Thanks for the message. I'm glad you like my stuff.
Good luck with your game,
Dr. Dave
The slo-mo clips you do are awesome, thanks alot for all your good videos.
Hello ,Dr Dave ! I'm 12 years old and I started playing pool this year ! I'm really thankfull to your videos because they have some really good stuff ! I see your videos everyday and I really like them .Now I bought a pool table at my home and i practice it every day watching you.I like your YT site and I hope you keep making videos !!!
I'm glad you found what you wanted.
LD shafts can offer benefits to some players, but playing well is more about the player and less about the cue.
Good observation. This is why there is less curve away from the tangent line with more cut angle.
you have the best pool videos on youtube by a long shot. great job man.
You are correct. Faster speed delays the curving, causing a shift down the tangent line. And with more cut angle, less curving occurs (i.e., the CB stays closer to the tangent line, and the curving takes longer since the CB loses less speed in the collision).
What a smooth way to advertise
Are you talking about UA-cam's ads or my links at the bottom of the video description?
The friction force requires time to accelerate the CB in the non-tangent-line direction. The force acts right away, and that creates acceleration right away, but it takes time for the speed/direction to change, and this occurs over a large distance with faster speed shots.
Best draw shot analyze video
Thanks. You might also enjoy my newer videos on this topic here:
billiards.colostate.edu/faq/draw/advice-and-drills/
The curve occurs over a larger distance (i.e., the CB stays closer to the tangent line longer) when it has more speed after impact.
Pool balls curve just like projectiles ... the curve starts immediately, but it takes time and distance for the curve to increase.
I found this video really helpful in the way it talked about cue elevation. Most of the videos i've seen say that its not a good idea to raise the butt of the cue when drawing, which i found ineffective. I liked that this video compared different elevations and there effect
Best video on the net explaining the mechanics of draw shot. Very helpful and educational. Helped me reduce my miscues and increase draw distance. Thanks
Like the slow motion camera.
You're welcome. I hope the resource page helps.
Me too. Thanks for the comment.
Yep. Good job.
You're welcome ... and thank you.
I hope the practice helps ... it usually does.
In all of those shots, the OB is rolling naturally when it hits the end-rail. The draw isn't really having any affect on the OB motion. However, you are right that the OB slows after rebounding off the cushion due to skidding, which occurs naturally with a rolling ball rebounding off a cushion.
Thanks DrDave your videos are very good and very helpfull.
I`m gonna practice your tips tomorow :)
Great video and recording, this is useful even for physics teaching. I'm surprised i never came across your channel, congratulations.
Thanks. Please help spread the word about my stuff.
Dr Dave Billards: Glad you agreed about hitting object ball in the center of pocket and not cheat the pocket by using the pocket. As every time I hit dead center towards the pocket. I seen not to have no problems sinking the ball in and playing the next shots.
OK I went there and seems it's pretty much what I figured, there are some advantages and disadvantages, and the advantages don't really sound like they'd fit how I play very well. Of course all these forums are full of people saying as soon as they got their new OB2 shaft, they suddenly started running out 5 racks in a row with ease and all this. Gear heads in every game. Hit a million balls, yep biggest 'secret tip' in pool. Good site BTW it's a pool encyclopedia!
Thanks for the vids, they are very informative.
Your channel and your video is so helpful......Great
Thank you ... I aim to swerve. :)

Knine Zuniga You’re welcome. I aim to swerve. :)
you're goooooood
@DrDaveBilliards I was practicing a bit today and looking at the errors that you've discovered I have been making has helped significantly, however not mastered yet obviously it takes time. I find that I feel 'scared' of hitting too low and that I might jump the ball. I am getting better though thanks for advice!
@pepamethodman
You're welcome ... and thanks!
Please help spread the word about my new vids,
Dr. Dave
Dr Dave, I got to say you're a Pool Scientist !
I aim to swerve. :)
The problem is that you're making your cue tip go under the ball which forces the ball to pop up and jump. what you dont see in this video is how they stroke the ball when the hit it in slow mo. The proper way is to hit the ball is to make the tip go from the lower middle to the bottom in a one smooth action very quickly.
take for example @0:16 the tip is just below middle. but when after he hits the ball @ 0:19 the tip is hitting felt.
Thank you! Please help spread the word about my vids, website, and instructional products.
@Stingray7667
The most likely cause is: you're probably dropping your elbow and not hitting the CB as low as you think.
For more info and advice, see the "draw shot" FAQ page on my website.
@pepamethodman
Bob uses a classic "pendulum stroke" which doesn't involve as much follow through as an elbow-dropping "piston" or "J" stroke. If you want more info on these topics (including advantages and disadvantages of each), see the "stroke" page in the FAQ section of my website (the link is in the video description).
@DrDaveBilliards thanks
Something I just discovered while watching this video. Notice at 2:25, that the edge of rail to the left of the side pocket is a little bit taller (1/16 to 1/8) of an inch, then the rail on the right-hand side. This could possibly cause some inconsistent banks - speed off the rebound - etc .
I think this is an optical illusion, but it is difficult to know for sure about stuff like this from just one camera angle. I don't have this table anymore, so we'll never know for sure.
@smugglinbooze
Thanks.
VORREI TANTO CAPIRTI
Huh this is amazing....
廖俊翔 Thanks!
See the "draw shot" FAQ page on my website (see the link above). I suspect it is your technique and not the cloth that is the problem.
@DrDaveBilliards so what you think may be happening is as I am aiming I think im hitting low but just as I go to shoot my elbow drops, causing the cue to actually tip higher than what I was aiming? I should check this out because it sounds like it could be a common flaw. Thank you for getting back so quickly I like your videos and I subscribed!
@StSOuLZz
See my video (NV B.96) dealing with grip and bridge. Also see the "bridge" page in the FAQ section of my website.
I think open and closed bridges can be equally good for draw. I personally prefer an open bridge.
Dr. Dave - I was watching a video of Bustamante vs. Reyes yesterday on UA-cam - and there was a point where Bustamante put lots of left inside draw on his shot, the CB hit the rail off the draw and flew right, why does that happen? and is that always the case with outside or inside draw?
Anytime the CB hits a cushion with sidespin, the CB rebounds at more of an angle in the spin direction. When the CB follows into a cushions with right (CCW) spin, it rebounds more to the right. When the CB draws into a cushion with right spin, everything is reversed, so it rebounds more to the left (still in the direction of the spin).
FYI, we have many examples of different types of shots using sidespin (including the one you mentioned) on Disc II of the Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots (VEPS). Example video clips can be found here:
dr-dave-billiards.com/veps/disc_II.html
Enjoy,
Dr. Dave
what does fast speed refer to:the speed of cue ball before impact or the speed of cue ball after impact with object ball.And secondly ,why does not the same happen in a projectile motion under gravitational force?: .the projectile curves right away.
LD shafts have advantages, but they also have disadvantages for some. For more info, go to my EDU website (the link is at the bottom of the video description above). Go to the FAQ section and click on "cue - low-squirt shafts."

@Stingray7667
You're welcome.
Pretty soon, you'll be drawing like as artist. :)
follow through please
What part of the video are you referring to?
@smugglinbooze that is about 500 frame per second
subscribed! you're an animal!
thanks for the videos
You're welcome ... and thank you. I aim to swerve. :)
My problem is making sure I pot I always get position I just help making sure the object ball goes in lll
Gavin Payne Yep ... if you don’t pocket the ball, position doesn’t help much.
You must have either elevated your cueing hand too high(try to cue your shot parallel to the table) or you did not chalk your tip.
@Stingray7667
That's it ... elbow down, tip up.
You're welcome.
Hi dr Dave, i have a question, if u intend to force the direction of the cue ball by english, i.e left, where do u hit the object ball, still in the middle or slighty left ??
DrDave what is your opinion on all the low deflection shafts out there? Are they worth the price in your opinion? I do have a G-core shaft I play with, but I switch to a McDermott maple shaft and while I play well with both of them I really dont see a lot of difference so wondering what your opinion is before I put out $200 for one of these shafts, do you really think they're worth it? To hear a lot of people talk they say you simply must have one, I don't know.
do u mean that since velocity is higher and frictional force constant, the radius will take a larger arc just like in circular motion.Is the curve less steep and longer resulting in the same angle finally with respect to aiming line as a slower shot results with steeper and shorter curve
could u tell why the cue ball goes tangentially first even after the frictional force starts acting right away ?
See the video: "NV B.96 - Grip and bridge technique and advice."
Whichever bridge you can use most effectively and comfortably is the one that is best for draw. Each bridge type can be equally effective. See the video for a summary of advantages and disadvantages of each.
does slow speed always ensure that cue ball will not shift along tangent line much?what about a slow shot but a thin cut where even a slow shot will be not as slow because angle is thin?in other words only hitting hard decides shift along tangent line or a thin cut angle also plays a role?
Navjot Singh g
which bridge is easier to draw ? close or open ?
I am a beginner in billiards.. i can only play shots when i hit in the middle of the cue ball.. if i hit it low for back spin the ball goes up in the air and sometimes of the pool table. can someone explain ?
sir,you have new videos coming up?should do videos of hitting the corners of pockets,i practice those shots.
+ericou812 I just posted a collection of videos from the "Video Encyclopedia of Eight Ball (VEEB)." Here's the playlist:
ua-cam.com/play/PLH9d4KFY28XuXvSmdBtVEvCXd7ZkN3oSW.html
Concerning pocket point shots, a couple of videos can be found here:
billiards.colostate.edu/threads/pocket.html#point
Enjoy!
+ericou812 It is not good to use the pockets to make your balls in your pocket. As the pocket can cheat you in making the object ball in. From what i learned when I was young and playing pool. I was taught to hit the ball in dead center. As then the ball drops down automatically in the pocket. If you use the pocket. It has a tenancy of popping out of the pocket. Or the pocket will bump the ball to not hit right to go in the pocket.
+MrRex1949 Obviously, it is usually best to hit the ball center pocket (when pocket cheating isn't required to clear a ball or create position), but like many things that require skill ... it is easier said than done.
Dr David Billards: I was talking about making a ball in the pocket using center. As someone else was trying to use the pocket to make the balls in the pocket. And from the other tips and tricks I saw on the video. A lot of people have said to use center of pocket to make your ball in. I will say I have learned a lot of tips from your tips and tricks as well. and i will be using those tips when I play pool. I do play in tournaments. And i am always viewing tips and tricks to learn how to play better pool. And not be stuck in a rut and not move to improve my pool playing. I appreciate all you do for us here. It really helps me. I can say that. My pool has improved watching people like you teach us how to play the proper pool methods. Thanks for doing that.
+MrRex1949 I'm glad to hear you like and benefit from my stuff. Please help spread the word.
I am having troubles doing the draw technique. People say to keep the cue 'level/parallel' with the table as possible and about a cuetip or 1 1/2 lower than centre etc and to 'follow through' when I hit the ball it seems to 80% of the time produce top spin no matter how hard I hit it or how low combined what am I doing wrong? I would much like to master the draw technique and I've been practising forever but as my shop teacher used to tell me, only perfect practice makes perfect.
@DrDaveBilliards PS: love your vids
How to I prevent it from doing a Jumpshot
Don't tighten your grip during the stroke. Stay relaxed and accelerate the cue smoothly. For more advice, see:
billiards.colostate.edu/threads/draw.html#advice
Is that a Jim Rempe cue stick?
No. It is a Balabushka.
I tried it but from backspin it turned into a jump shot
I am Rain it's called misscue
Click on the link in the video description above and go into the FAQ section. Then click on "aiming" and "aim compensation for squirt, swerve, and throw." There you can find instructional articles and videos on this topic. The answer to your question is not very simple.
so what tip do you prefer to use i'm considering buying some kamui super soft {ss}
I am currently using a hard Triangle; but honestly, I don't really care too much which tip I use. Different tips have a different feel, but good players can play equally well with any tip (as long as the tip holds chalk). For more info, see:
billiards.colostate.edu/threads/cue_tip.html#hardness
billiards.colostate.edu/threads/cue.html#feel
Also, the chalk brand choice is not so important. For more info, see:
billiards.colostate.edu/threads/chalk.html
thank you very much for your help it has defenitly helped me make a more educated line of thinking that will benefit my decision

Pool
... is cool.
Hi Dr. Dave,
Here's an billiards physics question for you.
At the 2014 CSI Invitational Efren Reyes had a difficult shot in his match against Jung-Lin Chang. Efren elected to play it leaving the magic rack in place despite it being in his line. He made the shot splitting the pocket, but he missed position by a wide margin. He proceeded to lose the rack and the match by a narrow margin. ua-cam.com/video/Whq89Kgp_zk/v-deo.html
Does the magic rack affect draw stun or follow? How does the answer change if the rack moves under the cue ball? Did this affect the shot?
My thinking is that the rack creates less rolling friction on its surface, sliding friction is probably lower too, and its edges could cause a slight change in direction. When I first saw the shot, based on the direction of the miss I thought maybe the sliding rack caused the cue ball to come off the object ball with more draw. Upon slowing it down the video it looks like he shot it with stun, and maybe the rack caused less follow to develop. I don't know if he was intending to go between 8 and 11, or at a steeper or shallower angle toward the long rail.
Alternatively the rack had no effect. Reyes has probably played more high level pool than most anyone, and he apparently didn't think going over the magic rack would matter. But it's rare for him to miss position by that much. When Chung got to the table the first thing he did was remove the rack even though it wasn't in the way. Efren did the same on the next game, but went back to leaving it on in subsequent games. Would be happy to hear your thoughts on this.
The Magic Rack can affect the CB in the ways you described, but I don't think the effects are very significant since it is so light and since the CB doesn't "ride" it for very long. Regardless, I would always remove it from the table.
