Trying this right now! Thanks girl. Notes: - Shampoo + condition - Plop 10 mins - Gently apply foam, then open palm scrunch. Make sure to apply to back/underside of hair from different angles. - Diffuse on hot without touching hair, slightly cupping hair then on low to 90% dry
Your hair amazes me. It's not just the curls but the condition and bounce that is so beautiful. And you are such a natural lovely person. I am a 60 years old youtuber ha ha. I don't do hair videos, but in my next vlog I am going to recommend my viewers pop over to take a look . Thank you so much for sharing, it has revived my curls and the love of my hair. Sue
My god not one strand of frizz!! I have hair envy now! 😁 My texture and density and even the cowlick is similar to yours. I'm a little over a year and a half into my journey and every day is different! Thanks for allnyour great tips!!
Oh my gosh Courtney! I just tried this method, and my wavy hair instantly sprung up and I have 2C curls! So this is my natural hair texture!!! I'm so happy with my hair now!
this is what i was doing at the beginning of my curly journey. I wasnt using cg products but the technique saves lives. now i like styling in the shower using gel and I get pretty good results so far. also mel's diffuse technique is great. I don't really like using mousse for wash days anymore but it's perfect for refreshes since it gives a light cast and I love all types of casts. the harder they are the better because i feel like it helps me keep my hair from dropping since I am at the beginning of my cg journey
Yaaaasss!!! Another Manes by Mell diffusing convert (but she recommends starting with hair upside down and roots first, but otherwise... yep, this is it!). It's made all the difference in my hair! Thanks for the easy peasy, not a ton of product-y-ness wash routine!!
So, I just washed my hair and implemented your open palm scrunching and I truly have a looot more defined clumps! Usually when I STC my hair gets frizzy already in the shower because it holds so little water. Thank you, this might really be a game changer! 😊
I love that you have type 2 hair. The curls are so much more delicate and I die watching all of these type 3 girls brushing away and then saying anyone can do that. X
I’m so happy I found you!!! You are my hair goals. Super shiny and soft and frizz-free is what I want even if I never get curlier. How do you refresh? Link me a video maybe? I have such OILY hair that refresh never works if my scalp is greasy and 🤢🤮 teach me sensei!!!!!!!!
That Innersense product has been my holy grail product if I’ve ever had one-but I have only recently started washing and conditioning my hair via the method you show. I think I’m going to get much better results with my hair with these techniques. At least I hope so. My waves tend to be very stringy.
I’m going to try this on my next wash day. I have some struggle with the back crown off my head where my hair becomes frizzy. With the front coming out awesome..
I plop with a net type fabric, I bought a hood that attaches to my hair dryer and dry my hair with the fabric on my head and absolutely LOVE the results!!
My daughter is absolutely amazed at the results and tells me I need to do a video of it, but I don’t have the first clue how to do a you tube video 😳 I would love to see someone do one!!!

Your hair gives me hope. I'm definitely going to try it. Our hair looks quit similar when you were washing it only with my hair once I'm done washing it and comb threw it it will become pin straight. But seeing as my hair wet looks almost the same means that I maybe still have a change. I mean I used the have curls as a young child and wavey big poof hair as a teen. Who knows
Thanks for this. I'm just starting out and the amount of videos saying "don't use heat, air dry" I get why but my hair is super think and I have a compromised immune system so siting all day with wet hair is a no go. I'm going to try that diffusing roots method and lifting hair when rinsing next time!
Love your video and your hair the color is amazing and the technique you are using is interesting with the open hands and gentle....I have been using a bowl for my rinse and that might be helping with the results I have been getting as I grow out my hair.....from a pixie.
Cassy Green oh my goodness you are so sweet. My hair wasn’t always this shiny. In fact it keeps getting shinier and shinier the longer I do the curly girl method. I don’t think it’s any one product that causes the shine. Just healthy hair habits. No heat, silicones, drying alcohols, etc. That being said I think my hair really likes being clarified, deep conditioned, and apple cider vinegar rinses. 🤷🏼♀️
I just watched 2 of your videos and have a couple questions. I also discovered I have naturally curly hair by accident. I have waist length virgin hair, fine, medium density, and high porosity. And I'm old. Thank the hair goddess, it's still light brown so people think I color my hair, until I show them the whole length, dispersed shiny shiny white ones. I'm interested in bigger, loopier, clumpy curls, so want to try this method, but I simply cannot hold a blow dryer up that long due to some health problems. Can I apply styling product before plopping and sleep in the plop? Top volume is not going to happen (or stay) because of the length anyway. Also, you said protect your hair while sleeping - how? Thank you so much for this information, and your hair is amazing!
Cyn McCollum I don’t have a diffuser. What I do is I wash my hair early in the morning or in the evening (around 5-7pm). I plop my hair for 10-15 minutes then I use root clips (gives 10/10 volume) then I just let my hair air dry (I apply my products while my hair is still dripping wet). If you chose to do it before bed just pull your hair up in a non damaging satin scrunched and sleep on a satin or silk pillow case. In the morning you can just spray your hair so it’s wet (doesn’t have to be dripping) I then apply a bit more of my products (styling cream and gel) then I scrunch and that’ll typically dry in like 15-30 minutes to dry. I hope that helps. I’m still new to the whole curly girl method but maybe it’ll help!
Getting my hair wet in the pool or by the hose gives me the best curls . I’m not sure why but I think it has something to do with my hair getting stripped . I can usually do curls in the summer cause of the humidity but that’s it . Kinda gave up though when it doesn’t work out . Although I haven’t tried the curly girl method yet or not fully .
Beautiful beautiful hair!! How is it SO shiny and not frizzy at all?! Well, I just hope one day my shapeless hair transforms into -at least half of- yours.
I wondered on your channel because I just got a perm and was looking for products. I must say you have inspired me so much. I just cut my hair and permed it from butt length to chin length because I was so tired of the tangles and flat lifeless nature of my hair that made it horrible to deal with. Not to mention the amount of hair I lost all over the house. I wore it up on top of my head all the time so I figured what was the point of having such long hair. My hair seemed like it was very similar to yours so now I'm wondering what would happen if I tried CGM to get it healthy. TY.
Oh my, I think the "open palm scrunch" might just be my holy grail. Scrunching always causes clumps to break up and my hair look too stringy and frizzy.
When do you brush your hair? Before you wash?? This is the most confusing thing for me about CG I lose so much hair per day I shed so much I NEED to brush my hair to keep it at bay. Any advice on when I can/should brush and with what kind of brush def appreciated
Well thank you! It does take a while to explain the process. It actually takes me 30 min from start to finish. Including showering, getting dressed, make up, etc. That is really quick for me.
You need less help than I do. I have barely wavy hair now that it is grey. It used to wave much more and without help. I put mine back in a plop once it is diffused dry but still slightly damp, and I keep it in the plop for around an hour sometimes more. This seems to set my waves better and gives it more waves and lift. It does drop over the course of the day but I just style it differently as the day goes on i.e put it behind my ears or add a hair band or scarf. I am taking on board some of your very good tips. I have been using this method for only a few weeks. I have already had the compliments in my new wavy/curly hair. I feel like my real self once again. It definitely is more work on wash day but worth it in my (very new to CG) opinion!
@@studio19salon52 I tried it in the shower, out of the shower, nothing seems to work quite right. My hair is very fine and only slightly wavy, so it doesn't like to hold onto the waves when it's long, and it gets weighed down very easily. Next time I cut it short I may try this method again. I'm still only using sulfates once a week and avoiding any products with silicones.
I will definitely try the diffusing technique but the prep/product application seemed to take longer than the way I normally do it. And I don’t think ur hair turned out as curly as it usually does. But thanks for the tips!
Recently found your channel and I'm really enjoying it. I have a couple of questions about this routine; hopefully you can answer. 1 - you're using the Dyson hairdryer? 2 - I live in Canada and the Innersense foam is not readily available and is REALLY pricey on the Amazon.ca. Do you have any other recommendations for a quick wash day product? Thank you!
Great video Courtney! So, no leave-in in this routine? Would you ever use a gel instead of the mousse? I imagine you use the mousse because it's faster drying. :)
I love your videos! I'm just starting out with the cgm, and I used a gel to scrunch it. I feel that my hair is still really sticky after I scrunch it out. I thought I got it all scrunched out, but did I not? Or did I use too much?
I love your videos, they're so quirky funny and helpful...haven't seen them all yet but I've seen a few of you washing your hair, and this may be a silly question, but when do you do the rest of your shower? Normally I would wash my hair, put my hair into a shower cap so it doesn't get soap on it and then do the rest of my body,...and any hair styling would come after my shower. With the method in this video, it seems you have to wash your body first? So that you can jump out of the shower right after washing and styling the hair? I love your hair btw it looks so healthy!!!
Do you wash your hair upside down in the shower also? I struggle with how to part my hair, it usually ends up down the middle. Also, can you suggest an affordable deep conditioning mask with NO protein in it? I am lacking moisture!!
I LOVE your waves 💕Your hair looks really gorgeous aus. Can't wait to try out this routine this evening, especially the "open palm" part. As I am always "running late", I think it will e my new hair routine 😜 One question: do you always wash your hair upside down or was it just for the video?
I do actually wash my hair upside down all the time. It really seems to help give me root lift! I would love to know how this routine works out for you! 🤗
Swavy Curly Courtney Thank you for your answer 🤗 While my hair is still wet it gets really beautiful wavy which this routine but as soon as they dry and the cast is out, nearly all the waves are gone and only a lot of volume is left, which is also ok but... 😩 Maybe I use the wrong products? I have Deva Curl. Greetings from Germany 🌼
I just use my fingers to comb the conditioner through. This conditioner has soooo much slip! It makes it super easy to detangle my hair. I do sometimes use a wet brush to distribute the conditioner in my hair which might work for you too!
I find that if I use the diffuser with on section on warm, then put it on the cool setting, then warm, then cool again, I seem to get a better curl set. Have you tried this? Pros? Cons?
Lauren Rhine thank you! I’m not really sure what my curl type is but it is safe to say that most of the time I live in the type 2 area. And yes! I have lots and lots of layers. I have a video about my hair cut on my channel if that is helpful.
I don’t have a lot of time in the morning and I am thinking of finding my waves with the curly girl technique. I could have 30 minutes but it’s pushing it as a have a long drive to work. Any suggestions? Also, is the there a line of products you recommend where you can get deep conditioner, leave in, low poo shampoo etc, start this?
Thanks for sharing your short and sweet routine, super helpful! You're hair is so shiny! Would you do a video on your 2nd day hair routine? Despite pineappleting (mine hair's a little shorter) and sleeping on a satin pillowcase, I'm still struggling with my 2nd day hair looking stringy.
fcaffey my first question would be how long have you been doing the curly girl method? My day two hair was very stringy for a long time. Just at about 10 months of cg my hair started to look better on day two. And I have found sleeping on a silk pillow case makes a huge difference. I used to sleep on satin and when I switched to silk my day two hair got much better! I also find that applying a bit of alikay lemongrass leave in to dry hair works great to refresh!
@fcaffey Maybe try plopping inside a silk scarf or bonnet instead of a pineapple bc putting the hair up stretched out a bit and may contribute to the springiness.
idk if you've done a video like this but could you do one on curly girl friendly professional hairstyles? I know pulling back in a harsh pony isnt good for hair but i'd like to see what other ways to pull it back without damaging it might be
A looser bun/ponytail with a soft hairtie that won't break your hair(so for example a scrunchie) is fine actually! you just don't want it to pull your hair back too hard because that could cause breakage
I’m transitioning to my very wavy hair. I wash my shoulder length hair at night and let it dry naturally. It’s a mess when I wake up. How do I preserve the curls while sleeping?
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney alternatively do the same thing with Curlsmith Effortless Waves spray. It works on either wet or dry hair so it’s great for refreshing or when I didn’t have the time or energy to style on wash day
I hope some day my waves look like yours, mine look like yours when wet but they slowly fall down through the day, I'm suspecting a product I'm using is weighing them down, I have very fine hair and at the moment no layers so thats not doing the waves any justice.
So you rake your conditioner through your hair and it doesn't break up your clumps?! I always have the tendency to rake mine through my hair, but I stop myself because I want to preserve the clumps as best as I can! Interesting. :) Also, no leave-in conditioner? I'm going to try to copy this routine. :) Thanks!
Kristin Higgins yeah I know this seems crazy! Haha when I first started I couldn’t rake in anything! Now I ONLY rake in my conditioner. And rinsing it out with tons of water really really helps bring all the clumps back together. And sometimes I will add a tiny pea of conditioner back to my hair if I am having ridiculous amount of wet frizz. But if there is only a little bit of wet fizz then I don’t worry about it.
thenacat shoot I haven’t tried it without diffusing! I find that diffusing is something I do when I style my hair. When I go product free I do tend to air dry and that may actually be a faster routine. But if I’m adding any stylers to me hair I will go a head and diffuse. It give me a better result I think. 🤷🏼♀️ sorry about that.
Conscious Health Writer thank you! I did use a conditioner after I cleansed my hair in this video. And I do a deep conditioning treatment every two weeks. Sometimes I will add a leave in to my hair but if I am in a really big rush this is the routine I use. This will get you out the door in 30 min! Whoohoo!
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney thank you! But for someone who has frizz, would you say I would need to put a leave in conditioner, styling gel and mousse to keep my hair frizz free, or at least looking presentable? 🙈
Conscious Health Writer oh you are absolutely welcome to add a leave in and gel if that helps you with your frizz!!! I was shocked at how well my hair held up with just a mousse. And only having the mousse in my hair helped my hair dry much quicker than normal. I like saving this routine for when I am really needing to rush out the door. But if you have a couple of extra minutes I believe a leave in and gel would be very helpful!!!
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney thank you. I'm so glad I found you! My hair is very fine as well, and high porosity. Now I'm having to start to cover little greys here and there and can't go all-natural. I'm trying different things trying to not distrou my hair, as I've done in the past. Do you have a blog or know of a blog/article that mentions a list of the products we need to stay away from? Or an app or website with "hair product ingredient safety" or something like that? Sorry for all of the questions!
Conscious Health Writer no please don’t be sorry for asking questions! The best place to start is by reading the Curly Girl Handbook book (link in description). That will get you started on learning the basics and which ingredients to avoid. This blog is amazing right here: themestizamuse.com/ Verna talks about a tons of stuff. Buckle you seat belt. It’s like drinking from a fire hydrant. Haha! Another resource that has helped me out a lot is: science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/?m=1 so so helpful. And lastly I love using: www.isitcg.com to see is something if cg friendly or not. It’s not a perfect website and has missed stuff before so be careful. But it is still helpful nonetheless!
This is sooo great! I've tried it just based off of your Instagram stories but it's super helpful to see it for real! Have you tried it with other stylers? I dint have innersense foam, is there a good alternative to it?
I love seeing how others take care of their curly hair!! My hair is a bit thicker and MUCH curlier, so if i were to scrunch like this, I don't think I'd be able to get enough product into my hair to keep it from going frizzy. So cool to see this though!!
If you have long hair does it matter for curl pattern? My hair it to my elbows. I like having long hair. It dries wavy and straight combo. I have never done curly girl method stuff. I do typically air dry and have never died my hair. My hair like yours was board straight until teen years. I assume I have similar 2a,b and maybe some C patterns. Roots are always FLAT and my hair gets weighed down and oily easily. I wash about 2-3 times a week but hair is oily by day 3 for sure so those are pony tail days!
Not sure this has been asked, but do you also shampoo upside down in your shower in the same way as with the faucet in the bath? Or rightside up? Just getting started over here!
One more question: I shower every evening and don’t wash my hair every time. I’ve been wetting my hair but no shampoo then let it air dry. Or I pin it up and it just gets damp. Not sure if I should use a shower cap? I ordered the silk pillow case you suggested.
I don't use a shower cap either! I just let it get a bit damp when I shower and don't wash my hair. Not big deal! I do try an make sure it is dry before I lay down. That helps keep things from getting weird and wonky in the morning.
Trying this right now! Thanks girl.
Notes:
- Shampoo + condition
- Plop 10 mins
- Gently apply foam, then open palm scrunch. Make sure to apply to back/underside of hair from different angles.
- Diffuse on hot without touching hair, slightly cupping hair then on low to 90% dry
Thank you~

Tree Sniffer what products are you using if you don’t mind me asking? I am a hairstylist so I’m interested
Thank you!
Her hair is so pretty I can’t
Great video Courtney! So, no leave-in in this routine? Would you ever use a gel instead of the mousse? I imagine you use the mousse because it's faster drying. :)
I love your videos! I'm just starting out with the cgm, and I used a gel to scrunch it. I feel that my hair is still really sticky after I scrunch it out. I thought I got it all scrunched out, but did I not? Or did I use too much?
This is your best look
I love your videos, they're so quirky funny and helpful...haven't seen them all yet but I've seen a few of you washing your hair, and this may be a silly question, but when do you do the rest of your shower?
Normally I would wash my hair, put my hair into a shower cap so it doesn't get soap on it and then do the rest of my body,...and any hair styling would come after my shower. With the method in this video, it seems you have to wash your body first? So that you can jump out of the shower right after washing and styling the hair?
I love your hair btw it looks so healthy!!!
Ugh! Definitely focus on getting it back to health. I have highlighted hair now and have a video's up of how I am tackling this!
Wow I just found your channel and I'm already learning things! and talk about hair goals! WoW!
As I am always "running late", I think it will e my new hair routine 😜
One question: do you always wash your hair upside down or was it just for the video?
I do actually wash my hair upside down all the time. It really seems to help give me root lift! I would love to know how this routine works out for you! 🤗
Swavy Curly Courtney Thank you for your answer 🤗
While my hair is still wet it gets really beautiful wavy which this routine but as soon as they dry and the cast is out, nearly all the waves are gone and only a lot of volume is left, which is also ok but... 😩
Maybe I use the wrong products? I have Deva Curl. Greetings from Germany 🌼
@@hallo_portugal My hair would do that early on on my curl hair journey. It took time for my clumps to start sticking together longer.
So, you don't comb your hair at all? I always have knots. Or feel the need to comb. My curls are a perm, though, not natural lol
I just use my fingers to comb the conditioner through. This conditioner has soooo much slip! It makes it super easy to detangle my hair. I do sometimes use a wet brush to distribute the conditioner in my hair which might work for you too!
What do you do in between washes? Like sleeping on it and making it look good the next day?
I find that if I use the diffuser with on section on warm, then put it on the cool setting, then warm, then cool again, I seem to get a better curl set. Have you tried this? Pros? Cons?
Your hair looks amazing. What is your main curl type and do you have layers?
Lauren Rhine thank you! I’m not really sure what my curl type is but it is safe to say that most of the time I live in the type 2 area. And yes! I have lots and lots of layers. I have a video about my hair cut on my channel if that is helpful.
Gorgeous clumps...hairgoals
AC AC291 😭🥰🤗
I don’t have a lot of time in the morning and I am thinking of finding my waves with the curly girl technique. I could have 30 minutes but it’s pushing it as a have a long drive to work. Any suggestions? Also, is the there a line of products you recommend where you can get deep conditioner, leave in, low poo shampoo etc, start this?
I have 3 of those cowlicks 😑 I cover one and another pops out lol.
What do you recommend for a haircut? Layers? All one length? Not sure what to do as I begin my Curly Girl journey.
Do you have a full video on what your normal hair routine is like?
I love your hair. I'm ready to do this!!!!! tfs
idk if you've done a video like this but could you do one on curly girl friendly professional hairstyles? I know pulling back in a harsh pony isnt good for hair but i'd like to see what other ways to pull it back without damaging it might be
A looser bun/ponytail with a soft hairtie that won't break your hair(so for example a scrunchie) is fine actually! you just don't want it to pull your hair back too hard because that could cause breakage
your hair looks gorgeous!
unofallenangel 🥰🤗
I’m transitioning to my very wavy hair. I wash my shoulder length hair at night and let it dry naturally. It’s a mess when I wake up. How do I preserve the curls while sleeping?
watch maines by mel. either a silk pillow or a silk bonnet, or both!
👆👍 Also pineapple your hair with a silk/satin scrunchie. Game changer for me.
How long do these waves last? I get similar results when I use bouncecurl gel but the waves lose definition after a few hours
You have amazing hair, and I love your videos! How do you get your hair cut? I’d love to see you go to the stylist, or know what you ask for.
Check out my Hair Cut Video! 🤗
My abbreviated wash day is no styling, then the next morning, spray in some salt spray and scrunch
Nice and easy!
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney alternatively do the same thing with Curlsmith Effortless Waves spray. It works on either wet or dry hair so it’s great for refreshing or when I didn’t have the time or energy to style on wash day
I'm definitely going to try this out! When in the shower, do you also wash your hair upside down?
Caitlin Hubbard cool! Please let me know how it goes! I shampoo right side up. But apply the conditioner upside down!
Courtney, you didn't say... did you help your sister? Did you help her frizz? Has her hair changed?
My first video on this channel is of me styling my sisters hair! She was so sweet to let me. Yes the curly girl method has really helped her!
Velvet locks. Perfect genetics😊
I think its because she holds it up when washing the conditioner out. It re-clumps up if that makes sense.
So sorry if this was already asked: have you ever done this without diffusing? If so, what happened? Sometimes I don’t have that 15!!
thenacat shoot I haven’t tried it without diffusing! I find that diffusing is something I do when I style my hair. When I go product free I do tend to air dry and that may actually be a faster routine. But if I’m adding any stylers to me hair I will go a head and diffuse. It give me a better result I think. 🤷🏼♀️ sorry about that.
THANKS
This video may be too old for a response, but can this technique be done with a cream or gel?
So... no styling gel or moisturizer? Just mousse? How often do you use a moisturizer, if at all? Thank you in advance. Your hair looks amazing!
Does racking in product work for you, or does it break your curls?
This is sooo great! I've tried it just based off of your Instagram stories but it's super helpful to see it for real! Have you tried it with other stylers? I dint have innersense foam, is there a good alternative to it?
Casey Truman I have used other foams and they work great!!!! My faves are the Giovanni mousse and the Pantene mousse!
Casey Truman I’m so glad the visual helps!
Ok I'll try those! Thanks 😊
Courtney(or anyone!)...what other stylers would you recommend for this routine?
I love seeing how others take care of their curly hair!! My hair is a bit thicker and MUCH curlier, so if i were to scrunch like this, I don't think I'd be able to get enough product into my hair to keep it from going frizzy. So cool to see this though!!
Also, I already use the hover defuse method too :D Mel is fantastic with her curly hair knowledge!!
Do you think this would work well with a gel instead of a mousse?
If you have long hair does it matter for curl pattern? My hair it to my elbows. I like having long hair. It dries wavy and straight combo. I have never done curly girl method stuff. I do typically air dry and have never died my hair. My hair like yours was board straight until teen years. I assume I have similar 2a,b and maybe some C patterns. Roots are always FLAT and my hair gets weighed down and oily easily. I wash about 2-3 times a week but hair is oily by day 3 for sure so those are pony tail days!
Oh and I work in surgery and HAVE to wear a scrub HAT over my head 10+ hours a day all day while at work thus making my hair more oily and frizzy...
EL COLOR DE TU CABELLO ES TAN BONITO !
Not sure this has been asked, but do you also shampoo upside down in your shower in the same way as with the faucet in the bath? Or rightside up? Just getting started over here!
When in the shower I will shampoo right side up. But then I condition upside down! It helps with root volume!
what about just air drying my hair?
Also, my hair has no porosity! literally can sit in room temperature water forever and never sinks!
help?
The cup test actually is not accurate for porosity measuring. You should watch Manes By Mell's video on porosity. It explains a lot :)
I recommend watching manes by Mell (like the person above )porosity video cause the test isn’t accurate :)
Do you wash/cowash every day? If not how do you style on non wash days?
One more question: I shower every evening and don’t wash my hair every time. I’ve been wetting my hair but no shampoo then let it air dry. Or I pin it up and it just gets damp. Not sure if I should use a shower cap? I ordered the silk pillow case you suggested.
I don't use a shower cap either! I just let it get a bit damp when I shower and don't wash my hair. Not big deal! I do try an make sure it is dry before I lay down. That helps keep things from getting weird and wonky in the morning.
Could you hair dry. And then scrunch the crunch?
How often do you wash your hair?
