ReZisT Lust I could tell you about the collapse.. the fall of Bungie.. the epic battle of ripping gameplay for the DLC to make the most profit... but that was long ago, blah blah children are frightened anyways
Bear in mind - this is when the game was first released - it's been over a year now and the game's had a few DLCs - after The Taken King, the game became good
My husband plays a lot of video games, and I like to watch him play in the background, but I hate games with weak stories and repetitive combat. Destiny came with his PS4, but I literally hated when he played it. Isn't escapism a huge part of video games? How can you escape to a half-baked world with no believable characters to latch onto?
for the most part, yes, unless it has actually innovative and changing gameplay like many nintendo games, or even elder scrolls (i know there is a story to all of them but i think i only beat a main story in those once)
Being able to escape to an interesting and well realized world is nice, yes. However, gameplay matters a lot too. Destiny has fantastically polished core mechanics. That alone can keep someone playing, especially with the lack of high mobility shooters on the market. Hope that helps.
LunamrathP but it doesn't help when more than half the game revolves around horde mode and collecting.sure, the mechanics are solid, but one of the important parts of video games is enemy variety and mission variety, which lets be honest, the game falls on its face on.
The saddest part, in my view, is that Destiny has wonderful Lore. I mean the Lore behind the Hive, their Sword Logic, etc. is amazing. Alas, never is it in game.
I originally thought Destiny would be a futuristic version of Dark souls meets Elder scrolls. A action adventure title with Rpg elements. You could have fun with your mates and engage in pvp. I was wrong. *Sad sigh*
The Armoured Alchemist Interesting, you're not alone with that disappointment. I assumed Destiny was going to make it like world of warcraft level of openness, the exploration of skyrim and the combat system of halo.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head with everything you said, Alex! Destiny was pretty much a deformed hybrid that didn't cater to any particular niche, and instead slightly catered to several niches. I really did enjoy this gaming related video. HOPE YOU MAKE MORE VIDEOS ABOUT GAMES THAT YOU HATE!!!
Jesus, this game's production puts Power Rangers Megaforce to shame and then shits on it. So reportedly, head writer Joseph Slaten had the game's story done by 2012 and handed what I've done to understand is the video game equivalent of a pitch pilot to Bungie's suits. However, it was rejected for being linear and cringey so it was rewritten in about seven months. Executives and producers pretty much sat on Slaten's shoulder and watched him churn out the weird, unexplained, tedious and frankly insulting bullshit seen here. This executive bullshit and confusing production is why he ends up leaving the company and then the mass exodus that followed. This is Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric levels of rushed.
“I don’t have time to explain why I don’t have time to explain.” If you don’t have time to explain either of those then how do you have time to explain why you didn’t have time to explain that you didn’t have time to explain?
Coming back to this video is truly amazing. It has taken nearly 10 YEARS to get complete answers to a lot of these questions, many of which are lackluster. There are still so many questions left still as well. Final Shape is really gonna need to deliver. But hey, at least we got Elsie Bray's cake. Praise Bungie 😂
I'm back here as well a few days after Joe released his update video on Twitter. Let's be real that was definitely a lie about it not being "reactive" to the state if the game article. FOMO no longer keeps me around but I do check out what each season has then take a break. I am looking forward to TFS and what the seasons for that year have to offer for the story though.
Final chapter is going to be equally as disappointing as every expansion thus far. Its like the walking dead, they've stripped the franchise completemy and butt fucked it for so many years, theres no way in hell they will magically redeem themselves with an expansion that comes out 8-9 years later. The best ending for destiny would be if the fans just jumped ship and didn't buy into this manipulative nonsense for the final chapter. Let them feel the heat below their feet as they see that the fans finally had enough of their low effort half assed cash grab manipulation of the last decade!
I love going through this saga. It really shows Alex's evolution and it's quite interesting that a whole series has just failed like this, perfect content Edit: Destiny failed, not the videos
Destiny definitely didn't fail at all, it had a very rocky Start but that started still was one of the biggest games during its life. And now today its in the top most played MMOs.
I understand how people like the graphics of this game. I understand how people like the concept of this game (done right, it could have been super cool). But I don't understand how people claim this game to be one of the best games (and fps) ever created. I feel nothing for the characters in this game and so many questions have to be answered outside the game.
rosestar1324 it's probably the grind for items and stuff that makes them think that. Honestly I'm a big RPG player and I find it fun to grind with friends which is why I was drawn to this game
rosestar1324 The shooting is solid but that's more or less it. I have a feeling some of the people who say that never played Borderlands 2 or warframe (came out way later ik but I can't think of another game of this genre).
As long as we are throwing around facts, Jorge is a Spartan II, the rest of Noble team are all Spartan IIIs and Cortana is probably infected by the logic plague by the flood.
you hit so hard with all these points its honestly saddening that the echo of the game in 2013 looks and sounds infinitely more entertaining and compelling than the entirety of Destiny- DLC and all currently. it looked like it was going to blow the doors off with how immersive and innovative it could've been. it really disappoints me that developer and infrastructure collapse with the company ruined what looked to be the most amazing game in years. every minute i played from start, to "story" finish felt completely hollow like it was missing its soul, there was no excitement or driving force behind it, it felt like i was doing all the work from the first interaction with The Speaker to the final moment killing the 3 carbon copy final bosses in the black garden. i truly hope that Bungie or someone gets a second chance to breath some real life into this game in a sequel or something. because looking at those Reddit posts in this video and seeing an old 2013 cut-scene; which i didn't even know existed, reminded me of what i thought this game was going to be when i pre-ordered it, fun.
From what the studio went through of the constant meddling and fuck ups that ensued that key members left the project just tells me that there are genuine ideas that were left out for the sake of time. If Bungie was allowed to delay the game by a year or so it could have been polished much better for the glaring issues that were present. I just hope that there is at least a group of employees that have risen to the occasion to bring the content the game so desperately needs. I can feel how passionate the lead writer can be since I'm an English major currently. I can't help to think what IHE stated my thought process of what happened to the game.
I can confirm that there were sudden and abrupt changes in the development of Destiny less than a year ago. There was tension between higher ups the entire time we were developing the title due to a lack of cohesion about the vision for the game. One side wanted this huge space epic, like an MMO Mass Effect and the other side was not convinced that would sell and wanted to pare things back to more "easily accessible" standards. They were afraid too much story elements and cut scenes would drive players off. Then Joe left and everything just fell apart. By the time we were 7 months out to release, word came down that we were making massive revisions to the game's story. Huge portions of dialogue were excised and I think several recordings were redone to support the new narrative. Entire areas that would have been in the final game were removed, but some of the context wasn't, which explains weird reactions from NPCs and strange, unexplained motivations. We had a guy come in to write the grimoire cards who was given access to the original script with notations on what was cut and what needed to be revised in order to make this zombie of a game seem plausible. All of the Last City factions had their storylines and dialogue cut, the Guardian's initial introduction to the Tower and the Last City was cut, and ALL the origins were homogenized down to the one originally used for Exo characters. Most of what was cut was planned to be re-polished into DLC, but it's all there on the disc. Not all of it is live on the servers, but it's all there on the disc. Some last minute art assets needed to be remade, which is what you'll be downloading. It's an embarrassing disaster and not the game I thought would be published. -Former Bungie Employee
God If all of this is true and you are a developer, this is very interesting. This could be bullshit but it sounds like you know what you are talking about and it makes sense. Thanks God
Dolphin Guy I also think Activision just brainwashed Bungie too. Just read this quote bungie's "creative" director said: "“If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen,”
I haven't played Destiny but a bunch of the points he made such as being unable to interact with other players and brilliant art made made me think of the souls games. I wonder why it didn't work for this game?
It's funny going onto games like this where everybody is the only hero to save the world. "Alright, I'm only hero, here to save the world. Don't worry guys. I got this!" Some other players "W- wait. I am also the only hero to save the world. How are you the only hero?" "Because they said so in the cut scene. They said I'm the *only* hero to save the world. Just ME" "But everybody else..........is........also a hero.......the only hero" "I'm the better only hero here." *Max level player walks by* "Already saved the world." "Bu- WHAT? I JUST GOT HERE. THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO SAVE THE WORLD. Ho- wha- how?! WHY tell me that bullshit. Why not say, there are all these kind of heroes, instead of making all players that one hero." *random dude* "I'm half way to saving the world. What about you guys?" "Wait, what? If the high level player already saved the world, and you're half way through, and I'm about start. What the fuck. I thought I was the only hero, but I guess there are individual worlds for individual heroes to save." "Sure"
A game were all the NPCs are very sarcastic about you being "the chosen one" sounds pretty interesting. The only problems you managed to solve so far are gathering firewood and slaying sewer rats, but sure you're definitely the hero of legends
The supposed robot Batman is actually the remnants of the original Destiny story that was cut out from Destiny. I am not sure if this is exactly it, and in my free time I have dug around, but I have found out the original story of Destiny before this bit of trash came by! Originally in Destiny what happened was that the Traveler, actually would travel through Universes and manipulated the events of that universe so the Traveler would be completely praised and it fed off of that worship. It kept going from Universe to Universe, feeding itself off of these and manipulated events using the Vex and the Speaker (hence why he is masked, he is just a conduit of the Traveler and eventually a boss fight). You'd eventually be learning from Robot Batman about the Traveler being evil. The Reef later became a playable hub area in House of Wolves, but this was supposed to be your second hub at the halfway point in the story where you wouldn't be welcome in the Tower anymore. Eventually you would have made your way into the Traveler and eventually murder the round fucker. This is just what I have heard and read, could be wrong, but no one lie to me here, I think that is actually a pretty interesting story. The reason for this story being cut was because Activision was being a dick. Activision had huge restraints on their production and was looking for every chance they could to cut content from the game. These restraints made it so actually there are six copies of Destiny made. Six fucking copies!
I am not sure if Destiny was originally intended to be an MMO or not to be honest. It's not any less linear though than the normal campaign you have to admit.
+Johnnythat1 Dude Love your theory. I just fell so bad for bungie, they are a great company, they made the game I grow up with (Halo), and now they have to do what activision says..... That's a shame. Activision is a fucking money-grabbing company, all they want is money. Destiny, in my opinion, could be the best game of the decade, but activision completely ruined it.
+OpiatedBliss I got the beta when it first came out, but it was the first time I had ever heard of the game. After I was playing it for a long time, I saw that people were saying it was the worst game ever or that it was really boring. Honestly, I was confused.
This video was amazing Alex. I loved it, you really put yours, my, and so many others hard to describe thoughts perfectly explained in this well-crafted video. The graphics were perfect, the pacing was great, the writing was phenomenal and honesty the music you played in the background of some of your key points was amazing. You really have given a new perspective of Destiny and given me a new lens to look at it through. I honest to God, love this video. It was amazing, great job.
If you take the 'I could tell you...' moment with The Speaker and put it into a corporate translator, you can hear Bungie executives laughing maniacally.
I just had a thought, Bungie attempted to make a game with a plot similar to Dark Souls... But they fucked it up by not having a damn thing in the game itself.
+Anthony Maguire After watching this video i have to agree with you they went for the whole the world is larger than the player the world exsits in the players absence but that is easier said that done clearly Fromsoft is one of the few who can achieve this
Ken Chan One, Exactly. I found that what was told to me had great potential to be a riveting story... However, it wasn't told in enough detail to warrant anything more than "Hey that was kinda cool, I guess." And two, please attempt to use punctuation. I apologize for that but I feel the inherent need to make sure people at least attempt to use punctuation and grammar.
+Anthony Maguire Feels like it, but Dark Souls gives you clues to the story and in the end you have a choice: (Spoilers Ahead) light the flame, killing yourself and continue the damage done by the first sin (Gwyn lighting the flame) and keep the shaking status quo of false gods (The Lords from the Age of Fire) or take your chances with the Age of Darkness that was supposed to come had Gwyn not being a power hungry coward, in Dark Souls 2 you break that cycle and begins to usher The Age of Darkness. In the third game your character is hunting down the Lords of Cinder, people that like Gwyn, lit the fire, in a world that is getting whitered from the conflict initiated by the first sin
Jeffrey Maurer Ahem, suros is not OP,tommorrows answer is a rocket launcher, the fourth horseman has a tiny range. All shotguns are op. TLW is not that op But thorn is op as sht Vex is not that op either
Okay, let me narrow down, thorn, hawkmoon, and gallajhorn I know rocket launchers are always op, but the perk it has where rockets split up and chase targets make it op.
yes, there is another, bring dinklebot back! he sounded bored but can you blame him. north sounds like he has a cold. 1000 hours later, still has same cold, horrible
Nolan North's great, but Dinklebot was so bad that he had this ironic charm to him. His disinterested monotone actually kinda fit his robotic aesthetic, as unintentional as it may be. Even the way he delivered a few of his intentionally funny lines managed to get a chuckle out of me. Wizard from the moon will always be terrible, though. There is no saving that line. It is just bad, period.
"That wizard... came from the moon." "That. Wizard. Came from the moon!" "ThatWizardCameFromTheMoon!!!!" There's three different ways, and i bet you read them nearly the same way i said them, without ever hearing my voice. Emote.
Tommy Bowles the original planned story was amazing based on what I heard. The traveler and speaker were the original antagonists. The heart of the black garden was suppose to be located inside the traveler, and the speaker was aware but unwilling to let go of the past and the "golden age" fought to keep it in earth. Even in current lore Rasputin is programmed to bomb the shit out of the traveler if it ever tried to leave in hopes that it could be stopped in its tracks
Yeah, feels like a really bad drug trip man. So close yet so far... I believe this game might be the perfect symbol for crashed ambitions, too accessible design, basically anything that breaks most of today's gaming. God how far did it all fall?
The thing is, the problem with the story doesn't seem to be that the game is an MMO. The real problem seems to be that it's a "Chosen One" story in an MMO. I'm just going off of the footage from your reviews, but that's quite a lot, and it's very telling. Simply put, the story is built in such a way as to have the player character be the "Only one who can [do something]" when there's quite clearly a multitude of other guardians who very much can. The idea doesn't mesh with the reality of the game. If the game simply toned-down the scale from "THE CHOSEN ONE OF THE HOLY PROPHECY WHO SHALL SAVE THE LIGHT FROM THE DARKNESS" to "Person who lives in this world and works for this organization," it could actually have a half-decent story. Personal stories and arcs tend to work really well in an MMO setting, as they're built around interacting with the world and its NPCs. So what I'm saying is that Destiny either A) Tried something ambitious but stupid, B) Didn't actually give much thought to storytelling in an MMO setting, or C) Sacrificed depth and personal involvement to give the player a false sense of importance in-universe. While I'm usually optimistic and like to give benefits where there's a doubt, given the game's history and the fact that the publisher is Activision... I have a feeling the third possibility is the most likely answer.
Of course, the other alternative exists that Destiny should've just been a single-player experience with optional co-op and an online arena. That would've also worked quite a lot better.
WHY DON'T YOU HAVE MORE SUBSCRIBERS?!! You're videoes are so indepth and funny. You bring points that I've never thought of. And you're voice is so fitting for you're channel.
Because he's not mainstream enough with today's UA-cam crowd. You see, when people watch game reviews, they want to hear constant shouting, and swear words. Also they just want to hear ppl *say* that they hate/like the game. They don't care for the reasons *why* they hate/like it. But that's not just with games, that's like with any type of review ever.
Why Not Zoidberg? Ghostx2xelite I guess you're right. Immature and unfunny jokes have become the pinnacle of entertainment on youtubeXD Like G96Saber said, give him time. I can already see a bright future for this channel, that is if everyone on youtube doesn't get caught up in screaming and unfunny jokes.
Edward S.S.S ...And EXTREMELY overused memes, jokes and vines. You know the things that fall into "The Jizz in My Pants" category? Those things stopped being funny decades ago. Someone needs to step up and be original. That's one of the reasons why i like IHE.
I really hate it when people shit on destiny's story. Because all you need to do is look past what's being spoon fed to you by small animations. I felt the same way IHE does, I was annoyed with the lack of exposition. But I looked past what was, and when you do its Amazing! The detailed stories of Kabr, Dredgen Yor, I Kora Rey, Xur, the Queen Of The Reef, they all have such detailed and lengthy stories. And everyone could know them if they took the extra time to uncover them. I could write for hours about the Dark Ages, the Golden Age, the Battle Of Twilight Gap, the story behind every exotic in the game, the Vault Of Glass, when you look underneath the first layer there is so much rich stories to enjoy.
James Vincent But that's the same excuse people give FNAF. If you have to read collectibles that aren't even in the game to understand what's going on, I consider it a failure in terms of storytelling.
I Hate Everything yeah they might as well give us a book with the game... i mean shit id rather read a book than those cards... But still the story in game is garbage, i beat it at level 19 within like 2 days, and after that you dont even need to go on the maps cause all there is, is the same 4 raids that dont even take long
James Vincent You're an idiot... I bought a VIDEO GAME... aka VIDEO. I'm not going to waste hours on a fucking WEBSITE on my COMPUTER when I bought a VIDEO GAME for my XBOX ONE. Get with the program you fucking moron.
I hate to be that one guy,but I never really payed attention to this game. But I pose a question: Is Destiny a 'copy' of Borderlands 2? I haven't heard much, but from what I have, i drew these parallels. 1) A robot who is looking around, and suddenly finds the protagonist who has been dead for a long time. 2)The protagonists are set out to protect the last of a group, and eventually set everything right. 3) The rankings of how rare the weapons are + how they are color coded. 4) Looking for slightly better gear to go through tougher parts of the game. 5) Finding chests that can either give you a rare gun or one that you don't need.
Well, while the first parallel is indeed true, the others you mentioned are kinda MMO basics. They're in so many other games like WoW and Guild Wars, that it's just bread-and-butter at this point.
Destiny is NOT a copy of borderlands. I dont get why people say they're the same but since you havn't played destiny, I'll tell you a few reasons why they're different 1). the story of borerlands 2 is WAY more interesting and enjoyable than Destiny's. Simple as that 2)The side quests in Borderlands actually tell a story, even if most are fecth quest they're still entertaining. 3) Borderlands 2 has a crap ton of characters that are memorable, funny, and have back story. 4) The loot system in Destiny is way to random. At least in Borderlands theres side quests with a guaranteed rewards and bosses with high drop rates for rare gear. They may have similar concepts but they're not the same.
I wouldn't say I hated Destiny.....but for 60 bucks it is an absolute RIP OFF. Had the game had waited another year, at least until what they have at start all the way up to the Taken King, the game would have been worth the buy, but as it was it was every bit as bad as those Early Access games on Steam.
+1nsan1ty ph03n1x $40 from what I heard. And they are putting the new emotes with the collector's edition in some desperate attempt to squeeze $80 from people for this.
I just discovered that the person on the original Destiny box art is facing backwards and wearing a cape and NOT, as I originally thought, facing forwards and wearing a really big poncho.
I don't know if anybody has told you this, IHE, but the fact that you can get out quality content once per week is commendable. You must put hard work into these videos and there isn't one series of yours I am either indifferent to or dislike. You deserve some kind of commemoration.
The “story” behind why the story is so dreadfully bad is actually quite funny. Joseph Staten and his team had the story finished, but shortly before launch the lead producers on the game decided they wanted to see what the story was about for the first time (they never checked in on it up to this point lol). They decided they didn’t like it because for reasons such as it being too campy so they scraped everything. Joseph Staten left Bungie shortly after this rejection, and the story he and his team wrote were turned into the grimoire cards. The producers formed a team they called “The Iron Bar” to scrambler together something that could resemble a story right at the end of development from pieces of the game that were already finished. Thus we got this absolute train wreck of a story.
I have a feeling that Destiny will eventually have one of the most complex, amazing, beautiful, inspiring, and meaningful stories ever told... after about 6 games. And I'll be over it by then.
I have no idea why you believe it would ever have a good story. Especially since video games stories get worse with every single iteration, not better.
I love coming back to this series. Just fun to rewatch. Especially as a way to remind myself that it's not worth going back into Destiny whenever I think of it. I still have yet to play Destiny 2 besides like 10-minutes of the start. I remember playing the game for the first time, then the finale mission happened. I was surprised. I was baffled. Like seriously? I thought I was getting to the 1/4 check mark, or at least the half way point. But no that was it. I remember having been ahead of my friend, and him and I played the finale mission and I was just sitting there waiting to hear his reaction.
Holy crap your channel is growing rapidly! Only two weeks ago you had reached 20k subscribers, and now you've got nearly 2 thousand more! Your videos are awesome by the way! Congratulations!
Honestly enjoy all of your videos, but this was really good! Despite the name, you still managed to provide a somewhat balanced analysis and gave in depth opinions which I and others can easily compare and identify with. In regards to the longer video, I could probs listen to you all day so I enjoy them.
It's strange to remember a time when everything IHE had to say about destiny could be said in less than half an hour. ...it's also strange to hear him with so much life in his voice at the start
It's hard to watch this video after the Lightfall review: we've gone from "organized mess" to "culturally destructive zeitgeist that gaming will never heal from" in 10 years
Lately, I've been watching all the videos on IHE from beginning to present. And I'd just like to say, even though I've never played (or had much interest in) video games, this video is still entertaining to me. I always enjoy the videos on IHE, and the style and editing are always entertaining. So, even though you get those "this was boring" comments, here's one from me: this was not boring. Thanks for all the hard work and honest opinions.
To be honest, I did enjoy Destiny on 360, but I felt incomplete after finishing the main game; the same thing occurred after finishing the DLCs (up to Taken King.) It felt like a Puzzle that lost some pieces; like a painting that was short a few brushstrokes; a beautiful song that was missing a few key notes.
The whole conspiracy segment reminds me of Spore. At E3 and in early prototypes there was way more depth, but in the final release, it was almost like a completely different game.
It's wired comeing back to this video with future context... I remember pre ordering this as a 14 year old, waiting for it to come through the door. Come home from school one day, seeing it gave me such a cheesey smile that I couldn't wait to play it... Then I play it.. The disappointment I felt when I finshed the story was so much, I felt like I wasted my money.
Thanks for clarifying this! I came to destiny relatively late. And remember just feeling... Dumb (for lack of a better term) that I didn't understand anything that was going on. I kept telling myself that there will be a 'penny drop' moment at some point. Next thing I knew the main game 'story' was over!! At this point all I knew was that there are 4 main 'baddy' races (but not much about them) and that they fight each other. No real understanding of who or what the traveller is. Or what the main goal of the guardians are. Oh, and there's something called Rasputin... That's about it. I even went to Wikipedia to try and answer some of these questions! Which helped a little. But I shouldn't have to just get a little more informative about what is supposed to be a story driven game Taken King was a little better but again I had to go to my trusted source, Wikipedia to help clarify what was going on. So glad that I wasn't the only one!
Watching this after finishing final shape. Kinda weird this started in 2014 and the game never really got good. It just had better and worse expansions. They just realized a lot of things in the final shape. It took them ten years so Crow and Cayde finally had their moment together. Lets see if we get more character development in 2034
MysticSkullivine I agree to a point. Graphics matter, because many people do like eye-candy. But eye-candy alone isn't enough to carry a game when story and content are seriously lacking.
I felt the exact same way playing through the game. When I reached the end I asked my friends what came next and was stunned to hear that that was the end. I couldn't put into words exactly why the game never quite hit any chords with me but you've just done it brilliantly.
I personally was unaware of the Destiny hype, and so I had 0 expectations. Because of this, I was completly, utterly fucking struck dumb with awe and amazement. In order to fully appreciate what Destiny is, you needed to be one of the people who had never heard of it, which is sad, because if you hadn't heard of it, it was very likely you would never come to play it.
This is clear evidence of a "creative control" contract. When bungie let activision be their publisher they signed a contract. Therein lies the problem. The contract probably had a clause saying the creative control would be given to activision. This explains why the story sucks (activision is not famous for publishing games with great stories like halo) the gunplay is above average to great (activision is a famous publisher of games like cod which has addicting gunplay) and what's left of the game is an attempt to squeeze every cent out of you. Case in point being the story was cut, slashed, and hacked into pieces or dlc. In conclusion, activision is following its time tested formula of over hyping a game, focusing on gunplay and basic gameplay while leaving things like in depth universe, story, and level design on the wayside. In essence it wanted to use bungie as a resource pool and hype generator. Bungie should've retained creative control. This is activision's fault. Not bungie's. I'll gladly buy a bungie game while bungie is independent or has creative control but I will never buy one while activision has its name next to bungie's on the box.
You are saying that a company that prior Halo always had made mediocre or averange games inst to blame at all? And of course when they made Halo they wanted to milk all the money that they could for their only sucessful game. I think here both are to blame, and for the same thing, for being completely greedy.
storm trooper #1501 Sorry, I not buy that bullshit, after many failed games. They didnt want to milk their only sucessful game? Sorry, but I not buy that.
@13:32 - "Those who have stared into the Void are not bound by the laws of space and time." - *Doctor Who* reference? O.o' Talking about artificial barriers and capped things... vanilla *Final Fantasy XIV* and *Final Fantasy XIII* come to mind. Their downfall too. Fun fact: It seems that I'm the opposite of you. I can forgive anything the game throws at me if the story is good. Thanks for the video and for the awesome outro card. See you in the *I HATE DESTINY 2* video. ;)
Yes I can see what you mean by, 'everyones a hero' and how stupid it is. It could have easily done something like WoW that leaves the main character as a grunt serving more important people. And if you do something amazing you can keep it to yourself knowing that the people you just got all those apples for just killed a dragon with a tooth pick.
True, and at least in Diablo III the Nephalem feels somewhat important considering you can choose to solo or play 2-4 player (unless 1-3 of the other players are carrying, then you feel useless and not important at all).
Exactly how i felt in year one. Picked up taken king and rise of iron and I'm actually in love with this game and the universe. Good job on bungie for eventually fixing destiny and making it a great game.
Blimblam Too bad that the only way to fix it if you already owned the game was to buy TTK and RoI for $40 and $30, respectively. Or, you can be one of those guys who waited until RoI came out and get everything for $60. I don't know, maybe I'm just still butt hurt that I went out of my way to buy the $120 Ghost Edition only to get an incomplete product, and then spend another $80 for the supposed free console upgrade, only for Bungie to make the game almost unplayable for anyone who didn't buy TTK. I've only recently returned to Destiny after someone gifted me TTK and RoI, and it's depressing to see how much better the game is now, entering the third year of its lifetime. It actually feels complete now.
I'm not being hyperbolic when i say that that thinking about this game can give me panic attacks, most of this has to do with familly stuff that I'm not getting into but when i can think of this game I am filled with memories of joy that are swiftly filled with thoughts of how few and far between they are
Red spike Ninja na he comes up with an actual analysis and backs up his claims and opinions with points and actually breaks down the material given. Cinemasins just nit picks movies which I believe isn’t really that hard.

If this whole "hate everything"-thing doesnt pan out for you, you could be a damn good game reviewer.
I second that

But that was long ago...
ReZisT Lust I could tell you about the collapse.. the fall of Bungie.. the epic battle of ripping gameplay for the DLC to make the most profit... but that was long ago, blah blah children are frightened anyways
@@TheReZisTLust ah yes
Such a shame because this game is so visually beautiful
Bear in mind - this is when the game was first released - it's been over a year now and the game's had a few DLCs - after The Taken King, the game became good
+LazarouDave no it hasn't
+Voodoo king and the spooky kids yes it has
+LazarouDave so you paid the game 3 times only to understand the damn story?Or it's all the same?Nevertheless, the game sucks
LazarouDave oh cool, I'll probably give them a go
My husband plays a lot of video games, and I like to watch him play in the background, but I hate games with weak stories and repetitive combat. Destiny came with his PS4, but I literally hated when he played it. Isn't escapism a huge part of video games? How can you escape to a half-baked world with no believable characters to latch onto?
It's called addiction
Thats good point, you must have a good taste for video games, your husband on the other hand...
for the most part, yes, unless it has actually innovative and changing gameplay like many nintendo games, or even elder scrolls (i know there is a story to all of them but i think i only beat a main story in those once)
It appears in the sequel game five years later 😂
Destiny should have been a book series tbh
@@curtissmith7039 Ehhhhhh no
@@GrayD_Fox there's a codex in the menus now
It isn't wonderful lore. It is something that sounds cool until you put even one braincell's worth of thought into and then you realize it is stupid.
6 years later, the Exo Stranger finally had time to explain.
And oh boy did she have stuff to explain!
Only took around 2000 days after launch, let’s go bungie!

Not really
I originally thought Destiny would be a futuristic version of Dark souls meets Elder scrolls. A action adventure title with Rpg elements. You could have fun with your mates and engage in pvp. I was wrong. *Sad sigh*
Wow. Didn't know Al is this cute :3

+The Crimson Fucker ikr
yup
The Armoured Alchemist Interesting, you're not alone with that disappointment.
I assumed Destiny was going to make it like world of warcraft level of openness, the exploration of skyrim and the combat system of halo.
Anyone else rewatching the entire series?
Yeeeeep
he recently mentioned how he made this video on the hunter biden laptop in a jarcast earlier this year so i had to see baby alex again

So pretty much halo 5
Acty boi?
Fuck off act man

It's okay. They'll put all this in the game!

Bungie: Write that down write that down
Technically the Fallen did try that twice prior to the Red War, first time was Six Fronts and the second was Twilight Gap

As much as I like Destiny, I don't really get that either.
rosestar1324 The shooting is solid but that's more or less it. I have a feeling some of the people who say that never played Borderlands 2 or warframe (came out way later ik but I can't think of another game of this genre).
Some concepts get executed so well...
But that's it. Some, not most, never all.
It simply refuses to die out, probably too much hope I guess.
“Have you heard of the black garden?”
“No I haven’t”
“I’ve heard about it”

you hit so hard with all these points its honestly saddening that the echo of the game in 2013 looks and sounds infinitely more entertaining and compelling than the entirety of Destiny- DLC and all currently. it looked like it was going to blow the doors off with how immersive and innovative it could've been. it really disappoints me that developer and infrastructure collapse with the company ruined what looked to be the most amazing game in years. every minute i played from start, to "story" finish felt completely hollow like it was missing its soul, there was no excitement or driving force behind it, it felt like i was doing all the work from the first interaction with The Speaker to the final moment killing the 3 carbon copy final bosses in the black garden. i truly hope that Bungie or someone gets a second chance to breath some real life into this game in a sequel or something. because looking at those Reddit posts in this video and seeing an old 2013 cut-scene; which i didn't even know existed, reminded me of what i thought this game was going to be when i pre-ordered it, fun.
Whole franchise deserves a reboot.
God
If all of this is true and you are a developer, this is very interesting.
This could be bullshit but it sounds like you know what you are talking about and it makes sense.
Thanks God

destiny could have been an amazing game
Like Halo 3 that game is way more fun than Destiny
EurynomeEclipse13th yeah that game is amazing but destiny... it's something I guess
Samuel Lees True, but for some reason I'm still addicted to this game...
Bboybolt I understand why people like it, but I just loved halo and bungee was incredibly great at making halo but for me they failed at destiny
Samuel Lees I blame Activision
I laughed at this game when I saw its story, multiplayer, mechanic, style, voice acting everything. Thank god Bungie didn't do this to halo..
I blame 60-75% on Activision.
Rage Angel I blame 95% on activision, they are the ones who wanted to dlc the game, also way strictier deadline than ms studios.
Dolphin Guy I also think Activision just brainwashed Bungie too. Just read this quote bungie's "creative" director said: "“If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen,”
Joshua Carrizo You know... Maybe you're right...
you mean thank god Activision didn't do this to Halo.
Destiny is prime example how not to do vague story.
If you want "vague" story go for Dark Souls instead
The vague story to be honest is what made the game so amazing (Dark Souls)
Stefan Stojanov Well the thing is that Dark Souls gives you the information if you want to learn.
Destiny on other hand.
Jacob Yeah that's what I meant haha
I haven't played Destiny but a bunch of the points he made such as being unable to interact with other players and brilliant art made made me think of the souls games. I wonder why it didn't work for this game?
ToadProductionINC That's it! They needed Hidetaka Miyazaki B)
It's funny going onto games like this where everybody is the only hero to save the world.
"Alright, I'm only hero, here to save the world. Don't worry guys. I got this!"
Some other players "W- wait. I am also the only hero to save the world. How are you the only hero?"
"Because they said so in the cut scene. They said I'm the *only* hero to save the world. Just ME"
"But everybody else..........is........also a hero.......the only hero"
"I'm the better only hero here."
*Max level player walks by* "Already saved the world."
"Bu- WHAT? I JUST GOT HERE. THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO SAVE THE WORLD. Ho- wha- how?! WHY tell me that bullshit. Why not say, there are all these kind of heroes, instead of making all players that one hero."
*random dude* "I'm half way to saving the world. What about you guys?"
"Wait, what? If the high level player already saved the world, and you're half way through, and I'm about start. What the fuck. I thought I was the only hero, but I guess there are individual worlds for individual heroes to save."
"Sure"
yeah, it's weird, but whatever, we can all save the world.
A game were all the NPCs are very sarcastic about you being "the chosen one" sounds pretty interesting. The only problems you managed to solve so far are gathering firewood and slaying sewer rats, but sure you're definitely the hero of legends
And this is why I cannot get invested or immersed into MMOs.
If you don’t like it don’t play mmo’s! You need to cut some slack for game mechanics

+Johnnythat1 Dude that seems a lot better then what we got
Is this another Halo Reach scenario? Where I'm the only one that liked the story, not kidding I loved Halo Reach.
+Johnnythat1 Dude I'm pulling for elements of the original story comes back in Destiny 2.... but i don't know. Bungie needs to drop Activison.
I went into this game with no information, no hype. Which is why, I guess, I enjoyed it so much.

You mean how they shown the plot
***** That would cause a *LOT* of issues with dedicated Destiny players. I'd go more into it, but I have to leave.
However, it wasn't told in enough detail to warrant anything more than "Hey that was kinda cool, I guess."
And two, please attempt to use punctuation.

Nolan North's great, but Dinklebot was so bad that he had this ironic charm to him. His disinterested monotone actually kinda fit his robotic aesthetic, as unintentional as it may be. Even the way he delivered a few of his intentionally funny lines managed to get a chuckle out of me.

+Tommy Bowles Same thing here.
+DracoSapphire me too
I dropped the crap game faster than my mom drop me.
Tommy Bowles I kept playing it until the taken king came out just because the guns and armour where just to God damn cool.
This makes me depressed and I hate hearing how Destiny could have been....

You are a genius.
He's relatively new. Give him time.
Why Not Zoidberg? Thats why I love his vids! :)
I'm surprised that the speaker hasn't become a meme yet, that would be actually funny

Destiny is just your average boring futuristic video game
you've obviously never done/seen a raid
+iSwimming 2 hours of constant fighting with same enemies...cool...
+Shockstalk With well made challenges, ESPECIALLY KINGS FALL.
Mate, for a game so empty, Kings Fall was like a week with the Mia Khalifa (or whatever)
Plus, grinding raids is more "fun"
Shooting a cave isn't.
Your character is brought back to life? How unbelievable! How curious! How exciting! And what is their reaction?
🗿
But still the story in game is garbage, i beat it at level 19 within like 2 days, and after that you dont even need to go on the maps cause all there is, is the same 4 raids that dont even take long
OfficialVanDyce Was hilarious when I beat the story at level 19 also and was like... wait, wtf, that's it?!????
James Vincent You're an idiot... I bought a VIDEO GAME... aka VIDEO. I'm not going to waste hours on a fucking WEBSITE on my COMPUTER when I bought a VIDEO GAME for my XBOX ONE. Get with the program you fucking moron.
James Vincent Handing someone a fictional glossary is not good storytelling. You have to weave it into the gameplay for it to be good.
Nice music.
It is nice, great even. I wonder who composed it
Woah didn’t expect to see you here all of a sudden!
I dont get why people say they're the same but since you havn't played destiny, I'll tell you a few reasons why they're different
1). the story of borerlands 2 is WAY more interesting and enjoyable than Destiny's. Simple as that
2)The side quests in Borderlands actually tell a story, even if most are fecth quest they're still entertaining.
3) Borderlands 2 has a crap ton of characters that are memorable, funny, and have back story.
4) The loot system in Destiny is way to random. At least in Borderlands theres side quests with a guaranteed rewards and bosses with high drop rates for rare gear.
They may have similar concepts but they're not the same.
archerfan66 Maybe he meant a crap copy of Borderlands? iunno
I figured out how to say "This wizard is from the moon"
(Angrily) " *THIS* Wizard is from *the* MOON!"
I wouldn't say I hated Destiny.....but for 60 bucks it is an absolute RIP OFF.
Had the game had waited another year, at least until what they have at start all the way up to the Taken King, the game would have been worth the buy, but as it was it was every bit as bad as those Early Access games on Steam.
watsyurdeal isn't the taken king exspose to be 60 bucks?
+1nsan1ty ph03n1x $40 from what I heard. And they are putting the new emotes with the collector's edition in some desperate attempt to squeeze $80 from people for this.
new emotes for 40 extra bucks what a rip off -_-
Stfu ark is the shit
60 bucks is nothing if you have a decent job
I just discovered that the person on the original Destiny box art is facing backwards and wearing a cape and NOT, as I originally thought, facing forwards and wearing a really big poncho.
Man….how far we’ve lightfallen
looks like no man sky is destiny all over again, except nms didn't spend half a billion dollars on their production
That money went to the franchise, not just the first game.
What Bleach said, but that doesn't excuse what Destiny has done.
Agreed
The lies of No Man's Sky go far beyond the hype of Destiny...
But the greed of Destiny lingers beyond NMS
Am I only guy destroyed destiny when I finished I took hammer and smash the disk
thats a lie
Eh I liked it also it came with my ps4 because I wanted a different color controller/console
+Nickthekingduck nah I'd say it was werf
***** ya I think they did
Why would you smash it when you get a refund and play Warframe instead
I don't know if anybody has told you this, IHE, but the fact that you can get out quality content once per week is commendable. You must put hard work into these videos and there isn't one series of yours I am either indifferent to or dislike. You deserve some kind of commemoration.
geocraftsman Thank you man!
I Hate Everything Glad to help!
I've been playing Destiny/Destiny 2 for about 5 years now, and I still have no idea what the main storyline is.
Perhaps I can pool what I know, I’m very interested in these smaller character stories in the season to season stuff.
This video has aged so well. Crazy how little has changed lol
I have a feeling that Destiny will eventually have one of the most complex, amazing, beautiful, inspiring, and meaningful stories ever told... after about 6 games. And I'll be over it by then.
Tbf its not like the best Story Ever, but its gotten ALOT better so you sorta presicted it right
@@DaToby98 i was right except for the being over it part lol, I still play this shit way to much
I have no idea why you believe it would ever have a good story. Especially since video games stories get worse with every single iteration, not better.
This didn't aged well. Not because we're stuck at D2. Because... other reasons. Example given - Bungie following definition of insanity.
Who's watching this gloriously nostalgic review in 2019?
I love coming back to this series. Just fun to rewatch. Especially as a way to remind myself that it's not worth going back into Destiny whenever I think of it. I still have yet to play Destiny 2 besides like 10-minutes of the start.
I remember playing the game for the first time, then the finale mission happened. I was surprised. I was baffled. Like seriously? I thought I was getting to the 1/4 check mark, or at least the half way point. But no that was it. I remember having been ahead of my friend, and him and I played the finale mission and I was just sitting there waiting to hear his reaction.
I mean, you said there aren't any character to be attached to, and I agree with you... almost. I really liked the ghost little floating guy.
Holy crap your channel is growing rapidly! Only two weeks ago you had reached 20k subscribers, and now you've got nearly 2 thousand more! Your videos are awesome by the way! Congratulations!
And he deserves so many more!!!!!
He grew 3x from July, but this channel is criminally underrated. He deserves at least over 100,000
Honestly enjoy all of your videos, but this was really good!
Pre-Activision Bungie: "There was a time...where we were much more powerful.."
Every once in a while I take the IHE destiny sabbatical
It's hard to watch this video after the Lightfall review: we've gone from "organized mess" to "culturally destructive zeitgeist that gaming will never heal from" in 10 years
Lately, I've been watching all the videos on IHE from beginning to present. And I'd just like to say, even though I've never played (or had much interest in) video games, this video is still entertaining to me. I always enjoy the videos on IHE, and the style and editing are always entertaining. So, even though you get those "this was boring" comments, here's one from me: this was not boring. Thanks for all the hard work and honest opinions.
Well now, how nice of you. I agree, IHE is great and I hardly have played anything recently.
Am I the only one who was waiting for a "Fuck this Game"moment like in his search for the worst?
Damn, probably should have done that!
Thank me later.
I Hate Everything probably the best moment you should put it in to is 9:03 It practicly calls for it.
+I Hate Everything or 5:39.
There was no warning at the beggining of the video, so I ended up getting my ghost in a twist.
I just came from the Destiny 2 video and its hilarious how depressed he sounds in that video compared to this.
"and then rubbing that salted wound onto another salted wound".... I lol'd.
But I shouldn't have to just get a little more informative about what is supposed to be a story driven game
Taken King was a little better but again I had to go to my trusted source, Wikipedia to help clarify what was going on.
So glad that I wasn't the only one!
Watching this after finishing final shape. Kinda weird this started in 2014 and the game never really got good. It just had better and worse expansions.
They just realized a lot of things in the final shape. It took them ten years so Crow and Cayde finally had their moment together. Lets see if we get more character development in 2034
This game is proof that graphics don't matter, it's the damn game play & story line & plot that does.
Meh, I suppose I've never played CoD (I'm not into FPS games)
MysticSkullivine I agree to a point. Graphics matter, because many people do like eye-candy. But eye-candy alone isn't enough to carry a game when story and content are seriously lacking.
"I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain"
I guess her face was tired from all that? xD
Warframe is what Destiny tried to be.
It's got parkour, ass, and dogs, I don't know what else is needed.
warframe came out before destiny so that doesn't make any sense
Mr. Insanity, you need common sense.
1nsan1ty ph03n1x I don't think that's how time works...
Wait nvm I read the comment wrong xd
1nsan1ty ph03n1x It happens to the best of us m8
try saying "it was the wizard from the moon" had me n stitches
i thought that destiny was just going to be a more serious version of the borderlands series
Same for me
Same
well i still can't deny its big flaws. the crucible is a mess and it has a shitty story. and the content draughts are real.
but i still love the game
Watching this in April 2024 for nostalgia
TheKeyser94 microsoft want's to milk halo not bungie
storm trooper #1501 Sorry, I not buy that bullshit, after many failed games. They didnt want to milk their only sucessful game? Sorry, but I not buy that.
@13:32 - "Those who have stared into the Void are not bound by the laws of space and time." - *Doctor Who* reference? O.o'
Talking about artificial barriers and capped things... vanilla *Final Fantasy XIV* and *Final Fantasy XIII* come to mind. Their downfall too.
Fun fact: It seems that I'm the opposite of you. I can forgive anything the game throws at me if the story is good.
Thanks for the video and for the awesome outro card. See you in the *I HATE DESTINY 2* video. ;)
Fuck I hate this game...it's like gambling....keep playing not because I enjoy it, but rather because I want the unreachable..
Sleeveless Shirt Play borderlands, ez.
Matt Carrisosa all 3 are great! haven't played the pre sequel tho :/
Jayson Higgins DW, pre sequel was a huge dissapointment that no one plays anymore
Unshot Gaming really? I am still gonna get it to play with with fwends tho. ty for the info tho.
Sleeveless Shirt funny, cause when I don't like something I stop playing it... rather than keep playing it then bitching about it in a youtube comment
ReaperEOD Yes! But I generally play diablo solo
Lotr=halo
The ring is destroyed at the end
Almost 10 years later, the story is still absolute dogshit and has turned into an extremely predatory "pay-to-win" dumpster fire.
The story is whatever but the lore Is amazing
Warframe>Destiny
+chubby walrus
"destiny>every game ever"
Said no one ever
Anything>Boreframe
+chubby walrus Dark Souls > Every game
Borderlands>Destiny
Destiny > Warframe, all of you noobs need to shut up
His voice has changed so much
I'm not being hyperbolic when i say that that thinking about this game can give me panic attacks, most of this has to do with familly stuff that I'm not getting into but when i can think of this game I am filled with memories of joy that are swiftly filled with thoughts of how few and far between they are
''That wizard came from the moon'' - Dinklebot hahahahahahahahahaha
IHE would be perfect at cinemasins
*ding*
Cinemasins is shit
Red spike Ninja na he comes up with an actual analysis and backs up his claims and opinions with points and actually breaks down the material given. Cinemasins just nit picks movies which I believe isn’t really that hard.
Replied to wrong person there bud. I agree 100% with you tho
Red spike Ninja lol my B bebe
holy shit nothing's really changed in destiny 2
@HARRYRANTS your in denial
@HARRYRANTS haha someones being bungies little bitch how is it on that fence up there mate you cant admit the game is average and copy and paste
"That's what V2 is for!"
8:28 I swear, that MUST be a reference to that broadcast hijack a few decades back that had an alien from I believe the 'Ashtar collective' warning Earth of its impending doom due to having nuclear weapons now.
Destiny 2 will be known as, "The Last Chance."
Jo King yup
Welp, it fucked up
sarojh Maffle yup
