One of the better instructional presenters on YT. I play 1- 2 hours every evening for health and recreation. It just makes me feel more alert and aware.Thank you for simple and well focused lessons !

I agree this is one of the most important "pool fundamental."

Awesome I will be checking them out. Have been practicing since my first comment and can do it with some reasonable consistency now!!
2 months after watching your analyzes and playing 4-5 hours in week improved my playing level really good. In bar no one wants to play with me anymore. I'm mostly able to clean 7ft table on first turn in 8 ball. You made clear all of my questions in physics. I have 10mm snooker cue and filled pinpon balls with melted candle now practicing with that at home for my stroke. Thank you.
Thanks for the comment. I’m glad to here my stuff has helped you.
I hadn't noticed that before. Thank you for pointing it out. Unfortunately, I can't fix it.
nice shooting
I'm glad it helped and I hope it reduces potential embarrassment in the future.
Possible causes:
- tip not holding chalk well
- tightening grip during the stroke
- aiming too low on the ball

This is the most helpful video I've seen on this technique. I'm the type of person that needs to understand the logic of how something works to learn it, and this breakdown was great for that. The things that really got me to learn it was using a striped ball to learn where to hit, and dropping back on the cue for a consistent stroke. Really well explained, left a like
Thanks for the comments. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
in just one video about backspin i found cue action fundamentals andf great examples, thank you.

thanks for the video, great advices. still working on my game.
This is usually caused by dropping the elbow during the stroke into the ball.

this really helped thanks

FYI, lot's of useful advice can be found in the FAQ section of my website (see the link in the video description above) under "draw shot - technique."
But the only way to get more draw is to hit the CB lower and with more cue speed.
Good luck.

Good info.
Seems like where I go for pool, every 2 minutes somebody else's cue ball is hit from their table and rolling on the floor in search of somebody with a catcher's mitt.
nice. thx! i'll keep working on it.
This can be caused by:
- tip not properly chalked
- aiming too low on the cue ball
- moving your elbow up during the stroke
- tightening the grip during the stroke.

The non-slick cloth can definitely make draw more difficult, but I suspect the problem is more with your technique than with the cloth. To get more draw, it is simple ... you need to hit the cue ball lower (to get more backspin) and with more speed (so less backspin is lost on the way to the object ball. FYI, more advice can be found in the FAQ section of my website (see the link in the video description above).
Good info thanks
good technique
This helped a lot, I can draw pretty decent but then sometimes I would hop it and I could never figure out why. Turns out I was tightening my grip right before striking the ball, mainly on draw shots that needed more power. Ever since I tried keeping my arm relaxed through the whole shot I've been way more consistent, and not on draws alone. Thanks for the advice!
I'm glad to hear it. FYI, if you want more useful draw shot technique advice, see:

@@DrDaveBilliards Thanks!
I play french billiard but this video really helpful. Thank you!
I'm glad to hear it. You're welcome!
A hard tip is a problem only if it is not holding chalk properly.
Draw can certainly be as easy (or difficult) with a hard tip as it is with a soft tip.
@djerez8
I think Bob's cue is a Balabushka. Regardless, a good draw stroke results from good technique, not a fancy cue.

Agreed!

Thanks for the comment. Please help spread the word about my vids and instructional products.
Thank you very much @DrDaveBilliards. This helps me to pot 2 balls at once.
it could also be caused that you are playing on a tabel that requiers a bigger cueball then the other balls. I have a bar in my city that has that kind of table. You have to hit it lower and really accurate and really hard(unless the object ball is close) to perform a good draw shot.
You're welcome. FYI, I just posted a bunch more stuff about a week ago. Check it out.
Thanks. I hope you like and benefit from the instruction also.
This is usually caused by tightening the grip during the stroke, which lowers the tip.
@florent2911
The most common problem is dropping the elbow, which makes you hit the CB higher than you think. Keep the grip relaxed, keep the elbow still, and accelerate into the ball.
FYI, I have lots of good advice and resources to help with the draw stroke on the FAQ page of my website. Check it out.
I'm still a novice player and I go to the pool hall by myself all the time to practice and I have played with the draw shot and have so much trouble with it I keep jumping the cue ball but this video has helped but the cue ball only draws back about and inch or two
Bob's cue is a Balabushka. I'm not sure where he got it, but I'll ask.
Wow such a great lesson bgnrs like me

This is great information. I've been struggling putting draw on the ball. I think I'm bridging to close to the ball and angling my shaft too much. I don't suppose you know anyone in utah that would teach lessons. Videos are great but if you're doing something wrong there is no one to tell you. Pool sucks here pretty much just little bar tournaments with 3 tables.

Through watching many "Draw" videos, they all claimed one should have a short stroking distance, 6 ~ 8 inches maximum. Of course none of their draw shots showed the Q Ball drawing very far. Their limitations were all about 1/2 as far as my abilities when I am doing a mild draw attempt. Normally I draw a full table length, but my power draw shots (when I am "on" is much longer. It is my power draw shots I am looking to improve and so I am seeking to discover what I am doing wrong. Years ago I could draw the Q~Ball nearly twice the length of the pool table, but I lost some ability there over the years and wanted to get that ability back.
Mike Massey showed his power draw and I noticed he lengthened his bridge to 10 - 12" and this is the first video agreeing with Mike Massey. Mike showed his power draw with his lengthened bridge and it worked, of course.
Top
that or a joss im pretty sure that's a joss because balaabushkas has usually some form of green wrap wether its green with white but its allways green
For draw: loose grip --> meaning not a death grip. Don't try a loose grip because you'll be thinking about your freekin hand the hole time. Thats the last place where you want your concentration. Stay relaxed and hit the piss out of it. If your going to lengthen your bridge so that you'll have more time to accelerate don't over exaggerate it; if your stroke feels awkward it probably is. FYI the Kamui black tips are awesome but go for the medium because the soft just doesn't keep its shape

There is a video to learn how to jump the cue ball???
do you have any videos on any hook follow shots?
was told something that I didn't know , must shoot thru the ball to get draw . if you don't continue the stroke , draw won't take . your videos are extremely informative . like to play you sometime , but it doesn't look like I'd have a turn on the table :(
Accelerating into and through the ball is definitely an important ingredient of good draw. For others, see:
billiards.colostate.edu/faq/draw/advice-and-drills/
You can go as low as possible without miscue for the best draw action. Just make sure your cue is absolutely LEVEL during the stroke, accelerate smoothly, and follow through, ending the stroke with the cue tip resting forward on the table.
Thanks. Please help spread the word about my vids and instructional products.
Very well made and very informative. Would the size of the cue ball make a huge difference? The table I have access to has similarly sized cues, but the balls are much smaller
I think the advice is the same for all ball sizes; although, if the tip is too large with a small ball, you won't be able to get low enough. FYI, many more videos and info on this topic can be found here:
billiards.colostate.edu/faq/draw/advice-and-drills/
i have a hard tip on my cue stick, and i've been playing pool for years, doing a draw shot is hard with a hard tip, that could be a problem too. so I'd reccomend having a soft tip to do draw shots
6:08 probably the biggest thing people get wrong on draw shots. Follow-through alone will improve your consistency and accuracy more than anything.
A relaxed grip is also very important. But I agree that accelerating into and through the cue ball is critical.
Yeah to clarify, I think everything you mention is important. Your advice is dead on. Thanks for the video.
DrDaveBilliards I own a pool table that has a thicker felt that is not a pool table felt, is it still possible to do this shot?

1) Check your contact point on the cue ball. Substitute a striped ball for the cue ball, as shown at 1:05. Look at the chalk mark on the ball after you shoot. Is it where you thought you hit the ball, or is it higher?
2) Verify that your tip is in good condition, roughed up, and well chalked.
3) Proper acceleration is crucial for draw. Here is an exercise for you to try. Spend 5 minutes a day for the next 2 weeks doing the following:
