Eh it's not too bad. It might mean a more rudimentary mic setup because many places only have so much gear or so many channels to work with, but in terms of mixing a band it wouldn't be too hard. I run sound for all kinds of shows, and being a Deadhead, I could only seldom fault a band for showing up with two drummers.
"As long as there's more people 8n the audience than on stage"... the more important thing is, as long as there's more chords than people in the audience, it's still jazz
Adam, in the future you should announce these kinds of tours on your channel. I had no idea there was anything happening as I don't have other kinds of social media, so if this had come to my area, I would have probably missed out on it and been really sad. It doesn't have to be anything major, but I think just a small announcement video on this channel would go a long way towards raising awareness about these kinds of things with your UA-cam audience.
@@DiePixelkrieger I understand that to a certain extent, and if there was a separate Sungazer channel on UA-cam where he announced these things, I probably wouldn't ask him to do it here, but as it is, this is the main place on UA-cam for Sungazer fans to congregate (aside from Shawn's channel, which also didn't have an explicit announcement). A lot of people at UNC, Duke, and NC State would show up but hour and a half to nowhere is a bit of a haul.
I've been a musician/bass player for over a decade and went on my first tour over the summer as a tech for 3 bands. We went through Texas and made $0. It was basically 15 people on vacation that happened to play a show every night for 11 days. Played for a total of probably less than 100 people but, met a lot of cool musicians along the way.
Look at Adam, living his best life playing music for his band and accomplishing dreams. I honestly feel so happy for him, wish you can keep this up mate!
So weird seeing a much much more accomplished and skillful group of musicians play the same stage (Smith's olde bar) and occupy the same green room as i did for my first show a few months ago lol
Watching Adam’s videos makes me appreciative being a part of the music scene in my local area. I haven’t went out on bus tours yet but I play a couple gigs to several a month and love the community aspect. At this point having adopted a couple of kids, I don’t think I could commit to it. But I know I have the chops for it if I had to. I’m not bragging I’m just gracious and thankful to have achieved this level of success and to have the amount of talent I do have. So as someone who tours for a living, I totally feel your pain with the first show having so many issues. Things go wrong, stuff doesn't work, I've been there before. At the same time, it kinda of highlights the importance of pre-production. I don't intend any disrespect, you guys are much more competent musicians than myself. Any tour that I've been a part of, we would always take a couple days before, work out any issues with the rig, with parts, tracks, arrangement, choreography, etc. Even if it was stuff that we had played for months, we would hash it out fix issues, tweak the setlist, try to improve the overall presentation. Sometimes issues come up and you can't predict/avoid them. We once had our interface keep disconnecting mid song. I tore our tracks rig apart, tested every cable, swapped interfaces, only to find out we had a slightly loose USB port on our Macbook. A little gaffe tape every set and it fixed the issue. Also, I know this is your band's first tour, but the type of shows and setup/teardown needs to be taken into consideration. If you know you are going to have a short change-over, you need to design your rig around it. If you do a bunch of festival style shows, maybe running your own board/monitors would help. It helps with quick set-changes since you know that there will be consistency in your ears from night to night and you can focus all of your time on line-check. On a side note, the people you tour with really do become like family, for better or worse. 😂 On good tours, it's hard saying goodbye to all the friends you just made, it you really bond over shared experiences. Anyway, congrats on the first tour. Hopefully you guys get to tour some more! Maybe I'll have to catch a show if you're back in Nash. 😏
I am a blues guy. I play in 4/4 and live in the blues scale. I play in either A or E (because I know where the four boxes are on the fretboard) and when you hit a dissident note, me and everyone around cringes. With this, you can play any note you want. There are no dissident notes or "wrong" notes. That's the part that I can't seem to get my mind around and accept Jazz for what it is. Because if I tried that playing blues, the band would fire me. I watched Justin and Lee on the Rut Buster videos about jamming on the sixth. Even that concept is putting me out of my comfort zone because you still have to know when to land on the sixth note in the scale and not the fifth or seventh like is what I normally do. So watching these jazz videos are helping me to see that if it's in the right context, it can sound nice and musical.

Adam- I've been watching your videos since I saw "How to Walk Jazz Bass in Under 60 Seconds" posted on r/bass, and I just want to thank you and tell you how much your work has meant to me. I started watching your stuff right as I started to take jazz bass seriously, and unfortunately soon after my school lost some incredible faculty that ran our jazz band. Playing jazz just stopped making me happy and I chose to dedicate my time to other things. Your videos have made it so that I can keep learning about and feeling connected to jazz, as well as the general goal of studying music. Even though I didn't go to college to study jazz like I wanted to, I owe a lot to you for helping me find ways to keep music in my life. Hell you even recommended me my now-favorite jazz album (You Must Believe in Spring). It's been amazing watching your style grow and your video production skills flourish, and this video felt like a well deserved celebration of your work. Thank you so much Adam, and here's to more e x t r e m e j a z z c o n t e n t in the future.

I love your version of Ascent at 27:56 with the super groovy bass line and dragging drums. You should totally record a version of it, would love to be able to listen to it on Spotify!
This is 100% how tours go. Be ready to overcome adversity, and be positive regardless of how you really feel. It SO IMPORTANT. Also, the best memories of your life, even the bad gigs are your best days.
Having being used to this life of 150 plus shows a year for the best part of 30 years , 2020 has been painful beyond belief to say the least But watching this just now put me right back in the bus and warmed my heart . Funny how I’m missing those last minute technical difficulties which obviously worked perfect the previous night , I’d strongly give anything to have fix our keyboard players rig while still playing bass mid song or find that nightmare power cable that just decided to my pedal board howl like a banshee ... DAMN I MISS THIS SHIT
great show in fayetteville, y'all, i hope y'all come back to NC again and come to Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill. I guarantee you'll get a better turn-out.
I live in Fayetteville and i agree. I couldn't believe they were coming to play here and i knew hardly anyone would come. They could have played just about any other town in NC and got a better turn out. First time i got to see anyone interesting in town tho
I was there at the Atlanta show. I still think about Adam and Shubh playing, as well as all of the Aberdeen guys, it was a very memorable night and I hope that I'll be able to see them live again in the future. Sadly I didn't make the cut on the footage reel, but I'll always have my memories :)
Your band is the Ringo Starr of jazz: There's lots of clever stuff going on, but you play for the music and not to show off your skill... which ultimately leads to music that is easy to listen to despite being complex. That takes a true passion for, and understanding of, music and a well-tamed ego.
That was great brought back lots of memories of being young and playing and doing roadie work touring around. All aspect of music on the road is frustrating and cool at the same time.
For the next Q+A: How do i teach a person how to swing and shuffle? We recently discovered in my band that our bassist didn't really know that these two things existed..
@@cadeallen7210 Misha Mansoor of Periphery talks about the tour, and specifically the technical issues they experienced in a interview style video with Music Is Win. He recalls John Petrucci being disappointed in them a bit, and it really made them step up their game to work out the issues.
I respect you so much for showing footage of the technical difficulties. I'm only a short bit into the video. The show must go on indeed. Much respect!
You have also inspired me to come back to music. Other than some theory classes in high school and college (definitely not a music major), I was self taught for 15 years. I learned a lot over that time and with each step hated the industry more. Your videos (and your band[s]) show another side to music that I thought was dead. Thank you and God bless!
Sell outs. I knew it I'm editing this comment because I wanted to clarify that I was making a joke. Trying to be clever about the sold out shows.
I’m kinda sad I missed the Boston show!
same here!!
Yeah I had no idea they were touring ☹️
same i didnt even know they were tourin
Same. The show was like a ten minute walk from my place. Tracking them on band's in town and SongKick now!
Sameeeeeeee
Thanks for the vicarious re-living touring with ya'll!! Great camera work and editing. You guise rock- headaches and aallll. !!
So are we just gonna ignore the straight drip Adam has in all the early shots? The fit is too cold
Yeah that coat tho
@@itoastpotatoes399 right? Wearing that shit like the preview for those fake ass coats on Wish
I was in the Nashville show. Shook your hand between the 7pm set and the 9pm set.
You owe us Nashvillians another visit, only this time with the full set! Good show regardless
When someone says bass is easy cause u only play the root of the chord 4:43
That was kind of a fun watch. Congrats on the tour and keep rockin and jazzin!
Wow. Never heard this type of music. Has to be soo difficult to play. Appreciating it.
I really wish I lived in the US (or, at least, not across the Atlantic Ocean) to go and catch you guys live. I had a smile on my face just from seeing you all having a great time. I pray for Shubhgazer2020 to be a thing!
Thanks a lot for your content and opening a new world of music to a whole lot of people like me!
Come back to Cambridge! When I saw the announcement I was so pumped but but then so bummed as I had a conflict and could not make it.
I love your version of Ascent at 27:56 with the super groovy bass line and dragging drums. You should totally record a version of it, would love to be able to listen to it on Spotify!
ShubhGazer2020 U.K and Ireland?
at least youd have shorter drives and id get to see you
Ha! Shorter drives so long as they avoid the M25, M42, M5... 🙄😁😁
This is 100% how tours go. Be ready to overcome adversity, and be positive regardless of how you really feel. It SO IMPORTANT. Also, the best memories of your life, even the bad gigs are your best days.
yeah, we need you guys to tour Europe asap
Having being used to this life of 150 plus shows a year for the best part of 30 years , 2020 has been painful beyond belief to say the least
But watching this just now put me right back in the bus and warmed my heart .
Peef Rimgar agreed. I’d have gone to Fayetteville if I’d have known!!
@@vivlund i was there and it was great but like.... there's just more people in the triangle area.
3:53 Cameo
Double cameo ^__^
play prs for ultimate toan ok?
@@BubbleManxx butterscotch tele best toans ok
Contratz Adam. You deserve every bit of success you're achieving. One of the best musicians on youtube, amazing work.
I live near to Smithes Old Bar and I am upset I didn't get to see you live :( All the concert schedules I check and I miss this one.
7:54 So _that's_ how Rick's studio is arranged!
I really hope someday you guys tour by somewhere in portland OR I would love to see this live
24:32 Wait.... was that.... emotion? From Adam??
Quick, cut away!
Congratulations Adams, so happy for you, you deserve all this love. Thank you for what you do
Your technical difficulties reminded me of Periphery’s tour with Dream Theater.
Ah yes, back when p1 was new
Kind friend, may I introduce you to Thank You Scientist?
Is there any more information about this online? I'm interested in what happened, but I've only found one article
@@cadeallen7210 Misha Mansoor of Periphery talks about the tour, and specifically the technical issues they experienced in a interview style video with Music Is Win.
He recalls John Petrucci being disappointed in them a bit, and it really made them step up their game to work out the issues.
@@ddawsT Thank you! I think it's really cool that they were able to learn and grow from the experience.
Very excited for this - you all killed it in Richmond! Thanks so much for coming!
I need that “ドラマー ” shirt Shawn was wearing at the NYC show.
What do it say?
@@hmmm8735 it says 'drummer'
I respect you so much for showing footage of the technical difficulties. I'm only a short bit into the video. The show must go on indeed. Much respect!
Saxophonist doing high fives with the crowd was the best thing I've seen xD
Life before COVID
You have also inspired me to come back to music. Other than some theory classes in high school and college (definitely not a music major), I was self taught for 15 years. I learned a lot over that time and with each step hated the industry more.
Your videos (and your band[s]) show another side to music that I thought was dead. Thank you and God bless!
Sell outs. I knew it
I'm editing this comment because I wanted to clarify that I was making a joke. Trying to be clever about the sold out shows. But then I realized just calling you all (amazing, accomplished, inspiring musicians) sellouts doesn't sound like a joke. I'm not good at jokes. If you cant tell. I love what you guys do
positivitytour
Hey don't apology for making a joke.
Also, I was about to make this one ahah
@@esmajin8185 unless it's a bad joke like this. Then you're allowed to apologize for it.
An emoji wink ;) would have been sufficient sign posting in case the PC police were out on youtube patrol. However, having said that, I think, in the current climate, your self awareness and sense of fair-play is appreciated too.
🏆
Spicy jazz chords and sax appeal are guaranteed to draw a crowd!
(But most of them probably just came for The Licc...)
22:00 that ewee (evee? Eoui?) solo and subsequent drum break thing absolutely broke me in half!! Bloody great job! You should be incredibly proud of what you've achieved!
It's an EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument).
@@BramSenders that makes sense. I'm really glad those are making a comeback. It gives an esthetic you can't really achieve with other instruments.
@@PeterCleff The first time I heard this instrument was in Adam's work Exigence, which also has a sick EWI solo by the same Zac Zinger. And is also still one of my favorite modern pieces of music to this day. Check it out, if you like!

Does being a performer helps you as a composer, if yes, how?
Its crazy seeing my city in the background of one of your vids, love from Norfolk, VA!
