I think maybe the TV show confused people, but I remember listening to them on KROQ and KLOS in L.A. back in the mid to late '80s. They crossed over pretty well Metal with New Wave.
It was all these things in their time (~1989), in this time (2020), in the '60s which it directly references, and possibly throughout all human history. That's one of the things that makes this song so great.
Amazingly (and sadly) still as relevant today as it was 30+ years ago. Still a kick-ass song though which has barely dated sound-wise. Always thought these guys should have been bigger than they were.
Living Colour is an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1984. The band currently consists of guitarist Vernon Reid, lead vocalist Corey Glover, drummer Will Calhoun and bassist Doug Wimbish (who replaced Muzz Skillings in 1992). Stylistically, their music is a creative fusion influenced by heavy metal, funk, jazz, hip hop, punk, and alternative rock. The band's lyrics range from the personal to the political, including social commentary on racism in the United States. Living Colour has released six studio albums so far. The band rose to fame with their debut album Vivid in 1988. Although they scored a number of hits, Living Colour is best known for their signature anthem "Cult of Personality", which won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1990. They were also named Best New Artist at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards and won their second Grammy Award for their follow-up album Time's Up (1990). Their third album, Stain (1993), was also well received by music critics. After disbanding in 1995, Living Colour reunited in late 2000, and has released three more studio albums since then: Collideøscope (2003), The Chair in the Doorway (2009) and Shade (2017). The band has been in the process of working on new material for the follow-up to Shade.
This is one of those songs that blew us rockers away. We did not care what color they were. We just wanted the album. Great is great no matter what the color of the skin is.
Seriously, man. I was so lucky to see them at The Boathouse in Norfolk, VA after Vivid released....and they freaking SHREDDED. Everyone left that show tired, with a smile.

Amen to that! I saw them on their Vivid 25th Anny tour at a small club and I dare say they sounded just as good or even better than the late 80s. Absolutely incredible band
These guys never got the media exposure they deserved, but they are still doing it. They had the best Chris Cornell tribute when he passed away. Master musicians.

This may be my best reaction EVER. Your expressions were PRICELESS! I literally laughed out loud. Just goes to show great rock can be produced by any race (Chambers Bros, Living Color) , gender (Heart) nationality or age. Welcome to the family!

@Coach Craig cannot agree. Their songs didn't get lots of airplay because they changed the sound of their albums and radio stations didn't know what to do, but that doesn't mean they didn't write a lot of great songs.
One of my favorite heavy rock bands of all time… my Son’s band & I (I played bass & booked him) opened for Corey Glover on two of his solo tour stops in Texas… he’s an outstanding human… he talked to my Son one on one about how impressed he was with his voice, songwriting & stage presence… Love Corey…❤️
I’m a 45 year old white woman living on a homestead in Oklahoma with my husband of 26years and in the early 90’s in HS this song was played on everyone’s radio. This song is still on my playlist after all these years. I’m so glad you finally heard this!! Get the lyrics and read them over and over. Brilliant and moving song!!! Great reaction!!
Personally, I think Vernon Reid is easily one of the 5 best guitarists on the planet. Even if thats a contentious idea, his body of work cannot be denied. He played on Public Enemy's 'Yo, Bum Rush the Show' and, I believe, 'It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back'. Additionally he does solo work and work with his own instrumental group Masque, as well as techno crossovers with DJ Logic (see: Yohimbe Brothers). And probably some stuff Ive forgotten. Funny you mention primus. My dream ensemble is: Mike Patton (vocals/faith no more) Vernon Reid Les Claypool (bass/Primus) Tomas Haake (percussion/meshuggah) Keep killin it, Jamel. Also. Request reiteration: "And Plague flowers the Kaleidoscope" by Ne Obliviscaris. 6 man prog metal band from australia with a classically trained violinist lead. Edit: afterthought: Al Sharpton once said that "Rap is the CNN of the Black community, and no one has broadcast louder than Public Enemy." Living Colour is the metal version of that ethos.
Nice assemble. Mine would be: Vocals: David Draiman (Disturbed) Bass: Flea (RHCP) Guitars: Toru "TK" Kimejima (Ling tosite sigure) and Carlos Santana Drums: Jay Weinberg
Vernon Reid was easily one of the most original and unique guitarists of the '80s and early 90s. His frantic, thrash, out-of-and-then-back-into key melodic style of soloing was just not like anyone else. And as cool as the album Vivid was(from which "Cult of Personality" was their one and only hit), the follow-up album "Time's Up" was MUCH better in every way. Musically, lyrically, in quality of the engineering, it was a quantum leap forward---and hardly anyone has ever heard of it. A damn shame if you ask me. This band NEVER got the recognition they deserved.

"I exploit you, still you love me" has got to be one of the saddest yet most truthful statements of human civilization. Love this song when it came out in 1988 and love it even more today in the modern world of social media. Jamel's reaction = Priceless!!!
Saw them in concert back in the 80's..... Almost everyone in the crowd was white but it didn't matter..... We were there to rock with these brothers and man can they rock!!! Awesome show!
I saw Living Color live in 89' when they opened for The Rolling Stones in Tampa Bay Stadium. Incredible live band! Mick Jagger knew exactly what he was doing when he insisted they were their opening act! #Mindblown!!
Thomas Preston I saw these guys on the same tour in Ames, Iowa. I then went and saw these guys a year and a half later when they toured on their own. They are AMAZING!
I love this song so much. I listen to it almost every day. This song was the first song that made me really listen to lyrics and, even at an early age, it moved something inside of me for the first time. And the bike shorts are a core memory
Timeless. “I tell you one and one makes THREE”- still completely relevant. And whoever came up with that riff is a genius. It’s one of the most recognizable openings, and one that I’d put up there with Hendrix, Zeppelin, Metallica you name it
I met Muzz Skillings in '91 at Lollapalooza 1. Very underrated bassist and genuinely nice guy (they all were). Wish I still had my autographed ticket from that show.
The entire band is extremely talented! The singer! The drummer! The bassist! Mr. Vernon Reid DESTROYING that guitar!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 The little girl throughout the video IS KEY! You see her watching TV, as the band plays the song, she becomes mesmerized, completely engrossed. Just as the song comes to a close, she leans forward to shut off the TV. This song is an indictment of the industrial complex that is the mainstream media.....ALL platforms of media. It is the 'Cult of Personality' that you can not take at face value. This song is around 30 years old... Relevant then...even more so now. ✌️✌️
You're already a "rock star" Jamal, for bringing this generation of music to younger people! Keep up the great job on spreading your love of music to the people out there!
Sorry, but people will always be divided. You can’t rock on together when people aren’t “diversified” in music. Especially, when I group listens to nothing but rap & hip hop & knows nothing about other groups & songs from other eras.
This is a lyrical masterpiece. The riff, guitar work, drums, this is also masterful instrumentals. When future civilizations dig us up 5000 years from now I hope they find this song and see we get it. We just couldn't stop it.

@@carlospacheco5994 No he isn't. I followed this band in early to mid 1980's when the begun, playing in NYC. Vern Reid was known as a top guitarist...which he is. Another thing, was it was unheard of of an all black band playing rock and roll and hard rock. These guys played at the Ritz in NYC and I must've saw them 30 times...because a close friend of mine was their manager. I then went off to medical school and haven't heard much about the bands progression in music.
"Where the hell I've been?" is the perfect response for those that hear this song for the first time. Not only was this song part of my childhood, but then CM Punk used it as his entrance music in WWE & UFC. This song is a classic & is still relevant no matter how old it is.
if memory serves it was his music in Ring of Honor before he ever signed with WWE. its why he had 2 other themes before he eventually reached out, personally, i believe to ask Living Colour, to be able to use it (i might be wrong about who reached out tbh)
It’s not where HE has been, it’s WHY haven’t black hardcore and hard rock bands more well known? Glad you enjoyed it. Rock should only have one colour: blood red for all heart!
These guys are incredible! This song is on my playlist of music for when I need energy to get work done; it's an adrenaline rush. So glad you enjoy it too. But it's not so much a "head bobbin'" song as it is a "head bangin'" song - MTV Headbanger's Ball 1989!
Somebody should buy the rights to Headbanger's Ball and broadcast it like in the day. We know MTV doesn't play music anymore but that show was priceless and IT'S TIME !!!
My wife saw these guys open for Scorpions and Kiss in '89. She said the crowd (Tulsa 8,000 all white), started out dead to them, but by the end of their set, they got the biggest reaction compared to Kiss and the Scorps.
I'm not sure that what you say is true. They were highly regarded as an innovative rock'n'roll band, and equally as being virtuosic musicians, Reid especially. Their later albums became more patchy in regards to songwriting, but Living Colour enjoys an enduring legacy for their flash of brilliance. It's far more of a shame that the politically activist mainstream media ignores the amazing legacy of virtuoso and innovative black musicians in deference for a divisive political agenda.
African-Americans INVENTED rock n' roll. It's their thing, and it was taken away from them because America is a racist shithole country. There was never a time when African-Americans couldn't rock.
Paul T Sjordal Agree with your comment African Americans invented soul aka rock and I have always been a fan of Motown, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, but no one took rock and roll away from anyone. I hate rap, hope black Americans get back to their roots and start singing and playing again! This song is amazing and created by true music artists!
it's any leader.. politician. it means as soon as they take a stance on literally anything, they are bought and sold, not to be trusted. he uses examples of leaders in the song when this is not true. exceptions to the rule. u aren't a mere leader when history remembers your name. for doing non leader things alongside being a politician. for better or worse. some for greater reasons; kennedy, ghandi. others for less; mousollini, stalin.
I've always felt it was a double entendre. A leader who speaks the truth, the leader will die, but not necessarily physically, because once they have their foot in the door to power, they're immediately compromised, because power corrupts... *most everyone* Those beyond corruption are removed physically.
That song is so well thought out. From the deep lyrics to Vernon's chaotic solo that symbolizes the turmoil in cults. I was a freshman in high school when this came out and I immediately bought the album at the mall.
I met Corey Glover when this song came out. He had massive charisma and was as nice as can be. There are people you meet that have "IT", he definitely had it.
the more relative part is "I exploit you, still you love me. I tell you 1 and 1 makes 3" . yes, we're living through this right now. a cult of personality in our midst.
We have been for a few decades where have you been lol, anybody who thinks it just got this bad in 4 years is living in ignorance. Obama exploited us plenty of times, just like Bush, and just like Clinton you apparently fully bought into there cults if you didn't realize it so congratulations.
The way they promoted Living Colour when they hit the scene is part of their downfall. The record companies and media (looking at you Rolling Stone) seemed to think it was more important to promote that they were black instead of great rockers. They are a rock band, promote them like a rock band dammit, and let their music and lyrics speak for them.
Agreed. Playing up the race instead of the tent is always a bad idea. Like "white" rappers as a novelty.... Are they good or not? That's what I care about. I love watching talented people do their thing, even if I don't care for a genre I can appreciate the talent.
Wrong. It was Vernon Reid's paranoia about race and antagonizing everyone about it, that did the band in. He segregated himself from white artists and white-dominated artist scenes. He even pitched a fit and stopped endorsing the same guitars George Lynch played because his band was called 'Lynch Mob.' It's his FUCKING NAME! It's a shame and a shock, but its NO ONE else's fault. The band did this to themselves.
As a former Musician, I just have to say MAN! Years back, when this came out, I dug it immeadiately. These guys get with it, and the lead vocal is is powerfull. It's one of those songs I don't get tired of.
Chuck Berry and Little Richards also inspired a lot of young boys to pick up the guitar or play the piano and rock n roll. But the current generations seems to have forgotten their contribution to the rock n roll genre. Which is sad.
This song was kick ass in the 80s and it's still kick ass today. These guys were severely underrated.

This is why I, as a white man, don't try to speak up for black people. Like nah, I'll let them speak for themselves

Man, this song was light years ahead of its time. This was a history lesson, a warning, and an awesome band throwing it all out on the table.
It was all these things in their time (~1989), in this time (2020), in the '60s which it directly references, and possibly throughout all human history. That's one of the things that makes this song so great.
Well said, both of you. This music is just ... bad ass, pure and simple.

That's the truth. Music does not know colour, it just knows sound. Kind of like the soul.
I am a white boy from Boston, Massachusetts. Living Colour taught me that a person can never judge a book by it’s cover. I heard Living Colour for the first time on late night tv. the accuracy of this song is staggering in todays light
My dream ensemble is:
Mike Patton (vocals/faith no more)
Vernon Reid
Les Claypool (bass/Primus)
Tomas Haake (percussion/meshuggah)
Keep killin it, Jamel.
Also. Request reiteration: "And Plague flowers the Kaleidoscope" by Ne Obliviscaris. 6 man prog metal band from australia with a classically trained violinist lead.
Edit: afterthought:
Al Sharpton once said that "Rap is the CNN of the Black community, and no one has broadcast louder than Public Enemy." Living Colour is the metal version of that ethos.
Nice assemble. Mine would be:
Vocals: David Draiman (Disturbed)
Bass: Flea (RHCP)
Guitars: Toru "TK" Kimejima (Ling tosite sigure) and Carlos Santana
Drums: Jay Weinberg
Vernon Reid was easily one of the most original and unique guitarists of the '80s and early 90s. His frantic, thrash, out-of-and-then-back-into key melodic style of soloing was just not like anyone else. And as cool as the album Vivid was(from which "Cult of Personality" was their one and only hit), the follow-up album "Time's Up" was MUCH better in every way. Musically, lyrically, in quality of the engineering, it was a quantum leap forward---and hardly anyone has ever heard of it. A damn shame if you ask me. This band NEVER got the recognition they deserved.

I'm not sure that what you say is true. They were highly regarded as an innovative rock'n'roll band, and equally as being virtuosic musicians, Reid especially. Their later albums became more patchy in regards to songwriting, but Living Colour enjoys an enduring legacy for their flash of brilliance.

it's any leader.. politician. it means as soon as they take a stance on literally anything, they are bought and sold, not to be trusted. he uses examples of leaders in the song when this is not true. exceptions to the rule. u aren't a mere leader when history remembers your name. for doing non leader things alongside being a politician. for better or worse. some for greater reasons; kennedy, ghandi. others for less; mousollini, stalin.
I've always felt it was a double entendre. A leader who speaks the truth, the leader will die, but not necessarily physically, because once they have their foot in the door to power, they're immediately compromised, because power corrupts... *most everyone*
Those beyond corruption are removed physically.

The way they promoted Living Colour when they hit the scene is part of their downfall. The record companies and media (looking at you Rolling Stone) seemed to think it was more important to promote that they were black instead of great rockers.
