One tip for anyone doing this. I've done several of these and always come back to this video for a quick refresher. Be careful of the 7 grommets when you take the valve cover off! For some stupid reason (probably rushing because I've done it so many times, I got this, right...) I rotated the cover toward me and 3 of those grommets fell off! Stay focused! Lift it vertically, and put it on the side. One almost went down into the head, one landed on the starter, and I couldn't find the other one for 30 minutes using a flashlight so I thought it actually did drop in the head. But I unpinned the splash shield and thankfully it appeared on the ground after a couple of taps on the shield. This is why mechanic work is so humbling and meditative. You can do something a thousand times, and the one time you lose focus, boom there goes a grommet down your head. That would've SUCKED!

Is that why when I took it off some grommets fell off of it when I put it down? Couldn’t tell where they came from

Another suggestion for those who have to remove the cam cap. Push a clean rag down around the cam next to the bolts, so you don't have a bolt fall into the head and remove it after you replace the bolts. I like to use a magnet to pull the metal caps off the grommets , so the rubber comes up easier and there's less chance of having the metal cap fall into the head. I also like to use a touch of brake clean on my rag when cleaning the mating surface of the head. DON'T SPRAY ONTO THE HEAD! Just a little bit on the rag to help it clean up the oil. When you re-torque the cam cap use a cross torque process and go 25 inch pounds (2 foot pounds) at a time until you reach the required spec (8.7 ft pounds or 105 inch pounds). Using this technique will help prevent loose bolts down the line. Also recommend this for replacing the plenum. Big thumbs up on the video though - I was very worried about the plenum, as I had a bad experience with a Mitubishi Montero once and was hoping I didn't have to do a major breakdown of the intake system. My service manual had no procedure for this (go figure).

Great instructional step by step. Very clear. You are a solid teacher. I like your style. Very calm, succinct and effective. I received the same style cam plug with my kit. I really hope that rtv prevents a leak from the plug. My wife just bought a really beat up 2001 cr-v, and the plug was worn and leaking oil all over the front. I finished the install last night and am letting the rtv cure. I slathered jb weld ultimate grey all along the plug channel like you. I really hope it works. I'm a Honda enthusiast, but I have no idea why Honda designed these b-series engines with that plug.

@@hondaresource So the ultimate grey on the cam plug worked great. No leaks. But I tried to put the valve cover back with no rtv like I've done on other cars just making sure the mating surfaces were super dry. It's worked everytime but this one. There was an oil leak coming from the front right dripping onto exhaust header 1 causing white smoke to burn off the header upon start. So I took it apart, dried everything and put the 8 dabs of rtv at the cam joints like you recommend in this video, reassembled and torqued, let it cure overnight and when I started in the morning, no leaks. 👍🏼

Thanks for making these very helpful videos. I bought my friends well loved 1999 with 212k that was "totaled" by her insurance because of minor damage to the driver side body, and broken mirror/door handle. My plug leaks but I found conflicting information on just popping these in and out. I'll be replacing the timing belt and checking valves at some point(already watched your videos for that) but for now the valve cover doesn't leak and I'm treating it as a camping/beater car.

Great video. I have a 99 that was in an accident and broke an AC line that I can't find anywhere. Do you know of anywhere that sells hard to find parts or would you sell it off on of yours?

What gasket brand do you like for the valve cover?
Also, you got a part number for that cam plug? I bought cam shaft seals from Honda but I think they were like $20 each.
    Thanks!!!!!

I like the Mahle or OEM valve cover gaskets. The plug is BECK/ARNLEY 0396558

Anyways here's how I did it I rotated at six times with tensioner loose like it said then when I got top dead center after the 6th Revolution I tighten the tensioner as hard as I could and torque the bolt

I just turn the crank about 90 degrees and torque the tensioner. Eventually I'll get one in for a timing set and film it.
