This wasn't a screaming lesson, but I experimented with these exercises and it's helping me to scream properly FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER! It sort of happened by accident!
Your teaching is so incredibly effective for several reasons... First, you break things down into manageable chunks that anyone with the basics or better can work on without ever feeling overwhelmed, then move onto the next chunk. Second, you're extremely encouraging but realistic. Anyone can do this stuff, but you'll have to put in the work. Third, you've made it not only okay to sound ridiculous while working on this stuff, but expected, because you lead by example. "If he can do it on UA-cam where it'll live forever, surely I can do this in my office or car." The more I've watched your videos and taken your class, the more I realize how uncomfortable I was in the past with any sound coming out of my mouth that I didn't think was pleasing. I've learned that to discover what sounds pleasing, you have to work through a ton of stuff that doesn't. From warmups to exercises to performance. It's not all going to be pretty. Not only is that acceptable, it's a necessary part of it. Embrace it.
Your Cornell covers are awesome. Your voice is incredibly close to the real Cornell take. If I heard it without the video, I would assume it was him. Killer cover at the beginning, great tune.

Have to say I haven’t finished the video yet… But I’ve already tried your thing about using the stomach compression from “the old man voice “in your mixed voice and head voice, and it’s already making a huge difference! This is going to change everything for me. Thank you so so so so much! What I get from this is that it’s not really about using more chess voice in your mix in order to achieve “chest“ mix. That’s really a misnomer. It’s just about using your mixed voice with more compassion. That makes so much more sense.

As always, Chris, thanks for making all of this seem so possible. I’m kind of gathering videos from all across the web on mix. I’m noticing a tremendous number of similarities in what is being said. Basically, our chest voice is often the strongest at first because it sits down where “shortener” muscles dominate, and they get used a lot there. We all one day discover we have “another” voice that is higher. This voice almost always starts out sounding really thin because the “lengthener” muscles ten to thin out the chords, but the “shorteners” are not able to keep the chords bulky against the tension. At the highest end, it becomes literally impossible to have a true “chest” timbre, these CT and TA muscles (along with many others in the system) have to learn to balance and can only do so when enough practice has trained them in their place to do so. The other issue seems to be the aryepiglottic sphincter, which can give huge resonance boosts as the sound head toward the soft palate. There are also the forms that boosts. Overall, I suspect that vocal pedagogy is on the verge of some pretty significant anatomically driven understandings of how to build the human voice to its full potential.
Really helpful, Chris, thank you. For me it highlights that the feel of compression in mix is a bit different from the feel of compression in chest, and it'll be good to lean into that awareness in my practice. I'm working through your Mixed Voice Method and Madness course at the moment, so this is a really timely extra lesson!

I always had the opinion, either you can sing or not. but with these videos I learned, why my voice was sometimes better and sometimes not. I am talking about live gigs. I make music since 27 years. I also learned, that you still can improve on your voice. But I always want to sound authentic still.
Hey Chris your videos are awsome and a great inspiration ive learned so much from you over the years. I have a video request on the topic of getting your band to tune down to better fit you voice. One thing thats always held me back and made me tense was i would always try to sing songs out of my vocal range where my voice wasnt comfortable so i always thought i was a bad singer even though i felt i had good technique. I had a vocal instructor suggest this to me once and the problem was i couldn't get people on board to tune down its some weird stigma i guess with musicians. Usually the differnce between a tenor and a baritone was just a couple notes and as a guitar player ive noticed certian bands playing down in C standard tuning. I started transposing songs by playing what i would play in a e standard With my guitar tuned to C standard. I was able to better sing the songs i couldnt before with more comfort and freedom and it gave me alot more confidence with my voice. I think this would be a good topic for people who belive they have the so called baritone curse or feel they just arnt good enough to sing cause they cant sing high when really its about singing with freedom and quality. Its really not a common topic anywhere and I think it coming from you it would help this stigma cause i know when i was lost in my journey i would come to youtube channels like yours for inspiration and guidance. Dude how did I just go from an A4 as my top note never understanding a mix belt only singer to hitting a F5 (on end of viva las vengeance) without any head voice (very tough but the C5 easy as could be even with vibrato and its powerful I'm not disappointed with its power at all) . I'm legitimately in shock, of course I have no idea how to use it and like no dynamics or control but holy shit it's like my entire life just changed, 24 hours ago an A4 was my top note. What do I do next, binging all your mix videos, your approaching to f scales and just make noises is absolutely pure genius. Thank you for existing
