@theayatoll in billiards, we call that 'cue ball control'. An amateur player shoots just to make a shot and hopes they make it, but a great player sees 4 or more shots ahead and uses cue ball control to get the cue ball exactly where he wants for those shots. I’ve found that the Frozen Rail Cut Shot is also be possible for an OB that’s around 3-4mm off the cushion by using inside-draw in equal measure (45° low-left/right). The draw slows down the rebound off of the cushion enough to make good contact. At least, that’s my interpretation of the physics. It’s one of my favourite shots as most people think it’s an impossible cut. It is a hero or zero shot though, especially with swerve over a long distance…

I play on English tables all the time ,a lot of these shots wouldn't work because the pockets are far tighter. The center pockets on American tables are over an inch and a half bigger and the other pockets are over an inch bigger and the balls are only quarter of an inch bigger. I've played on American tables and they are a lot easier to pot a ball on.
Great video guys! Here’s a tough question…I’ve been away from pool since early 2000’s looking to get a new low deflection cue. What brand would you guys recommend for around the $400 to $500 price range? Thanks

#6 in my league, this guy I was playing was all excited because he had left the 8 ball on the rail and left the cue ball up table and was going on about how the bank was impossible. I just told him I would cut the ball in, his jaw dropped when I sank it 😂😂
I just did this in a tourney yesterday with the 8 ball less than 90° frozen to the rail and the cueball about 2" from the head rail near the corner pocket!! Sank it beautifully, But then sadly scratched in the corner pocket where the cue ball was near. 😥 everyone was hooping and hollering and then groaning when the CB scratched. Twas one hell of a shot! And I thank you Dr. Dave and your videos for teaching me so much! As one of the very few female shooters around here, it's a great feeling to hold your own, keep them in their toes, and give them a challenge!
@@DrDaveBilliards one of them shots you played where the 8 ball is on the cushion in the middle of th table and you use right hand side to pot it, is sublime. I love seeing these kind of impossible shots you'd never even think of attempting. I'm generally a newbie to American Pool so learning all the time, but only due to the likes of you Dr Dave 👏

The question I have is: Placing the cue ball against the #13 ball as my understanding is that it may even be a foul due to making contact with another (object) ball during the foul set up?
This is a proposition shot, not a match situation. That's why I didn't say you have "ball in hand." I instead said you "can put the CB anywhere you want."
suggestion for the final shot of frozen balls. you should be able to put CB in the kitchen (if playing one pocket) 1 diamond from the side rail and aim at the 11 as if the 13 isn't there with medium-medium full power the 11 should go 2 rails into the corner :) always enjoy the videos!!
Nice video, DrDave. I jus want to know a few things. At 9:36, this may not be likely to happen, but if there was external influence on the game-winning shot, like Demetrius catching the ball mid-air, mid-shot, what will the verdict of the shot be? Also, at 13:12, if this comes up in a game situation, however unlikely, under all balls / all fouls category, how do you think it's possible to freeze the cue ball to the 13 like that and to avoid the foul at the same time? Thanks
At 9:36, if the shooter interfered with the CB (e.g., by catching it) before the shot is over (i.e., before all balls come to rest), then it would be a foul and loss of game (if playing 8-ball). At 13:12, I was clear in saying "you can put the CB anywhere" as part of the proposition. In an actual game situation, you are not allowed to touch an OB with the CB with "ball in hand." That would be a foul.
@@DrDaveBilliards I'd like to add this 13:12 shot to my game-winning arsenal. So, what if you have the opponent or referee watch you place the cueball and you successfully leave a hair- or paper-thin space? Does being frozen make a difference vs. such a gap? It seems like the space could cause as little error as striking a frozen cueball very slightly off-center.
@@raygrinders3918 Being frozen is totally different than having a tiny gap, in which case a double-hit foul would be unavoidable. For more info, see: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/foul/double-hit/
I use the classic "Avery" brand. I don't have a problem with them wearing out quickly; but even when they wear out, they still continue to do their job OK (especially if you tap a ball on the cloth in the center of the donut to help a placed ball settle).
It is halfway the distance along the perpendicular to the target from the line through the balls. See the videos here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/frozen/aiming/
regarding the 8 ball and the striped ball married on the cushion, this might be a stupid question but if you are shooting solids and sink the stripe before the 8 ball, is that not a foul?
Yeah, I practice the beyond 90 frozen shot every now and again, and it is less difficult than one would think, at least if you practice it every now and again. And when the cue to object ball distance is much shorter it is that much easier. At some positions you really have to watch for the scratch, though, so it's good to know those. Great shots, I didn't know a few of these.
i'm so confused. are you saying that you should try those shots around the 6 minute mark vs some sort of safety? i'm trying to learn. what's a midgamer supposed to do with the scenario at 6:15?
FYI, this situation is covered in detail in this video: ua-cam.com/video/HXX-0HfiJKE/v-deo.html The best choice depends on the player and the opponent. The only way to find your answer is through practicing all the options.
I bought a Poison cue 150 euros. Beautiful thing but has a 13 mm tip and I used to playing 11mm. Im shocked at how ridiculous the spins are to make because sometimes hitting it hard it will not draw at all... Made the tip more round and works just a bit more but I think pros play with smaller tip and plays way better isnt it?
Because the CB is frozen, and because the tip is softer than the balls, the cue tip continues to impart force to the CB after the OB moves, sending the CB forward.
Absolutely love your videos and analysis Dr Dave, unusual question but have you ever played or taken an interest in English 8 ball pool? Or reds and yellows pool, black ball rules? I would be very interested to see what shots you would come up with using that ruleset on the kind of tables I play on, of course I’m sure you’d still demolish me 😂
I've played only a couple of times when I visited England about 20 years ago. Many 8-ball shots I show in my videos also apply to English 8-ball. Certainly, all principles like CB control and pattern play apply equally. What rule differences do you think would create opportunities for radically different shot choices?
@@DrDaveBilliards combination shots for the 8 ball which are legal as long as both balls are potted , irrespective of the order they drop, or the total snooker rule where if you are completely snookered from hitting an object ball of your set you don’t have to hit a rail after contact, or even the 2 shot rule on a foul, where by if your opponent fouls you have a free shot where you can hit any ball including the 8 or pocket an opponents ball, then you have your visit as normal, I’ve played for 5 years and know there’s some different shot types you can use with these rules but I was curious with your imagination what you could cook up 😊
@@jackmurray3885 I'll add it to my list; but my list is very long, and somebody who actually plays the game could probably do a much better job than me.
I keep trying the #10 shot and can't seem to make it. they are touching and im using inside spin but that opponent's ball always goes in while the black basically stays still. any suggestions to improve my attempts?
This shot requires a perfect hit. You need to hit the 8 and cushion at very close to the exact same time. For more info, see the dedicated "What Would You Do Here?" video series in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLH9d4KFY28XseXlEzFOvomJvaX3uIx5sG.html Good luck!
That was excellent! My takeaway: When in doubt, use low inside English! Or, was it, when in doubt, hit the rail, first! Or, was it . . . In any event, thank you!
This video has tons of great "takeaways." It is probably best to practice and learn about each separately instead of trying to summarize all shots in the entire video (which are varied), which is not possible.
Excellent list DrDave! I employ the 7:38 one quite a lot and people think it's some sort of magic :) I'll give some of the other ones a go too! Thanks!

Couldn't you freeze the cue to the side of the 11 and use " cling" effect to drag the 11 away from the 13 towards the pocket with a slow smooth stroke leaving the 13 untouched?....then you can control the ending position of all 3 ball more predictably?
I was referring to the proposition shot but after looking at it...I couldn't set the cue in the correct position to use cling which if I'm not mistaken. the 13 interferes with where I believe i have to. regardless ....I I had this occur in a gane of 9 ball...replacing the 11 with the 8 ball and 13 with the 9 ball...with ball in hand... nit the same shot since I have to hitthe 8 ball 1at .. which in the video would be the 11.... after the game.. For the last shot, probably not as reliable, but theoretically you could do a number of things to try and force a massive skid that could straighten the OB into the pocket
I actually started recording a follow-up video for this shot, where I will show numerous alternatives (including several involving cling/skid/kick). Stay tuned.
When my friend and I were playing a game of 8 ball the other day I hit the 8 ball in cleanly. I said before the shot that I would try to hit it off another ball but I also made it clear that it didn't matter as long as I called the correct pocket. I was just so used to calling shots clean or not that I said it. I pocketed it cleanly instead. He tried to say I lost because of my verbalization of calling possibly off another ball (guess he misheard my comment about it not mattering). Well we looked it up and it said you cannot carom the 8 ball off another ball to win the game like in 2:52 and it must go in cleanly. I am not sure if everyone has this rule but that is what comes up when you search so I thought I would mention it since it appears to be unclear and I see it done in many instruction videos.
@@CosplayZine You must have looked at an old or non-standard set of rules. See the videos, info, and links here: billiards.colostate.edu/resources/rules/ Under the “official rules of pool,” you need only call the pocket. How the ball goes in doesn’t matter.
The 13 ball and 8 ball short rail shots in the corner pocket will be a lot more difficult on a Diamond table. Great shots to have in your toolbox because they come up all the time.

13:30 I know it's legal to hit a frozen ball but are you sure it's legal to place your ball in hand frozen to another ball? I know in snooker re-spotted balls are not allowed to touch other balls in the table.
With "ball in hand," you are not allowed to touch another ball. That's why this is a "proposition shot" (with careful wording) and not a real game situation.

Great video guys! Here’s a tough question…I’ve been away from pool since early 2000’s looking to get a new low deflection cue. What brand would you guys recommend for around the $400 to $500 price range? Thanks
Sorry, but I don’t have much knowledge of cue pricing, but performance info for all the LD shafts I have tested can be found here:
billiards.colostate.edu/faq/squirt/published-data/
and here:
billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue/carbon/
And good general advice for selecting a cue can be found here:
billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue/selecting/
#6 in my league, this guy I was playing was all excited because he had left the 8 ball on the rail and left the cue ball up table and was going on about how the bank was impossible. I just told him I would cut the ball in, his jaw dropped when I sank it 😂😂
I've done it in league also with a really steep cut, but never with a back cut like I demonstrated at 6:26.
Thank you Dr Dave and Demetrious some great shots to learn there 👍

@@DrDaveBilliards one of them shots you played where the 8 ball is on the cushion in the middle of th table and you use right hand side to pot it, is sublime. I love seeing these kind of impossible shots you'd never even think of attempting.

6:30 : Trouble is that I used to make these as a child , but stopped practicing these and now I need to practice, which I will .. so much practice needed .. so many scenarios, gotta clean the pool table for the finale, my finale, maybe I win few local tournaments this way ..
The question I have is:
Placing the cue ball against the #13 ball as my understanding is that it may even be a foul due to making contact with another (object) ball during the foul set up?
This is a proposition shot, not a match situation. That's why I didn't say you have "ball in hand." I instead said you "can put the CB anywhere you want."
Fantastic techniques and videos!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
suggestion for the final shot of frozen balls. you should be able to put CB in the kitchen (if playing one pocket) 1 diamond from the side rail and aim at the 11 as if the 13 isn't there with medium-medium full power the 11 should go 2 rails into the corner :)
always enjoy the videos!!
Agreed, but the "proposition" is to go straight to the corner.
Thank you, Dave. Very helpful.
You're welcome. I'm glad you liked it.
@@DrDaveBilliards I see, thanks so much, and great video, DrDave
@@stronbium You're welcome, and thank you. I aim to swerve. :)
For more info, see:

What brand are the spots you use for object ball positioning? I haven't found a good brand that lasts very long.
I use the classic "Avery" brand. I don't have a problem with them wearing out quickly; but even when they wear out, they still continue to do their job OK (especially if you tap a ball on the cloth in the center of the donut to help a placed ball settle).
Thanks DrDave!
Does number 4 (twice as full) work for the APA pool format?
I don't know of any APA rule that prohibits this.

That’s a little weird.

Thanks! Rock on.
For the twice-as-full aiming system, is it halfway angle or halfway distance?
It is halfway the distance along the perpendicular to the target from the line through the balls. See the videos here:

[12:01] time. U are allowed 2 hit the 8-ball and the opponent ball and make them go in? I'm confused?
Under official/standard WPA 8-ball rules, you just need to call pocket for the 8 and hit the 8 with the CB first. Anything else goes.
@@DrDaveBilliards oh ok, thanks!
In the proposition shot example. I understand about pushing through a frozen ball but wouldn't it be illegal to freeze the cue to an object ball

regarding the 8 ball and the striped ball married on the cushion, this might be a stupid question but if you are shooting solids and sink the stripe before the 8 ball, is that not a foul?

@@DrDaveBilliards thank you so much for your replying to me and for helping me understand this scenario. it's greatly appreciated!
You're welcome. I aim to swerve. :)
I'm glad you learned a few things.
i'm so confused. are you saying that you should try those shots around the 6 minute mark vs some sort of safety? i'm trying to learn. what's a midgamer supposed to do with the scenario at 6:15?
FYI, this situation is covered in detail in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/HXX-0HfiJKE/v-deo.html
The best choice depends on the player and the opponent. The only way to find your answer is through practicing all the options.
You should also practice the cushion-first running spin shot because in some game situations it is the only option.

See the video and info here:
billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue-tip/size-and-shape/
Hi can u discuss which cue to purchase for amateurs?
It really doesn't matter much, but I do have some good general advice here:
billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue/selecting/
If the ball is froze on shot #4 how does it not travel the tangent line when striking center ball? Looks as though it has to hit the short rail??

I'm glad to hear it. And I'm glad you mentioned "practice." Videos alone can't create improvement.
This video wasn't designed to be a "watch once and learn one thing" clip. Instead, it is a resource with lots of useful lessons to learn over time.

Couldn't you freeze the cue to the side of the 11 and use " cling" effect to drag the 11 away from the 13 towards the pocket with a slow smooth stroke leaving the 13 untouched?....then you can control the ending position of all 3 ball more predictably?
Please give me a shot # or MM:SS time stamp so I will know how to respond. Thanks.
I found that banking that 11 using English becausei cannot cut the ball with out 1st hittig the 13⁶

See the videos, info, and links here:
billiards.colostate.edu/resources/rules/
Under the “official rules of pool,” you need only call the pocket. How the ball goes in doesn’t matter.
The 13 ball and 8 ball short rail shots in the corner pocket will be a lot more difficult on a Diamond table. Great shots to have in your toolbox because they come up all the time.
All shots are tougher on a table with "tight" pockets. I'm glad you liked the shots.
@@DrDaveBilliards Not if you hit the back of the pocket!
