You know I always wanted a Beatle, from the first time I saw one in Bowman ND back in 1965. Well in about 75 I started to deal on one down in El Paso Texas at a fly by night car dealer just off base from Fort Bliss. I took her for a test drive, I think it was a "Super Beatle" the way the guy talked anyhow, and she did run out like a dream, my wonderful wife even liked it. Then We got back from the 10 or 12 block test drive, and I parked her back on line. I opened the back hood and looked at the engine, there was oil flowing from that cooler, at the time I had no idea what the hell it even was and I don't think the salesman did either. He made some excuse about the car sitting still for so long and told me the leak would go away with driving. I didn't buy the explanation, and I didn't buy the car either. I went to another dealer and purchased an Opel Manta, never did regret my decision, that little baby blue Opel was indeed my dream car, and later, when my wonderful wife got her drivers license, her first car was a puke green Opel Manta 1900. I did a valve job on a set of heads for my girlfriends camaro a few months back, blown head gasket, the intake valves had small pits. Just sanded the pits while it was in a drill and brought it up to a worn out 220 grit to eliminate stress risers
I can smell the hot engine/burning paint/chemical offgassing right through the screen. Done this many times, and it is very gratifying to hear them idle down and run smooth. Hey, just a little tip when taking out the valves. If you lay the head down on the workbench take a socket and place it over the valve spring caps. Take a big hammer and give it a good whack. May take a couple of wacks but the retainers should pop right out. If you get used to this it takes like 2 mins to take all the valves out.
@@steveb6103 For mounting the valves you will need that tool. And for taking them out its not the 'wrong' way. Im just saying its a lot faster to just whack em out with a socket.

That hot water tip is gold. I tried everything to get those tubes for my motorcycle carburetor into a shape I can work with. Seems like all the tips on the internet to renew rubber are bullcrap. Merry Belated Christmas Mustie!!!
Awesome engine project! Boy, she sounds great. Nice job Mustie1!
No anti-climaxes here. That motor is insanely beautiful. Soon be driving the special into open air.
Honestly, I expected the motor to give him a bit of a harder time but I was tripping over my jaw when I saw if fire right up ! Way to go Mustie1 ! That was awesome !
Mustie talking about the suction cup: "this thing sucks".
he should have said: "this thing blows".
Good catch! Merry Christmas!!
He only wished it did, that was the problem it didn't suck 😁
if a vacuum really sucks is it good or bad?
Tried it dry then licked it...😏
Superb video Mustie! Can't wait for further installments!
20:05 Was that valves on vise "JIngle Bells" you were playing? Nice seasonal touch! It's these details that make your channel so popular! Thanks!
Heard the same thing here.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you would put one drop of oil in your valve grinding compound on the valve face it well do much better.
Was about to make this same comment.
Heard Jingle Bells, too! :)
Thanks for showing most of your steps in real time. I have never worked on an engine and I have always been interested. So for me this is fascinating.
Being a Chevy guy. Don’t judge me...
That thermostats was way cool to me! 🤪
I love how you explain the differences you note between the VW and Porsche engines.
It’s a pretty tight I bet. It would explain the difficulty some of the starters we’re having
That hot water tip is gold. I tried everything to get those tubes for my motorcycle carburetor into a shape I can work with. Seems like all the tips on the internet to renew rubber are bullcrap. Leaving them in hot water until when you actually need to work with them seems to be the absolute best you can do (other than replacing them).
You are the motor man, any motor, great job Mustie!!!!
Replacement seals a different colour - I’ve met that on Mercedes and BMW. It’s to tell you they have been replaced in the past.
That was great, what a return on my hour and 21 minute investment. Loved it! SOUNDS AWESOME!
Classic: puts fuel in it, triggers the starter and it bursts immediately into life, and Mustie chuckles.
I wait for the start up laugh
He never misses a first start laugh. Sometimes just a chuckle for a kick or a back fire.
there's something with old engines that modern stuff just won't give you.
Been fun; been educational.
Eagerly awaiting the next installment.
