I love the way Eren is not a protagonist until the final episodes of the second season. He's just another character fighting enormous monsters which Isayama uses to tell us how hard and cruel the world is. That is some good Worldbuilding and storytelling technique!
The fact that Eren can see his future is the very reason that Mikasa was able to kill him, the same reason he goaded them into fighting and otherwise contracdict itself if Eren intended to go all the way. He essentially saved Humanity's future but he was doing the "dirty work" no-one else was willing to do, doing the cleanup to pave the way for a new beginning, a restart for humanity and their previous mistakes, hence why he had his chosen few, whom he cared for, and also due to who they were as people, righteous and good, with bright ambitions and ideals that would create a better future. So I'm not arguing he did the right thing, no, I'm arguing the reasoning for his actions. Even though we ourselves (in this reality) all know it would be the only option were we to continue on the current path. All due to Humanity's own lack of self control.
