Toyota didn't even try enough to make the redesigned Corolla to have a better rating for the small offset crash test. All they did was just add a knee airbag, instead of improving the structure. They should have turned to Honda for help, since their Civic is Top Safety Pick +.

Honestly what is the probability of a small offset accident? Some people think that it is a pointless more costly test. The most accidents are going to be head on collisions, and Toyota's generally have 5 stars all around.

And I'm sorry but just under $20K for a nicely-equipped new Corolla is still $3,000 too much. Buyers looking for cars in that segment of the market are not going to drop JUST under $20K for a compact car.

I still don't think it's as good as the Cruze, the Corolla was obviously slightly updated for 2017, but I had a Cruze for quite a while (2017) and I averaged 39 mpg and with cruise set to 55 mph on my way to work I averaged almost 50 mpg not even kidding, though I wouldn't mind test driving a new corolla .. it may surprise me.

    • @jshepard152

A Corolla will outlast 2-3 Cruzes. It's also been in continuous production since 1966. The General can't keep anything going for very long. Hit and miss, hit and miss. Here we are two years later and the Cruze is...canceled.

Still doesn't change the fact it's an appliance. A better looking appliance, but with identical power-trains, unchanged suspensions & mechanical, the Corolla will still be the go-to choice for those not interested in cars.

I'm sad the 3 isn't as selling as well despite all the accolades that it did win over the Corolla. But because of the same reason, I'm much happier when that 1 of 10 person decided to get a 3 or Focus over another Corolla.
I did however never said the Corolla was a bad car. It is well equipped, cheap to buy & run, reliable and a decent commuter. If that's all you look for in a car, then I have no qualms.

I really wish these Car enthusiast, as they call themselves, would focus their reviews solely on sport cars. They do a horrible job on this car segment.
I have been watching multiple reviews this last year, mainly on the compact car segment. Most of these reviews bash the Toyota Corolla over and over again. These “car enthusiast” claim the Toyota is a crappy car because it is underpowered and doesn’t have sharp handling. I find this so ignorant, considering you are NOT going to find sport cars in this Segment. This Compact car segment is marketed to people who want a safe commute and do not have the resources to get a higher-end car. I will never go to McDonalds to find high quality food. It’s just plain stupid. They compare The Mazda3 to Toyota as if it was Olive Garden compared to Burger King, once again just plain stupid.
I recently traded my car for a 2015 Toyota Corolla and couldn’t be happier.
This segment is a cheap car segment PERIOD. You will not find anything close to Sport Car. Sure some cars may have BETTER performance…but still not anywhere close to sports Cars. The Mazda3 is farrrrr closer to the Toyota/Civic/Forte than it will ever be to a BMW. What these idiot Car enthusiast can’t seem to get through their heads, is that 95% of people aren’t buying these cars to RACE. THIS IS NOT THE SEGMENT FOR IT. These are cheap cars made to go from point A to point B.
Here’s a list of what consumers look for in these cars, or should look for.
    1. Reliability
    2. Price
    3. Fuel Economy
    4. Comfort
    5. Style
    6. Space (Interior and Cargo Space)
Sorry folks, high performance is not something people should be looking at in this segment, hence once again these cars are not made for that.
Now here’s my PERSONAL view on these cars, trying not to be biased.
Corolla: Overall my favorite and most complete car. The pre 2014 Corolla’s were lacking in technology and style but this new generation really packs a punch. The car is now Beautiful and Stylish. The Interior is very well laid and the S trim (which I have) feels very premium compared to previous generations. What I most love about this car and what makes it my top contender is the huge amount of space in the interior. THERE IS A LOT OF SPACE IN THIS CAR. The Legroom is out of this world (in fact more legroom than the AVALON). It has great fuel efficiency and plenty of technology all for under $20,000. These reviews claim the car is slow, yet hardly anybody has mentioned the sport mode it has. With the push of a Sport Mode button, the car shifts to higher RPMS and Accelerates faster than any compact car in the segment. The paddle shifters increase the effect. 132 hp is all this car really needs. Super reliable and high resale value. There are minor things it could improve on, like soft touch materials in some places but very minor.
Honda Civic: Another good contender, with plenty of technology. Not my definition of beauty but very reliable just like the Corolla. Much smaller interior than the Corolla. Also has a high resale value.
Hundye Elantra/Kia Forte: These cousins are also good cars and good value for your money. While they are both spacious, the Elantra has a tight back seat. The Forte has a lot of gadgets. The Elantra is much more stylish than the Forte.
Mazda3: Good looking front end, not a big fan of the back, but still very stylish. Impressive fuel economy…on paper. The problem with this car, is PRICE, SPACE and COMFORT. The base model is very basic. My friend got himself the Sport trim and I was not impressed. The car has a tight interior, the backseat was very uncomfortable and while the materials on the dash were good, I was not impressed. If you really want to enjoy the Mazda3 you need to spend about $26k+ which……defeats the purpose. If you’re to spend that much on the higher trims, might as well buy a Mazda 6. Performance is better than the rest, but one again it is not what I am looking for in this segment. I wouldn’t buy this car unless, I felt like racing people.
Ford Focus: Outdated, Small and Ugly. The only positive is the 160hp it has and better handling. Would never buy this car.
    My list:
    Corolla (S trim)
    Forte
    Civic
    Elantra
    Mazda3
    Focus
You take away the slightly better performance and the Mazda3 and Focus lose a lot of their appeal.

    • @davidlyday7373
      @davidlyday7373 8 років тому

+minel56 I understand that car reviewers shouldn't pretend compacts compete against a corvette but I do think there is a gradient of sporty and luxury refinement. A car can be good or bad independent of its badge, for example the Mercedes Benz CLA is outclassed by an Accord or Passat, and realistically most Acura products aren't as compelling as there Honda counterparts. Vehicles cover an entire spectrum of reliability comfort and fuel economy. Personally I'm not very fond of the Corolla because vehicles like the VW Jetta SE, Honda Civic EX and Mazda 3 i Touring all are faster more powerful and more efficient for the price of a Toyota Corolla LE Premium. Although I must admit a lightly used Corolla is a far better value for the dollar than it's competitors.

All you fanboys tapping away on your computer in mom's basement make me laugh. Who looks to a Corolla, Civic, Focus, Mazda 323 etc for driving excitement? Come on....really?
The Corolla is and always has been a wonderful car. This new Corolla is just that much better. Exactly what the people who buy them are looking for.
Get a life; if you want real excitement buy a vehicle designed for that. I have a 40 yr old K900 Kawasaki in my garage that you may want to wrap your throttle hand around. If yo can handle that is.....

Show your stuff guinmaan and swear up a store. Some people like Corollas, as evidenced by their sales numbers. I have no use for a Corolla or a Civic or a Focus. Just don't pretend like a Focus is so exciting to drive; it's no different than a Corolla, other than the Corolla will last longer.

  • @MemphisMojo15s

Seriously, it's ugly. Say it and you'll feel better. It looks like the rest and it's therefore not unique like each car should be. The 1.8 engine may be reliable but it's so yesterday's news and so down on power that it's horrible. I guess you can't have everything. This is the worst one yet and apparently CR has no clue how to review cars.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 9 років тому +1

Agreed. Common as trees or grass, lifeless steering, uninspiring engine note...
It's more of an appliance (like a washing machine) than a car; it does it's job well of ferrying non-driving enthusiasts around, but for car lovers there are better options.
P.S. At least the Cruze has a 2.0 Diesel engine & a 1.4 turbo motor to make it more interesting.
