Because when there are infinite possibilities, the one common factor ends up being the limited and biased source of imagination, which is us, humans. Also because most of the time the goal is to make easy money.
Sometimes restrictions can breed creativity more than freedom. Freedom can be paralyzing esp if you’re working for a soulless company with no real vision. For example lots of early video games were incredibly creative with the restrictions they were given due to technical limitations.
I think hardest part about traditional sci fi is grounding character journeys and goals on a scale that is relatable without losing the audience to their own imaginations and thus losing the focus of your story
Simply because the writers aren’t creative enough to fully harness and seize the potential of the sci-if genre. That and they were more focused on the live action part of the game than delivering an interesting narrative.
Not An NPC yeah until he’s traveled to Georgia (in the southern US of course) and had a berry pie made by a middle-aged lady in a small town nobody’s ever heard of, he’s never _truly_ eaten a pie
Just "Lancers" would have worked way better, since they use Javelins. Calling them freelancers makes them sound like underpaid graphic artists than soldiers.
I still cant really believe that Anthem is already out. THIS is what was supposed to be the big Mass effect replacement? I think i'd rather play Andromeda.
I like to think that day I played Super Mario drunk off my ass I condemned countless universes to... I don't know? come to think of it, Bowser is pretty chill and I wouldn't mind a world ruled by him. At least he's there.... the Mushroom King has done nothing for us.
Exactly. The real life US military has failed many times, yet people still have faith. Why? Because before they failed, they succeeded on the mission, which is what the freelancers did. Am I right?
Alexander Zheng buddy you’re making barely any sense and definitely arguing for no reason. Got off the internet you’re going to embarrass yourself, go play outside kid.
At least Destiny worked properly at launch. Anthem at launch had problems even rolling stats on its weapons; in the game I have a gun with 0 in every stat, which I've held onto after the bug was patched since it's such a hilarious thing to own.
Actually, Alex... trivia time: The game isn't called Anthem because of the Anthem of Creation - the Anthem of Creation is a thing because the game is called Anthem. That's right - they originally had a different name for the game, couldn't stick with that one, renamed the game Anthem, and then came up with a story that would give the name "Anthem" some meaning. *_NOT MAKING THIS UP._*
I heard about this IIRC they wanted to call it beyond but the executives at the top started shitting bricks because they weren't able to get the trademark.
The section at 13:20 where he talks about the writing and dialogue for the protagonist is SPOT ON, and quite accurately describes what I hate about the writing for Carol in Captain Marvel. These characters don't have a personality, they don't have flaws, they don't struggle with anything and they don't CARE about anything, and the writer seems to think that having them drool out snarky one-liners every 2 seconds is basically the same thing as making an interesting or relatable character.
@Kathy Kat To be fair, Anthem launched in a similar situation as Destiny and had a 10 year plan with ActiBlizzard (cut short now). If they find a way for it to print money like that game did after launch, you can bet it'll get one.
U mean "Anthem: the shit we didn't put in the first game on purpose so we can get a part 2 going." Oh wait, thats Destiny 2 and Division 2, my bad, i confused the three.
Destiny was a siappointment, Antehm was a bootleg Destny disappointment, although we didn't expected to be good...so expectations met, and Division ok. If you were to play any of these three games, pick the Division...at least then it's ok. If you were to take out the Destiny layer that's added to it, then you would just get a standard TPS. And it's ok. It's not mind blowing...just...ok....
Sometimes its funny to go back to this video just to get reminded this game even existed. It feels like a fever dream. I am genuinely surprised EA hasn't unlisted it yet. Nobody plays this. Nobody works on this either.

I was actually thanking god, I've been very curious to know about the details of the game's story without purchasing it and too many people treat it as sacred. Now I know what flavor of trash it is. That's all I wanted.
And just like Bungie, all of the people who made the studio what it was have long gone. I really don't understand why people keep letting themselves be charmed by the typical and generic "We've learned from our mistakes" and "This is our biggest bestest game ever!" quotes.
It's not generic, it's a sci-fi shooter that fails to capture the same thing that strikes a good cord with in Warframe. Warframe is far from perfect but does things miles better than both destiny and anthem.
If i remember correctly, the game of anthem itself was made in about a year and a half, it wasn't even being built when it got teased at the game cons. (They had multiple years of pre-development and most of their ideas had to be trashed due to time and engine limitations.) Not really an excuse because they should have started earlier, but still context.
@Arisa Yeah. Though at least in Anthem it was a cutscene you could watch in the game. To see the attack on Insomnia, you have to watch the Kingsglaive movie. Funny enough, the attack on Insomnia was going to be an experienceable moment when the game was Versus XIII instead of XV. It was one of the many great things that got cut when the game got rebranded. I really dislike what happened with Final Fantasy XV, and I would've much preferred that we had gotten Versus XIII.
In Destiny the game is played in First Person and the hub world is 3rd person. In Anthem the game is played in 3rd person and the hub world is in First person. Not the same at all!
I really enjoy plaing anthem but every critisism i heard about the game is true. also its very similar to destiny. i like the gameplay of both games but i agree nearly everything else beside it is weak
Was never a need to play this game, either play Destiny or play warframe, shoot even play Titanfall, all three of these games cover every element of this game but better.
BioWare isn't free from blame. Their company has become full of diversity hires and they literally invited Anita Sarkeesian to help advise developers on ME:Andromeda and Anthem.
And even more loading screens were removed till now. ;) direct access to forge from everywhere, also in the missions. And you can start another mission without going back to tarsis!
Sad fact; BioWare is actually at fault. They had years to make a game but when EA asked where the game was they basically said “oh shit” so they rushed it. The video at E3 was a movie not the actual game.
To me it looks like it was more of the leadership for anthems fault, they sat on their asses not telling their employees what they were doing or what the game was and not deciding anything for most of the development and telling everyone to rely on “BioWare magic” Wasn’t until Casey and Mark joined back on that anything got done. Top that with the fact that talking and taking any inspiration from Destiny was forbidden, they wouldn’t listen to their Austin team that made SWOTOR and had learnt from MMO mistakes and the frostbite engine being a piece of shit. The entire development was a delusional mess of hubris from those in charge. At least that’s what it looks like to me.
@@fluro3769 Yep. Not since the development for Final Fantasy XV have I seen such a massive development nightmare. But at least the director(s) and such for Final Fantasy XV were doing their best with a terrible hand the Square Enix executives had given them.

14:05 "At least if you were silent you could inhabit your own values and live though the other characters. But when your un-named protagonist is so badly written that you'd rather have them basically be non-existent then you have kind of destroyed the access point that is supposed to ease us into this expansive intimidating universe." Spot on. Thinking about this, this was a major problem I had with Fallout 4 as well.
EA: Why don’t you, instead of making a game, just add in some things and sell it for $60. Then why don’t you add in some more things for people to pay for.
"How dare you, Anthem is going to become really awesome, like best thing ever" Says increasingly nervous fanboy after EA-Bioware patched out any resemblence of fair loot again.
And tbh even with the increased drop the loot is still garbage. Its just that its a lot easier picking up lots of garbage and picking up a little bit of garbage. One you have a better chance of finding something not garbage and the other you spend 30+ minutes on the hardest difficulty and MAYBE get one kinda not trash loot drop.
You know what would have been cool? What if the Monitor was the last Urgoth alive and wanted the ultimate Mcguffin to revive his dead race. It's at least better than just wanting to be perfect.
I like some pies. It's a pretty vast category, so I think it's unfair to declare that you don't like any of them. I can't stomach apple pie, but I'll happily chow down on a meat pie. Blueberry pie is alright too. It's like saying you don't like cake; there are a lot of different kinds of cake to choose from. Now, if IHE has indeed tried every kind of pie, or at least enough to cover enough of the category to make such a general statement, this criticism obviously doesn't apply. Generalizations are merely a pet peeve of mine. Like saying you don't like vegetables. Neither do I, but I do like a handful of vegetables, like cucumber and bell pepper. So it's preferable to say I don't like _most_ vegetables, or that I _usually_ don't like vegetables. This has been an utterly pointless rant about something only faintly related to the video.
Excuse me, are you 5? I never understand why people don't like vegetables, just eat them instead of overly fatty or sugary stuff and eventually you'll like it. It opens your palette to so many more foods and flavors and is just generally good for you
I like most fruit pies. At this moment I dont think I could stomache a meat pie, but I still do enjoy it when the time is right. Christmas or Thanksgiving are examples of these occasions.
Jack off of all trades? I don't know a clever way to spin this thing so it properly reflects the actual shit-show of a graphical mishap that is this so called game.
Man, imagine if our choices could've prevented Owen from betraying us. Like maybe our dialogue or something could change the fate of the characters. That way, the dialogue would also affect the combat since this either causes Owen to go against you, or for him to understand and continue to side with you but with a stronger bond.

"I can't properly compliment anything without bringing up significant caveats." An incredible quote for a flop of this magnitude. Though I'm not sure anyone will happen across this comment 4 years after this video's release, not much has been changed or improved with the game. Legendary contracts were added as a form of high-difficulty daily tasks and take place in the open world. Endgame activities include these contracts, waiting around for world events (think Public Events from Destiny, albeit on a 1 to 3 star scale of how much XP they give), and the aforementioned Strongholds. Strongholds are only done by people who want to top each month's speedrun on the in-game leaderboards, as they provide little loot and XP. There is no difference in XP gain between Easy, Normal, Hard, Grandmaster 1, GM2, and GM3. New players are encouraged to stay on Easy or be carried through GM3 content by other players to slowly level up their "gear score" to around 600, and their character level to 30. I'm at gear score 240 and character level 14, both from 30 hours of gameplay. If you want to max out (gear score 960), going below GM 3 means that items will always drop 5 levels under the max, as a nice little arbitrary sprinkle on top of that which is the loot system. Easy or GM3, plenty of wasted development time balancing the rest of the difficulties. Loot only matters if it's Masterworked (additional special modifiers like +50% Damage and +40% Ult Recharge) and if it can set up combos. This game didn't need a crafting or gear score system at all. Some good things still have happened. The servers are still running. The microtransactions are still running as well, but are not as intrusive as Destiny, especially Destiny 2 as of this comment. There is still a semi-active community through the Discord server, and new players are still helped out by old players. Though I shouldn't grant BioWare any excuse with this horrendously shallow story (I still haven't completed the Javelin of Dawn quest and was surprised by how uninteresting the rest is), the currently small playerbase feels eerily similar to the outcast nature of the Javelin Pilots. This game isn't worth anyone's time, money, or attention, yet it simply feels good to play. The feel and sound of the Javelins and weapons is masterclass, especially if you pick Colossus, since the lack of movement options feels natural on a 2 ton behemoth. The fact that the game is no longer being serviced live means I don't have to suffer from any FOMO like in Destiny 2. I can't praise the game, not a lot, but I most certainly enjoy seeing anyone pop onto the game to try it out, as nothing else in my library comes close to the graphical fidelity and the raw fun of having a customizable Iron Man game.
Thanks for taking the time to write this, Anthem popped into my mind recently. Ive never played the game but I'm glad to hear theres still a loyal player base out there supporting Anthem, even if it doesn't necessarily deserve it
you know, they REALLY should have gone with the 0 protag rout. You are a Solider / Clone / Robot / AI / whatever generic "one of many" tropes. Not the Chosen One, but one of the ants who might get lucky. You aren't Special, you were Given / Found / Simply Chosen / Specked into / Stole your Suit and are doing what you can with the other users. It wouldn't even be hard to justify Co-op, Like PR, Commercials, Radio Broadcasts "Working Alone is Dangerous, Buddy up" or "Work Together, Or Fall Alone" Or something. Like, that alone would fix most of this. Hell, add on you find your upgrades from dead Armor, old armor, abandoned suits and tripping over it. "You are no one, one of many, you will die, but who knows, you might actually pull it off"
Right! But I don't get why MMO's and Games like this NEED the "1 True Hero" trope? because at the very core of the game, This is not what MMO's are. You are Literally one of (WoW) Millions and that is how it should be played. "Sole Survivor" "The Chosen One" "Secretly a god" work VERY well for First Person Games. Hell, that would even work for the Meta of an MMO but YOU the player should be a deg who is "doing their part" to Start or Stop the apocalypse Anthem, You AREN'T the Sole Survivor, You are "Pilot 456 out of Millions who FOUND (Stole) a Suit of Armor. Blade and Soul, You AREN'T the Sole Survivor of having your Clan destroyed, you are Backup sent by the Clan to help the Gods. Fallout 76 "The Experiment has Ended > Go Rebuild America" instead of The Late bloomer looking for the Leader in a dead world. Like, This isn't a hard concept to follow. I get that companies are trying to Reel in the Elusive First Person Market, but they forget that a "Live Service" Model needs Players.... not Sole Survivors.
Like, When you Joined a Guild in an MMO, or hell Second Life that HAD NO PLOT, Players weren't there to be the The Chosen One, it was social interaction and that's about it. Eve Online's 50k sustained users Weren't there for the combat... I mean it was nice, but MOST were in Trade hubs blowing up chat or in Mining groups having deep philosophical debates about toilet paper directions and many of the original players are still there.
I'm here 2 years after this video, and ... lol Anthem is not going to be fixed. I hate to be all like "I called it!" but ever from the very first video I ever saw of this game, while it was absolutely jaw-droppingly gorgeous, it just looked so... bland. not interesting. not engaging. not enticing. So much so, that I never bought it, never played it, and I just sat back and watched it crash and burn, with a smug smile on my face because, well, I called it. RIP. And RIP everyone's wasted money.

This was such a painful problem of F76. All the world building and lore were punted into computer terminal entries or audio logs. Except you can't even pause/resume a single audio log. If you get forced into combat by respawning enemies, your buddies start going BLAM BLAM BLAM, or start talking, or something IRL comes up? Fuck you! Restart the audio log! So everytime you found a terminal or audio tape (there were hundreds of taps and I don't know how many terminal entries), it felt like you needed to scream "EVERYONE SHUT UP AND STOP HAVING FUN! IT'S READING/AUDIO TAPE TIME!" That or you just played the game solo, like IHE did, thus ignoring the whole "play with friends/MP" part of the game. Games like The Division, Destiny and Anthem sell pretty well and because they are long have low resale at the first 3 months. Those months are critical for a new game because they are selling at full price and allow the Publisher to recover money fast.
I just hate this type of protagonist so much, oh my god. This type of... etheral creature. No origins, no family, no story - blank enough to make it seem like a self-insert but actually impossible to relate to because they were injected with a wacky sense of humor just for the sake of making it look like they have some sort of personality, which only ends up making them look dumb and not believable for a penny. It gets even worse if the game keeps calling you the hero when the story is actually driven exclusively by the other characters and you're basically just a random overpowered mcguffin guy following along. Either commit 100% to the self-insert way with a silent and completely blank protag that I have to fully rp with, either balance it with great decisions, choices and lore like in the Mass Effect, either give us a protag with an already established personality and story that I have to discover and enjoy as is because you don't always have to insert yourself into the main character to enjoy a game. Don't try to do the three at the same time or you get a game that is very unsatisfying because the main window through which you look at it, aka the player character, is just uninteresting at best and unbearable at worst.
@PasserMontanus I'll have to disagree. In both these games, while the protagonist is silent, they're not blank, because you can make them whoever you like. Neither are they injected with a wacky premade humor. In these games, you are given a relatively large pool of options to RP their personalities through dialogues, origins, stats and specializations, etc. And the way you personalize your character influence the decisions that are avaible to you. And you are actually the hero, you actually drive the story in those games, you're not just an overpowered sidekick for the real protagonist. In fact, Dragon Age Origins lets you decide on your character's personality and morality much more than its two sequels, which are more restricted. It's actually pretty well balanced in terms of role-playing. The protagonists of DAO and NWN could never even dream of approaching the degree of emptiness and cringe of the Anthem protag.
NintendoHub almost all of the issues with this game make me think of Monster Hunter: World, in how that game did everything Alex brings up right. It’s weird thinking how similar the 2 games are in a way
How could they not do the same thing? If you'll look to your left, you'll find the answers. See that? It's all the f-ks Bioware doesn't give. And if you look to your right, you'll see the rest of the f-ks bioware doesn't give.
Spoiler alert: nothing changed since this video was made. Sorry! Edit: Oh, wait! They changed the boring "trials", now if your multiplayer "friends" do whatever the "trial" requires, it also counts for you. Good luck finding someone on the multiplayer, though...

I don't understand how sci-fi can be so disappointing... there are literally infinite possibilities, yet it keeps being so samey.
Because when there are infinite possibilities, the one common factor ends up being the limited and biased source of imagination, which is us, humans. Also because most of the time the goal is to make easy money.
Because sci-fi translates to spectacle for video game developers.

That's right - they originally had a different name for the game, couldn't stick with that one, renamed the game Anthem, and then came up with a story that would give the name "Anthem" some meaning. *_NOT MAKING THIS UP._*

"You are no one, one of many, you will die, but who knows, you might actually pull it off"
Star Wars Battlefront series pulled it off perfectly though... The older series, I mean.
This would have worked so well
Hell, that would even work for the Meta of an MMO but YOU the player should be a deg who is "doing their part" to Start or Stop the apocalypse
Anthem, You AREN'T the Sole Survivor, You are "Pilot 456 out of Millions who FOUND (Stole) a Suit of Armor.

Well I guess you do have a minor dislike of the game, fair enough.
Inb4 u get h8
"I have gripes with Anthem" doesn't generate nearly the amount of traffic that every UA-camr needs to pay off loans. Also, it's not British enough... I learned that lesson when I visited Birmingham five years ago. Either you have a seething hatred (hidden behind a meek exterior), or an unwavering boastful love for something.
Javelin isn’t even a creative name for a mech, they were also the names of grunt suits from Mobile Suit Victory Gundam from 1993
"The we lost the faith of the people..."
Hmmm.... if only EA would take a hint from their stories.
I can not believe you hating such a gem and contribution to our society that is sure to turn any afternoon into a scrumptious fest of fun that you could practically smell. It unreluctantly breeds in our culture due to humanities addiction towards it I mean could you imagine life without such a product it would be bleak and distasteful and not worth the time investing in
I am of course talking about pie

28:54 "There needs to be ACTION, ACTION all the time otherwise your friends might get bored" thats why i hate multiplayer games. Its allways just run and gun.
Friends: "skip the cutscene, its boring as hell!"
Me: "But i want to know whats happening in the story."
Friends: "BORING!"
IT'S READING/AUDIO TAPE TIME!"
That or you just played the game solo, like IHE did, thus ignoring the whole "play with friends/MP" part of the game.
Like BW, BGS had no idea what it was doing making a multiplayer game.
In online games like this it makes sense to skip cutscenes
@@duncanlutz3698 that is why I will always perfer and play single player games more besides the fact that all multiplayer games are temporary (servers shut down eventually)
Feels like the people who make games, don't actually play games.
Paskaloth They do, its the investors that don't
That feels so tru
Water is wet, saying that there are 2 genders is offensive these days. More riveting news at 11.
@@jacksmith8689 investors do play games. The problem is that if something is treding they want every game to do that. See PUBG (battle royal or free for all for old geezers) now, Call of Duty (militart fps) then and Double Dragon (beat'n'up) way back.
Games like The Division, Destiny and Anthem sell pretty well and because they are long have low resale at the first 3 months. Those months are critical for a new game because they are selling at full price and allow the Publisher to recover money fast.

This game is pretty much Warframe with all of the stuff people liked about it removed.
Jack O'Flynn And also $60
Oh no, The endless grind is certainly still here!
Everyone enjoys grindframe. At least there’s a multitude of different stuff you can grind for.
Very well said.
It's a classic BioWare protagonist, though. It was the same in Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age: Origins.
In keeping with Anthem tradition can we just refer to you as “UA-camr” from now on?

28:00 Dark Souls 2 knew how to stack health depending on how many players were in the area to fight the boss. How could they not do the same thing?
NintendoHub and it’s a much older game lol
NintendoHub almost all of the issues with this game make me think of Monster Hunter: World, in how that game did everything Alex brings up right. It’s weird thinking how similar the 2 games are in a way
Dark Souls 1 does that, hell it's a Souls series tradition.
Demon's Souls had it.
Raiden The Jack I wanted to say Dark Souls 1 as well but wasn’t too sure since I didn’t play much online on it compared to 2
How could they not do the same thing? If you'll look to your left, you'll find the answers. See that? It's all the f-ks Bioware doesn't give. And if you look to your right, you'll see the rest of the f-ks bioware doesn't give.
