  • Here is my Lara Fabian reaction to the song "Je Suis Malade". I am not exactly sure where this video was taken, but it seems to be from a liveshow in 1999.

I love this performance. Never thought a song could hurt me that much. Thanks for the reaction, Lara definitely needs to be known more. Glad I found her through Dimash. He is a big fan of her and sang some of her songs. They did a performance together too, along with Aida, another amazing singer.
If you want to hear more of Lara, I recommend Adagio, Broken Vow, Je T'aime, Mademoiselle Hyde and You're Not From Here.

As someone said, Je Suis Malade was written by Frenchman Serge Lama in the 80s, and was about his own ( male) experience), It was then, famously interpreted by Dalida, an Egypto-French singer, who made it "her" definitive version. She later tragically committed suicide ( not after singing this song, I hasten to add!). The Lara took it on, created a version, which so far, no-one has succeeded in topping for sheer emotion and technique. Lara has become recognized for her "emoting" style. She took her "Caruso" (Lucio Dalla's 1986 composition) from the same concert out of the hands of operatic male singers like Pavarotti, and revolutionized this song.. No-one has performed it better since. "Broken Vow" and "Adagio" are other remarkable performances. Her career of course has continued since those songs for another twenty years. To see how she is more recently, see her live performance of Llora ( 2014). To see how she can express without even using words, see her "Vocalise" (2014 also I think) which she sang in Russia. Vocalise was the precursor of Dimash's "Ascolta La Voce" and "Know" and much more delicate and pitch-perfect. There is much to say about Lara and her performing, Suffice to say that two decades after this performance of Je Suis Malade, she is still one of the most accomplished performers on the world scene. p.s. You should know that her own role model since her early teens has been Barbra Streisand.

Lara Fabian was born in Belgium of a Belgian father and a Sicilian mother. She spent her childhood in Sicily with her mother. Then she went to school in the UK, returning to Belgium to study classical voice techniques at the conservatory.
In her 20s she moved to Quebec Canada where she worked for nine years until her break though.
Lara speaks four languages: English, French, Italian and Spanish. Her voice is classified as a Lyric Soprano. In her vocal tool box is a singing technique called "The Ring".
The human singing voice has two primary resonating chambers, the chest and the head. When singers belt a high note it is usually with chest voice - chest belting. What Lara Fabian does while chest belting her high notes is she mixes chest and head producing a clearer sound with a ringing quality.
Any song Lara Fabian sings, she gets to the emotional core of the story the song is about. For years I thought Lara Fabian wrote "Je suis malade" until I learned that Serge Lama is the songwriter. If you dig around you will find a video of Serge Lama and Lara Fabian singing "Je suis malade" as a duet. But what has totally blown me away is a video of Lara in her 20s singing the Aria from "La Traviata" on a TV show in Mexico. It is a pure gem!

It should be noted that the text was originally written by Serge Lama and summarizes his own story with this song: I am sick is doubly autobiographical for the singer-songwriter (originally) who included in this story of desperate love of the feelings of a rather unhappy childhood.

I'm coming a little late. Everything was said. I can only enjoy the game of comparison. So let's say that the original from Serge Lama is not as good as Lara's version, and this Lara's performance "less good" than her Adagio. Her Adagio is absolutely unique and incredible.
And since I'm French (mais oui, Monsieur) and I could see some interviews in French, I will add, for the record, that Lara and Dimash are not only bound by Adagio and some other songs, but also by a mysterious woman... Suspense !
    ...
Without her, Dimash would still be a Kazakh singer unknown to the rest of the world. Many don't know this, or downplay it. Yet, in our timeline, it's a fact : without Laure... no Dimash !
Laure Shang (her Western name) or Shang Wenjie (her Chinese name - she's from Shanghai) had fallen in love with French language as a child. She studied it and graduated. For fun she participated in a singing contest and, overnight, was trapped in show business, without training or preparation. Loving solitude and tranquility, she suffered from her success for three years, before accepting her fate. That's how she became a singer.
Singing a lot in French, she came to France and Belgium where she met Lara Fabian and sang with her (10 years ago)
    .
Laure and Lara - J'y crois encore
    ua-cam.com/video/NCskc_4HLZc/v-deo.html
Very involved in fashion, she was called "the Chinese Lady Gaga". In fact Wenjie (or Laure) had more fans in China than Lady Gaga around the world. Laure is a huge star in China.
In 2015 she became a businesswoman, producing young talents. After a year of fruitless mistakes, she became a very good producer... and took charge of some young artists to make them stars. One of them came from Kazakhstan : Dimash.

So it's likely that it was Laure who made Dimash known to Lara (I suppose).

Salut Goofster. Great reaction. I am not French, so let me say: Hallo from Germany :).
Je suis malade was first sung by some dudes (Serge Lama f.e.) and then Dalida (very successfully) picked it up.
Later on, Lara Fabian (in my opinion one of the greatest female performers of the musical arts, of all time) took the song to her heart.
Dimash (you know Dimash, do you) considers Lara as one of his muses, and Igor Krutoy, one of the best composers of our time, works/worked with Dimash, Lara and f.e. Diana Ankudinova.

In fact, it's like a poem song relative to a sad story... I saw you had understood wrongly a point and with my little knowledge of english (I'm French), I will try to explain it... she didn't say she was dirty like an orphan... it's in fact 2 different verses of the poem... in the precedent verse, she says she feels dirty because "he" has left her... then she try to give how she was bad in the following verse, she feels like an orphan (abandonned) in a dormitory... but yes, the song is very very emotional.

and there are 2 mistakes in the translation : the first one, when she said "je crèverai" it does mean a far stronger way to die than I will die... it could be translated by I shall burst to die or I'll burst to die... the second wrong translation is that many french words has several meanings (some can have very very different meaning, that makes french a bit harsh for foreigner, and I apologise for it... then she use the word "la peau" ... literally, la peau is "the skin" but not in this song... another meaning of "la peau" is "the Life"... like ... "je voulais m'enfuir de là pour sauver ma peau" ... I wanted to runaway from here to save my life... in this poem it's even more difficult cause it's a metaphore, and a very subtle one... i the song that means in fact something like She believed she's got talent before she met him...

@@jpc7118 You're all right, and even "malade" is broader than just "sick" in French since we also easily use it for meaning of broken heart (malade d'amour, maladie d'amour...) or more psychological reasons than in most other languages.

    • @jpc7118
      @jpc7118 4 роки тому

@@steph7793 yes, in the song, Alice Donna, in purpose, used "Malade" because of the 2 (or even 3) meanings in the same time : she is in pain because she has been left, hurted, and she has been affected mindly (like the way she songs " c'est ça" in the last tirade)... Originally, it was a song written for a man, but nowadays, it can be for both genders ;) in the seventies, french society was far more "macho", like most of Latin countries... This song is very very deep, deeper than many other songs... Vy the way, I was looking at the version Serge Lama did in 1975 I think, it was a good one too... I prefer both Lama and Fabian versions (many of the versions Lara did were great, even if I prefer the one in Montreal 1999 ... it's all about tastes), than the others did by many singer (even Dalida one is not at the same level)...

for french speakers, it's not sweet at all. it sound she's whispering sadness, almost crying, desperate, angry, dramatic, tragic, on the point of dying... but not sweet at all. May be just an effect of the french language if you don't understand its tonality. She really makes the mood of the lyrics passing thru her voice and body. She sings in several language for others songs, italian and english for instance. May be you'll feel easier with a english song (Adagio, Broken vow).
