Gday mate great video i used to have a lot of trouble catching squid from my boat until a mate gave me a tip , if you put a ball sinker in front of the lure about 2 feet and a swivel to stop it it works well , after he gave me this tip my squid success was amazing just about bag out every time follow the same procedure you showed only add the ball sinker take care .
Hi Roger from the UK.You might like to try your squid done in a pressure cooker it falls apart 16 mins at 15 lbs pressure one atmosphere above ours at sea level. Game changer and my mrs loves it and the only way she will eat it even a one min fry is too tough for her lol. you can bread it after cooking in pressure cooker and flash fry at high temp to get a crispy coating on succulent soft squid. Rob T UK squid angler for bait and table .
These are thin and super tender Calamari squid. Cut into strips and pieces , five seconds a side in is all they need. I'm pretty sure they would be great raw. They're not your average thick deep sea squid. God might be an Englishman, but Australia is God's country, full of convicts. 😂
My goodness, ness... that is wonderful Rodger and very well explained with cooking up some beautiful squid, I was hoping to come home sooner to watch this video, but I've been called out to my local spot and a mate had hooked a mulloway for the third time, this week. Sadly lost them all, back home now having a nice cold beer enjoying your video and I'm feeling a little seafood hungry now, Thank you Rodger you've gone from teaching me how to successfully beach worm throughout your UA-cam clips right through to making me hungry for some (Dericious) fish and squid. Thank you and well done mate 😊👍 smiles for miles ❤️👍
Good work, Roger. I had a look but can't see that anyone has mentioned it in the comments. Your pdf advice for squidding tips (and recipe) is all skew-whiff. Section three (3) 'Multiple Jig Colours' contains part of what is a recipe for making tortillas.
Hi Roger, Love your informative videos! After a 40 year absence from fishing, you've helped ignite the passion again! Just a heads up ... section 3 on page one seems to have a tortilla recipe for something and doesn't relate to a squid recipe. Keep up the good work
Roger big tens mate and a high five! Absolutely love it when you do an educational video together with how to cook the thing you’ve just caught! lol. More more more like this thanks again. Just fantastic tips again
after years of doing rings now when cleaning i just open the tube up makes it easier to clean and i just cut them up so i have squid chips or cut like thin spagetthi ,coat lightly with oil salt peper chilli flakes and sear in a really hot pan for about a minute
Hi Roger, congratulations on your awesome videos, they are very genuine, honest and helpful, with some amazing tips. With this video, if I could suggest it may have been helpful to go into a little more detail, especially for beginners on the rod and reel set up, a little more footage on technique, tips on accessing rocky landbased areas such as this, precautions, tides, conditions etc, and perhaps more footage of you catching the squid. 😀 Also just a note on the PDF download there is an error under Point 3 ( Multiple Jig Colours ) the content is for a Tortilla recipe instead of for jig colours. Cheers 👍
Excellent thanks Roger I'll be using your recipe on my next catch of squid over Christmas all the best for Christmas look forward to hearing and watching you in the near future.
Regarding changing barometric pressure and tide times... could you tell us best times for beach fishing and also squidding in relation to the barometric changes. PS: thanks for great programs
Good video mate. The white jig does works the better overall. As kids in the 60's and 70's we would use the metal squid jigs off the rocks or jetties, with a peeled potato on it. For some reason the white of the peeled potato attracted them. Got caught a few times sneaking some of mum's potatoes to go fishing though. She let us off 🤣 Cheers.
Nice Video, Learnt a lot and it works for me. Waiting on the next video, also looking for any future video on safety tips (Rock fishing and Nighttime beach fishing).
Hey Roger, I love your fishing videos. Do you have any advice as to how long a leader you would use between your braid and squid jag? And would you use a swivel or just tie a fg knot or similar?
Hi Vurhd, No, I don't think that you need to tenderize Squid. We cook them as is and they are great and tender. Some people like to marinate them with mashed up kiwifruit which does make them softer
hi Roger, awsum channel and thankyou for your tips but do you notice any difference in quality or taste by cleaning your squid in fresh water and not directly in the salt water, I've done both and now only clean my squid for eating in Saltwater or if I take em home whole I will freeze em and use em for bait only
The reel was a Shimano Sedona C5000, the rod was a Shimano Anarchy 702 4-8kg. It's one of my Snapper soft plastic rods. A bit heavy for Squid but still did the job. Shimano has dedicated Squid rods.
@@RogerOsborneFishing Generally at Low head or the east coast of Tasmania, my kids always get the better ones but I'm okay with that, they can have bragging rights, I do it for the family time.
I like pink white blue green jigs best times are run up tide nice calm water and around the new moon if morning get to the spot before sun up and afternoon stay to dark.
Squid don't see in colour, they are monochrome, only seeing shape, light and darken prey type, Thats why white jigs work well, during clear water and day jigging and pink reflects the morning or evening sunset/sunrise, also they detect UV and even thought to have thermo traits, their are thermo live jags which you can warm up a little and it is highlighted even more so to the squid, also UV jags work best and last 4 times longer when light by a black or UV light rather than standard head torch.
Hey Roger. As much as I love your videos (your videos helped me finally get into beach fishing), I find it a little disconcerting that you're not showing safe practice when rock fishing. The conditions in the video are obviously ideal from a safety standpoint, but it would've been awesome if you lead by example (or at least mentioning and emphasising it's importance) by at least wearing a PFD, and other safe practices. I know a few people who, like me, refer to your content for knowledge. On the same note, I know of people who've lost their lives while rock fishing (Hill 60 unsurprisingly). Other than that, I love what you're doing for the fishing community! All the best mate!

Thanks, will do!
Squid are predators that pounce when prey is weak.. so they only attack when the jig stops or begins to fall
squid is so so fun to catch and versatile because it's edible but useful for great fresh bait. Thanks for the tips!
Squid is awesome, you're welcome

Try using either celery salt or onion salt in your flour mix....adds another dimension to the meal. Much preferred by my family.
Great vid Roger, hopefully this helps me out tomorrow, weather depending 🍻
Good luck!

1. My rod is maximum 18 grams. What best weight of lure would you recommend I use?
2. What are the 4 most recommended colors?
Tanx
Thanks heaps for the tips boys

did you shape it like a fish
@@jb-es5zj Nah, peeled potato straight onto the metal shaft and connect to the line with a swivel.
Hi Roger, how do you tie the squid jig onto the main line (braid)? What sort of rig do you use? Thanks
In South West of France the blues works fantastically

Hey Roger, I love your fishing videos. Do you have any advice as to how long a leader you would use between your braid and squid jag? And would you use a swivel or just tie a fg knot or similar?
You don't need a long leader. 1m is enough and just tie a knot.
Fab video, do you need to tenderise squid? or only octopus?
Hi Vurhd, No, I don't think that you need to tenderize Squid. We cook them as is and they are great and tender. Some people like to marinate them with mashed up kiwifruit which does make them softer
wonderful video
Here in Victoria I find the black lure works best. Just my personal preference

@@RogerOsborneFishing give it a go, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on that
Hi Roger, just thought you should know Tip 3: jig colours, for a moment I thought what's this? Is he making flour doe jigs lol,
Do you have a video showing how to dispatch the squid humanely?
What was your rod n reel Rodger, missed the beginning.?
The reel was a Shimano Sedona C5000, the rod was a Shimano Anarchy 702 4-8kg. It's one of my Snapper soft plastic rods. A bit heavy for Squid but still did the job. Shimano has dedicated Squid rods.
Great video Roger !
Strange thing is even with all the freshwater coming into the harbour the squid have been going off from what I've heard .
Thanks for the info Ian
someone told me once that squid like areas where fresh water feeds int the ocean ?????
If u turn those tubes inside out makes cleaning easy, probs already know that tho, great vid, thinking of tea now 🤔 😊
Thanks Agent. That's true! What area do you do your Squidding?

How to catch squeed
Hi Roger, re squid, you are off rocks but I can’t go on rocks, where else is a safe spot to look
Someone told me they hunt at night...is that the best time to go squidding?
Day and night but night can be very good especially with a light
What about where to fish.....
If you actually research the bionomics of squid - you will understand that they actually can't see any colour. Everything is greyscale
Thanks for the info. Hard to know why some things work better than others. perhaps shades of grey make a difference, or white stands out more?
Best watch some of the Japanese squid fisherman. Entirely different from your technique.
Thanks for the tip

Just so you’re aware, the thumbs down impacts the UA-cam algorithms and recommends our videos to less people.
