Forget Austin vs McMahon. Cornette vs Russo is the TRUE rivalry of the Attitude Era!

  • @brianm2881

Cornette tells a great story where he was talking to Russo backstage about the format of that night's RAW, and he was saying to Russo that there were too many DQs (it might have been almost every match). Russo responded with, "DQ, schmee-Q! Nobody cares!" and Cornette got hot and got right in Russo's face over that flippant response. Russo got scared and complained to McMahon, leading to a caution for Cornette.
It isn't only a mere difference in booking philosophy. Cornette has more serious allegations against Russo such as being indirectly responsible for Owen Heart's death because it was Russo's idea to make him the Blue Blazer again. He also hates Russo and Ed Ferrara for doing the Oklahoma character which pretty much just made fun of JR's Bell's Palsy.

Funny how the RuBros don't even know that Cornette wrote the TV formats and timed the TV shows for the WWF during Russo's time on creative. He wrote, directed, and produced the entire TV shows for SMW and OVW. Russo could never do that, he's completely clueless about the technical side of television.

There's a radio interview with Russo right before he took control of WCW, and he basically blueprints everything he'd do wrong as head of creative for them during his tenure. I wish I'd have saved it, because it's hilarious.

      @henrygvidonas9573 Ha!
      "RuBros" that's hysterical! 😄
I especially love this term because the times that I HAVE seen an interview with Vince Russo, he was constantly saying, "Bro! Bro! Bro!", like a high-schooler who NEVER grew up.
I agree with Cornette that the biggest thing that Russo had going for him was that the WWF has Steve Austin and Dwayne Johnson, and their stars come out of nowhere, back to back.
Vince McMahon used to keep in check a lot of Russo's ideas, as even VKM understood that you can kill business by "hotshoting" the booking too much.
It's a shame he (VKM) forgot that years later.
And we all saw what Russo did in both WCW and TNA when let off his leash.
He was just a "shock-jock" when it came to booking.
      Russo is just clueless.

The Attitude Era is a lot like Classic Rock radio. All you get nowadays is Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc, so you remember it so fondly. But if you were actually listening to what 2 hrs of radio REALLY sounded like in the 70s, you'd think "well 30min of that was incredible, but man, that other 90 sucked."
And that's Vince Russo in a nutshell... at his very best... with McMahon to approve his stuff... with Jim and Bruce to "wrestle-fy" it. With JR to sell it. With Austin, Rock, Vince, Foley, and HHH to go out and do it.... And Sable walking around in pasties.

I was 16 in 1997, so peak age for the demographic they were aiming for and yeah, I enjoyed some moments here and there and had fun talking about Raw with my friends on Tuesday mornings but it was true garbage. It was only popular because it fit right in with the rest of the lame late 90's "aggro nu-metal/ Hot Topic/South Park/Jerry Springer/ Insane Clown Posse white trash" bullshit that was going on at the same time. Russo doesn’t seem to understand the concept that YES, everyone knows fundamentally that wrestling isn’t real. That’s how we can see a man take multiple headshots but still be standing. (As MMA has shown everyone, one pop to the head is all it really takes.) So the viewer knows it’s fake. But we all buy into it for the story. And a swerve occasionally can serve to wake a complacent audience up. But as the director of “the Sixth Sense”’s career illustrates, when you bank on the swerve every damn time, people tune out.
According to Russo, plays are a dead art from cuz we have film now bro!
It’s two different perspectives: Cornette sees the world through the eyes of a wrestler looking out at the audience, whereas Russo identifies with the audience. He’s the outsider looking in.

Vince Mcmahon as filter argument just does not work when taking a look at what we was given between 1993-1996 without Pat Patterson around creatively and what we got in the last 22 years Vince Mcmahon was in the charge...

I can understand the viewpoint from McMahon, who I think had the right idea to bring an outsider in for fresh ideas but meanwhile having old school guys like Cornette, Ross and Prichard to reinforce the lineage of what makes wrestling what it is. What I find infuriating about him is he takes credit for what went right and anything that went wrong with his idea is not his fault. It seems to me, though, that what Cornette hated most about Russo is that he just refused to understand the craft of what the trio of old schoolers tried to teach him. Honestly, Vince Russo is the Ultimate Warrior of bookers. He had a quick rise and some unprecedented success, but he never saw pro-wrestling as anything to take seriously and has a one track mind on what it is to him. Which is why the success could not be sustained.

You had a whole team around him, including Vince McMahon, Jim, himself, Jim, Ross, Bruce, Pritchard, etc. that had to take Vince Russo‘s ideas and actually make them make sense.
The proof is in the pudding because you look at what happened to TNA. That company completely fell apart under Vince Russo‘s creative direction. Same thing with WCW. The times that it was just Vince Russo‘s raw idea. It failed miserably every time.
And Jim was right I mean the attitude error couldn’t last forever . How many times have we seen someone do a higher dive or jump then mankind did it hell at the sale and it just absolutely means nothing? Bumps like that or taken twice a month like 24 times a year practically and nobody gives a shit because it’s just been done. It’s why I think ultimately ECW was going to go away, no matter what happened financially because you can only push the envelope so far but before there’s no more envelope, you push that motherfucker off a cliff.

I get that writing and then adjusting can be help with making sure something that weakens the concept is less featured. However, people like Russo and (WWE for a long time) would be reliant on it, leading to concepts go absolutely nowhere, because they've become to used to aiming for that specific moment of gratification. Russo and now AEW rarely write anything that they aim for to follow a natural story arch and then conclude. Everything always just ends up suddenly dropped, as they've blown through everything, leading to nothing.
If you look at Wrestlemania 15, the Rock-Austin feud was enormous, but McMahon would be in more control over that. The rest of the card is filled with nothing happening matches, which is what Russo was tasked with. They are matches that would be on any Raw at the time or any PPV undercard. Wrestlemania is meant to be the conclusion of it all, where you have building for months to get towards. When Russo gets involved, none of that happens.

Hard disagree. Dude stated he knows he has anger issues and would not be in control of himself if they had a face to face. Takes self awareness to realize when you may not have full control of your emotions. If you never hated someone enough to understand that just be glad you have lived a nice life.

To Evan's point at the top of the episode, if Mike Tenay is the Professor of professional wrestling, Jim Cornette is it's Librarian.

Mr. Russo wants us to believe that he is a big factor in the WWE Attitude Era. This is the guy who came up with David Arquette becoming champion, The Brawl for it All, Ruining Mike Awesome and Bash at the Beach 2000. Nuff said.

The Boss is right about if you combined their talents they'd be great. We've seen it in action. If you combine weekly crazy storytelling and giving everyone something interesting to do with long term stories and the know how to build the big match you get Paul Heyman.

All Cornette was asking for was to have things make sense. In WCW Russo had Sting and Goldberg turn heel for no reason whatsoever. It made no sense, but Russo thought it was great storytelling.

Cornette was trying to push the Rock n Roll Express in the WWF in 1998. On his Kayfabe Commentaries Guest Booker he booked the Undertaker vs Terry Funk at Wrestlemania 18 in 2002. Nuff said about his booking philosophy.

I can listen to all of these same stories between Corny and Shitstain every single day. There was nothing new here and yet I ate it up just like I do every single time!
Like many I have a ton of interests in life and 80s-early 00s wrestling is just 1 of them (idc about mid 00s to present wrestling lol) but I don't think there is anything on YT I get more excited for than a good ol Corny and Shitstain discussion!!

It was a good point that while Vince was reinging him in, in WWE, he was very successful. But then when he had total control in WCW, he destroyed the company.

The Brawl For All could've worked if they didn't do Boxing. They had two UFC originals working for them. There was a legit grappler in that tournament. Who by the way the entire tournament was being made for in the first place. Because it totally makes sense to handicap the guy you're trying to push right? Hell one of the UFC guys was in that tournament. They even had a Karate Black Belt. The concept was fine because we've seen that Pro Wrestlers can learn how to fight. The execution is what ruined it.
