At the time of my youth, in Russia, this song by Lara Fabian became an anthem of separation and unrequited love. One of the hymns. For us, Russians, French seems to be a very beautiful language. The language of love) But we also love performers who are able to convey the mood not only with their voice. Sincere. That's why we still love Lara Fabian and Patricia Kaas so much. I still often listen to Mireille Mathieu. She is simply divine. Even her songs in German are just something majestic. They're all gorgeous and surprisingly emotional. It's beautiful, feminine..
    Thanks for the reaction, Jesse.

When you are a master, you are a master. And she definitely is. Master of vocals, singing technique, expressions, emotions, everything. Then you can live the song while singing, pour your soul into it and still the vocals are just perfect. And when adding the most gorgeous, the most beautiful and powerful voice...this is the result.
It is still one of the best live vocal performances ever. By anyone.

“Je suis Malade” was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …).
When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours.
The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes.
Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, but a few months after, Dalida covered it and brought it to fame. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends.
Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations.
This 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal) is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
The most recent one I am aware of is from the Korean band Forestella.

    More information on Lara Fabian:
Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, ....
In my personal opinion, she is even the best.
There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register.
So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence:
    • she speaks 4 languages fluently (french, italian, english, spanish) and has sung in 12 languages in total
    • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for most her songs, in the 4 languages she speaks. She often co-composes the music with the composer.
    • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none
    • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens.
A quick background on her and her career:
She is belgian, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia). She was raised in both countries so she speaks both french and italian as native languages.
She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory.
She is still having vocal lessons and training several times a week today.
She started her career in Canada in the early 90s, more precisely in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada.
She now lives in Montreal and has also Canadian citizenship
She became very famous there and then conquered France in 1997 (she topped charts there and some of her songs such as "Je t'aime" or "Tout" became classics of the french music).
In 2000, she was about to penetrate the US Market, with a lot of media initial interest. Her first english song (I will love again), a pop dance song, reached number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US.
This concert is legendary and the song you just reviewed is from this concert.
But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan.
She thus refocused back on Europe and made huge success there, extending her reach to Eastern Europe and Central Asia where she became an absolute superstar thru her collaboration with Igor Krutoy during several years.
She is also a star in Brazil as her song "Love By Grace" used as the soundtrack for a very famous soap opera topped the charts for months.
Many of her songs became classics and were covered by the other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban, …
With her success in Europe, Brazil and part of Asia, she is the inspiration of the new generation of vocalists: most of them are coming from there.
Thru their covers of Lara Fabian songs, USA and many other countries are now rediscovering her.
She is Dimash's idol: I’ve read somewhere that, when he was a child, he was listening her songs every night to get asleep.
He covered many of her songs (that she performed originally ; she also wrote some of these).
Out of my mind I can list:
    ○ Adagio,
    ○ Mademoiselle Hyde,
    ○ Know,
    ○ Love of tired swans
She also wrote the lyrics of his song « Your Love ».
And she covered « Love is like a dream » before him (song from Igor Krutoy originally performed by Alla Pugacheva).
They also performed Ti Amo Cosi together with Aida Garafulina: this is a song that she performed originally with Dmitriy Hvorostovsky and Alina Yaroyava then again later with Dmitriy and Sumi Jo, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida.
Dimash is now also working with Igor Krutoy who came back from retirement and composed severals songs for him.
Many other top vocalists from the current generation covered her songs:
    ○ Floor Jansen (Adagio),
    ○ Polina Gagarina (Adagio, Je t’aime),
    ○ Diana Ankudinova (Tomorrow is a lie),
    ○ Morissette Amon (Broken Vow),
    ○ Gabriel Henrique (Love by Grace),
    ○ Cakra Khan (Broken Vow),
    ○ Katrina Velarde (Broken Vow),
    ○ Laura Bretan ( Adagio, Caruso),
    ○ Jackie Evancho (Je t’aime, Caruso and Broken Vow, BV rewritten as « Imaginer » by Lara for Jackie),
    ○ Giulia Falcone (Adagio, Caruso, Je suis malade),
    ○ Almira (from 4th Impact band) (Broken Vow),
    ○ Forestella (Je suis Malade),
    ○ ....
Sorry if I was long, but I hope this gives some context on Lara.

Lara thoroughly inhabits the story line of each song but that doesn't mean she's 'running on automatic'. There is micro-intentionality in each and every note and every breath between, all of the nuances of timing and every physical gesture. Every one of Lara's performances is a Master Class. 😃👍
    Nb.
You made me laugh about flunking French. I too flunked French in High School but my consolation was that 95% of my class also flunked French! Our teacher was a pompous much decorated academic who had no teaching skills. He was fired at the end of the year. 😆 Here in Australia it didn't really affect any of us much. It was not as if we had a land border with France that we transited / visited regularly! I think it was a push by the Education Dept. here to try to turn us 'Colonists' from English Speaking 'isolationists' on our island Continent into into multi-lingual international citizens.
There was much debate/push back at the time about a very dated habit of referring to England as 'The Home Country' and FINALLY paying attention to where we were Geographically! Many suggested schools should be teaching languages like Indonesian, and Japanese and Chinese [ Mandarin ] as these countries were becoming increasingly important trading partners.
    # My parents BTW were Dutch Migrants arriving here in the early 1950's.
So when, in Primary School, we children were all required to stand up at Assembly and Sing "God Save The [ English ] Queen" - I distinguished myself by sitting down. When I was challenged I explained; 'Well, but that's not 'my Queen'! My parents come from Holland, so we have our own Queen"! And we live here now -so why should i sing to HER either!?" 🤔
Even then I though it was just ridiculous that these kids, who's grand parents, and even great great grandparents, had never been to the UK, and the closest they'd ever got to the British Queen was a postage stamp or a coin in their pockets, should be singing to the English Queen right over on the other side of the world! So, I guess I was a Republican even then. But I was told by my teachers & my family, to "Shut up! and Stand up and sing and Not make trouble! and Try to fit in!" Instructions I have occasionally attempted, with varying success, over subsequent decades! 😆🤣

haha this i love! The trip down memorylane, just by me stating something about flunking french haha. I also think a bunch of migrants these day are coming from those parts of asia right? Not just the trading partners anymore.. Guess Chinese is never a bad idea when it comes to trading. The God Save the Queen story though haha Such an interesting path with so many people migrating so far away. Everybody/kid getting a little bit of extra history from their families.

@@JesseReacts I went to the Netherlands when I was 20 and then met all my relatives for the first time. It was interesting. My Aunt, who's house I spend 1/2 my childhood in growing up, came from a family of Dutch missionaries to Indonesia [ Java ] So I was raised on Nasi Goreng & Sambal Sauce etc.It was interesting to compare the kind of Colonial Influences that had fed back into Dutch [ Home Country ] society in food and spices etc. I still like to freak out people selling Hot Chips in street vans here when I ask for Sate Sauce. Ha Ha Ha.. 😆😂

@@JesseReacts Oh and China... Not the flavour of the month here any more. Australia disregarded the old wisdom of 'Not placing all your eggs in one basket" - or should I say; "Not placing your Gonads into your enemies hand!" and we allowed / encouraged China became the primary purchaser of much of our produce - hence the major contributor to our total GDP / Economy. { Ie: our Mining Industry (Iron ore) -Wine Industry - Seafood industry - Dairy Industry. the list goes on and on.) Predictably - in the global political environment - when Australia has stood up with the USA & many other International 'partners' to condemn China's human rights abuses and expansionist activities in the South China Sea and other regions - That hand has now become a FIST! Squeezing tightly - Abruptly closing the door to the bulk of imports from Australia; devastating whole industries overnight, Australian Politicians and Industry leaders are squealing -Loudly! and now frantically looking for replacement markets for surpluses elsewhere.

Great reaction I subscribed and hope to see more reaction to her songs.
Always go for her live perfs, she is always better there than in studio.
The recording was late 1999 and was released early 2000. Yes, she also has some other songs exposing more of her insane vocal skills but this one is a masterpieceof interpretation.
I will send more details on this song and her background on separate comments.

Greatest solo performance of this song ever. But now I am going to turn you and you audience / subscriber base to the best rendition of this song by a harmony group that will blow your mind! They go by the name “ forestella”
a 4 male crossover harmony group from South Korea. When they performed their first song “ Bohemian Rhapsody” it catapulted them to international stardom and they now have millions of followers worldwide. One of the Korean vocalists has a very deep bass/baritone voice. Another, a high operatic voice, and the other two group members (who are also solo performers) together perform a confluence of total emotional impact and passion and performed live on stage in front of thousands of their fans. Trust me, this will become one of your all-time favorites. Some of their other songs I recommend are Simon & Garfunkel classic “The Sound Of Silence”, Guardian “ Angel” that will lift your spirits and transport you to another world-especially during these troubled covid times.
I’ve watched “ji suis malade” 5 times and each and every time it moved me to the depths of my core!
    You will thank me!!!

    Hi Jesse.
Thanks for a great reaction to Lara Fabian ❤
You can not make everyone happy, react the way you want, those who like it get stuck otherwise they have to find someone else to follow.
Adagio is a good next song to react to.
I would now suggest that you react to Perdere l'amore, one of my absolute favorites with Lara, because you gesture so much to her song.
