Thank you for this. I watched another video and he said to use compression (lots of air) which was hurting my throat. Since learning how to do growls and screams, I can recognize when I'm damaging my throat. It's a little sore from the last video, but this was a lot easier. Kudos to you for sure!
Hey glad this helps! To clarify - when you use compression, you HOLD BACK the air... I hope you will subscribe and activate notifications so I can clarify this on a future video! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment - much love!
Compression is the opposite of using lots of air. Compression is singing with the least required amount of air to make the desired sound whilst maintaining pressure.
Hey I've seen a lot of these how to "sound like "videos on all sorts of guys, but i haven't seen one on Dan McCafferty of Nazareth. That guy is the GODFATHER of high, raspy vocals... influenced everyone from Bon Scott to Axl Rose. I feel like he is the one to study because he is in his 70s, and STILL is nailing it with the same voice. That's the guy. Can you do a video on him..?
Wow - GREAT suggestion! I will put that on the list for sure! I really love to dig into the influences of my influences, and Nazareth is definitely a HUGE one there! Thank you for your suggestion and taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Brother. Is it possible for you to make a Bryan Adams tutorial? "Straight From The Heart..." I can't find a tutorial that can convincingly explain how it imprints that resonance, air and distortion, yet in a smooth way. That voice sounds so warm. Thanks!
You're awesome! This is actually a technique I use for metal screams, I haven't been able to limit it. Could you make a video on a light false cord rasp?

Good day, I was wondering if you have or can do a lesson about the rock and roll rasp, like Presley's voice in Jailhouse Rock and Trouble. It is just really fascinating how he could keep that voice for the whole song of Jailhouse Rock, and also belt it for the latter.
I'ts been almost 10 years that I want to learn how to sing with distortion but I never could. Your video helped me a lot, it was the only one that did, but still I'm having a lot of trouble with getting that distortion, I can activate the vocal fry, but I can't sing it loudly with the vocal fry. I can get a very little dirty on my voice when I let less air come out like you said, but then the distortion is not powerful. I other words, if my voice is loud and powerful it's not distorted. Do I have to combine the vocal fry with the baloon thing you said in you video about compression? I want to sound like George Yanagi, Crazy Ken Band or Tom Waits. That kind of drunk blues man voice lol
Hi, It's almost impossible to diagnose what you are doing versus what you want to achieve with your voice without hearing you. Enrolling in my "Rapid Vocal Transformation" course would provide that feedback
That should improve with practice… sometimes when you start working with a technique, the lack of control can be a bit frustrating. The pitch control is provided by your “support” (diaphragm), but at the start I would just play with the sound and slowly improve support
You think Chester Bennington was doing it wrong since his voice got noticeably weaker over time and tiny? I think he had to get surgery don’t at one point but I forget. Your distortion voice is really good when doing that Bryan Adams song. That’s almost exactly the tone I’d go for in distortion, very musical sounding like a guitar over driving the tubes.
Hey man, I do the same thing as you... but I get into fry scream very easily with that technique. I am trying with the healthy technique but it comes out more like a fry scream... or is that just me😅
I want my voice to sound like Stevie nicks. I don’t think her voice was raspy before joining Fleetwood Mac tho, I don’t know how she did it 😂 can you help me?!!
Of course you can get that "Stevie" rasp in your voice, it will just take work for you to learn how to apply it to your voice without damaging your voice. I'm not sure if her voice became raspy due to touring/excessive use, but you can certainly apply rasp safely for stylistic purposes. It will just take some work and practice. If you want to book 1:1 sessions that's probably your best to work directly with me on this for a clear path of what you can do to achieve your goals
When I try this I feel discomfort in the top of my mouth. Feels like the roof of my mouth is irritated both in the top front and top back. Its directly on the hard palette no idea why.
As long as it's not your vocal cords I wouldn't worry too much, but if you are concerned you might consider seeking the advice of a medical professional
Ok so ik this is old but does this work for females to bc I wanna be able to sing like Courtney live even tho she did really terrible things I just wanna be able to have a strong raspy scream and be able to sing rock and 90s grunge songs
Hey, of course this will work for females, they can do AMAZING things with their voices - maybe even better than guys! Just check out how amazing Tatiana from the band "Jinjer" is... you can do that too! Just takes work and dedication, but YOU CAN!!!
why not just say it. Bryan Adams has a high-ass voice so when he sings in his chest voice, he can just add the rasp easily. He's not straining to hit the pitches nor is he doing any kind of head voice or special technique. It's like a vid trying to teach someone how to sing like Dio or Brad Delp. If you have a tuba, you can't play flute parts. Thx for trying tho. At least this will make singers aware that there are different sounds they can make w/o yelling loudly. 4:25 yours is strained. Bryan's is still controlled and not into any mix or head voice. I'd advise people to sing inside their comfy range (key) while working in practice mode to extend their chest voice range as much as nature will allow. 4:28 literally sounds like an 80 year old man trying to sing a Bryan Adams tune. Bryan is not squeezing and straining like that. His voice is open and the basic timbre does not change as he ascends in pitch. oh well....
@@RockYourBestVocals Oh, thanks and sorry if I sounded a bit harsh above but I just know from watching a lot of vocal tut vids that every single one where a baritone is trying to sing high sounds really strained OR the timbre is not correct because they are having to resort to some kind of mix or head voice to reach pitches. I mean, I realize guys like Brian Johnson and Tom Keifer used a gravelly falsetto of sorts but on my covers I sang it in lower keys then pitch shifted it up to the orig key (cheated hehehe) so even I know that even if I trained for years, I'd still not be able to sing the stuff going up past C5. BUT... you can increase your range and ability and that's still a good thing because you will just sound like you or something and here's my thought.... the MAIN thing in singing is hitting your pitches with stability. Timbre actually is secondary. I mean, who would have thought Bon Scott would sound good singing by listening to him talk? Yet... he was hitting his pitches and had crazy range so... that combined with that evil weird tone... it worked. I'm rambling. But thanks for the nice words. I stopped uploading because of personal reasons beyond my control. I doubt I will ever upload to that channel again. I haven't really sung anything much since I stopped uploading there. Been doing house repairs and voice acting and just trying to get from one day to another. Hope you have a good Christmas and New Years!
Depends on the context. I would suggest that I’m always singing with some level of compressed sound - it’s a matter of adding more to increase volume (while limiting air release)
@@RockYourBestVocalsI bet they mean the "harmonica" sound that is there intermittently. As to the answer: I'm betting that at higher volumes (like how loudly and quickly you'd be singing in a real situation) that would either go away completely, or get lost in the overall sound. It sounds like an artifact of unnaturally slowed down "demonstration" singing.
it takes time to get this, so you have to just keep working at it... if you really want to sing, you will keep at it. If you don't want to learn how, you won't.... if you want to succeed at something (anything in life!) you must remove that word "can't" from your vocabulary....
Like when she sung that song in 1995 the song I’m so high and the way she was raspy screaming was good and I tried to do that and my throat started hurting and I stopped so can this also work for females to
Man I do metal vocals like all kinds of inhuman noises but I just wanna sound like the dude from mighty mighty bosstones cuz I have to do someday i suppose at karaoke night
Have you tried listening very closely to them and doing your best to emulate the tones? That's where I would start. He has great compression and support - I have a few videos on these subjects that may help you
Interesting, but a singer like Josh Todd sounds like he's doing it the wrong way. It's odd, but for me it depends on the song. I can sing "Ace of Spades" like Lemmy the right way, but when it comes to other songs, like "Lit Up" by Buck Cherry, I have more difficulty without doing it the wrong way. I think the "Correct Way" leans heavily on the microphone and the wrong way is as if you don't have that amplifier.
It's impossible to tell what's going on with you unless I hear you as example I'm afraid, but you can book a 15min consultation for FREE and maybe I can help then!

Depends on the context. I would suggest that I’m always singing with some level of compressed sound - it’s a matter of adding more to increase volume (while limiting air release)
Any chance you could cover how to do Mccartney rasp vocals
how do you filter out the overtones I am hearing in both of your techniques?
I believe what you are hearing as far as overtones IS the rasp 🤷🏼♂️🤔 not exactly sure what you’re asking really…
I can’t do it without pushing too much air through, and idk what to do🥲
it takes time to get this, so you have to just keep working at it... if you really want to sing, you will keep at it. If you don't want to learn how, you won't.... if you want to succeed at something (anything in life!) you must remove that word "can't" from your vocabulary....
Very good video! This is very similar to Bon Jovi too!
He has great compression and support - I have a few videos on these subjects that may help you
You sounded like bon Jovi while doing Bryan adams 😅. That's awesome😆
after practicing raspy way is it normal to have a weird feeling at uvula?
And I also tried not to give out air out while practicing
as long as 'weird' doesn't = 'pain'
Awesome!
You sound like Jon Bon Jovi
Your natural talking voice sounds alot like jon bon jovi 🤣nice vid very helpful
He kinda looks like the guy from the shining
😂
Wow you got a bonjovi kinda tone.. nice tutorial 🤝😁
Wow, thanks! 😊
I naturally have a naturally harmonic voice
How do I get that raspy voice from you'll like it darker
So this technique only works while singing the falsetto?
No you can use in any range, it was just the example I gave I believe
Interesting, but a singer like Josh Todd sounds like he's doing it the wrong way. It's odd, but for me it depends on the song. I can sing "Ace of Spades" like Lemmy the right way, but when it comes to other songs, like "Lit Up" by Buck Cherry, I have more difficulty without doing it the wrong way. I think the "Correct Way" leans heavily on the microphone and the wrong way is as if you don't have that amplifier.
I had a pretty nice singing voice until I got bad tonsillitis, so now I’m going to try to embrace my new raspy voice 🥹
Thank you from Sweden // Peter Christensen
You're welcome Peter! Sweden is a wonderful place! 😊👍
I swear I have yet to hear a singing exercise that isn't goofy as hell 😂
Thanks a lot, this is what I've been looking for 👍
Happy to help! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! 😊👍🏼🙏🏽
Here because I want to sing like Paul McCartney when he does raspi voice just like in I’ve Got a Feeling
Trying this but I struggle reaching those high notes 🥲
Me too sometimes, but if I can do it, you can! It’s just down to support and placement - in that order…. Keep working at it and never give up!
I seem to loose all of the raspy sound the second i get loud any tips?
It's impossible to tell what's going on with you unless I hear you as example I'm afraid, but you can book a 15min consultation for FREE and maybe I can help then!
i leanred something, your voice sounds alot like mine.
Awesome - we ROCK, don't we?!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
I’m trying to sing begging
Oooohhh great song and great band! I’m going to do a video on this soon! Stay tuned - subscribe and all that stuff 😂👍🏼
Are we all just having a Maneskin moment here? Lol.
Is it possible to sing like tom waits naturally or do i have ro breathe cigarette smoke instead of air in order to sing like that
When I go in my vocal fry, I end up in the whistle notes. Lol
