Vernon Reid (guitarist) agreed to join me for a talk I gave in Brooklyn last year. He's been one of my music heroes since I was 19 years old. It was such an honor.
Will Calhoun, the drummer, is a real virtuoso and highly respected in the percussion world. When you look at his influences and the people he's played with, you realise how incredibly versatile he is.
Me too! Oddly I had forgotten about it until I saw it mentioned here. HOW on earth did I forget this wonderful song?? Incredible sound, lyrics, message - just fantastic.
@@brettschacht4183Stain is my favorite album of theirs, and it's honestly a tough call because I love all their records. Biscuits is also highly overlooked. Money Talks is easily a top 5 song out of their catalog for me.
Their second album Time's Up is a banger!! New Jack Theme, Elvis is Dead ( with sax) , Undercover of the Darkness (with Queen Latifa), Fight the Fight. Under rated in a big way!
This. I've been on Twitter trying to convince Vernon Reid (@vurnt22) to re-release the title track to radio. It's MORE relevant today than when it was written.
I saw that show in Indianapolis. 2 nights. Corey fell off the stage while swinging his hair on the first night. Luckily, he was fine & I saw the 2nd night show.
Living colour is a great band. They have a 5+ album catalog. Definitely lots of good material there. Open Letter to a Landlord, Type, Solace of You, Whats your favorite colour?, funny vibe, glamours boys, auslander, ...tons more... killer mix of rock, metal, reggae, alternative, soul, and funk....
Exactly. I remember seeing them at a New Music Seminar in NY just before this album was about to be released. Then, Living Colour visited my university at played a show at our main campus ballroom. Great guys and great band. They were ahead of their time and got drowned by Grunge. I worked at a music store when this was released. It was a huge seller.
@@seanswinton6242 Hmmm, IDK about being drowned out by grunge. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Colour_discography I had to go back to their album dates for a minute. '88 with Vivid was a breakthrough with all kinds of sounds. 2 years later they put together a no less diversified but more socially conscious Time's Up. Times Up just didn't have that mega hit like Cult was. 93's Stain, for anyone that wasn't a true fan via the fist two albums, was a very experimental album with little pop appeal. It was so "against type" of the first two that along with the change to grunge/alternative going on at that time, it couldn't make a lot of headway. Hell, it took them 10 years to put out Collideoscope (2003). By then, you had to dig to find out if they had a new album out. The Chair in the Doorway in '09 was pretty good. Shade from 2017 is pretty solid as well.
@@purplebeard1526Stain is definitely highly underrated in my book, and it's also my favorite album of theirs although Time's Up and the biscuits EP are right behind it. I dig all their records, though.
I think this may be my favorite track from this band...such a vibe...such amazing singing...AND some scatting thrown in...and do not even get me started on the guitar work LOL...how can you not love this one?! 💯😁
Glad you checked this one out, this is my favourite song by Living Colour! I heard this one a lot when I was a kid, and something about it always appealed to me. Listening now, I appreciate the lead singer's vocals paired with the interesting and impactful drums, the perfectly timed bass notes and the matching rhythm guitar, not to mention the sprinklings of guitar solos here and there. I really love the uniqueness of it.
Seen them last November playing with Extreme, and Cory’s vocals were still on point! Dream come true seeing Vernon and Nuno playing guitar on the same stage 👏
That was so fun watching you guys go to the moon on that!! 😅 Yea...Living Colour. I saw them shortly after they blew up with Cult of P, and one unrelated thing I'll just always remember: it was the 1st show I ever saw people crowd surf. I was like what the heck are these people doing? Lol 😊 And great show. Saw them at Lollapalooza early 90s as well. Greeeaaaatttt very talented band.
Every Living Colour song is so unique and an incredible listen. A masterful mix of Hip hop, Reggae, funk, Jazz, Progressive Rock, R&B, Hard rock, pop, blues, heavy metal, punk and soul. Each member of the band is a virtuoso of their craft. Every song on their first 4 albums is masterful - Vivid, Time's Up, Biscuits and Stain. I highly encourage you to react to more of their songs and add them to your personal spotify playlist. You will not be disappointed and they will become one of your favorite bands. Finally a return to one of the best bands to hit music in the past 35 years! I used to watch these guys live in NYC in the 80's. Messrs. Cory Glover (vocals), Vernon Reid(guitar), Muzz Skillings(bass), and Wil Calhoun on drums. Doug Winbush would later replace Muzz on bass.
This is one of my favorite bands, I met them in person, they are super cool people too. Singer is Corey Glover, guitarist: Vernon Reid! Will Calhoun - Drums, Doug Wimbish - Bass. I love em all so much!! Take this journey and you will too. Also if you like black vocalists over metal too, you'll love the band Sevendust. js
Everything starts out smooth. The funky groove is going perfectly. Then the song keeps ramping up and turning up. Will's drums, Vernon's guitar and Muzz on that bass. This might be my favorite Living Colour song.
How did I miss y'all posting this? Living Colour is one of the most underrated bands ever & definitely one of my favorites! I remember when Jay discovered them & how his flabbers were ghasted. I love Solace of You and agree they should check it out, but I don't think it's really a love ballad in the traditional sense. I hear it more as being about taking comfort in oneself. "A wise man said to know thyself, cause in the end there's no one else."

A guy I played in a band with a few years ago (himself a very good songwriter and guitarist) said that Living Colour is one of his favourite bands. Listening to this for the first time I now see why he said that.
The singer is the great Corey Glover. He was also in a movie called Platoon, you should check that out too. Another rocking Living Cloud song is "Open Letter to a Landlord."
People who were there at the time knew... Living Colour were *the* band. They did it all, and they did it all *so* damn well. The album this is from. "Time's Up", is chock full of killer tracks from across to musical spectrum.
Corey Glover was great in Platoon as Francis. He doesn’t die but self inflicts a stab wound in his leg at the end of their last battle and he and Charlie Sheen fly off together knowing they’re out of the war since they were both wounded twice. As good as an actor he is a superior front man and singer. Why they never exploded in popularity as a group I’ll never understand. The band and the singer are incredible. There are more songs to check out. Keep up the great work. You may not realize the impact you have on your fans. It’s a daily listen for me. If you haven’t reviewed Platoon you should. Great War movie.
I just saw them headline at Sweetwater Sound in Fort Wayne, IN and they have grown from amazing to GOD-TIER! Everyone of them (different bassist, but the other 3 are the same) are at the peak of their careers. And, fun fact, their current bass player, Doug Wimbish played in the Sugarhill Rhythm Section (Sugarhill gang, Grandmaster Flash) and was on many early hip hop tracks like The Message, White Lines and Apache. Again, GOD-TIER musicians. If you get a chance to see them live, it will change your life.
Hey J and Amber!! You bring such light and joy into the day for me and for all who watch your sweet reactions! So, listen to, "Glamor Boys" picturing yourselves on a tropical beach, living out a wonderful, sunny, cloudless, blue sky day. You both have an amazing tropical drink in hand, under a cabana, with the warm ocean breeze all around, palm trees swaying. Glamor Boys, with the steel drums, marimbas and guitars put me in that state of mind everytime! God Bless You both!!
Corey Glover is one of my favorite male singers because of the amount of personality he always pushes out there through his voice, and for the lyrics in this song, the man knew just what to do. I also really love the bass in this song, Muzz Skillings is my hero and my reason for picking up a bass guitar to learn. This song is pretty tame for him, the song "Time's Up" is where he and the guitarist (Vernon Reid) become absolute monsters. William Calhoun (drums) is a beast too. Great example of him slamming it down nice and loud would be the song "Type". "Time's Up" is basically the title track for the 1990 album under the same name. Their finest work and the absolute pinnacle of music in my opinion. Another awesome song to check that plays around with a blend of genres in one go is "Elvis is Dead". I've never danced and headbanged so hard to a slng before 😅
PPS-LC didn't add a press photo when they were trying to get a record deal. Back then, they were getting rejected because of old, racist pieces of shit in the record industry at the time. They call him the Black Eddie Van Halen)** Enjoy... SGT Rock
I saw them live in the late 80s and really enjoyed their music. They didn't have an aggressive album release schedule compared to many bands, and fell apart in the mid-90s while trying (and failing) to record their 4th album. I didn't realize that the band reformed and has been producing new material for two decades, but the material has failed to chart and music tastes have changed. But after reviewing some just a few minutes ago... I've got to deep dive the albums I've missed.
Genius track. Fun Fact : as mentioned previously, Corey (vocals) was in the movie Platoon and he was the first one to get killed, as was the way in those days!
Good Lord, this band is SO UNDERRATED it's criminal. Those first two albums- Vivid and Times Up! are some of the greatest rock albums ever created, Stain is much darker but no less rockin'- heck, all of their albums are fantastic. Vernon Reid is one of the very best guitarists who ever slung a six-string, Corey Glover's voice is perfectly matched to this band's style, Doug Wimbish is a devastatingly awesome bassist, and both Muzz Skillings and Will Calhoun provide a tremendous percussion beat. Can you tell I'm a fan? Please, more Living Colour, and DON'T MAKE IT SO LONG BETWEEN reactions!😀
Please react to Solace Of You, Glamour Boys, Times Up, Open Letter To A Landlord, Type, Nothingness and Elvis Is Dead. There is a great version of Love Rears live at the Apollo.
Open Letter( to a Landlord) is and absolute MUST for you two. Fun fact: Singer, Corey Glover was 1st seen in 1986's Platoon, an Best Picture Oscar winning Vietnam film directed by Oliver Stone, a Vietnam Veteran. Highly recommend. Early Charlie Sheen.
Guys!! So glad you finally got back to LC. I saw them live here in Adelaide, Australia late last year and 40 years later they're still unbelievable. Go see them if they're near you. Please check out "Open Letter To A Landlord", "Middle Man", "Type", "Pride" and "Desperate People ".There's so many to listen to, honestly.
“Elvis is Dead” from the same album would be a great reaction video FYI. And the drummer is the mighty Wil Calhoun. One of the finest over the past 30-35 years. Formally trained and can rip it up playing Jazz too. Good catch Amber. He is worth the acknowledgment.
I'm almost 50 years old, so I've heard A LOT of music! 😁 But this song still ranks among my top 10 songs of all time! And speaking of bands you forgot... - pleeeeaaase do more The Cult! You can start with Love Removal Machine, Edie and Little Devil. 😉🤟
MY SUGGESTION!! 😄 When I first played this for a buddy of mine back when it came out, he stopped the tape near the end of the string intro and said, "I know you're not going soft on me." 😅 After all the funk and soul he had heard me play, and a smattering of jazz, he did NOT expect to jear something like that. But he loved it, and so do I. I knew you guus would love this. Corey Glover, the lead singer, was originally an actor who found himself in some entertainment industry waiting room with Vernon Reid, the guitarist. They got to talking and pretty soon they put together a band. Jay mentioned similarities to Lenny Kravitz -- believe it or not, Lenny started out as a rapper, under the name Romeo Blue.
“Open letter (to a landlord” is soulful listen to that one!

Elvis is Dead is a fun song too.
“Solace of You” is my favorite of theirs
I just saw them headline at Sweetwater Sound in Fort Wayne, IN and they have grown from amazing to GOD-TIER! Everyone of them (different bassist, but the other 3 are the same) are at the peak of their careers. And, fun fact, their current bass player, Doug Wimbish played in the Sugarhill Rhythm Section (Sugarhill gang, Grandmaster Flash) and was on many early hip hop tracks like The Message, White Lines and Apache. Again, GOD-TIER musicians. If you get a chance to see them live, it will change your life.
This is the dopest song. Layers to it, genre bending, etc. Had the cassette single. Nobody had any idea why is was dope AF!
When they eventually signed their contract, urban legend has it that the head of Epic records literally shit himself when 4 black musicians showed up to record Livid.

Great reaction guys, loved it. This is one of those timeless songs that still sounds current.
Drummer Will Calhoun is also a fantastic jazz drummer. First class musician.
Lead singer Corey was in the movie Platoon with Charlie Sheen, William Defou the Forest Whitaker
I love this band. This is a great song!
Such a cool band, I remember seeing them in the late 80`s when they opened for the Rolling Stone`s in Tampa, Florida.
Open letter (to a landlord) or Nothingness (Jay will get his bass) also great songs
Genius track. Fun Fact : as mentioned previously, Corey (vocals) was in the movie Platoon and he was the first one to get killed, as was the way in those days!
One of my all time favorite bands. They have a ton of good music to listen to, and I love that Corey's rocking a Mario jersey!🐧
In Living Color, Did you all know that Mick Jagger, saw them Playing in a Club, then Produced their first several albums??
Jay and Amber this is different from Cult Of Personality but I like it. Checkout their song Glamour Boy. A fun song.
The singer not only is a Broadway musical singer but he's also an accomplished actor. If you have watched Platoon, you've seen him in action.
This is amazing funk-blues! and yes, his voice is smooth...
Also Behind the Sun off their album: The chair in the doorway has such a great feel to it.
I always loved their song Solace of You!
🇬🇧 Sheesh, what a voice! 👌 👍🎼❤
One of my very favourite LC tunes. Thank You.
Early Charlie Sheen.
ugh so many artists/bands to get back to and also so many you haven't even touched on yet, keep them coming 😊
Everyone in this band mastered their instrument
one of the single best songs ever made.... and yes fark they can rock
Their song "Type" is a BANGER !!!
Oh my God I forgot all about this song thanks for reminding me!
AMAZING never heard this before - thank you!
My favorite song of theirs. I was pleasantly surprised to see a reaction to it.
