    She's spot on, aggressive and super fun to listen to. Diving into Lizzy Hale's voice reveals lots of cool ways to use compression, mixed voice and several ways to place your vocal distortion.
    Many singers rely mainly on one sound or method for grit and aggressive singing, but Lizzy artfully uses three different approaches! She seamlessly stitches them together with soaring and in-your-face melodies too.
    Let's experiment and come up with some cool new sounds in our own voices!

    When I first heard "Freak Like Me", I also thought that the ridiculously high and distorted "me" was digitally altered to go that high........until I heard her do it live. It's real and astonishing.

    Give a listen to Halestorm's 'Takes My Life' sometime. They've only done it live, and there's a video from 2006 where Lzzy shows some batshit crazy range. The quality of her lower register(s) there is just as impressive as the scream near the end.

    Lizzy Hale's belts have a nice complimenting overtone with the distortion, almost making sound very spacious, plus the doubling with the audio production makes it very satisfying

    I hear a very primal, "apeish" quality to her screaming, while you're notoriously the master of the "dying cat" Cornell sound. :) It's funny how similar techniques can sound quite different depending on the singer!

    A lot of it also comes naturally when you really put your emotions into it as though it’s exactly what you’re feeling at that moment. It adds so much dimension and grit to the sound experience.
    A perfect example would be the famous MTV UNPLUGGED live performance of Vedder singing “Black”. whoooo. The last minute or two of that performance. You fully believe that he’s reliving that feeling and moment he wrote about. That’s good singing. Making the song your own by imaging going thru exactly what the lyrics suggest the writer felt when writing it. When you let go and surrender to the true emotion (anger/betrayal/heartache whatever ) it DEFINITELY translates and makes the performance and sound ten times better. And I find when I put myself there, a lot of the grit and distortion comes naturally because it’s a way of emphasizing a word or the emotion behind a phrase because we do it subconsciously when speaking about something that we feel strongly about
    Idk if this makes sense but it does to me. I’ve taken years of voice lessons but I’ve found that certain techniques come naturally when you submit to the EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE behind the lyrics and make it personal.
    In other words -->Reliving it.
    Trying to convince the listener that “xyz” happened to me and dammit it hurt! I felt “xyz” because this person did that, and it left me feeling “blah blah” don’t u see/can’t u understand the hell I’m going thru?

    I have a question. I was watching another Lzzy voice analysis video and the guy had a student show the techniques. He drew attention to her open throat. As I watched I noticed that the head position was a huge part of that while also realizing I do the same thing. Regardless of the style of singing I use my resonance comes from that open throat. And my head going up and back is a huge part of that. But lately I’m noticing pain in the back of my neck at the base of my skull. This has never happened before. I know I’m doing something wrong but I can’t pin point what I’m doing wrong. How do I prevent that pain.

    This is a little difficult for new viewers. There were quite a few techniques you mentioned that you seemed to assume people would know how to do having seen your other videos, but this was the first one of yours I've seen so I'm a little lost.

      Right... I totally get that! I can't possibly get to the basics on every video... That's why I've created playlists of different techniques on my channel and I've created a free voice course linked in the video description that will help you better work with the content you see here!
