Vernon Reid is one of the most underrated guitarist ever. All the member of the band are great musician! As Living colour is one of most underrated band ever!! The "System" literally erased them from the glory, the success they deserved !! Greetings from Italy
So happy you took a deeper dive into Living Colour. Most everyone stops at Cult of Personality. It is a legendary song but not all they are. To this day one of the most underrated bands of their generation.
Preach! Corey Glover was an amazing vocalist and Vernon Reid was an absolute monster on the guitar. This band and their work are both criminally underrated.
Monsters at every position.... all masters of their craft. Not bound by any genre which probably contributed to them being so grossly underappreciated. You just couldn't pigeonhole them. Name another band with songs so vastly different... Solace of You, Austlander, Nothingness, Ugly Head, Times Up, Cult of Personality.... epic range.
You are NOT kidding. This actually got played on late 80s pop radio for a lil bit, and that's what turned me into a fan for life. I was only 10 yrs old. They are untouchable as musicians and leaders who are outsiders at the same time.
FUN FACT- There are two members of the band ANTHRAX in this video. Scott Ian (guitarist), is sitting next to the Glamour boys on the Subway wearing a baseball hat, and Frank Bello (Bass player), is in line standing next to the drummer when they are waiting in line to get into the club, and the glamour boys go down the chute (or wherever they went).
I still remember them performing this on Arsenio Hall’s old talk show & at the very end if it, Corey Glover turned toward the desk & playfully said “The truth hurts, doesn’t it, Arsenio?” Haha.
i was like 19 when this happened. i too remember it to this day. it was a throwback to earlier in that episode of Arsenio. they'd performed Cult of Personality, and then Arsenio was interviewing them. they got to cutting up and joking around, and the band said they'd perform one more song on the show that night. it was glamour boys, and "truth hurts, doesn't it, Arsenio?" haha loved it!
I was 15 when Vivid came out. I’ve bought it twice on cassette, once on CD, and now on iTunes. It’s a master piece and a Living Colour are the real deal. Glad you’ve got into them. As for Glamour Boy, it speaks to the shallowness of appearance and how it’s important to be authentic. After Cult of Personality, it’s their best. Cheers!
This is my favorite Living Colour song, and the video is awesome too. And yes, it's about shallow materialistic people who try to make it seem like they're living the life. Vernon Reid, the guitar player, is crazy talented.
*The Music Renaissance of the 1980s was an ERA of beautiful vibes from great artistic talent. Great time growing up in America with great music. Wishing and Praying on Great Musical Vibes on All Future Generations of All Kids in America.*
A message that the music industry went about undermining for a long time by overly rewarding artists that went with the image of being a dangerous black man with a gun. I think it has had a terrible impact on identity and creative freedom. Living Colour seem like they are from another planet, rather than just another time.
Good to see someone else asking for funny vibe the official video too not some lyric video.. please please please!!! And I’ve asked before for some King’s X Summerland and King please!!!
I am 66 year old white guy that has Loved this band since the beginning. Have their first 3 albums and still listen to them regularly. Their writing, performance and message is held in very high regard by the Rock World. I hope that todays younger audience will take the gift that they offer and have a rethink about what music can be...!
These guys are just awesome. I love the message's that they put out in the music. And their talent is just crazy. In the 80's I thought they were one of the best bands.
Living Colour retweeted some of your reviews! You would probably enjoy Elvis is Dead!!! And the new album, 2017-18, Shade, is a great metal blues album.
Remember this was at the end of the 80's, the decade of excess and promotion of the same. All the dudes in my hood were straight to the nines with the hottest fashion and none of them had any money. That's just how it was.
Jamal! I love your reaction videos. And i love this band! I have their vinyl records from way back. "Desperate people" is a must... And please check out Corey's "April rain". Love from Sweden. ❤
I had forgotten all about that song! I listened to them back in high school, and didn't put as much thought into the lyrics as you did today, and it was like discovering the song all over again! It's a different vibe from them, but a great song none the less! They are so damn talented!
Thanks for playing there! This was actually the follow-up hit to Cult of Personality - got lots of play on MTV, and even some radio play. It's got different vibe than Cult, but then listen to Vernon's guitar and that smooth bass (and the drums!); their songs don't waste a lyric, an instrument or a single note. To me, as a scrawny white teenager in '88-89, the Vivid album was a welcome kick in the teeth for my worldview. Played the hell out of these tracks.
Just discovered your channel. Loved Living Colour growing up. I happily gave up a couple hours sleep to watch past videos. New subscriber. Gonna tell everyone I know about your channel. Thank you, this was fun.
Also, Jamal, of you're digging Living Colour, you should definitely check out their cover of Talking Heads "Memories Can't Wait". Please, you won't regret it!!
I hear a distinct reggae influence in this song, especially in the bridge. Maybe it's the bass line, maybe it's the energy; I'm not sure. Anyone else hear it?
I loved this band! I had this album on cassette. They were so great and different than the "hair" bands that dominated the 80s. These guys and, "faith no more," I would listen to back to back all the time. So, Jamal, you gotta do faith no more's Epic! Great video, great song, probably the first time metal and rap were mixed together proper. Keep the videos coming, man. I love rediscovering so much great music.
L9ving your l8ving colour reviews ...love to see your thoughts on faith no more .."epic "....or maybe """everything's ruined .cheers love ya stuff....I suffer from anxiety and depression and watching you makes me relax 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸
The glamor boys whole life is a Gamble they might get over or fall flat on their face but if one does there's no need to worry another G- Boy will take his place. Living Color kicks ass! Open Letter to a Landlord is an incredible song also.
So glad I saw them live in 89. They were amazing. Next you should do Open Letter to a Landlord. They saw what gentrification was going to do to our neighborhoods in NYC when it seemed impossible for all of us to be priced out of the blocks our parents and grandparents lived on. Now rent on my old block is $3500 and new high rise buildings going up and blocking out the sun for the old 5 story walk ups.
I'm glad you found Living Colour. If you want to go somewhere you've never been ... try Funkadelik - " Maggot Brain ". I think you will literally be stunned.

Corey and Vernon are always in the Front of the mix but this track has muzz on bass and wilt Calhoun on drums at the front just killing that funky bassline and Carribean kickbeat that just makes you wanna groove!!!
Love the early stuff but Living Colour is still making great music! Why not bring it full circle and react to something from the last album (2017)! Freedom of Expression, Come On, Program, Blak Out or Inner City Blues perhaps? 🙏🏻
If you are open to suggestions? May I suggest Living Colour's Funny Vibe (Vivid) or Elvis Is Dead (Time's Up) Fishbone's Lying Ass B****, When Problems Arise or ?(Modern Industry). Cory is a great singer . The bass player is off the chart too. Drummer too!
So happy you took a deeper dive into Living Colour. Most everyone stops at Cult of Personality. It is a legendary song but not all they are. To this day one of the most underrated bands of their generation.
Absolutely!!
Preach! Corey Glover was an amazing vocalist and Vernon Reid was an absolute monster on the guitar. This band and their work are both criminally underrated.
💯💯
this amazing band is not in the rock and roll hall of fame!!!!!!!!!!!!,,,,what a sad joke!!!!!!!!!
Monsters at every position.... all masters of their craft.
Not bound by any genre which probably contributed to them being so grossly underappreciated. You just couldn't pigeonhole them. Name another band with songs so vastly different... Solace of You, Austlander, Nothingness, Ugly Head, Times Up, Cult of Personality.... epic range.
I think this might be my favorite of theirs, it's so silly but the musicianship and lyrics are still amazing!!! They were SO underrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
👋🏾👨🏾
I agree with your assessment.
@@jamelakajamal Have you listened to Ice T and Body Count?

Ha! I never noticed that!!!
lmao, I should smack myself in the face for never noticing that.
It's ok, I'm just ANTHRAX obsessed. lol
That is so freaking cool!
This song rings true for many Instagram and Tiktok influencers.
Gotta hand it to people with nothing to offer that found a job with nothing to offer.
They call em Bobby Lyre's these days
i know I am quite off topic but does anybody know a good website to stream newly released movies online?
@Anderson Baylor Try flixzone. Just search on google for it :)
@Anderson Baylor I watch on flixzone. You can find it by googling =)
My favourite band of the late 80's early 90 's.. Love them.
Same...
favorite living color song! "The solace of you". Is a great number of theirs if you get a chance.
I still remember them performing this on Arsenio Hall’s old talk show & at the very end if it, Corey Glover turned toward the desk & playfully said “The truth hurts, doesn’t it, Arsenio?” Haha.

Living Color Rocked as hard as anyone...great lyrics
Love Living Colour, been listening them since Time's Up release.
I pretty much love everything Living Colour has done.
This is my favorite Living Colour song, and the video is awesome too. And yes, it's about shallow materialistic people who try to make it seem like they're living the life. Vernon Reid, the guitar player, is crazy talented.

One of the first singles I ever bought, back in 1988, such great groove. Now, this is entertainment!
I love this song. A deep gem of the 80s.
Try "Funny Vibe" by these guys. Very strong message.
fubar1217 Funny Vibes is so important, just like Which Way to America.

i got to see these guys twice back in the day. Just as tight live as on the cd. Completely mind blowing shows
The first time I can EVER recall hearing the expression "I'm Fierce!" is IN this song! -EVER!
another great song of theirs you should check out is "Fight the Fight". listened to it recently again and cant get it out of my head.
Funk, rock and Jamal... What a combo!

Yes, a Glamour Boy is a poser, or wannabe. T.L.C. would've called them a "Scrub" or a "Busta".
Used to cover this song in my band back in the 80s. Fun tune, great band.
These dudes were the shit back in the late 80's. "Cult of Personality" f*kn rocked! That got me hooked.

Remember this was at the end of the 80's, the decade of excess and promotion of the same. All the dudes in my hood were straight to the nines with the hottest fashion and none of them had any money. That's just how it was.
You can't get too much more 80s than this. I remember it being all over MTV. Those Ken dolls are the freakiest Ken dolls! Lol!

"Which way to your America" next. You're welcome!!!
Middle Man is one that is based on a poem Corey Glover wrote as a teenager, really another great song.
King's X - Black the Sky. Dug Pinnick is a killer vocalist who also happens to be African American. I think they have a video for Dogman.
dUg is amazing!
"Black the Sky" is fantastic...and so is "Dogman".
Start out with "Over my Head"
Catchy,
Crunchy,
Beatle-esque harmonies
Also, Jamal, of you're digging Living Colour, you should definitely check out their cover of Talking Heads "Memories Can't Wait". Please, you won't regret it!!
How did I miss this reaction when it came out??? Luv this video!! Awesome reaction, Jamel!!
This song gets stuck in my head and drives my wife nuts.. lol. Love it.
Glamour Boys.... Living Colour anticipated Instagram's shit... they were s fuckin'ahead of their own times!
One of the ancient meanings for glamour is a beautiful façade cast over ugliness by magic.
Living colour was way ahead of their time. Listen to what they were singing about back in the 90s. Cult of personality especially
another great job with songs from my youth..
I hear a distinct reggae influence in this song, especially in the bridge. Maybe it's the bass line, maybe it's the energy; I'm not sure. Anyone else hear it?
Welcome to the world ;) Living Colour is the best. Used to watch them on MTV when I was a youngin 😜
Living Colour-Funny Vibe

perfect pop song, I love their first album!!
I remember on a VHS tape I had of Junior Seau he had this song on it and he referred to the WR's as "The Glamour Boys"
Omg, I remember this Mtv video Hahaha
The album called stained was a gem

Love that you referenced "Winona's Big Brown Beaver" by Primus! You seem like the funnest dude to hang out with. 😀
Corey glover has an amazing voice
Loved this song when I was very young!
Jamal...time to bring in MIDDLE MAN from Living Colour📣👍

Most underestimated and most misunderstood band. Vernon Is a genius. Fucking love these guys. Thank you, J
Another great song from an absolutely amazing album, their debut.
So glad I saw them live in 89. They were amazing. Next you should do Open Letter to a Landlord. I don't know if you noticed but this song is not only funky and heavy as hell, but also has a strong tropical music vibe to it. It is so amazing
That suit was glamorous however😉 I did have some crazy clothes in the 80's too....must admit.
Fun stuff. Love all their music.
Living Colour > Primus.

Lyrics:
The glamour boys swear they are a diva
The glamour boys have it all under control
Always dancing and always laughing
The glamour boys are playing the role
The glamour boys never have no money
The glamour boys wear the most expensive clothes
The glamour boys are always at the party
Where the money comes from heaven only knows
I ain't no glamour boy - I'm fierce
I ain't no glamour boy - ooh
I ain't no glamour boy - I'm fierce
I ain't no glamour boy
The glamour boys live off their ambition
The glamour boys have it all figured out
A very, very dubious position
When you got no clout
The glamour boys' whole life is a gamble
They might get over or fall flat on their face
But if one does, there's no need to worry
Another G-Boy will take his place
I ain't no glamour boy - I'm fierce
I ain't no glamour boy - ooh
I ain't no glamour boy - I'm fierce
I ain't no glamour boy
The glamour boys don't think about tomorrow
The glamour boys just need tonight to play
But just like things you can't afford on credit
Time catches up and you have to pay
The glamour boys are always on the guest list
You'll always find them in the hottest spots in town
They'll be your friend if you have fame or fortune
If you don't they won't be hanging 'round.
I ain't no glamour boy - I'm fierce
I ain't no glamour boy - ooh
I ain't no glamour boy - I'm fierce
I ain't no glamour boy
I ain't no glamour boy - I'm fierce
I ain't no glamour boy - ooh
I ain't no glamour boy - I'm fierce
I ain't no glamour boy - no no!
(What do you mean my credit's no good?)
Living Color should have been a HELL of a lot bigger than they were. They called people out on their bullshit and stood behind it.
