This video saved me over $1k. I was moving across the country when my solenoid started going out. Was quoted $1850 to fix it. With the help of this vid and a lucky memorial parts sale at Subaru. Was able to fix my car for $750 full service including a cvt fluid change. If you read these comments thanks a bunch dude! Appreciated!
Awesome! Glad to help!!
I have an impreza is it located up like in the video?
@@MrSubaru1387 this kit will fit a 2014 forester? I went to the website, started order and went to verify my year and said it didn’t fit. I confirmed it is a tr580 with the access on top of transmission.
Couldn't you just have replaced the Torque converter solenoid instead of the entire valve body?
@@funstuff2008 ...Soobawoo no longer sells individual parts for this. Have to buy as a whole unit...smh. Amazon in the other hand has all solenoids....
Excellent video. I used it, plus a Dorman video to replace only the lockup solenoid that Dorman now offers. 2014 Forester with 169,000 miles. Only other service trans has ever had was a fluid change at 100,000 miles.
I'm a retired auto tech of 48 years with a racecar background. This video is the best instructional video I have seen. You definitely are very good at what you are doing. Thank you for putting this video and many others together.
I am definitely looking at $1500 to replace at Subaru dealer and 2-3 week minimum wait and this is my only vehicle (2018 Subaru Forester). I have watched some decent videos on UA-cam on this job but this video makes it much easier to understand and follow. I'm not a genius mechanic but this seems easier than I once thought without special tools...Great video and thanks for the inspiration! I'll let you know if I ended up doing the work and how it went or if my wife convinced me to trade the thing in.😅
In my country, the mechanics will change solenoid inside the valve body it cost around $280
Thanks for making this video
Unfortunately Subaru doesn't sell the solenoids separately
@@MrSubaru1387 There are some aftermarket ones sold online. I got a year out of one, then it failed, replacement only lasted a month. They were about 100./solenoid. Purchased a new oem valve body and its been all good since. Thank You for your vids.
@@64scrambler the aftermarket ones are 🗑️
@@MrSubaru1387 Well, agreed... but getting a good year out of one for a couple hours of my time changing it out wasn't bad. Def, a crapshoot and would never use one in someone else's car.
Я в TR690 2 соленоиды сам перематывал .гидроблок дорогой покупать ..спасибо за ваши видео очень помогли
I have a 2010 Subaru Impreza outback sport! Great vids!
Except in Canada, Subaru won't sell a valve body to anyone but a dealer. I needed a new valve body for my impreza but I couldn't procure a valve body from anyone. If I had the time, I might have been able to source one from the US. Basically, if you need a valve body up here, it's set up so you have to get the work done by a dealer. But this video would have set me up to do it myself. Next time.
With P0971 valve body Code is ok at drive about 50 miles before the repair is made trying to save money on a $250 tow bill
What is the process of training your transmission after the valve body replacement? Does a computer need to be involved for anything, or is it just going through the gears in a specific way?
Great vids MRSUBARU, helped me isolate the problem with an XV i have here in Australia. Unfortunately Subaru Parts Deals dont ship internationally, another very similar name Subaru Parts Deal dont either. The latter did a kit version with all your parts & oil listed for a very reasonable price. Here's an example of how we're being royally shafted here in Aust, i've done the $ conversion for the valve body alone our local stealer asking $2,480 USD .. sad but true
Thanks for what you do. You made that look so easy.
You told me about SybaryPartsDeals the same day my 2007 Forester blew it's Fel-Pro head gaskets. Nice timing, Mr. Subaru!
Great to know about Subaru parts pro deals Robert, darn it I sure wish I waited on that back half of the air filter cover it’s the back half the MAF screws into and what happened is the little retaining clip for the power steering hose broke off on me ,I ordered it from elk Grove Subaru it took those clowns three months to get but then again maybe there’s a backorder situation on certain parts for SOA?
I’ll use them for my 60k service! Thanks!
Great DIY with all the information I need. Thanks!
Thats awesome...i wish i could get these parts donated..ive been trying to save and buy one part at a time..i just cant get the valve body..i bought a 200 dollar one that was no good..changed just the solenoid..sucks..its like a thousand now for the valve body..anyway..thank you for the video. If i had a good oem valve body i would have gotten it done right..anyway..thanks man have a good day
Great job man. I always thought that my valve body was located at the I can definitely do that job myself 😊😊
Yet. another excellent video!!
Any recommendations to remove the cover if it didn’t come off so easy?
One question where the Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid goes.
@MrSubaru1387 could you do a video on the truth or myth of having to change all 4 tires at the same time on subarus and why
It's because of the AWD system. Any AWD system you want to replace all 4 tires at the same time, this is because if one tire has more tread than the rest it can cause the transfer case to bind and destroy it.
Any chance of doing videos on the 15’-19’ legacy/outback TR690 transmission?
What’s the name of that electric wrench? I needa have one!!!!
How do I identify which transmission is on my 2019 Outback, as well which CBT fluid to use?
Thanks.
Awesome, now feels like a piece of cake.
Second time replacing my valve body, first one lasted me a little of 100k replaced second at 230k now it's engaging in drive but won't move, ugh
Another great video 👍 👍
I’m trying to watch the video on your watch lol
My 2017 Impreza seems to be having systems of a bad valve body no check engine lights, is this common? Car has 180,000 mile ont it.
Do you have to drain the fluid to change the internal harness? Mine is pinched
I have a 2015 Subaru Forester there is a creaking noise when we are turning or driving on the streets I don't know if it's coming from the suspension what do you think needs to be replaced?
i tried doing it, but the darn AT fluid light and the other dash board lights are still on, and now its jolting when i put it in drive or reverse
Does this require any kind of reprogramming?
Yes. A relearn procedure with a good scan tool or SSM. According to the FSM.
How to change the solenoid only?
About a month ago, my 2014 Forester Premium 2.5l threw on its lights and the check engine code read P2764. I decide to just try replacing the solenoid to save money. After replacement, car drives just great for 3 weeks, until one day I'm driving through the neighborhood and all the lights come back on. I'm reading p2764 again.
I reset the codes. Drive some more, and it comes back on. Car behaves similarly to the last time this happened. Now I investigate, and the solenoid is reading around 12 ohms, the same as it was when it was new. But I'm still getting the 2764 lock up torque converter error. I've double checked that I'm testing the correct solenoid.
What should be my next step here? Should I assume that the aftermarket solenoid I've used is faulty, and find another one? Or should I assume that my entire valve body should be replaced?
Thanks for any advice and I appreciate your videos!
Will this work for a 2017 legacy 2.5 I premium?
so when I had replaced my valve body (subaru gave me a $650 coupon and the dealership took off $150) the dealership told me I had to do cvt learning procedure everytime I do a drain and fill on the cvt fluid (they did the cvt learning procdure as part of cost of ther repair which was $1,000 total), I felt like that was a litte over kill advice. What do you think MrSubaru1387, do you have the to do the cvt learning procedure after every cvt drain and fill? Also, what do you think about using AMSOIL CVT Fluid instead of the OEM Fluid? Thanks for your replys.
No and no to Amsoil.
What newton meter brand are you using?
What are the symptoms of a failing valve body?
In the case of my 2014 crosstrek, it is the dreaded "christmas tree light" dashboard...my mechanic (not subaru shop) thinks if he replaces the valve body I'll be good, but my wife's 2013 legacy had the same damn thing happen, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do...
what torque wrench is that
Is this the same for 2015 subaru legacy?
Legacy should have a TR690. Which CVT do you have?
@@MrSubaru1387 not sure. I was trying to figure out if the valve body is underneath the car or the hood
Check the id plate in the door jamb. Will say TR580, top. Or TR690, bottom.
2016 legacy, I'm getting the lights on the instrument panel for the valve body, but no codes and no transmission symptoms
Lights for the valve body??? What light(s)? Check engine light? Did you scan it? What codes?
@@MrSubaru1387 Dude, did not expect a reply from you but from another commenter.. No codes, only A.T. oil temp light flashing, electronic parking brake warning light, BRAKE light on, vehicle dynamics light on. It's intermittent even when car is cold, mostly when I put the car in park the lights come on.
The way I understood it was those lights are an indication of trans solenoid/ valve boby replacement. Thanks again!
No. They’re indicator that there’s an issue. Any issue. Anytime the check engine light comes on/ a code is active the cruise disables and so does eyesight on newer Subarus.
So scanned and no fault codes??
It would have been nice to know what prompted this repair. Or what was the symptoms or problems it was causing.
thank you dude. just got this done in my own garage in about 2 hours. this video made it like cakework. you the man
Very well done video , helped me out a ton by giving me the confidence to do this job myself. Thanks for saving me a bunch of cash!
I have been reading alot about this in preparation for changing the valve body on my wife's impreza. Some of the forums say to leave the car sit overnight to drain properly, is this not necessary?
Thanks man, I bought just the solenoid on eBay and did it today. Fixed it! Had a little extra fluid around, recently did a 5 quart change. Just added it in the top. Easy way I found to get the cover off was used the ground wire bolt with the 12mm head and fasten down the box end of a wrench and pull up. If you do just the solenoid be prepared for the ground connector to break. Ez fix on that though.
Thanks for this info, I just had these codes show up yesterday on my 2013 outback with 113k miles on it. Do you have any links for what solenoid is needed or links to a video? Ironically I just did a double CVT fluid flush a month ago. I am pretty handy with a UA-cam video helping me lol.
Do you mind if I ask what your symptoms were for your bad solenoid? I'm considering this as a potential fix myself for extreme delayed shifting and gear slippage at stops. Can you replace just the solenoid, or do you need to buy the entire valve body assembly like the video shows?
@samsonburque114 Please respond if you know!
My wife's 2013 impreza sport just had all the lights on the dash light up while driving. Local garage diagnosed a weak solenoid in the valve body. They referred the replacement to the dealer. On contact the dealer quoted $1,900 for the valve body replacement and a total of $2,500 for the job. Only have 175,000 kms on the vehicle and have changed the transmission fluid twice. My wife drives very conservatively. Sorta pissed at Subaru right now. We had a mazda for 15 years that ran like brand new after 260,000 kms and is still running well and being driven by a family member. Never had any issues with that vehicle. Almost seems like Subaru are engineered to fail. We won't be buying another Subaru that's for sure.
Neat, precise, perfection. We need more like you!
Thanks for this. It was a little weird ( a bit meta if you will) watching the video on your watch upside down. 😀
Just wanted to thank you so much because your video enabled me to get the valve body out of my 2014 XV Crosstrek. I had mistakenly removed the two nuts not knowing which silver screws to remove. But after watching your video it was clear, and I was able to remove it. So thanks again.

SUBARU, MI NOMBRE ES: DAVID ORNELAS, Y TENGO UN 2013 CROSS TRECK CON EL MISMO PROBLEMA, DE LA CAJA DE VALVULAS, Y SEGUI TUS INSTRUCCIONES EXACTAMENTE, Y TODO ME SALIO BIEN, CREO QUE TRABAJA MEJOR QUE ANTES. MUCHAS PERO MUCHISIMAS GRACIAS. ME AHORRE MUCHO DINERO. Thank you Mr. Subaru, your help was so valuable and saved me a lot of $$$$$$.. God bless you for your time to explain all this. MEXICO LINDO Y QUERIDO, Y VIVA MR. SUBARU!!!!
MR. SUBARU, THE DEALER TOLD ME TO REPLACE THE HARNESS TOO. AND I DID IT.
donde compraste las piezas?
What are those pliers you use at 6:30? Look like some time savers!
Does this stop the lurching from initial acceleration?
I have a 2014 forester, 136k miles. Only FWD works. My wife admitted that the dash lights have lit up on her a couple times previosly over the last couple years but always go away. She said it only happens in below freezing temps. It has been this way for a good while. Only symptoms are occasional dash lights and no AWD. Would prolonged driving in FWD only have caused more damage to the CVT than is worth repairing with a valve body replacment? Does anybody sell individual replacment AWD soliniods? My scanner tool isnt picking up any codes either.
I did this on my 2013 impreza last year with a valve body from a wrecked donor off of ebay after watching Eric's video. I don't recall pulling the valve body. Your video is excellent too. I am so grateful for creators like yourself.
How much did you spend? I m having the same issue with same year hatchback impreza
Help
660 bucks American for the valve body and 40 bucks canadian for seals, gaskets and a half litre of fluid.
There are rebuilt valve bodies online now for as low as 300 bucks American so that could make it easier financially.
@@kevinunknown1747rebuilt with garbage Chinese solenoids, stay far away from these.

Question, The waning lights (matching combination related to this issue) only came on once in my 2013 Impreza 2.0L Limited. It has been a week since the issue and all ok so far. No limp mode, warning lights etc. I have not had it scanned yet (OBD tested). Could it also be due a faulty switch stop lamp (only question is the AT Temp light was on)? Any feedback would be great. Thanks
Good stuff. Just finished my 2016 Impreza cvt valve body replacement. Couldn’t have done it without this.
@mrsubaru1387 Will this process be the same or similar for a 2014 XV Crosstrek? I think it looks pretty close from comparing the video to mine. Parts are ordered, I'm going to try this!
I have a 2015 Subaru Outback 3.6 and its leaking from the the transmission pump gasket...is this a frequent issue?
Also, if I am doing this, should I also do the valve body replacement as a while your in there repair? The valve body seema to come up often as a item of concern...
For the TR690 and the Throttle Body, can you just undo the 4 x 10mm bolts and remove the Throttle abody without clamping off the coolant hoses? I want to clean the full T.B. and replace the gasket withiut havinf to buy two hose clamps
I’m a simple guy. I see a mrsubaru video and I hit like and watch it all the way through!
I'm trying figure out whether get full valve body or solenoid, but are all those solenoids different or use same part number? i have p0971
man i remember working for subaru back in 2012 and doing these on brand new outback's that just rolled off the line, still got the big plastic sheet which is a PITA to use if you try to, but when you're doing some of the first of these replacements and its on a PDI, and the entire shop is watching, you have to use it lol
Hi, what symptoms? Codes? Mine is shuddering at low speed low power speeding up but no codes (?) so not sure exactly where is the problem, new fluid in, memory wipe out, trans acting good for about an hour then start same issue. if memory erased again working good for an hour then start same issue. Thanks If Mr subaru saved you a ton like I know he did me send him some money love Like i did :)
Thank you so much!!!
Great video and very informative! I have a follow up question - I live in Australia driving a 2014 Subaru Forester, will this part work in the right-hand drive car (yes, we drive on the other side of the road down under!) if I order the part from the US? Thanks heaps :)
Does this vid apply to a 2013 Outback 2.5L CVT?
For top end service on a 2011 outback premium 2.5 can I use the plug on the passenger side intake. Thanks
Always awesome. The best Subaru repair channel on the net.....one of the very best across the board
Wow, thanks!
Should be add some cvt fluid on top of the new valve body ? Before we put the lid again
Awesome video, a lot of info I learn today. Thanks for teaching us, keep it up 👍
im i the only one who wants to see the green connector again.....unhooked under the pulled valve body...
How long should the transmission itself last after replacing the valve body?
From what I've heard replacing the valve body adds another 100k+ miles to the lifespan, as long as you replace the fluid every 30k miles.
Thank you for showing all the work done. My 2016 Forester valve body just failed (138K) and it was nice to watch how to do all that.
Ditto. My 2016 Forester just had this failure at 135K. I'll try to find someone to do this, or last option, do it myself.

Hello Mr. Subaru my name is Delores Smoke I put my auto scanner on my car it read P0977 shift cylinder be controlled high circuit Subaru in Little Rock said that is a body valve that will cost me $1100 my other reading was a P0 303 cylinder three misfire detected the labor is 150 an hour and the diagnostic is $120 do that sound about right I heard a lot of your talking about a Subaru in Little Rock that they did people cars wrong on purpose I was going to them but I didn’t feel comfortable no one else will touch my Subaru in prison so I have no choice yet to go to them he said he would have to replace or install a full body valve
Eight Newton meters that’s roughly 5.9 foot pounds.
Those plastic bag cover that comes with it makes good panchos 😂
i have code p2762 and replaced valve body code is still there any help?
Robert does this transmission have a vent tube to vent to outside atmosphere also does the 5EAT have one? When I decided to do the differential myself in the front I saw the vent tube for the front differential but there’s another vent tube next to it and I’m assuming it’s for the transmission!
As far as I recall they both have vents.
Hi Mr. Subaru, My car is Subaru Forester 2014, it shows light on Check Engine, At Oil Temp (Flashing), ABS, Hill Assistant, Stable Drive. Scan tools shows P2764, P0700 ($7E8 and $7E9). It is TR580 CVT fluid. I plan to change the solenoid or in case will replace a valve body. I have a question: Must I change the transmission fluid after the valve body/ solenoid replacement? Since I will do replacement by myself, and drive the car to Subaru mechanic and let them change the fluid. Thanks for your videos too!
Hey what's up MrSubaru, would you recommend sourcing the solenoids and replacing them? I got the light display and when I had the codes pulled it was for the valve body. My local dealership quoted me approximately $2800. I was thinking about replacing the valve body but when I started to research the procedure, I came across some forums that led me to this video and also said that the solenoids could also be replaced. what are your thoughts about this? love your videos, looking forward to a response!
Your repair videos are top class. It's great that you share the part numbers also - this info is not easy to come by for the lay person.
This video is a lifesaver. I just had my 2012 Subaru with the TR580 CVT throw codes P0700 and P2764 over the weekend. We were 100 miles from home, and my son in law rented a car hauler and picked us up from the side of the road, so I drove less than 8 miles (to find a pull off on a 2 lane highway) after the car started throwing errors. Once I was home and in the garage, I pulled the codes. This morning the local Subaru dealer told me for these codes it would be $5000 to replace both the valve body and torque converter, claiming that the torque converter had to be coming apart to cause the valve body solenoid failure.
From this video and others, it sure seems the dealer is feeding me some bull. I am mostly happy to see that the valve body can be replaced without having the car on a lift, meaning I can do it myself.
Could there be any truth to what the dealer told me over the phone about the torque converter falling apart and causing this code? The car only has 115K miles on it...
Valve body price in Subaru Australia for my 2014 xv $4470 +gaskets this must be rip off price, i don't know how much they would charge to fit maybe another $1000 , not happy with Subaru
Silly question, 2014 outback 2.5. How do I know what trans is in it? It is the cvt. Getting some jolting while accelerating, no sort of codes what so ever. Trans serviced last week, been doing it for the past few months
I just had this replaced at dealer $2400. Luckily, got warranty extension and was comped. Now they said found leak in cam carriers. Estimate $4400. No warranty cover. My local mechanic won't touch subarus. My husband had some experience. Is it possible to do this
You don’t have a traveling mobile company they call you when you come fix their car I wish something like that existed I know it’s an old video yet it helps me out
greetings mr subaru I am starting to replace my valve body on a 2015 outback and I found this on the valve body cover (2015 SUBARU OUTBACK TRANSMISSION ECU CONTROL MODULE 30919AD331 OEM) any recommendations on how to remove it to finish the job without any problem?? ? This is the first time I've tried to do this replacement. Thank you very much for all the good information you provide on your channel !!!!!!!!
Great video. Some small differences for my 2015 Outback Limited (no pitch stopper, but it does have the bracket), TCM is on top of the valve body cover, and the wiring harness includes ALL of the associated wires, so you can't just disconnect the cables and lift the cover off. So what I did was once I could remove the cover, I disconnected the connecter inside the VB, unscrewed the round connector on the top of the cover, and fished the connector up through. Just about everything else was identical. Saved me a significant amount of $$$. Thanks for the video!
Do we need to do the relearn after the valve body replacement?
Keep up these videos! I've been following for some time now and you have saved me a significant amount of money.
Curious if this same valve body is in 2013 subaru outback? I know other years its the TR690, but from some reading its very conflicting. curious what you think!
I have the same problem with my Subaru Crosstrek 2019 but the problem is reprogramming question is, does it come already plug and play or would have to program it after installation?
This is also another good example ( as All of your video's are ) of why in the eyes of just about any dealership *You Will Never Be a Good Service Tech For Them.* You will Never make enough money to satisfy them. *Wear This Like A Badge Of Honor". They charge $150/hr. for full book hrs but demand the tech slam the job out in half time or less.
You are too Thorough and Focused . . . as you should be and . . . We hope you never change. They want $peed at a level which *cannot be done unless the tech cuts every corner possible* for maximum profit and in many cases afterwards the car Is Still As Broke as when it came in. On top of that you may find something else is broke or is breaking soon after. Gotta Love Little Johnny . . .
The tech's are pissed that they don't make enough $$$ and . . . probably don't.
Nationwide they are perhaps in need of 3,000 tech's and many of those who are still on the job need to be Closely Re Evaluated and/or Retrained. Also, some sort of Local Gov't QC Insp. for Dealership Repairs needs to be created and I mean $$$ome kind of QC with Teeth in it. *But That's Just Me and My Stupid Way of Thinking*
Can we get a part/tool number for those electrical pigtail blue players your using?? I didn’t see them on your Amazon shop!
Local Subaru dealer here said that replacing valve body could cause negative issues to cvt. They won't replace valve body. Any truth to this?
After valve body replacement can 2018 Subaru Outback drive 25 miles to dealer to do transmission fluid change and relearn? I’m concerned transmisión won’t work without relearn.
This is great stuff. It covers the valve body but what else could go wrong with this trans? Maybe the chain? My 2018 trek has the cvt (I assume the TR580) and I am wondering what else I should be expecting to fail.
Anything mechanical can fail at anytime. The VB assembly, more less the solenoids are a known failure point. Not much else is a common issue.
Where is the oil plug applied to a CVT in a 2015 Subaru Wrx?. I need to add oil in the transmission and I don't know where’s the plug.
You can actually leave the throttle body in place. There's plenty of room. Good job!
agree, I did the same. But its probably worth cleaning that thing anyway!
