As I watch more of these videos of yours, I've slowly realized that I really appreciate the way that this form of artistic and time-consuming memorial feels appropriately weighty in mourning the loss of a human soul from among us. Thank you for, in your own way, helping society remember the dignity and value of a person. It is a good way to honor the Lord.

Thank you very much. As a carver of grave stones I am also a student of the Brevity of Life. My GGGGG grandfather carved on a stone in 1795 and it said “ Eternity Long, Life Short” that is so true

Really interesting how the soul eleblem on top wasn't the norm for that early in the time period. Really fine documented example of how the norm was not always followed even in those times. I like stuff like that because it's unique and stands out. And it helps us to realize that people had personality and preferences back then too

I like to think your beautiful headstones confuse people because they are so stylized and unique in this era that they cannot believe they were made for someone who passed away in 2022. I cannot speak highly enough of your craftsmanship. It is simply stunning.
Question- is your handwriting this beautiful or does your wife have to suffer through interpreting your grocery lists (like I do with mine!)?

My wife can read my 18th century inspired handwriting but it has taken 18 years! She still has a hard time at times. Thank you for your kind words

Beautifully done. The first thing I noticed was how the slate grabbed the light. I was wondering how durable of a material it is for a grave stone. Will it be legible in 100 years? The other thing I noticed is this fella has been gone for two years now so I'd better preorder to get mine before I need it! Thank you again for sharing your trade with us. It's so impressive.

Craig great questions! Believe it or not slate stones in New England from the 1650s are as crisp and sharp as the day they were carved! Yea it is an extremely durable material otherwise I wouldnt carve with it. Secondly many of who do this full time are on a one to 3 year backlog as their aren’t enough of us out there to meet the demand. So yes! Preorder or leave in your will what exactly you would like. That way you get the last word! lol

What characteristics do you look for in the stones that you carve? How are the stones made flat? Are you looking for softness or grain structure?

    • @pumpkintown

Low water absorption rates and longevity proven over the centuries

Are these styles of headstones made for the rich or regular common people in that time period?
