The DKC games go alongside Yoshi's Island as platformers that are so well designed that watching a well-executed speedrun is almost as entertaining as playing the game yourself. This relay race was one of my favourite events from AGDQ 2017.
Wow, cool to see Silent Wolf, a melee player is also a great DKC1 speed runner, cool to see James Chen, a FGC commentator, teacher, and news reporter reading donations, and it's cool to see Mang0 a melee god, donating during the run. United we stand.

thanks! high praise, indeed! glad you enjoyed :) A ROM hack like that would be awesome to see, for sure! Right now I'm not aware of anybody running one though, so not sure who could submit it. Maybe there's an opportunity for you to do it!
"Still a better ski grab than bluntbunny" Bluntbunny is another dkc3 runner and Supreme is saying he is better at grabbing the ski that drops off the boss.
2:19:10 "DKC1 and DKC2 have very nice, natural difficulty curves. I mean, the worlds get gradually harder as you progress through the game." I don't understand why this guy still says this. Maybe it was just me, but Gorilla Glacier in DKC1 was a brick wall to the face when I used to play it. I would not say that DKC1 has a natural difficulty curve. As for DKC2...yeah, that sounds about right.
Felt bad for V0oid. Was ahead in DKC1 up until the roll jumps that were missed, basically creating an insurmountable distance between him and the competition, and then the deaths on Gusty Glade and Castle Crush. He's still the best runner of everyone there.
The goal is to raise more money by having donors choose whether or not they want the animals at the end of super metroid to be killed. It is sort of a side quest.
It's called a jumproll. Basically, just press Y on a frame where you're falling on an enemy yet still on the ground (ie, the game still lets you roll, but you're starting to bounce off of an enemy).
Love this new format because it stops blugeglass from being able to ruin everything with his laugh or lean over the chairs to bother the runners by asking questions every 5 seconds.
I'm kinda new with these runs and AGDQ in general, whats does it mean "kill the animals" or "save the animals"? Pretty sure it's an inside joke or something, but I don't find anything about it.
At the end of Super Metroid, there's an option to either save some friendly animals or just leave them behind. It's faster to skip them, but nicer to save them. So there's a bid war that goes throughout the marathon, highest total decides.
I like DKC3 a lot, but it is a bummer that there are multiple auto-scroller levels that force you to stay within the screen. There's no reason logic-wise as to why the Kongs can't keep moving up and up past the saw or burning rope in Ripsaw Rage and Kong-Fused Cliffs respectively. Once again I'm surprised that they think that DKC3's difficulty is a brick wall in comparison to the previous games. I always though DKC1 had the worst difficulty curve, with Snow Barrel Blast being a 10m brick wall. K3 in comparison to Mekanos didn't feel too much more difficult to me as a kid. DKC2 probably had the best difficulty curve. I was hoping that Team Kiddy would win, Kiddy being the underdog...but oh well. Diddy is the fastest character after all.
Yeah it's definitely a bummer that there's not a great way to skip those autoscrollers. the TAS can skip Burn Your Rope with a long series of frame perfect inputs, and there is a zip you can do to skip about 12 seconds of Ripsaw in the 103% run, but sadly that's all. I was referring more specifically to W6,7, and 8 being where the difficulty picks up a lot in DKC3. K3 and Mekanos are probably comparable - agreed. It's just that the jump from W5 to W6 in difficulty is very abrupt, IMO. I agree - DKC2 has the smoothest curve.
I like how they do crazy 1 frame tricks in the game to save 0.7 seconds, but changing the fucking seat and starting the new game they're like grandmas taking their time.
Runners weren't allowed to start the next game until a certain point in the previous game's credits so there was no reason to be fast about the transition.
Man I thought I played donkey Kong to much betting it every day but according to this I'm not doing enough Mabey I should play 5hrs a day man I could be happy doing that I love the game it's the best
I hate when they are about to talk about something interesting and then get side tracked and never get back on topic :( happens all the time in these runs!
wecameasandys I would say that, unfortunately, that's the downside of race commentary. You have multiple runners approaching multiple tricks all the time and there is soooo much to talk about in these games. I would say the commentators did an excellent job.
Team Kiddy lost loads of time when the signal was lost. Pretty sure Void had to wait for it to come back, so the team lost time. I also think it would've been better to count the individual times, add those, and then see what team won.
He didn't. Just pay attention to his hands when the screen fades in and out. He waits on the map before starting levels so the audience doesn't miss it.
He did. He was on a boss fight when the signal was lost for the second time. He was probably waiting for the boss death animation to end and then, coincidently the signal was reestabilished. If he waited for it anyway, he only lost a few seconds.

Michael Kanis You, sir, just earned a like 'cause of Tool. And for staying perfectly relevant and in accord to the video. Thanks for the info.
Extremely impressive. Congrats to the runners and thanks to the community!
Awesome race - DKC runs often have some of the best commentary @ GDQs
Things you only hear at GDQ: "Very very nice crackhead from Waffle".
I was so distracted by the guy in pink that looks like a dastardly villain that I didn't notice Silent Wolf until he was pointed out.
Eazinn's comeback was outstanding!!
Thank you! :)
Very excellent!! Best trilogy of all time!
I was outstanding, to the point that after DKC1, the race became a lot less interesting because there were no other comebacks.
Came for #TeamRootBeer, stayed for SilentWolf and GDQ
Eazinn, freaking legend. Messed up the extended roll in the very first stage and also died in the 3rd, still managed to finish first.
This was so good, that if AGDQ had ended with it I would be satisfied :3
This was one of my favorite runs of the marathon. More of this, more games, more run categories being raced. Please and thank you!
Thank you for including the interview in the beginning! It was great getting the players perspectives about the race.
if you liked that, there's an interview about this DKC race in front of the Grand Thef Auto run
Complete video, amazing runners
I didn't know James Chen was into speedruns! Cool.
2:46:08
i love the simultaneous hands to mouth.
1:34:00 is that the Mang0 I think it is?
Wow we got Mang0 and SilentWolf! 😂
Melee
Holy shit! The Melee, tech skill master himself! Silentwolf!
pkfirst Featuring a better late than never $100 donation from mang0.
No cussing in the comments. This is gdq.
Props to Suzuri for making up ground after being thrown under the bus by Vooid.
Vooid throws everyone under the bus lmao. Guys a major douche
Poor Donkey Kong. The trilogy is named after him yet he isn't even playable in 2 of the 3 games.
According to the speedrunners he isn't playable in the first game either
@@KMoonshield lol i was gonna say hes barely used in 1

great job by the commentary
thank you and you're welcome
antilles58 Sir you fucking destroy as a commentator. Congratulations. What about run a romhack like Hard as Kongcrete next marathon?
thanks! high praise, indeed! glad you enjoyed :)
A ROM hack like that would be awesome to see, for sure! Right now I'm not aware of anybody running one though, so not sure who could submit it. Maybe there's an opportunity for you to do it!
Just wanted to echo that. They were professional, self-effacing, and still finding interesting stuff to say after 2 hours. Great job guys!
antilles58 Acctualy I'm struggling to beat it normally. But someday who knows. Still a recommendation :)
those relays are so sweet
Absolutely amazing! Well done Waffles 👏👏👏
Dear GDQ, I watch this often as a way to put my brain to bed so I can sleep. Please make this a fairly often occurrence. I wanna watch more.
Same here, it’s so soothing to watch and listen to these videos!
Silent Wolf got that tech in Melee and DKC
I like how accurate sonic shoes and an earth worm Jim gun near the trash has become
Try to find on google easter egg in Earthworm Jim with Donkey head

amazing race

"I love this song. It reminds me of my childhood."
Funny, it gives me anxiety from how many times I died in Bramble Blast.
I want to see commentary like this for Tomba 2 this summer
1:03:10
"Rambi's control is terrible in this game. He controls like a rhinoceros."
That's because Rambi IS A rhinoceros!!
Every stage in this is "the most difficult stage in the game."

Dude... Waffle's Briar level at the end of DKC2 was nuts!!!
I am so happy there is another human being on this planet whose favorite anime is Hikaru no Go. Heck yes. Will stan.
Is that James Chen reading the donation comments?
That was awesome !

Please we need a Inverted order Dk Country Relay in the next GDQ. 3, 2, 1. For me, this is one of the best speedrun of the event history
So this is where SilentWolf went after evo 2014
3 Games
6 Deaths
9 Players
What's with all the screen flashes in every video uploaded
Team Rootbeer!
I love rootbeer but, hate to brake it to you but, um...That most likely will never be a team.
I'm only here bc I love Otto. Who is silent wolf btw. And the mango donation
That seemed super fast for all 3 games
2:03:57
*SUPREME KILLED AN ANIMAL!!* It's not 'Save the Animals' anymore!!
No 1 knew the dk cartoon song from back in the day(donation) :(
I'm new to this; can somebody explain to me what the "kill/save the animals" thing is all about?
The goal is to raise more money by having donors choose whether or not they want the animals at the end of super metroid to be killed. It is sort of a side quest.
Metroid runs. You can save animals at the end which costs time, or kill the animals.
Michael Kanis Thanks, I figured it was a donation incentive of some sort, just had no idea what for. Cheers, and thanks for the run, too.

Silent Wolf
gave a hesitation, he was very ahead and ended up getting lost, got the psychologist really shaken and a pity
1:01:24 What are they saying? What is that trick called where Diddy flies through the level?
It's called a jumproll. Basically, just press Y on a frame where you're falling on an enemy yet still on the ground (ie, the game still lets you roll, but you're starting to bounce off of an enemy).

why is it not called a DKC triathlon?
Triathlon would be more like each player doing all 3 games - relay is when you have a team and everybody does a different leg of the race.
