“Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …).
When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and composed the music in a couple of hours.
The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes.
Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version.
She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet during his own Paris concert in January 1995. It was a triumph. So he sat in a front row seat and asked her to sing it again alone.
Lara also had made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power. Serge and Lara became good friends and performed several other duets later on.

is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.
Lara is used to perform the song very differently in each of her tour and for instance the En Toute Intimité, 2003, Paris Olympia version is even more dramatic

Lara Fabian with the song Caruso is a great song to react to. Je Suis Malade means I am sick (lovesickness) and she doesn't know how to deal with that problem

Possibly her most famous video is one where she is barely allowed to sing. Je t'aime Live In Paris 2001 Her piano player worked with the audience to serenade her to show appreciation and love to her (Je t'aime/I love you) As the music begins and suddenly stops she is confused, but then the audience begins to sing the song to her, leaving her emotionally overwhelmed and ecstatic. I have not yet seen a reactor not end up crying by the end. She began in Canada about the same time as Celine Dion and due to record company politics she was restraining from growing in USA so instead became huge in Canada and Europe. I have always thought she was the much better of the two. You really should watch her songs with closed captions for the French or Italian lyrics, but also with translation to see the English meaning as the words explain many of the feelings she portrays so well.
One recommendation is that for any song in a foreign language that you find either a version with English subtitles or click on closed captioning. This song is one of the most emotionally charged songs of all time. There was nothing "sweet" about it. I suggest you watch this version to understand what the song is all about to truly appreciate Lara's genius and ability to imbue a song with genuine emotion and make a cover sound like she lived and wrote that song herself!
