    Tried this twice now this week and both times caught my 20 mullet in less than an hour. Actually once the mullet were running it only took 5 to 10 minutes to fill the trap each time.
    I love this method because then you get to pick and choose the mullet size you want. The first time I just grabbed the biggest ones, which were bigger than pilchards.. but didn't have much luck with them as live bait. The second time, I went with sizes no bigger than pilchards and it is a much better size for live bait.
    I took the kids the second time, and it was so much fun and educational for them to see all the fish and also the seagulls hanging around.
    Great stuff.

      One thing I noticed is that you need to be there at the right time.. if an hour too early, they are all sleeping/resting. I found that around 10:30-11:00 am was much better than 9:00-9:30 am.

    If you initially throw a hand full of flour in the trap and shake it up it produces a milky trail coming out of the hole in the mesh. This acts as a “dinner is served” sign to initially show the mullet where to enter the trap.

    Catching yabbies, poddies and yakkas for bait is sometimes as much fun as the fishing itself! When the kids were little they loved it as well and got so excited.

      Through the lip, not too far back on a dropper style rig(patnoster etc) with the sinker at the bottom so bait doesn't get weed caught around the bait. Have tested heaps of different ways and they live the longest loke this, goes though no tissue virtually and allows them to face the current unlike back hooking.

I use a small fine grater to grate the spud straight into the water to attract Yackers, or grate a pingpong ball sized amount and just squeeze it into a ball, and use in a poddy trap. Great fun mate. I find location is a big factor mate, jump in the car one day with a loaf of bread and go exploring. I've got a fancy $100 perspex trap and the first few times I used it I got nothing. I found my most productive spots are in canals with a bit of sand where I live. I would look on Google maps and try and find shallow spots like in the video, at the end of channels where there isn't much current racing along.

    First time commenter. Loving your work, very informative, enjoying the old school approach to some of your methods. Consider myself a "try hard " fishing as you put it. A bit disappointed in the title of this video to then find its just about catching the bait. Want to know the ins and outs..... rigs, how to hook the bait, can you drift in a boat with this set up. Would like to see more fishing from you to show the effectiveness of ur knowledge. Can you please put up a video showing how you set up and use poddys as live baits? Or if one is in your channel please let me know where as I could not find it?
    Thanks again for your passion and knowledge.

The poddys were caught in Burrill Lake on the NSW South Coast, however this abundance is typical of lakes and rivers right along the coast. I had the same results in Narrabeen Lake on Sydney's Northern Beaches until I moved to the South Coast recently.

    Moon cycles and barometric pressure. Roger what do you find influences Flathead with these two factors?

    • @RogerOsborneFishing
      @RogerOsborneFishing  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Scott, I don't pay much attention to moon cycles and barometric pressure when it comes to Flathead. Flathead don't appear to have a big swim bladder and Dusky Flathead are generally found in fairly shallow water. I pay some attention to tides but that's about it.

      @RogerOsborneFishing  6 місяців тому +1

      Okay interesting, how big is the tube?

    • @MyVernon1
      @MyVernon1 6 місяців тому

      @@RogerOsborneFishing Hi Roger. :) It's a normal household fluro light tube. maybe 1 meter long. Now what you do is wrap it in a sheet and place it on the ground. Select the size you want then hit it with a large stone or brick. The tube will Pop and break. Unwrap and take out the tube. Now there is normally a film of white powder inside the tube. So you get a piece of wire and tie some of the sheet around the top. Dip in hot water and clean the inside of the tube by rubbing the wire with the sheet attached in hot or warm water. That will clean your tube. You would not need much sheet to do this. Pinch off anything that looks too long or sharp but be careful not to crack the glass. Now your ready for action. Bread in tube and shake with water. Place where you feel best. I like to have the open part facing slightly up. Rub some bread up with water and leave it over the tube. You will catch heaps and just select what bait size you wish to keep. I have caught up to and more than 40 in one go. :) I suppose the tube is no more that 18 inches long. Tubes, not a great deal round so keep some as well. Happy Days. Vern.

    If you use a bigger trap a bigger hole and more bread will you catch table size mullet?

    Do you have any tips in places to put the traps where seagulls will not harass your burley or the mullet, or how do you prevent the prolific seagulls from harassing the trap

    Roger, thanks for the video.
    Stick a “Dead Cat” fur coat on your microphone ( or mic area camera to eliminate wind noise)
    Otherwise your audio would be great

      Thanks Ryan, I usually use a dead cat in all of my videos because they are generally filmed in windy places, but this one was going to be a " UA-cam live" and was filmed from my phone.

    Good tips mate if only we could keep mullet that size in South Australia 21cm is legal size here 🤨

    • @RogerOsborneFishing
      @RogerOsborneFishing  3 роки тому +2

      Good size for Mulloway. A bit big for the average Flathead although a large Flathead would swallow a 21cm Mullet easily.

  • @portsfishing1101

    Great video Roger. You mention a bag limit but you didn't mention a size limit . NSW has a maximum size of 15cm to be used as bait for poddy mullet.

    • @portsfishing1101
      @portsfishing1101 2 роки тому

      Cut from NSW DPI page........... As a result anglers may take any species of mullet, for use as live bait only, provided they are less than 15cm and the total number does not exceed 20.

    A quick question why don’t you use a cast net you can berly the water and wait till you see a school then ambush them

    Great video Roger, just came across your channel a few days ago. Learnt a lot form your experience. I have a couple of questions. How long will the mullet live in the bucket without an aerator? What size hook are you using to catch Bream and Flathead with Mullet? Cheers.

    • @RogerOsborneFishing
      @RogerOsborneFishing  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Robert, without an aerator you need to refresh the water about every 20 minutes depending on how many Mullet are in the bucket. I use a 5/0 suicide hook.
