    Thank you so much for this series! I just swapped out the dying TR580 in my 2014 Forester and followed your videos step by step. I watched the videos a couple of times and then printed the transcripts out to use as a checklist. The swap was a success, and the 'new' transmission makes the car feel like new again!
    As a quick note for those who do a transmission re-learning procedure using a scan tool after a swap like this... My first couple of tries failed because I didn't lift the car up so that all four wheels were in the air before running the procedure. Also, the emergency brake needs to be on during the process, and mine was a little loose, so I tightened the cable up (super quick and easy to do -- search YT if you don't know how). Once I did these things the scan tool completed the re-learning without issue.
    Thanks again for all the effort you took to film each step of the process. I ran the old tranny for just over 20k with it ticking. Eventually, the ticking became louder to the point that the car was getting looks whenever I'd pull into a parking lot, so it was time to swap it out. I'm super pleased with the results and have your video series to thank for it!

      Hey there, what computer/scan tool did you use to do the transmission relearn? I have seen elsewhere that it can only be done on a dealer level tool, but I'm hoping that I can use a third party tool.

      @@MiniTruckMattI used an XTool A30M bluetooth unit that plugs into the OBD port and connects to their smartphone app. I think it think it may have cost around $150 for the tool and that includes lifetime updates for all of their supported vehicles.
      I was skeptical when I bought the A30M, since it's pretty much the cheapest of their lineup, but it's the real deal and does a ton of stuff.

    What a great set of videos. Good descriptions. Good editing. The extra arrows and numbers on screen also very helpful. And thanks for including mistakes. Id likely repeat them otherwise. I found great chunks of metal on the magnet in mine. Bugger! Not the solenoid problem I was hoping for when I bought the car.

      Haha I just bought a subaru with a mystery transmission problem as well. I also hoped that it would be a solenoid issue, but here I am.

    I will need to replace the gasket between the engine block and my transmission. Do you need to drain the transmission fluid to do that?

    Hey man, wondering if you can help me out. My parents got a 2014 Impreza transmission to swap into a 2015 forester thinking it would be a direct swap, but they’re unsure. They’re both the tr580. We think the computer may be different

      Without researching or asking a Subaru expert (justanswer is a great place), I would come up with the same conclusion.

      Forester is compatible with outback
      Impreza with Crosstrek
      They are one letter off I think in the parts number

    Hey what’s up don’t know if y’all will answer me but me and my dad swapped a 2013 Impreza tranny for another one same year crashed in the rear . And we have a lot of codes on it is there something we missed ? Do we need to take to a dealer or subaru only mechanic or something?car is driving amazing and sounds amazing

      Is there some software on the computer that dealer installed for when you change the transmission?

    What's the story behind this car and how long did the original TR580 last? Also, curious why the coolant needs to be drained. Thanks!

      This vehicle was bought with the knowledge that it had transmission issues. (mileage was over 180,000) We had plans to replace a solenoid to fix the issue and worse case scenario, replace the transmission. We replaced the solenoid and it seemed to be fixed until winter came and the car had no AWD just front tires spinning. We replaced another solenoid which gave the car AWD but also torque binding. (torque binding is when the front and rear wheels are locked together and bind when turning) After lots of tests and research we believe the transfer clutch failed. We had a few options, rebuild the tail end of the transmission, swap to a used transmission with lower miles, or send it to the dealer which would be expensive. Since transmission rebuilding is tricky to get just right, and a few other factors, we decided to swap the transmissions. At the time of swap the vehicle had 189575 miles.
      Yes the coolant! The idea was with that was to not make a mess when removing the coolant line from the throttle body with that. (also it is in the factory repair manual)
      Thank you for your questions!
      I hope this all makes sense.

      @@endeavorautorepair Just for the record, these transmissions are very reliable and easily go under 500,000 miles. BUT they need to be monitored, namely, change the transmission oil every 50-60 thousand miles. It seems that the previous owner of the car simply did not service this CVT, which led to his death. The Subaru CVT is currently the most reliable CVT on this planet!

    • @endeavorautorepair
      @endeavorautorepair  Рік тому

      I would have to agree that most of these transmissions are very reliable, the years 2012-2017 being known for the most transmission failure. And servicing is an absolute must on these. But generally Toyotas launch gear design would last longer and Honda is also above Subaru in general CVT reliability.

    what fluids did you drain? I was told I needed to get diff. oil and I am not sure why. Im doing a 2014 crosstrek instead tho.

    • @endeavorautorepair
      @endeavorautorepair  Рік тому +2

      The Crosstrek is very similar if not the same. The front differential is built into the transmission, and will need to be filled if it has been drained. Part 6 of this series deals with fluids. One more thing, if you search how much fluid to put in your going to get an answer of about 5-7 quarts of CVTF for a drain and fill. Most junkyards drain fluids thoroughly including the torque converter. I ended up putting in 12-14 quarts of CVTF and 1-2 quarts diff fluid in the thing.

    Did you replace with same transmission part #?

    • @endeavorautorepair
      @endeavorautorepair  2 роки тому

      Yes, it was the exact same part number. I believe you can use the transmissions from 2014 to 2016, which have similar, but different part numbers. (That's what I remember anyway)

      @@endeavorautorepair okay. So I own a 2014 impreza. And have been looking for used cvt transmissions. I've seen a few 2015 and 2016 transmissions for sale around me. These are the same body type as my model. Do you think the other years will work.
      I know you mentioned this above. But I guess I'm looking for more confirmation and guidance

    • @endeavorautorepair
      @endeavorautorepair  Рік тому

      I couldn't say definitively, but it would probably work. You may want to use the TCM from the newer transmission. It may be good to ask a professional Subaru mechanic on this one.

  • @baekinflight

    So... I recently had a transmission replaced by Subaru through warranty and they forgot to put differential gear oil. Is this part of the process when you replace the transmission?

    • @endeavorautorepair
      @endeavorautorepair  2 роки тому

      Yes, when you replace a tr580 transmission or similar you must at least check the fluid (if junkyard hasn't drained it) but most likely have to fill it.

    • @endeavorautorepair
      @endeavorautorepair  2 роки тому

      I would expect that if the differential would be heavily worn without fluid. You could try adding fluid and see if the noise goes away.
