Not gonna lie, I loved that old crv sticker on the bottom of the doors. Wish you kept it but then again it did age the car and with the modern lights, it just wouldn't work.
I would take it off. Debadging cars is kinda cool and makes it a clean look. Also it doesn’t hurt when people think it’s like a Honda Pilot or ridge line or higher end Honda model than the cheap slow crv
If he had more time I would have definitely sprung for some custom vinyl replica in a different color way maybe reflective ghosted clear something like that.
Looks great for basically a weekend project. Keep an eye on the rear tail light bulbs. Aftermarket taillights never seal 100% and moisture gets in and blows bulbs constantly.
Man, videos like this make me miss owning 20 year old cars. There’s always something to be done and every little project is so rewarding because the before and after is pretty drastic. Something as simple as a 2 hour polishing job on the paint and headlights makes a huge difference that you get to enjoy every time you look at the car. I’ve got a family now and 75% of the cars on the road are 5000lb SUVs so I’ve got to drive something newer and safer. Not complaining about finally owning a nice reliable vehicle but it’s still a bummer that any weekend projects only provide very subtle results. Even something like a sway bar install or an ECU tune are barely noticeable until you really push the car on a weekend drive. The only mod that I get to appreciate when I walk up to the car has been a $2000 set of wheels and tires lol.
So, this CRV has one of the low compression B20s and you could easily do a VTEC head swap, or add a small eBay turbo kit fairly cheap and as long as y'all don't have emissions testing you could run an OBD1 socketed ECU and run it on Hondata S300 V3 and it'll scoot with 250 awhp. You don't even need to manual swap it, the auto should hold 250 awhp as long as you do a good fluid change. However, if power is the least of your brother's concerns, a good header, exhaust, full cold air intake, and a compensating tune should give it 20 or so more horsepower. I live and breathe Hondas guys...
Owned one of these, got it at 199k miles (US), drove the piss out of it, beat the hell out of it. never failed me. sold it for what I paid with 250k miles. Best beater daily driver/ fun car
Truth. These things are workhorses. Great resale value here in the midwest. I always see these 1st gen and even 2nd gen driving around. Just a testament to Honda's durability given how many 15+ year old CRVs still driving.
Our CRV got bought back by Honda as they wouldn't fix the airbag issue. We kept the fucking table, because screw you Honda, that's ours. That was our camping table.
For adhesive residue, the best thing I've found is pure limonene. It also smells awesome. It doesn't leave an oily mess like Goo Gone and it's much more effective, so you can use less of it.
Limonene is the ester found in most citruses. It gives off a citrus smell, an isomer of limonene with a just a reflected branch smells like pine trees. I smoke crack pipes!
I would take it off. Debadging cars is kinda cool and makes it a clean look. Also it doesn’t hurt when people think it’s like a Honda Pilot or ridge line or higher end Honda model than the cheap slow crv
These are so fun, I'd love to see these become a semi-regular thing where you pimp out a random car from your friend/family's fleets. They're refreshing, a small little break from the track builds, and seeing a common car transformed is nice to see for all of us without a sports car, there's still stuff we can do to our "boring" cars
I recently acquired a 97 CRV and it’s been great so far. 25mpg, AWD never gets stuck in snow, good peppy engine in city traffic, very high build quality and reliable. Cons: driver seat is awfully uncomfortable, lacks power going up mountains, cup holders are too shallow to hold your drinks safely and the steering is much heavier than most other cars but very stable.
Been a Toyota guy all my life. But when I was looking for a daily driver due to my custom Tacoma almost getting stolen, I settled for a 99' 4wd crv. Love the little thing, became a Honda fan immediately. And the 4wd works great on uphills when raining, torquey little motor.
One thing I learned when adding a spoiler is that you're suppose to get new trunk shocks or something. Otherwise the trunk falls on your head if you're on a hill or if it's windy cuz it's much heavier. I don't think you did that, but I guess it's okay. Your brother just needs to be aware before he gets his head banged. When I'm on a hill and have no choice, I rest the trunk on my upper back.
This is a great type of video for you guys to do. It makes us poors feel like, if we just had a place to work, we could make our own old cars feel nice. No pretension, just making someone's useful tool a bit better.
Mine is in “clover green”. It doesn’t have the stickers, but it does have most of the pin stripe on it. After I restore the paint and bumpers I might see if I can get those CRV door stickers for the 90s vibe
my parents have owned 3 CRVs, ive always wanted to get one to do a K-swap and turn it into an awd sleeper beast but i have my hands full with a 1972 celica. Connies series has been a huge help with that and i really appreciate all the info you guys are sharing about the old cars.
Glad yall brought life back into this ole girl. I had a 98 CRV for a couple years and I loved it. Hopefully this one sticks around for many more miles.
So true about the rust. Have a 99 RD1 with 448k on it, but the rear rocker rust is whats keeping me from going full-out on fixing her up. Great vid, stay safe.
I loved this video...I had a '98 CR-V; loved it and miss it. I'd love to see a K-swap into this thing! Please do more of these short and sweet upgrade series!
I know... I just got my own CR-V, and I really like the look of those old decals. Do you know how hard it is to find those today? It's basically impossible. And he just removes them like that without asking...
Always loved the 1st gen crew's. I wanted to buy one but after my 1st gen odyssey I vowed to never have no power again. 5 kids fully loaded a/c on going up the mountains with 130hp will do that to you.
Thank you guys for doing a proper retrofit with xenon HIDs rather than LEDs! But I don't deal with TRS anymore since they didn't publish my review of the Morimoto MLED 2.0 projectors, which were just disappointing. Great work guys!
For tree sap, use alcohol. It will not hurt the paint. It will however remove any protection that you have such as wax and sealant, so be sure to protect it afterwards. I use hand sanitizer to remove sap due to alcohol evaporating and running. Hand Sanitizer sits on the area and works. Once it's sat for a few minutes, rub it off.
Frankenstein the motor. B16 sir head/ b20 bottom end. Put the 5 speed in it, add the clutch delay valve to prevent grenading the transmission input shaft bearing.
i wasn't gonna watch this video. i was like pimp a CRV?😲 I'm glad i watched it tho cause it reminded me how fun it is to breathe a new life into an old vehicle...which is something I've done many times before. good job Speed Academy💪
My daughter’s 99 CRV is a tank. She literally blew a hole in her engine by not adding oil lol. Replaced the engine and she’s run it off the road twice. Once hit a tree and the other hit a dirt bank off an icy road. Was hit head on and no structural damage. Just a dented bumper. It was beat up when we bought it and I’ve replaced the door liners with used parts, upgraded the stereo, replaced the drive line, etc. We joke that bit by bit she’s getting a brand new car lol. Live these cars. It has probably saved her life many times.
I think it's cool you guys have added some detailing to your skill sets. I think as a car enthusiast you just naturally become a better detailer over time, at least that was true for me. You want it too look good. I would add that you should do a decontamination after the wash with an iron remover spray then a clay bar. That way you don't load up that pad and get more swirls or haze. That's was a good choice for a pad. Another good choice for that polish would be the urofiber 50/50 pad or one like it. It's a duel blend microfiber that has a blend of cut and polish fibers. On the trim Meguiars rubber & vinyl cleaner and a trim specific product like Solution Finish. But ceramic coatings work great also to make them look richer longer.
I'll start my comment about ten minutes into this. I think this will look fantastic without the decals, sort of gives it a sleeper vibe. Yeah yeah, I know this thing won't burn up the quarter mile, but it looks great! The polishing will also add 2 grand to the value, in my humble opinion! Great job! Almost makes me wish my wife's CR-V was not a 2016 model! LOL
This video was dope. Can't wait to see the next video. Hopefully this isn't the last time we see this CRV on this channel. Keep up the great work guys !
Ahah don't feel bad about geeky details Pete ! Yesterday I realised that on my M20 block that I've pulled out, I think the factory put a red paint mark around the diameter of the bore that is cast on the side, probably to makre easier to spot between different bore variants. Thing that I never saw before because after 30+ years, the blocks are covered by rust coated with oil leaks .. I like those details too !
I learned that rubbing alcohol dissolves tree sap. I used it to clean all the tree sap from my Pilot. Works better and faster than bug and tar remover.
The power coming on around 4500 rpm is something I've always associated with Hondas. You can squeeze some fun out of most Honda engines in higher revs.

As far as that grey trim and bumper, you can use a heat gun and some time to restore it back to factory new, no need to paint. I do this on the cars I resell. Everyone LOVES it
Big Honda guy, big CRV guy; but man, the conversation from 3:00 on had me chuckling. Literally how me and my buddies talked about our highschool Hondas. "k swap, intake/exhaust, liven it up" It's the Honda Universal Language 😂

Honestly, do more of these. One every 2 or 3 months for a fun diversion from the typical track builds.
Totally agreed. Just like commercial break when you watch tv drama.
Absolutely, I agree 100%. Plus it gives some inspiration for folks looking to spruce up their ride at home during this lockdown.
My RD1 CRV is sitting in the driveway asking to be pimped out. Those headlights are a need for me.
Yes please!
This is exactly what I was thinking.
Love the pimp my crv thing, but you made me cry a little when you pulled the crv decals off.
That's the meaning of PMR. Slap on a wing and take off simple nice things.
It's a case of personal taste, but yeaaa I would've left those for sure.
Yeah the decal would have made it look sportier plus kept a factory sporty look.
Hey put it back. LoL 😆
SAME
When you lend your brother your car as a favour and when you get it back, your favorite pin stripe decals are gone :P
The car wash would of been good enough.
Yea Imo the pinstripes looked cool
yea felt like that hurt the soul of the car
I liked the pin striping :(
Pinstriping looks cheap
Not gonna lie, I loved that old crv sticker on the bottom of the doors. Wish you kept it but then again it did age the car and with the modern lights, it just wouldn't work.
I would take it off. Debadging cars is kinda cool and makes it a clean look. Also it doesn’t hurt when people think it’s like a Honda Pilot or ridge line or higher end Honda model than the cheap slow crv
Samething man
It's kinda radwood, but kinda beige
If he had more time I would have definitely sprung for some custom vinyl replica in a different color way maybe reflective ghosted clear something like that.
Ehhhh, by the time he realized what he had done I think it was too late. Woulda looked out of place with a half sticker.
Looks great for basically a weekend project. Keep an eye on the rear tail light bulbs. Aftermarket taillights never seal 100% and moisture gets in and blows bulbs constantly.

Amen bro....
Shoulda kept the decals.

Yes! I love my 1st Gen, been such a great daily for the last 3 years. Always cool to see these getting hooked up!
Sup Jon!?
I also have one..with a roof rack and spare tire at the back.TOUGH despite the look.the DESK are still in its place.
CRV are criminally underrated. Same for old school Rav 4. Buddy of mine had a 2 door with a stick back in the day.
Only true CRV owners know the table comes under the back trunk area and the “center console” flips down.
Oh Yeah!!!
Also the button to open the trunk.
Our CRV got bought back by Honda as they wouldn't fix the airbag issue. We kept the fucking table, because screw you Honda, that's ours. That was our camping table.

I would take it off. Debadging cars is kinda cool and makes it a clean look. Also it doesn’t hurt when people think it’s like a Honda Pilot or ridge line or higher end Honda model than the cheap slow crv
You mean it gives it that "2001 rice look" lmao
yah the higher trim levels have those stickers, even the sound cruiser edition have them, removing it made it look like any other cr-v
no
Yeah it went from looking like a high end model to a low end model with some AutoZone touches
Perfect lil series for me to get excited about my daily 2001 CRV!

why the hell would you take off the pinstripe and decals, it's honda access
This generation CRV is great! I had one for several years as the family car. Going to try to find another soon for winter!

I've got an old Honda that still has all the stickers on it. I'd disown my brother if he'd remove them "for me".

I was recommended the 335i because I’ve been looking into some but now I’m watching all the way through the playlist and so far I’m hooked
Also just for a trick my auto body teacher taught me to put tape across the pinstripes if it’s double stripe to pull both off easier
I learned that rubbing alcohol dissolves tree sap. I used it to clean all the tree sap from my Pilot. Works better and faster than bug and tar remover.

Lol "my brother"

mikixP HILARIOUS. You’re very talented.
As far as that grey trim and bumper, you can use a heat gun and some time to restore it back to factory new, no need to paint. I do this on the cars I resell. Everyone LOVES it
