Tried this twice now this week and both times caught my 20 mullet in less than an hour. Actually once the mullet were running it only took 5 to 10 minutes to fill the trap each time. I love this method because then you get to pick and choose the mullet size you want. The first time I just grabbed the biggest ones, which were bigger than pilchards.. but didn't have much luck with them as live bait. The second time, I went with sizes no bigger than pilchards and it is a much better size for live bait. I took the kids the second time, and it was so much fun and educational for them to see all the fish and also the seagulls hanging around. Great stuff.
One thing I noticed is that you need to be there at the right time.. if an hour too early, they are all sleeping/resting. I found that around 10:30-11:00 am was much better than 9:00-9:30 am.
If you initially throw a hand full of flour in the trap and shake it up it produces a milky trail coming out of the hole in the mesh. This acts as a “dinner is served” sign to initially show the mullet where to enter the trap.
Catching yabbies, poddies and yakkas for bait is sometimes as much fun as the fishing itself! When the kids were little they loved it as well and got so excited.

Through the lip, not too far back on a dropper style rig(patnoster etc) with the sinker at the bottom so bait doesn't get weed caught around the bait. Cheers for the video mate, I'm interested in different ways of catching my own bait. I am interested in the nipper video you suggested making in the future.
I find location is a big factor mate, jump in the car one day with a loaf of bread and go exploring. I've got a fancy $100 perspex trap and the first few times I used it I got nothing. I found my most productive spots are in canals with a bit of sand where I live. I would look on Google maps and try and find shallow spots like in the video, at the end of channels where there isn't much current racing along.
I feed fish in local streams, and found the best bread to use is multi-grain bread... It can also be used for line fishing for bream and stays on the hook longer than white bread.
Incredible that there’s such a large population of them at that beach. I’m in port Macquarie. Worming over 20 years and have only encountered king worms a few times. Any clues to finding areas that hold them ??

Hi Tim, thanks for your comment. There is a video on my channel on "How to rig Live Mullet". The poddys were caught in Burrill Lake on the NSW South Coast, however this abundance is typical of lakes and rivers right along the coast. Hi Scott, I don't pay much attention to moon cycles and barometric pressure when it comes to Flathead. Flathead don't appear to have a big swim bladder and Dusky Flathead are generally found in fairly shallow water. I pay some attention to tides but that's about it.
@@RogerOsborneFishing Hi Roger. :) It's a normal household fluro light tube. maybe 1 meter long. Now what you do is wrap it in a sheet and place it on the ground. So you get a piece of wire and tie some of the sheet around the top. Dip in hot water and clean the inside of the tube by rubbing the wire with the sheet attached in hot or warm water. That will clean your tube. You would not need much sheet to do this. Pinch off anything that looks too long or sharp but be careful not to crack the glass. Now your ready for action. Bread in tube and shake with water. Place where you feel best. I like to have the open part facing slightly up. Rub some bread up with water and leave it over the tube. You will catch heaps and just select what bait size you wish to keep. I have caught up to and more than 40 in one go. :) I suppose the tube is no more that 18 inches long. Great video Roger, just came across your channel a few days ago. Learnt a lot form your experience. I have a couple of questions. How long will the mullet live in the bucket without an aerator? What size hook are you using to catch Bream and Flathead with Mullet? Cheers.
Hi Robert, without an aerator you need to refresh the water about every 20 minutes depending on how many Mullet are in the bucket. I use a 5/0 suicide hook.

Cut from NSW DPI page........... As a result anglers may take any species of mullet, for use as live bait only, provided they are less than 15cm and the total number does not exceed 20.
Thanks Ports Fishing. Yes I knew that and should have mentioned it.
Hi Roger thanks for the video, could you show how you rig the live mullet for flathead, thanks
Sure thing! I have had many requests for this.
Great video Roger, the view counter will blow up shortly I am just sharing it around
Much appreciated :)
@@RogerOsborneFishing no worries mate, you are making me keen for a fish, I know where some big lizards are hiding
Great way to catch live bait, can't wait to try it out.
A quick question why don’t you use a cast net you can berly the water and wait till you see a school then ambush them
Cast nets are not permitted in NSW.
@@RogerOsborneFishing oh okay thanks for clarifying
Great video Roger, just came across your channel a few days ago. Learnt a lot form your experience. I have a couple of questions. How long will the mullet live in the bucket without an aerator? What size hook are you using to catch Bream and Flathead with Mullet? Cheers.
Hi Robert, without an aerator you need to refresh the water about every 20 minutes depending on how many Mullet are in the bucket. I use a 5/0 suicide hook.
@@RogerOsborneFishing hi do you hook it through there lip or fin?
