I'm French and although she's got a good vocal ability, this song remains cheesy, at 1st sung by another guy caleld Serge Lama. During the 70's all the french music was like that, denying the existence of other musics like Pink Floyd or King Crimson or Led Zeppelin. I was a 4 years old kid in 1972 and it sounded so borring because it was almost the only musical style to be listened to !

This is so true!
Sony records wanted to change her for her to become like the “other ones” but she refused. That shows how of a true and honest person she is to herself. For me, even though I’m a Québécoise, I truly think that she’s way above Celine Dion and I also know now that since Lara is more on the web now, that could be dangerous for Celine. Especially that Celine hates Lara‘s guts! I have watched a documentary about people who were working at Sony records and they were talking about Lara’s journey and this guy said so. It is not that I don’t like Celine, but there is a saying in French that says let's give Caesar what is Cesar's. Lara is making her way to the top right now and this is just what she deserves 💕

Also, that saying about Caesar is in many languages, "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's" because it is from the Bible and so most countries that were/are "Christian" countries will have a similar saying. It is probably used more in French, though. More than in English, at least.

Been a fan of Lara for over 20 years now, and I really enjoy the reaction when people hear and see how she puts emotion into the song like no other artist I have seen in my 62 years. Also WATCH her at the very end, she is visibly shaking from the emotion and the feeling she gets when she puts herself "into" the song, no, she actually becomes the song. WATCH!!! Her head shakes a bit from side to side, as she is trying to regain her composure, she is not even yet able to react to the audience clapping. I'm sure her adrenaline is thru the roof at this point. I've watched and re-watched Lara hundreds of times, it never gets old for me.

When she performed that song during her “En toute intimité” concert, for that last chorus, Lara was completely alone on stage (her pianist left) and she ended up crumbling down on the floor at the end of the final note. Breathtaking!

When the song was written, Lara Fabian was only 3 years old.
Je suis malade is a song by Serge Lama, released in 1973 as a single and on the album Je suis malade. Written by Serge Lama on a music composed by Alice Dona, the song became the most emblematic title of the repertoire of Serge Lama who regularly takes it on stage 3.
History
The song Je suis malade was inspired by a real heartbreak of Serge Lama, the story of a long secret relationship.
In 1969, the singer met Michèle Potier in Chamonix. Love was a certainty, but neither of them was free: he had married Daisy Brun, his press agent, in 1968, and she was married and had a son. They love each other in secret for several years and promise to regain their freedom, but Michèle hesitates and finally flees him and settles in Morocco for professional reasons. Lama is desperate, he wants to put words on his pain without succeeding, until the day he confides in his friend Alice Dona: "this story hurts me, it makes me sick. Back home, at the piano, Alice Dona, composes in a few hours a melody [...], that very quickly, she makes the singer listen. It was a revelation and Serge Lama wrote almost the entire text in one go. He will say later "The 80% of the song I wrote in 20 minutes, it's almost a shame [...] it came out of my heart so much that I [...] immediately felt that this song had something that the others didn't have".
However, nothing is done. His record company Philips does not believe in the song and to impose it Lama threatens to leave if he is refused to record it3. He wins his case and soon Je suis malade is released as a single. Unfortunately, the radio programmers prefer the B side, the lively and cheerful song Les P'tites Femmes de Pigalle which becomes a hit6. At every opportunity, however, Lama sings Je suis malade, on television, on stage [...], recognition will come, not (in this period), through him, but from a cover by Dalida very touched by the subject of the song and whose inspired and desperate interpretation will seduce the public.
After that, Serge Lama's popularity was turned upside down and he definitely became a recognized and popular singer-songwriter4. Many years later, the artist confides: "An LP of Serge Lama at the time it was worth 4000-5000 albums [...] But after Les Ballons rougesNote 1 it is 1 million4."
Recognition came for the creator of Je suis malade, in 1974, when one evening on the stage of the Olympia in Paris, Serge Lama completed the song by interpreting it without a microphone a cappella in front of an audience conquered by a triumph.
Another happiness, the return of Michele, free and together, they give birth to a boy named Frederic in 1981 and marry ten years later8. Michèle died in 2016 at 71 years, victim of a stroke9. Her death gives the song another dimension, Lama who has not given up singing it on stage says: "Every night when this song comes, I know it is an obstacle that must be jumped [...], it usually takes me a minute to recover [...], this song deserves to be given everything".

Je suis malade is doubly autobiographical for the singer-songwriter who includes in this story of desperate love feelings from his childhood. The anger, the suffering that Serge Lama expresses with the verses "I am sick as when my mother went out in the evening, And that she left me alone with my despair" or "I am like an orphan in a dormitory". These words to the attention of his lover to whom he reproaches his decline, it is in fact to his mother that he addresses them, casting himself in the skin of his father, formerly a singer of operetta in search of success, who, pushed by his wife, gave up his career [...]. I'm 44 and I know this song since I was a kid. The original singer's called Serge Lama and the way he sang was absolutly awesome.
But Lara....wahhhh...as I said to many friends of mine, she's got one of the most beautyfull voice of the world and surely one (my be the one) of the most powerfull voice of the world.
I saw her live (yes, french metal heads go to see non metal concerts sometimes ^^) and she made me cry by singing "Je suis malade"...that performance is absolutly outstanding, she is incredibly awesome (you can see she is possessed when she sings).
That was the 1rst time I was crying by listening someone singing (and I'm not sure I've been crying again by listening a song).
Lara singing this kind of song is just like a knife stabing your heart and soul.
I think you should listen to Lara singing with Maurane "tu es mon autre" and let me know what you think.

I just want to say how interesting is how people all around the world has just discovered Lara Fabian in 2020/2021, since she is VERY FAMOUS in France (top 10 best selling artist there), in Canada she is HUGE among Shania Twain and Celine Dion (Lara is a winner of hundreds of awards there), she is also the greatest selling and awarded artist in Belgium (where she was born). Lara actually is fluently in 5 languages, composes her songs in many languages as well. She has already recorded in 12 languages and sang live in all of them. Lara has more than 10 years of tranning in the Royal Conservatory of Belgium (she studied there from 8 to 18 years), also she never stopped having vocal (bel canto/erudict) classes since then, she is very professional and confident in evrything she does. She has been singing this profrssionally since 1988 (over 30 years and she keeps the same stamine and emotion), her very first song was released in 1985. When she sits and plays piano, many songs just comes out her mind and heart. Such a talented woman. When she travels to Italy she only speaks in Italian, in Canada she speaks in French and English, in Latin America she speaks perfectly Spanish as a native. She is almost a genius, also she is able to switch languages easily, like she uses to give interviews in 2 or 3 languages at the same time, the same when she is composing and singing live, she has many bi/tri lingual songs. I'm 31 and I Just met her 21 years ago, what you just watched here is nothing compared to what she uses to do in every concert since 1988. Even a Happy Birthday sang by hers is emotional and sounds crystal clear. She also holds notes from C5 to Eb5 over 17 seconds using perfect resonance and support in chest/mixed voice. Her vocal range live goes from D3 to G6 with perfect support. Also she composes 90% of her songs in 4 languages. When singing Lara can reach your eyes even if the camera is dar away from ver, she look at you behind the camera, it's amazing! She Lerned from the best erudict teachers from Belgium and Italy. Because, it is so much fun knowing they have no idea what they are about to see and listen to! When I see Lara's name pop up I know a reactor is not going to be ready to understand what is about to happen to them. Such is the case with you! I loved your reaction. There wasn't much to say. Our emotions say it all. Tauri, these video's of Lara are from 20 years ago and she should have been recognized as one of the greatest singers in the world. Oh, anybody that hears her can figure that out but so many people never heard her and she was never properly promoted back then. I believe noone could deliver the desperation and pain Serge Lama wanted to express when he wrote the song better than Lara Fabian. She sings with her heart and her soul, she has a unique way to become the song and deliver emotions, every song is a journey, this is the reason why her fans love her so much. Everybody agree that her live performances are the best version of her songs. She is also the writer to a lot of her songs.

Unfortunately, she was not lucky enough to have the same manager as Celine Dion who also comes from here. it's a shame that you're starting to know her, she's a singer who has the ability to get under the skin of her songs and she speaks several languages. For many like me, it is she who should have had Celine's place. luckily, she is worshiped here and in Europe. Etant Français je ne serais surement pas objectif. Comme la première fois que j'ai entendu cette chanson interprété par son Auteur Monsieur Serge Lama en 1973 cette chanson qui a été écrite pour un homme qui se retrouve seul peut comme Madame Lara Fabian le fait si bien être interprété par une femme. Mais plus encore cette chanson nous renvoie à notre solitude quand on se rends compte que malgré le nombre d'ami que l'on a on reste toujours seul quoi que l'on fasse. J'adore cette chanson. C'est le genre de chanson ou si l'interprète n'est pas habité par ce qu'il chante ce la ne peut fonctionner car chaque mots compte ainsi que sa façon de les interpréter, de le prononcé. This song- this performance levels me every single time. I was in an extremely toxic, emotionally/verbally abusive relationship for six years with a man who had terminal brain cancer. I loved him with every ounce of my being - I tried so hard, made excuses for his behavior- I mean, what did I know about staring death in the face?! Things would be good- then he'd snap, break me down- I would leave- then felt like a horrible person for abandoning him- I went back- he built me back up... Repeat. Repeat. After he passed, it hit me: Jétais malade. The lyric "cet amour me tue" - it almost did. Still putting the pieces back together.
