Totally loved this review. Your best ever. Not worried that the ute struggled up those slopes out of the swamp. I have had similar experience in old Landys. Your mate did well though and you finally figured out the settings, so great effort.
Yeah, it's not perfect, but it's a pretty decent machine. Looking forward to trying the final production version. Should I attempt the infamous swamp again? -Gav
Love your style, best BYD Shark review i have seen so far! re. off-roading, this thing is VERY heavy at 2.7+ ton so i'd image it's not a perfect Ute to go on mud & sand, while its sister 4wd model Bao/leopard 5 with same DMO system has proved to be quite capable in off roading (released last year back in China).
I have got my work Ford Ranger stuck in similar slop that I didn't see was slop until too late. Got pulled out by a tractor. The absolute majority of dbl cab utes hardly even go on to rough gravel roads or even tow anything near 3.5t. This vehicle will be fine for 80% of NZ Ute buyers.
Slope bro, not slop. I'm sorry, i don't mean to correct you. But just incase u are a non English person i thought that it would be good just to let you know that being on an angle on a hill is called being on or at a slope. Pronounced slow-p.
Excellent review and video. You're one of the only Aus and NZ motoring journalist to know how the PHEV system in the Shark 6 works. I've posted a link to your video on the Reddit BYD section. In that sloppy mud, it looks like you ran out of tyres. You need some good M/T's to get through that. I'm hoping that BYD will bring the Leopard 5 to Australia. That's a mid size PHEV SUV with more off-road chops.
I despise hybrids, but I can see the reasoning behind this one. The Ute market sector has barely even transitioned to those yet. It will annihilate the competition. What a complete package for any tradie, with the option to charge all your power tools on the move and it looks cool. There will be so many of these on our roads in years to come.
Yeah, I'm with you there. I'd prefer an all-electric version, but this seems to do alright and I can foresee most buyers doing most of their driving without emissions. To me that's important, so I'm happy with it. -Gav

I couldn't understand why this truck would come with a full sized spear.....right until you showed the extra wheel underneath...NZ accents, gotta love them.
It’s driver error. Lower the tyre pressures for mud or sand then use a pump (you have vehicle to load to run a small compressor). That is essential 4WD options.
Great review, they look very promising - Having had a Ranger because it was the best of the pack at the time (towing power and off road capability) but then the ERG valve failed and Ford tell me to take them to court - I will never buy another ranger let alone a FORD.

and very likely to self disintegrate like hotcakes too 😂 Jokes aside, anyone who has experience with byd cars (already considered better than others) in the country where it’s manufactured, they know what to get and what to avoid when they are financially capable to do so. It’s only those who can’t or desperate would have to bite the bullet, probably with a set of armour alongside fire proof suit underneath prepared as so many of them either self ignite or it’s AI begins running wild on its own will. Hi Gavin on todays "Everything Electric Show" Robert and Richard mentioned you by name in regard to your BYD Shark review , so it means that even the English and Chinese reviewers are watching your Videos , fair play!
Traction Control must be OFF!!!! in this situation. As your wheels begin to spin, the brakes will be applied to that/those wheels. Snow, sand and mud modes must allow for spin to continue. Imagine feathering brakes going uphill????? But .... Loved your vid, really, I loved it, thank you.
Thank You VERY Mucch for your video review of this Pre-production model. I loved you jokes and your style is great, an excellent presenter ! Considering this particular model was not production ready and with obvious issues that will not be there in production, it's quite something. The production models will surely stand up & above others for a while. "Maybe" even kick the competition in the keister to match & better... BTW, as a Canadian I must say, I'm ENVIOUS that you can get these quality rides !
You all down under should count your blessings for being able to get this truck at a reasonable price. We in the US have to pay 80k for a truck that has the technology of a Yugo
The only problem l see here is the driver not let the car do the stuff on its own, in the mode setting to do it. And taking the same line up the hill at the end as the other vehical took, made the difference. And it’s been on sale in Mexico four months already, with no issues.
Man, real off road need off road experience. Off road tire and lower pressure, etc. I saw they tested this car in the desert wihout any problem, so little mud should be fine if you have the off road equipment.

This is the best vehicle review I have ever watched hands down. All the answers missing from the other reviews answered here. Plus the coffee! We need you in Australia!
Personally, I think he underrated it. 80 kms on battery covers ALL of your daily driving, but you also have the ability to cover another 700+ kms on gas if you need to travel. Super practical!
Seated Heats! Wow, nobody else has that! Seriously, great review, thanks.
I heard that and looked for this comment
Totally loved this review. Your best ever. Not worried that the ute struggled up those slopes out of the swamp. I have had similar experience in old Landys. Your mate did well though and you finally figured out the settings, so great effort.
That BYD Shark certainly does beat off the competition. 😂
I'm here all week, try the potatoes! -Gav
which ones
"beat off" don't sound too good.
Great review of the BYD Shark... I'm excited to see the final product.
Ranger is 2.4... so 300kg...
@@AnarchyEnsuesplus the tire pressure is too high

Great review, loads of practicality and fun with best of the both worlds. I’m not a tradie or farmer but I want one as well 🎉
Yeah, I'm not a traditional ute buyer either but I was impressed. -Gav
Great video. The weight issue for the mud was the only disappointment . It is a heavy beast. So not unexpected lol
I would not normally watch a hybrid review - but its worth it for the sheer Gavin-ness!
Thanks mate. Couple of cheeky lols in there. :D -Gav
@PhilmiiNutsakz Nah mate, he meant slop.
That is mud, also known as slop.
He didnt even reach the slope part 😅
Excellent review and video. You're one of the only Aus and NZ motoring journalist to know how the PHEV system in the Shark 6 works. I've posted a link to your video on the Reddit BYD section. In that sloppy mud, it looks like you ran out of tyres. You need some good M/T's to get through that. I'm hoping that BYD will bring the Leopard 5 to Australia. That's a mid size PHEV SUV with more off-road chops.
gosto do BYD King.
Buddy, you bring a great bright style to delivering your content! Brilliant!
The one liners in this video earned you a new sub. The Fleetwood Mac one was money!
First time watching your videos, excellent review. Sense of humor helps :)
-Gav
'... about as useful as a trampoline on a space station' your best analogy to date.😅
I was particularly proud of the Chevy Suburban joke. :D -Gav

I've only just come across your channel and I gotta say, loving the energy and the humour in your videos. I NEVER comment, but felt very inclined to let you know that this was a great auto-review video. Keep it up!
Thanks mate! Honoured to have you here. Had a lot of fun making this video and I'm thrilled so many people laughed at my terrible jokes. -Gav
Great review. I have an Atto and it has been fantastic. I really want this and at 58K in OZ it's great value.
Build Your Dream.
Definitely building this beast into a hunting machine which transforms into a BBQ. Stealthily drive to game trails, shoot from bed, butcher with electric carver and then BBQ with an electric grill 😂😂😂
Coachmen also complained about the noise of fuel vehicles.
Off road, that’s more driver error and wrong tires more than anything.
For a, “test bed” I’d say that it’s pretty impressive. Thanks for the review.
Driving into a swamp would get most things stuck on high pressure road tyres. Looks like a pretty awesome ute.
Nice and very captivating review! You gained a sub from Australia 🇦🇺
I enjoyed watching this review. Imagine making coffee at the back of the pickup haha
Well done Gavin, pleased for your success with the video.
Thanks mate! It's baffling, but I'm loving it! Not that many trolls either which is surprising. -Gav
I couldn't understand why this truck would come with a full sized spear.....right until you showed the extra wheel underneath...NZ accents, gotta love them.
I thought also the he said "spear" which was odd 😂
Bloody kiwis. I dunno.😂😂😂😂😂😂
For hunting reasons of course. Spare, spear pronounced & sound the same, not sure how other countries pronounce it.
Us kiwis don't get the joke.. why can't you spell?
This has to be the best review yet. Thank you.
Seated heats.
You Sir have gained another subscriber. More of this please
Gives new meaning to Coffee on the run.
Makes me wonder what gimmick I could do next on the production version? Hmmmmm. -Gav
@7:10 "Seated heats" 🤔🤣🤣 Great video! Lots of great info!
Lived in NZ for 16 years and used to work on that great south road. Missed the place. Your show feels like a Top Gear episode. Nicely done!
Once people get over their egos about "Chinese" utes, these things will sell like hotcakes amongst the tradies. Straight out of the box be able to turn up to a job site, charging your battery tools on the way without having to add dual batteries and wiring etc. Even for remote camping the power outlets will be a godsend
and very likely to self disintegrate like hotcakes too 😂
Jokes aside, anyone who has experience with byd cars (already considered better than others) in the country where it’s manufactured, they know what to get and what to avoid when they are financially capable to do so. It’s only those who can’t or desperate would have to bite the bullet, probably with a set of armour alongside fire proof suit underneath prepared as so many of them either self ignite or it’s AI begins running wild on its own will.
Plenty of videos of that if you look hard enough.

Hi Gavin on todays "Everything Electric Show" Robert and Richard mentioned you by name in regard to your BYD Shark review , so it means that even the English and Chinese reviewers are watching your Videos , fair play!
Awesome review. Cant afford it and dont have room for it but you sold me.
Good tips, thanks mate. I'd love to have another go at the swamp in the production version! -Gav
@@evtorque wrong, stability control must be off. Brake traction control is a good thing. Most people don't know the difference.
Thanks mate. I'm really thrilled I got the chance to drive it. Seems like a decent machine, even as a pre-production vehicle. -Gav
Aussie here, thanks for the review. I've ordered one. I really hope BYD are right onto the software updates and don't drop the ball.
Good review, well done. Checked all boxes. Cheers
You all down under should count your blessings for being able to get this truck at a reasonable price. We in the US have to pay 80k for a truck that has the technology of a Yugo
but you save on getting a 3 bedroom house for 200k whereas that's close to 800k over here haha

Gavin, you're the best! Amazing review of this quite amazing BYD ute. I wasn't looking for a ute but maybe now, I am. Thank you.
Impressive. My trusty 15-year old Hilux will need replacement in the next year or two. I have just found my next truck!😁
I hate EVs but THIS is 1000 times better than the Cybertruck.
Yes
1000 times better of terrible is still terrible.
Not difficult. Even Elon said: we've shot ourselves in the foot with this (truck)
The only truck that I really need, it's spacious for my family and can do overlanding. And it's a good hybrid.
The only problem l see here is the driver not let the car do the stuff on its own, in the mode setting to do it. And taking the same line up the hill at the end as the other vehical took, made the difference. And it’s been on sale in Mexico four months already, with no issues.
Ela chegou agora no Brasil pelo preço de 379 mil reais, o preço está alto mas eu gostei dela é muito linda.
Brilliant review as always, Gav! The Shark is definitely one we’re curious to get behind the wheel of. Looking forward to a test drive soon!
Man, real off road need off road experience. Off road tire and lower pressure, etc. I saw they tested this car in the desert wihout any problem, so little mud should be fine if you have the off road equipment.
Yeah, I'd love to try it again. Spoke to BYD and they have a test track they'd like to attempt. Could be interesting. -Gav
Very entertaining, I will look to test drive a Shark when I can. Thanks for the video! Please remember that to go off road you should adjust your tyre pressure as soon as you look like you may be getting stuck and not before. I always carry a Ryobi electric pump.
This is how I am with my ex. She keeps letting me down but I keep going back. 😢😅 Awesome review tho… best I’ve seen so far
Incredible review. The first time I've raised an eyebrow at a non trad ute. This is actually useful. Very tempting vehicle.
Well Gavin your BYD reviews always seem to be getting a fair amount of traction and I also notice that whenever you review the latest BYD vehicle you gather your highest number of views , also it seems 'Kiwis' and other overseas viewers have a strong curiosity for any BYD vehicles on your channel
Because they are a great company. I am from Denmark. Love them here

Very cool video - it's nice to see a new vehicle review channel in Auckland and made by Kiwis! I appreciate the similarity to CarWow's reviews :)
As a kiwi farmer down on the wet west coast I have seen non farmers try and drive where i wouldn't dream of going, but did like to see you try. As a general rule if you break through the layer of grass you are far more likely to get stuck. Keep you speed up and don't let your wheels slip to much.

Wow, certainly seems like the Shark is a serious contender in the UTE 4x4 segment, challenging dominant players like Ford and Toyota - a mix of competitive pricing, modern tech load design, and features tailored to the evolving expectations of 4x4 enthusiasts and commercial users. I can’t wait to get one when it arrives in Malaysia
not a big fan of BYD but hell yeah this looks so much better than noisy and stinky ford rangers. hope this reduces the number of rangers on the road
RRP $57,900 in AU following launch. In Au the $57,900 price tag is similar to mid-grade diesel dual-cabs such as the Ford Ranger XLS Bi-Turbo (from $57,630), Isuzu D-Max X-Rider (from $59,500), Mazda BT-50 XTR (from $59,280), Mitsubishi Triton GLS (from $59,090), Nissan Navara ST-X (from $58,945), and Toyota HiLux SR5 manual ($60,670). Going to sell like hotcakes given the torque and V2L for tradies.
It's worth noting that BYD doesn't charge any dealer delivery etc so if it's the same RRP as others it can be up to $3k cheaper on road.
😂 I like watching car review videos and this one is the most entertaining one I've seen. I would have probably done the latte thing inside the city though instead of off road, like in downtown. I'm sure you would have turned a lot of heads with that one. Still great job on the comprehensive review. 👍👍
7:10 seated heats lmao. Nah this review and channel is gas tho
I could see myself moving to something like this when I am finished with my Navara. Good looking unit
nothing could get through that deep mud with that weight and those tires
Sad to learn the ford ranger is the most sold car here, too. Those things are lethal. Amazing video though love the electric shift!
