Ah, superb, been waiting for this one. I've been slowly getting the hang of using side more and more, but still a long way off being good with it. Not enough good, clear videos that get into the nitty gritty of aiming with side. This is gold dust for anyone learning snooker or other cue sports.
Yes, playing with side is one of those things that you just have to "do", to get used to. Unless you're a consistent Potter, it's part of the game that remains out of reach for many.
As he alluded to, different cues will throw the ball different amounts. Even the type of ferrule makes a noticeable difference. The old school brass ferrules throw the ball the most. The same cue with a fibre ferrule will throw the ball less with perhaps less spin potential. I have experimented with both.
Yeah playing with side is no joke, probably the hardest thing to do in snooker. Timing and power obviously change the measure of cue ball deflection, and then different again depending on distance between cue ball and object ball. Only way to get better at it is by putting time in on the table, alot of time. Brass ferrules make it harder but there's alot of people are starting to use titanium ferrules because there's much less deflection, but either way it takes months, years to get comfortable with side on a cue ball.
Being a Canadian resident, I wasn't exposed to the culture and missed a lot of historic matches of snooker. I have seen Cliff Thorburn's 147 , the first at the crucible theater. I'll be proud of that for many years. I started watching snooker when TSN (the sporst nerwork) had their pub night. My neighbor had TSN and enjoyed watching. He soon found out that I also enjoyed snooker, so Wade would record it ( pub night was a middle of the night program) . He would watch it, then bring the tape over so I could watch. Stephen, you were on top of the world. I enjoy the show. Thanks for the memories. Roland
This is the ultimate 'giving back to the fans'. It would be easy to disappear into the ether but he's here taking time to educate his longtime supporters - so good mate. By the way - anyone reading this who has played against me on league night and commented on the sound of my cue....I just want to say - 'my cue sounds just like Hendry's, I'm not changing my tip...' ;)
Been playing for 30 years, and I am so grateful that your career was in my lifetime. Thanks for doing these. As odd as it might sound, it feels like just hanging out with an old friend.
I've learnt more about snooker in seven minutes than I have in years of playing (nonchalantly mind you!). I only even learned to reposition my strike vertically to a noticeable effect. I realise now when I have tried playing side I was playing it extremely! Its also important to realise the difference between left/right side -I thought it widened the natural angle left or right, rather than check side killing the spin. Be great to see how stun shots and screw differ, I seem to do it by accident each way.
American pool player here, side has helped my game tremendously. Like Judd says, it’s rare in snooker to play a shot plain ball, and I think that transitions over to pool for the most part. Rail shots become way easier using side, and getting position is way easier. Stephen’s videos really helpful.
Oh American pool? Why don't you make those pockets a little bigger too Homie? Plastic buckets are much cheaper than professionally crafted steel block cushions 😂
Thank you sir for sharing. You were the first ever player I watched on TV when I started following snooker. I loved you then and I love you now. You are the GOAT for me. 🙏
i only took up snooker a few weeks ago (watched it since the 80s but never played) and this advice is gold ....i just thought left or right spin sent the ball opposite ways AND HAD NO IDEA TO AIM SLIGHTLY THE OPPOSITE WAY TO COMPENSATE ,these little hacks are fantastic and superbly presented by the GOAT
Look at old footage of you ,your stance behind the cue ball has never changed before you go down to shoot the cue ball ,an amazing Champion you have been ,thankyou
Just recently found an untapped passion of mine for “pool” in the US . I play 8 ball and 9 ball . Far from good but it’s my dream to become one of the best players in the world . Your videos are unbelievably helpful .
Dear Sir Hendry, I was a huge Jimmy White fan in the 90s so it"s fair to say you caused me a lot of grief back then. But thanks to this brilliant channel I can finally forgive you! Thank you.
Stephen Hendry - I haven't seen you ( not IRL ! ) since I left the UK thirty odd years ago! I haven't had a frame of snooker since then either. I used to love it back then and you were one of the young, rising stars. Great that you are using the medium of the internet (which probably didn't exist in 'the late eighties, or was at best, in its infancy) to teach others . Well done Stephen - great ambassadorship and great tips - wish I'd had them back then - I would have been a much better player! Cheers.
Stephen was my favourite player growing up in the 80's-90's, he always explained the sport to the point and concisely. Loved watching him play as a kid
These Cue tip videos have definitely helped improve my pool game. Just wanted to say thank you for making them, Stephen "The King of the Crucible" Hendry. You god damn legend!!
Excellent. Using side has always been the bane of my playing. Not knowing where to aim or when to use left or right in a particular shot. This was beautifully done and VERY helpful. Becoming a master of using side is what separates the punters from the ones who can run tables. Thanks so much for this.
You must check out Steve Bartons chanell. This was excellent, but ther's a lot more to side. You need to practise different speed and distance, and different amount of side for hours and hours to get your aiming right. More power equals more deflection to allow for...
Brilliant video, Stephen. I remember reading a snooker book in the mid-late 90's when you were in your pomp, and side was detailed in it. The way I remember it is: When you're playing RUN side, you hit the object ball slightly THICKER than normal. When you're playing CHECK side, you hit the object ball slightly THINNER than normal. Run = Thicker Check = Thinner
This reminds me of the late great Shane warne giving bowling tips on sky... Stephen like shane was a genius... but also with excellent fundelmentals so he can teach....pure gold for everyone
This was randomly recommended to me by UA-cam. In Mexico we don't have snooker. But this guy playing in his spare bedroom seems really good. He'd do well in pool over here for sure. Could make a name for himself.
This is absolutely great. Having played just a little Danish billiard, and havingg wondered about the exact dynamics, finally to see some nuances! Thanks!
“I don’t understand geometry” says one of the greatest users of geometry who made a career from using/understanding it on the green baize. Stephen is responsible for the exciting way the game is played now, aggressively splitting the pack at the first opportunity, then his break building was awesome to watch. Steve David took the game from the smokey snooker halls onto our screens with Barry Hearn’s assistance, then Hendry took over and dominated for years, untouchable when on form, probably the only player O’Sullivan feared. I know people say Ronnie is the best player ever to pick up a snooker cue, but for me Hendry was the true genius, and I never really appreciated him until he won his 7th world title beating Davis. As a Steve Davi’s fan I wanted his 6 times winning record to stay but I had to concede when Hendry got number 7. Great to watch another side to Hendry here, no one better to learn from 👏👏👏
Having a long break from snooker *pun intended* these videos helping me a lot regaining my old technique which worked for me and is stilkl the same now thanks!
always and for ever my favorite player ,the man who change the snooker style that we watch today , attacking game and if possible win the frame in one visit !!!
Some constructive criticism: I think a lot of people already use side and know how it affects cue ball control. It's also common knowledge that the object ball may be affected by the side and go slightly off line, which you have to adjust for. I'm curious to hear from someone as skilled in the game as Stephen Hendry how professionals adjust for the more complicated aiming even over long shots. What type of practice gets you to professional level and how do they get so consistent. Like do you deliberately practice various side spin shots over different angles, speed and length of the shots. Is it something you just have a natural feel for? Did Stephen have difficulties with this part of the game at some point. I think this would be really interesting for the viewers of the channel to here, would be a true master class in snooker. :) Anyway, thank you for putting out so much high quality content, the channel is delightful.
Stephen think this might be the first tutorial inclusive of Running side / Check Side in a Cuesport 👌 Tis an art of Physics within The Intricate game of Snooker Thanks for your Professional explanation, I've been playing snooker for 40+ years and can do Reverse/Check but loved that play object ball to off centre of pocket to grab more spin 👌
Hendry is my favourite snooker player of all time, it's amazing to directly learn from him, I have always struggled with check and running sides, will put this into use now 😀 many thanks
I appreciate that he straight up said he can't explain where to aim when hitting the cue ball off centre because everyone is different and depends on the cue as well. That makes me want to practice and find out as opposed to someone telling me where to aim then losing hope when it goes wrong. That small bit of info helps a ton.
These videos are brilliant. This is certainly the next step in my game to making 30-40 breaks into 50-60 breaks. Also great to see Steven with is personality on show. His interviews with the other players are really enjoyable and honest.
I remember trying this at local snooker hall, after seeing it on tv, when I was about 15 and well, it didn’t go well. Even though I was absolutely rubbish at playing Snooker, I always loved it. I was much better at pool and still loved snooker more. Probably because watching people like Stephen Hendry, Ronnie OSulivan, Steve Davies, etc. watching the live games was a real buzz and still is to this day. I’ll never forgot going to my local snooker hall, 3 times a week, all those years ago. I’ve not played in 20 years but still watch on tv. Who wants to buy me a new house, big enough for a 12ft Snooker Table? You buy the house and I’ll buy the table? 😂
Not only has my snooker game improved watching these videos but my pool too, just having such knowledge has really enhanced how I play the game. Cheers Stephen!
Hey Steve it's been an honor a treat for people who love your game and your style of play back in Pakistan..you are a hero of many and inspiration for sub continent region especially Pakistan..just keep helping us out with your great advice ❤️
Stephen great video but I have a question about something you didn't address in the video: how do you line up your cue for a side spin shot? Do you line up as if you are playing the short plain ball then move the back of the cue so as to strike the cue ball to the side or do you cue parallel to the plain ball shot by moving the whole cue to the side as has been taught in other videos I have seen. I have always used the first method with mixed results so maybe the parallel method is the correct way. I hope I have described the alternatives so you get what I'm asking.
Parallel cueing when using side is the way to do it. Play the shot, see which side of the pocket you missed and by how much, adjust your aiming point on the object ball accordingly, play again until you get good results. Distance from the object ball, the lay of the nap and the power of the shot all have a bearing so keep this in mind and learn by how much and to which side of the pocket you miss. The shots Stephen played were hit quite hard so all he was allowing for was the deflection of the cue ball, but when a sidespin shot is hit slower, then the swerve of the cue ball on the cloth must also be allowed for and this also changes if the cue ball is spinning with, against or along the lay of the nap which as we all know lays as the table is brushed from baulk to top of the table. The cue ball will swerve more when it's spinning in the same direction as the lay of the nap across the table (aim just in front of near jaw), less when spinning against the lay of the nap across the table (aim near jaw) and kind of inbetween the two when spinning along it, ie down the table from baulk to top and will actually swerve the other way as it slows down when playing from top to baulk. As you can see using side seems to be a minefield but you learn by trial and error, see where you miss and adjust accordingly and eventually you will get there. Don't take into account any videos about sidespin demonstrated with pool on a napless cloth, snooker on a napped cloth is very different because of the nap and the way the cue ball behaves as it spins with, against or along the nap.
I’ve watched quite a few videos on playing with side and thought it gave me a good understanding however with unsuccessful results. Now after having it explained to me in this way it makes so much more sense. Thanks Stephen for helping me to elevate my cue game.
I never thought that Steven hendry would be showing us all how it's done, a former seven-time world champion, the consistency, discipline, and one of the best temperaments the game has ever seen. Thank you for the pointers steve
it's quite humbling to think that someone who, tbh, has absolutely no need to waste his time on us mere mortals, is happy to spend his time giving so much back to the sport. Many many thanks for being such a nice bloke Stephen.
Its great to see hendry like this . One of the best players ever showing you how its done.. however there is no way to "aim" with side on the ball. Better to be honest about it. The reason snooker is hard is that to get s break of any meaning you need cue ball control and that cant be done by "aiming". It can only be done by feel.. you cant teach feel, you cant even demonstrate it. You must practice it and get the feel for yourself. So how do you "aim" with side ? Simple. Play a shot with side spin 1000 times..then another, then another, then another, then another. Anyone looking for a simple rule if thumb, is sadly in for a shock. Practice is the only way to play with side and even if you are a master, aiming is not the right word. More like feeling , guessing, playing if you like.
I've never really played snooker but I've been watching it since Pot Black days (sometimes on a black-and-white television!) and your videos are extremely informative about what's involved in playing a shot. I knew that side affected the angle the cue ball bounced off at, but I never knew you also had to change the aim on the object ball. The more you know!
A significant department of the game whereby few online schools/tutors cover & nor teach. We're treated to a 7 time World Champ here conveying his masterful, 'side spin' techniques into one's game, inspiring nothing but confidence for all ages. Highest respects for doing this btw @Steven Hendry.. you Legend.
After watching Reyes & others pull off full table swerves I had to try it with only a slight raise of the butt I amazed myself with making the shot! Now I really look forward to getting blocked. I don't always make it but it's a blast attempting it.. kick shots are fun too but it's nice having another option! Great video!
Never in my life I believed that the great Steven Hendry might give pointers to people like me. Thank you so much, love the series!
Its pretty insane isn't it !

Parallel cueing when using side is the way to do it.
I was waiting for right coach and I got Steven hendry thank you so much ❤

Now you talking of a good teacher👍👍🇸🇪
Cue cam is sick. We need this on the tele.
I’ve watched quite a few videos on playing with side and thought it gave me a good understanding however with unsuccessful results. Now after having it explained to me in this way it makes so much more sense. Thanks Stephen for helping me to elevate my cue game.
Always wondered about that. Now I know. Thanks Stephen.
So awesome! I needed this about 30 years ago!
Was never a huge fan of the player. Big fan now great channel. Thanks Stephen
Subscribed, You and this channel will benefit generations. Thank you
Simple and clear tuition, well done Stephen.
@StephenHendrysCueTips.. SCAMMER AT LARGE
Very well explained and demonstrated. Excellent.
Steven hendry = legend thanks for this channel great advice
What a pleasure to watch a master at work.
This channel as reignited my interest in snooker! Brilliant.
I almost feel unworthy listening to these hints - but very gratefully and sincerely appreciated.
@StephenHendrysCueTips_ WATCH OUT THIS IS A SCAMMER
A significant department of the game whereby few online schools/tutors cover & nor teach.
We're treated to a 7 time World Champ here conveying his masterful, 'side spin' techniques into one's game, inspiring nothing but confidence for all ages.
Highest respects for doing this btw @Steven Hendry.. you Legend.
DONT REACH OUT, THIS IS A SCAM
Very informative and helpful.Thank you Stephen
How awesome is it that younger players have all of these awesome videos to comb through? So cool!
After watching Reyes & others pull off full table swerves I had to try it with only a slight raise of the butt I amazed myself with making the shot! Now I really look forward to getting blocked. I don't always make it but it's a blast attempting it.. kick shots are fun too but it's nice having another option! Great video!
I always wondered how to aim when you put side on, now I know! Thank you.
Always learning new stuff from most dominant player of the game. Can't wait to learn about low deflection cues....
@StephenHendrysCueTips.. THIS IS A SCAMMER, REPORTING DOES NOTHING, OF YOU SEE SCAM POSTS, CALL THEM OUT
Waiting for Ronnie to be in a video with you in this channel. The two GOATS!
Extreme running side on the “brown”? 😊Seriously though, all fantastic videos that have de-mystified snooker for me. Loving the cue cam, pure genius.
Steven really is a big inspiration and not only is he the best player to have lived he's also an excellent teacher
