I'm new to this craft and have watched too many videos on the best way to section a canvas. This is by far the cheapest and the easiest. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for the tips. I have been frustrated with the clear cover "having a mind of it's own" but I didn't think about cutting into the tape instead. It's a good day when you learn something new!
I found in the winter in Canada I live on the west coast. I find that the glue on the sticker cover it very finicky and will not stick well. Usually I need a heating on to get them to stick.. the poured glue I don’t have that issue. Summer time seems to be the best time to DP. I have done two poured glue ones with no issues and I use tape to make squares section so that I can preserve the rest of the canvas while working on it. My first time was a disaster with pealing back and not doing sections at a time. The glue becomes less sticky over time! I am so glad I found these tips it has made DP so much easier!!!! And if you need to put it a way for awhile it’s still really good the glue! And I don’t use parchment because I find it degrades the glue. Makes it les sticky. Lol. Just keep your squared off sheet and use that. Sorry this is so long. Love you videos!
Thanks so much, Zinnia! These are fantastic tips! It's nice to hear that I'm not the only person who has issues with glue related to climate. I've had so many people tell me that their canvases are just fine that I was starting to doubt myself! That is super interesting about the stickiness of your covers relating to the cold. Thanks for sharing this information and your tips!
Seeing you use masking tape in your previous videos is the reason why I am also using the same to section my canvas. I only use washi as a border. Personally, I also find it more practical and economical.👌🏻😍 Seeing the washi getting thrown along with the plastic cover in an instant just breaks my heart.😆
Aw, that's so awesome! You nailed the logic perfectly! That's exactly the way I feel watching all of the washi go in the garbage. :) This way we still get to keep our pretty washi tape! :)
Super smart idea for the masking tape. I’ve spent hours cutting squares into the covers and sometimes (horribly) through the canvas with a razor pen…. This is a much better solution.
Really appreciate these beginner friendly videos! I'm patiently waiting for a DIYmoonshop canvas and trying to learn the tips & tricks to prep. Thank you! 💗
I’m new to your channel and so glad Katie from diamonds and washi mentioned you. Great video tutorial, explained so clearly. I’ll be exploring your past playlist for sure.
I like your idea of using masking tape because I have the same issue with washi tape on clear covers of it just curling. Washi is fun to use over the sticky edge though, so pretty! I have found release papers on Amazon in bundles of 50 or 100. So far, in the past year I have yet to find an issue with release papers. I have enjoyed using the release papers in an advent or random fashion. Rebecca from 4kids@147 started an advent calendar in 2020 diamond painting event and after that started using a number generator to have it pick which numbered off section to do. I have tried this and had fun with it as well. It can be done with a sectioned off clear with tape as well. It does add some fun random dimension to diamond painting.
I tend to peel back the plastic covers leaving the whole because I have long haired dogs. I want my canvas to be covered as much as possible until it's done. I might have to use several cover minders but that's OK. I like to follow the shapes in the paintings and go where they take me. I think I'm slower this way but it's a fun process for me. The paper covers are easier but their glue isn't! I like your masking tape idea, that is my thing with washi tape, it's pretty but expensive to just throw out. As usual, you give great tips and hints!
I have this one (of course I do. lol) I love this artist. I know some people don't like the clear cover, maybe because of the noise, but I really prefer it. I used to do all kinds of recovering and whatnot, but after a while I found I just prefer to fold back the cover. I don't even use a cover minder, but thats because I'm a rebel.
Oh my goodness, this canvas is gorgeous! I play violin and I need to get this one, it's perfect! 🎻💖 With double sided adhesive I cut off randomly sized sections, depending how organised I feel. Sometimes they may actually be similar in size or I just cut as big a section as I want on the day, depending how I feel and how much time I have to work on my WIP. And with poured glue I'm very lazy - I just lift the cover and place the drills where I feel like... 😁
I just always take the cover off (whether it’s poured glue or double sided adhesive) and replace it with precut squares of parchment paper. Works great.
Great demo, Jessica! I find myself working with a lot of double sided tape and generally work in about 4” rows cut with my trusty exacto across the whole canvas. Each time I start a new “session” I estimate how big a section I want to do, make a vertical cut with the exacto and remove the cover sheet for the whole section. I’ve been doing DP long enough to estimate pretty accurately but if something comes up and I have to pause for a couple hours or more, I just put a temporary cover on the section and come back later. I’ve been doing a few more with poured glue and find the masking tape grid works for me, but I use an exacto again and remove the section completely. I’ve never needed to use a coverminder but they sure are cute…maybe I just need a couple for canvas “jewelry” 😁 thanks again!
I use tape on my clear cover too, but I never thought to cut right through the tape! I usually cut a small part of the cover then start tearing it along the edge of the tape so it tears cleanly in a straight line. Can't tell how well I explained that but it's helpful especially if I sectioned off parts where you can see that certain colors start or stop.
Thank you Thank you. So glad I can use masking tape in instead of washi tape which is very expensive for a small roll. Thank you for this great tip!. s
Hey Jessica 😁 I've been using masking tape since I, too, discovered washi tape was useless to section off on the plastic cover!! Soooo much better! Thanks for putting that out there for others!💚💚. xx Cynthia
Thanks so much for this video. Can you advise me how to remove everything from my table (I don't have a studio or another room where I can leave it out ready for another session). Can I roll the canvas up drills on top and then just unfurl it again the next day or whenever I want to continue my diamond painting?
Great video!!!!! I think I will use masking tape from now also. You can get a ceramic x-acto knife, if you are worried about cutting through a canvas. Still don't press too hard, but it is safer than a metal blade.
Thank you. Like your masking tape tip the best. A huge mistake I made was laying down parchment paper and using a ruler sectioned off squares with a Sharpie. Big no-no because the ink bled through the parchment paper and was on my picture. 😫🤬 BarbaraSD
I have some washi and I reuse it because it sticks well. I do a section at a time and then reuse it to section off the next row. I do that until it doesn't stick well anymore. I may just use the masking tape from now on.
I like to section my canvas with 3mm washi tape I got on Amazon. I don't mind throwing it away. Plus, I like that since it is thin, it does not cover a lot of rows on the canvas. I find with thicker washi tape and masking tape, you have more in the next section to do because they cover up multiple rows. I am one of the ones who does measure my sections, lol. I don't like sectioning with release papers, because I like to see the canvas while I'm working on it. Plus, I don't like how it does not stick to your canvas after you've started a section. I'ver never used parchment paper. I have seen people have issues with their canvas not being sticky anymore after leaving parchment paper on it for a while. So if you are going to put it aside for a while you might not want to use parchment paper. Today is my birthday. My lovely husband got me some beautiful flowers and a DIYMoon Shop gift card. I also got a DIYMoon Shop gift card from my parents. Getting to see your video is another bonus.
Happy happy birthday!!! I hope it was wonderful! You always have great tips and perspective, so thanks for sharing them here! I think your method of working sounds wonderful, and it is certainly prettier! ❤ I definitely worry about the release paper/parchment paper affecting my adhesive, and like you I strongly prefer to leave the original cover on. Thanks so much for sharing these great tips and for hanging out on your birthday!!
Thanks for the tips! Very helpful. I'm working on my first diamond painting with a clear cover. I do have non-stick parchment paper but it's the Kirkland brand. Does anyone know if that would work? I do like the masking tape method though.
I'm so glad! I would *think* your parchment paper would work. I sometimes test a section out on any adhesive that extends past my drill area just to be on the safe side before I lay a big strip down.
You can get the double-sided, silicone coated release paper sheets from Amazon. They won't leave a residue or affect the stickiness of the adhesive/glue.
I always thought I had to cut with a X-Acto knife (because I seen everyone else doing it). An hour ago I just ordered a nice new one instead of using the one from our basement. I might cancel that item now and instead get a nice pair of scissors.
Another inexpensive tape option is the invisible cellophane tape. It doesn't stick too hard to the covers but works really well around the edges especially if you have a strip of extra glue. You can leave it on forever even when framing and it won't show.
My only additions are the ceramic cutters someone else mentioned where the blade isn’t as large so it’s less likely you will cut through. Also, Treasure Studios Art has a clear cover but an altogether different adhesive - mounting adhesive. I’ve never used it so can’t give any tips beyond not rolling it backwards!
Hi, Steph!! Great idea! I actually totally spaced TSA's mounting film on this video, so thanks for pointing that out. It definitely acts very much like double sided adhesive except for that thick clear cover. I liked the adhesive when I did my TSA - it felt really sturdy! :)
I love your videos - you are so clear and helpful Question: My latest canvas of Starry Starry night does not seem to have a clear cover sheet. It seems like a one-sided waxy paper cover with no labeling. I have tried to see if I can separate this but I don't think there is a clear cover under it. Is this possible? Would you have some tips for working with this?
Hi, Greta! This sounds like a double-sided adhesive canvas of the variety I discuss at around 3:30 in this video. Sometimes the cover paper can be plain white with no markings. The method I demonstrate around that time marker would be what I recommend for a canvas like this. :) Best of luck with it! :)
Could you demonstrate how you cut out sections that aren’t on the edge? Would you use an X-acto in that instance since you can’t get your scissors there?
Hi, Brittany! Your question made me realize that I am not very adventurous! I actually only work along edges, but if I were to do a middle section I would likely use an exacto for the paper cover. I think I would be inclined to still use scissors with the tape/clear cover, since the scissors seem to glide pretty well, but I will have to experiment! :)
I find cover minders too small and a pain always losing the back magnet, so I started using the double sticky colored antislip pads work beatifully.. so far no.problems
As a beginner I appreciate these great tips. Washi tape is nice to work with, but I’d rather use masking tape and spend my money on new wax. I find the clear cover tears and will remember to cut into the tape instead. Will try release papers some day and wonder once you cover your canvas and you have to roll it up some, if the release papers stay in place.
Hi, Ellen! I'm so glad you enjoyed! I agree - I would rather spend all my money on canvases and PENS! LOL! I am addicted to them! I haven't tried the release paper for any extended period of time, but perhaps someone who uses it regularly will chime in and help us out. 🥰

If I was in a really dusty area that was interfering with keeping my canvas clean, I would definitely consider it, especially if I'm not displaying the finished product behind glass. :)
I have issues with the plastic on pored glue but only from one company. What do you suggest for mounting glue! I am worried about putting parchment paper or release papers on it but the plastic cover is so thick that it’s very hard to cut through it
I had the same experience with that company, but I believe I still used this masking tape (or maybe even washi back then?) and cut through it with scissors. That seemed to work okay. :)
They can be. The larger the piece the heavier they are generally. I have quite a few hanging in my house, and the largest I've actually framed and hung is 60x80 cm. I think you could hang larger ones of course, but I would definitely recommend using hanging hardware intended for heavier weight items on sturdy walls. I also have a huge one framed and sitting on top of a piece of furniture, which looks lovely too! :)
Hi, Edith! Put the tape on the plastic cover that is not sticky. Then lift the plastic off the canvas itself until you can get your scissors between the cover and canvas, and cut only the plastic cover. :)
Not permanently, but I do like it when it sticks well enough to stay in place on an angled surface. I have some in my stash now that's like waaaay too waxy, and I can't get it to stay in place at all unless my canvas is flat. That is a bit too non-stick for my taste. 🤔
I have a number of spots that as t the adhesive had worn off and drills won't stick. I tried craft bond glue. Not good. Ty hen Elmer's restick Glue pens. Still no sticky adhesive. Anybody know what else you can do?
I have had good luck with baby wipes. It helps to bring back the sticky. There is also Aleene’s Tacky Glue that you can put down in small sections and place the drills. Also, Diamond Dotz has a glue especially for diamond painting.
I don't think there's a timeline per se, but the canvas does accumulate dirt and lint from the air when it's left uncovered. This causes it to lose its tack over time. I don't usually get up without covering my working section back up. :)
Silly question but after you complete a section do you cut the cover off completely as you move to the next section? So the drills are just exposed in that completed area?
You can't use reynolds non stick parchment paper, or all "release paper" you need silicone covered parchment paper, and the only place i could find it was a craft store!!!

I have had good luck with baby wipes. It helps to bring back the sticky. There is also Aleene’s Tacky Glue that you can put down in small sections and place the drills. Also, Diamond Dotz has a glue especially for diamond painting.
I suggest Dotz Stick from Diamond Dotz for poured glue canvases. 😀 It is basically a small container of poured glue. 😀
What happens if you don’t cover it back up? Is there some time guidelines on that? 🧐
I don't think there's a timeline per se, but the canvas does accumulate dirt and lint from the air when it's left uncovered. This causes it to lose its tack over time. I don't usually get up without covering my working section back up. :)
freezer paper works well too cuz
one side is non stiick and its cheaper than wax paper and non stick paper
That's awesome! I can see myself putting the wrong side down, but with careful attention I can see how that would be a great option!
I love your idea of cutting down the center of the tape. I hate how ragged the edge of the cut plastic cover is, no matter WHAT you do.
I totally agree! They have minds of their own!! 😂
Silly question but after you complete a section do you cut the cover off completely as you move to the next section? So the drills are just exposed in that completed area?
That's what I do, yes. :)
You can't use reynolds non stick parchment paper, or all "release paper" you need silicone covered parchment paper, and the only place i could find it was a craft store!!!
Hmm, interesting. I have definitely used Reynolds non-stick parchment paper without any issues. 🤔 🤷🏻♀️
Lol my first cover sheet I tried cutting into sections, what a disaster!!
Me too! Epic fail!! 🤣🤣🤣
I just section off with a marker. The tape is just too pretty and expensive to waste.
