damn gorgeous, nice and practical. It's just sad that it hasn't rolled to every part of the world yet. :(
This is a good sign for adoption (partially). Quite a few of the EVs don't look as good as their gas competitors. This is slowly improving.
FWIW.... Toyota will use BYD blade battery tech...
YET...but it won't take the chinese long to monopolise the EV industry globally. Legacy car manufacturers should be very worried
No, no it isn’t.
@peace World not in my country
It’s about time more Chinese brands came to UK. Other manufacturers would quickly have to up their game and reduce prices to compete.
NIO cars will be sold in EU this year. NIO eT7 is really gorgeous design.
The cost of electric cars in Europe is ridiculous and range per charge is very poor.
US: you can't buy those chinese smart evs as the ccp will get your information from them.
This won't be easy, can't fight with them on labor cost, taxes, etc..
no point, dud to the UK law car's coming to UK just going to end up with double the price, kills one of the most important reason buy a Chinese car
As a byd han owner, there's so much good things I can talk about.

BYD is about to bring the first round of affordable EVs to Australia. Cannot wait!
I think they will be the Tangs that Elliott was driving. I rode (carshare) in one of the hybrid Tangs for a few years and found it very comfortable. I bet the newer version fully electric cars will be even better.
Aqui no Brasil tá sendo bem elogiado pela crítica especializada

Yes yes!
I love that one too. Simplism is the best policy. And it looks neat too.
Yes and Indian mp’s too should learn from china. How to make good electric cars. Rather than shitful of politics.
As Always thank you for allowing me watching.
Fascinating, informative, and solid!
Good job
BYD seems like a fantastic company to me.
Can't wait until they bring their cars to the US and we have some EV's that fit in a normal family budget.

I have a BYD electric car. My first car and I can confirm is very good! Super recommended
Such a good video - well shot, well presented and including loads of exciting vehicles. Why can't I buy any of these great Chinese car in the UK yet!
I’m pretty sure BYD, and other Chinese car manufacturers, are concentrating on left hand drive vehicles for the moment. But the Chinese MGs are selling well in the UK.

This is very impressive, can't wait till they are sold everywhere, hopefully without the dealership model!
This factory is just amazing 👍🏻
Excellent, great to see what’s out there - and Elliot is very lucky to see the inside of the factory
The amount of innovation and information they put in 22 minutes documentary is amazing. Good work fully charged
Excellent, but seeing so many people without masks just feels so strange now. 😷 😁
That blade battery is fascinating
Because there's not much threat of covid there.
Because covid-19 is not really a thing anymore in china
There’s a UA-camr who just post videos of him trying to destroy batteries. It’s incredible how much punishment they take. The way fires are reported in the press, most will believe they set on fire the moment you have a 5mph prang
I'd like a few, say 32, for my off-grid installation :)
Because BYD can make 200 mil masks a day, and we eliminated COVID long time ago.
Future is animal friendly
with less and less people consuming beef, alt-leather looks to be a material whose time has come ... also more durable.

China generates over 60% of its electricity from burning coal, so while the local environment may be cleaner, there is still a considerable amount of pollution from these forms of transport.
@@Magnitio1 China has the most advanced clean coal tech, and also, China is holding one third of the solar power capacity in the world.
@@Magnitio1 This is why China wants to develop electric vehicles and solar energy.
@@Magnitio1 The key idea is to replace coal powerplant with nuclear power. I feel that China will get their commercial fusion gears soon, while here in Germany nuclear power will phase-out in this decade, instead Germany purchases nuclear power from other countries.
This generation of vehicles from BYD really look great! A real improvement in design, and definitely can compete with other EVs.

Great post, and I do not want to seem greedy.
But FC needs to do a follow-up post, that's just about the BYD blade battery. Since some key aspects were missing from it in this story. Such as, not mentioning it's LFP chemistry or the unique game changing way it's constructed. It's truly amazing tech, so IMHO it deserves it own post.
Also when will BYD or Toyota or any other brand bring it to the west???

I live in Indianapolis, IN (US) and we have articulated BYD buses running in our BRT system. They don’t have the range which was promised by BYD but that only really impacts the system in the winter. Last time I checked, they were working on a fix.
I read the news. It seems to me that it was due to miscommunication or negligence. I mean people expect lower ranges in winter for EVs. The authority should get the bus test run before rushing for the purchases. I'm sure the diesel buses running city routes, ideling all the time won't manage to make EPA rated range either.
